Archive instead of delete gmail messages in Mail

Does anyone know of a way to force Apple Mail to archive messages rather than move them to the trash. I'd like to be able to keep my Inbox clear but keep a copy of all my messages. At the moment the only solution I've found is to drag the message to the "all mail" folder but this is rather laborious.
Ideally when I'd like an archive button or keyboard shortcut so that when I've finished with an email I can quickly archive and move onto the next message.
I understand it is possible to do this with Thunderbird but I like the mobileme syncing of notes from my iPhone with Mail.
Thanks

I have a similar question regarding how to save deleted messages from a .me mail account (IMAP). I like to keep my inbox limited to one page of e-mails. Rather than drag the e-mails that I have read to some on my Mac folder, I prefer just to delete them. It is much faster. However, now mobile me is permanently erasing the trash after 30 days. This has resulted in several months of lost e-mail which is now unobtainable. I have a cloned backup, Time Machine, and Mozy–none of which seem able to restore the old e-mail. There is a preference in mail which has an option to never permanently erase deleted messages. Apparently this does not apply to mobile me.
Is there any way to delete messages from the inbox and not have them go to the trash but rather preserve them forever on my Mac or on mobile me? Or, do I have to individually drag each one over to a folder to preserve them?
Thanks

  • How to delete gmail messages in Mail for Mac

I am using Mail 7.3 on my Macbook Pro with Mavericks 10.9.5.
I use Gmail for my email.
When I DELETE a message in Gmail it goes into the Gmail Archive (and stays in the All Mail folder)- it does NOT get Deleted.
Gmail help says I need to drag each message to the Trash when using Mail as Delete will not work.
    Really?
This is a drag to do, besides there is no Trash folder.
I have a 'Bin' folder and a 'Deleted Messages' folder so I'm trying to use them.
Still for Mail and Gmail not to be compatible for Delete seems crazy.
I have tried changing the Mailbox Behaviours in Preferences but it seems to make no difference.

I Wonder if your sitting there laughing at us as if there is some big conspiracy about selecti all and deleting all from our iPhones and iPads.
    The conspiracy.
Why can we not just not select all in the mail inbox and then delete all, if we do not want to delete every single one of them then deselect the few that we do not want to delete instead of having to select the thousands we do want delete individually.
And if you do make a mistake and delete the wrong emails by selecting all, then go to your trash and reinstate the ones you did not want to delete
I think 99% of us know how to DELETE emails individually, as you put it.
That's just sarcasm and if not then then your not fully understanding the question asked.
I would also say that probably 99% of us want to be able to select all and delete all if that's what we desire.
I would just like a honest answer of why we cannot select all delete all rather than giving me a load of rubbish about encase we delete something we didn't want to delete.

  • How do I delete Gmail messages in iOS5

I have my Gmail account set up to push (as an Exchange account) to my iPhone 4S.  Unfortunatley no matter how I try to delete email messages they are always placed in the All Mail folder, and I never see them in the trash.  Has anyone had any luck deleteing Gmail messages from iOS5?

I just figured this one out.  Go into settings/mail, contacts, calendars.  Under the Accounts section choose Gmail.  Then there should be an "Archived Messages" slide switch...it's on by default, slide it to off and you should be able to delete either by swiping to the left when you are in the "Inbox" view.  If you are actually reading the message at the bottom there will now be a "trash can" icon to delete the mail. You should be good to go now.

  • When deleting a message in mail, how do you get it to advance to the next message? whenever i delete a message it goes back to the previous message.

when trying to delete a message in mail, i would prefer to advance to the next message. i delete a message and the curser goes back to an earlier message. i usually delete the most recent messages first.

First of all, you've posted in the Snow Leopard forum, but your profile says you're running Leopard, not Snow Leopard. What version of Mac OS X are you really running? You should always be sure that your profile matches the forum you're posting in, otherwise the "solution" to your problem may be totally ineffective.
Part of your problem is that deleting Mail messages depends on how you have them ordered. If they are listed in Descending Date order (most recent at the top), and you want to delete a series of consecutive emails from an earlier time, you should select the last one in that group and press the Delete key; with each one that's deleted, the selection will move to the next one up the list. You could also select the first one in the group, then Shift-click on the last one in the group and press Delete to get rid of them in one step.
If you have them listed in Date Ascending order (most recent at the bottom), you would have to select the oldest message(s) you want to delete and select it (or them) and press the Delete key, and the selection would move down the list to the next most recent message in the window.

  • Delete [Gmail] folder in mail?

I just set up a Gmail account on my iPhone 4 and I have a folder listed [Gmail] that I do not want.  Is there a way to get rid of it?  I figured out how to get rid of all the other folders that appeared such as "Spam" and "Important" but I can not get rid of the [Gmail] folder.  Any tips?
    Thanks.
    Thom

You are seeing an intentional but strange feature of GMail...  nothing is ever deleted, and instead remains forever in All Mail.  You probably want to just hide All Mail from Mail, so that you don't have to see it and don't have all those messages syncing back to your Mac.  See Hiding GMail’s “All Mail” from Apple Mail.  There has been one change on GMail since I wrote that, though...  you no longer have to go to Labs and turn on Advanced IMAP.
(Note that my pages contain links to other pages that promote my services, and this should not be taken as an endorsement of my services by Apple.)

  • How to retrieve deleted gmail in apple mail.

During the process of deleting thousands of emails in apple mail, I accidentally deleted all the email.  Can this be undone or can I retrieve those deleted emails?   The trash has been emptied.

In the mailbox list, below the word "MAILBOXES" and the standard mailboxes (Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash, & Junk), you should have some lines like "SMART MAILBOXES", "REMINDERS", "RSS", "ON MY MAC", and a line with the name of each of your mail accounts. Each of those lines may have subordinate lines indented below it, or they may be hidden. Before Lion, the top-level lines would have standard disclosure triangles to their left like folders, but Lion Mail removed that visual clue in favor of a word "Show" or "Hide" to the right that appears only when you mouse over it.
The Gmail Spam folder you seek is two folders deep inside your Gmail account.
    Here's my Gmail account listing:
It has 41 unread messages. If I hover my cursor over the oval with "41" in it, the oval shifts left and "Show" appears. If I click on "Show", I get this:
If I click on the disclosure triangle left of the "[Gmail]" folder, voila!
By the way, this intermediate "[Gmail]" folder is specific to Gmail, Google Apps mail sites, and other mail sites using Google's Gmail code, as is the All Mail folder. Other servers will have their own folder structure.

  • Phantom GMail messages in mail.app

    Here's my situation:
At one time I decided it would be lovely to point mail.app at my GMail account. I changed my mind about this pretty quickly (once I figured out that it was going to take approximately 11 years to download all of my gmail messages, since I rarely delete anything from gmail).
The "phantom messages" I reference in the subject line are these: references to gmail messages that do not exist on my machine. During the normal course of using mail, I don't ever see them, but they turn up by the thousands when I search for messages or when I create a Smart Mailbox. I'm starting to suspect that they may be implicated in some of the mail slowness that I have been experiencing, in particular slowness of Smart Mailboxes (which, ideally, I would like to use to organize my RSS feeds).
    Here's what it looks like:
The little "Show in mailbox" text that looks like it ought to be a link is nothing - can't click it, can't highlight it, nada.
I have recently rebuilt ALL of my .plist files in an attempt to address the "mail won't quit" problem (the one that's NOT related to notes or mobile me - seems to have worked, by the way), so I know that's not going to solve the problem. When I look at /Library/Mail, there is no evidence of a GMail mailbox anywhere.
So. Does anybody know how I can get rid of these? There are literally tens of thousands of them - one search turns up over 16000 phantom messages. I can delete them, which makes them not show up in searches anymore. Interestingly, when I delete them they do NOT show up in my Trash... they simply vanish. So I could manually delete them all, but that would take a really long time.

Bump... anybody have any ideas on this one?

You should watch the tutorial videos if you have not.
In answer to your question, slide your finger over the email header and to the right. A red Delete button will appear. Tap Delete. Check out this clip on how to delete email.
You will find it as #2 on Finger Tips and at the time this was posted, the clip was also displayed to #2 Delete a Message.

  • TS3899 How do I select and delete multiple messages from mail?

How can I select mutiple messages in my inbox and send them all to the trash without selecting each message and trashing it? Using the "Mark All" command does not give me that option--only the "Flag" and "Mark as Read" options.

I know there is no delete all option within Mail app but this workaround does the trick
    1. Go to your inbox
    2. Press Edit
    3. Tap any message once to select it
    4. Press AND HOLD the Move button
    5. While still holding the Move button, tap the message you selected
    6. Release the Move button
    7. This will bring up a dialog box asking you which folder you’d like to move all your messages to – just select the Trash folder and you’re all done

  • Deleted a message from Mail does not move it to the trash folder

I am a brand new mac user, so it's possible I just don't know what I am doing yet.
I have added my IMAP email account to Mail with the following mailbox behavior:
When I delete a message from my Inbox, in Mail it appears to move to the Trash folder.  However, if I log into the webmail interface I can see it actually still exists in the Inbox, but has been marked as deleted (there is a line through it).  It is not actually moving the message on the server into a trash folder, like iPad does.  If I pull up the Trash folder on my iPad, it does automagically reflect the item I deleted.  However, on my phone (not an iPhone), the messages are missing from the Trash folder.
How do I configure Mail on my Mac to behave like Mail on the iPad?  When I delete a message, I want it to move the message into the Trash folder on the server.
    Thank you very much,
    Jesse

I figured it out.  Mail created a new folder called, "Deleted Messages."  I was looking in "Deleted Items," which was an old folder.

  • Deleted Inbox messages on Mail

    hello everybody,
All of my personal e mails on Inbox, Sent items have been deleted because i erased my e mail accounts
Could you give me any option on how can i bring them back on Mail "Inbox"
    Thanks Moumou

Before deleting an account in Mail, a warning message is provided indicating all mailboxes for the account will also be deleted but this does not affect any messages that remain on the server.
When creating an account in Mail, an account named folder is created at the first level within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail named by the user name and incoming mail server the account. For POP type accounts, the following mailboxes in mbox format are created when the function is used by the account; INBOX.mbox, Drafts.mbox, Sent Messages.mbox, Deleted Messages.mbox and Junk.mbox (when Junk Mail is set to automatic).
The mbox files within each account named folder represent the account named mailboxes under In, Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk in the mailboxes drawer.
When deleting an account in Mail and as the warning message indicates, the account named folder along with the associated account mailboxes within are also deleted at that time.
If you don't have and maintain a backup, I'm afraid your options for recovering the deleted mailboxes are not very promising.

  • Does "delete sent messages" in Mail refer to deleting on the server only?

I want to delete my sent messages from the server but not from the "sent" mailbox in Mail on my HD.  I am afraid to check the "delete sent messages" box in the mailbox behavior preferences because it does not specify whether they would be deleted just on the server, just on my HD, or on both.  Can somebody please clarify this for me?
    Thank you.

i don't know why you would want to do that, but people have their reasons. I do not believe you can delete an Email on one device and not let it syncronize. You know there are ways to hide an Email on your device, or just mark it as read, but it's not like Emails take up your hard storage or anything.

  • I cannot delete gmail messages using Maverick

Using Maverick OSX I delete messages from Mail 7.3 only to have them reappear in my Inbox after a short time. They do not go into the trash folder. Must I open an email in order to delete it?

If you are using the native Apple email app you should be able to swipe to the left and delete. If you can't then remove and reinstall the email account. If that does work
    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.
