Archive or upgrade on installation?

Sorry if this is an age old question but I have some doubts as to what is best...
I'm going from 10.4.11 to 10.5 on a G5. I use the machine for Logic Pro and have various audio apps and 3rd party stuff installed (audio files are on 2nd drive)
Obviously I want to preserve all these folders/apps exactly where they are when I open Leopard so everything will work as normal.
So which option should I be using... Archive & Install or Upgrade? And why?
For Archive & Install, the Apple support page says "Select this option if you want to install a "fresh" system on your computer. This type of installation moves existing System files to a folder named Previous System, then installs a new copy of Mac OS X."
So does this not carry over all my apps etc. to the new system? Or does it just copy them? Sorry for the confusion.
Any help appreciated! Cheers, Sidx

Hello s:
Either will work and I have used both (until OS X 10.6 which does not have an archive and install option!).
It is gratuitous advice, but be sure you have a good backup before you change your software. I use Time Machine (I cannot remember if that was available in OS X 10.4). I have (and still use) a little program called SuperDuper! ($28 US at www.shirt-pocket.com). That program makes bootable clones that make a restore/retreat very easy.
So does this not carry over all my apps etc. to the new system? Or does it just copy them? Sorry for the confusion.
Allo fo your programs, files, and settings are preserved. The +"previous system"+ folder is quite large and may be deleted if things are OK after the A&I (two to three weeks or so). It is sort of a safety net. The file is not bootable, but contains all of your "stuff" before the A&I.

Your does not appear to me the option of Upgrade existing installation to a clustered installation
I am installing sap 4,7 ext: 110 in cluster formed with Windows 2003 enterprise and SQL enterprise 2000, the manual of sap says to me that it installs SQL of local way in the node a of cluster, later mind to install service pack 3 in the node a, later mind to install sap in the node a, after that requests to me that realise upgrade of SQL with the Upgrade option existing installation to a clustered installation but that option does not appear to me qualified

Here is a short (not necessarily complete) list of Cluster Option Requirements
    - The SQL Server binaries are installed on a local non-
      shared drive (Only Node A).
    - The disc for the database files and the log file are
belongs to the SQL Server Cluster Group (MSSQL).
    - On node B is no SQL Server with the same name (named
instance name or default instance name ) installed.
Check the registry on node B for the branches
      HLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
       and
      HLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
Deinstall the SQL Server on node B, if it exists and
delete the registry branches on node B, if they still
      exists.
    - The executing user for the setup has appropriate
      rights on both nodes
      (domain administrator).
    - The SQL Server database files (master, msdb, etc.) are
      on a shared disc.
    - Node B is available via private and/or public net.
    - The Cluster service is running on node A and on node B.
    - You are using the right CD (not mat.number 51011908)
or have set the version by means of the .reg file
      sqlverfix.reg (see node 377430).
    - All needed discs (SQL DB, SQL Log, Quorum) are on
      node A.
Please check all the requirements and run the cluster upgrade of SQL Server again.

    Hello there, G-Oker.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great recommendations for the very error message you are receiving:
Resolve specific iTunes update and restore errors
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Particularly:
    Check USB connections
    Related errors: 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643-1650, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response,” and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
    Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you checked your connections and are still seeing the error message, check for hardware issues.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • After installation of cs4 extended upgrade update installations get "adobe setup has stopped working

I've used CS3 and CS4 expanded (upgrade) on my older computer with Windows XP and though slow, mainly after cs4 was installed, they worked well. I've recieved a new computer for christmas and am moving my CS3 and CS4 expanded (upgrad) to the new computer and am having some problems.
My new computer setup is this.....
Windows Vista , Premium Home edition (65bit) with SP1
Intel Core i7-920 Quad Core Processor
    RAM -3GB DDR3
Amount of free disk space. 653 GB
Make/Model of Video Card. - ATI Radeon HD 4850
CS3 installs fine though on execution photoshop says that it prefers a dua core processor I click the continue button and it seems to run fine.
After installing CS3 I restart and upload CS4, which takes a long time!, then run bridge to install updates and thats where my first problem occurs.
When the updates are installing I get this message...."Adobe setup has stopped working" and windows looks for a solution which of course isn't there, ha!
So I've tried to use CS4 without the updates, run bridge, select a photo to open in photoshop and after photo opens in photoshop an error message comes up saying this "the specified modul could not be found C:\programfiles\commonfiles\adobe\Adobe Version Cue C44\client\4.0.1\Version Cue.DLL" and when I x out the error box photoshop closes, unable to use it any further (not bridge though)
I suspect this error message comes up because I can't do the updates? Either way I sure could use some help here!
Oh, and I've deactivated and reinstalled and the same happended after reinstallation.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

People like me, who distrust Adobe's updater, get the updates from the Adobe download site. That way you have control and you only get what you need. For example, if you are not working with colleagues on a network you don't need Version Cue.
Don't worry about the message regarding the processor. Adobe's installers are just as bad as their automatic updates and your processor is simply too new and they are not up-to-date. You may get similar false alarms with Bridge.

  • OBIEE 11g upgrade wizard & installation on linux 64bit

    Hi,
Is it that on Linux 64 bit machine, i should install OBIEE 11g in "Software Only" mode, only then upgrade wizard works correctly, if i need to do "Software Only" should i be installing weblogic server independently? or at high level what are steps to be followed.
    Thanks,
    Sree

    Hi Sree,
What you are mentioning here is relevant for Windows 64 bits environment where you have to install the software only after installing web logic standalone.
The installer for Linux 64bit will install all the components for you except of course the RCU that you need to downlaod and install first.
Please refer to this link for more details about the installation
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/bi.1111/e10539/c4_installing.htm#CIHDJGIH
NB: Devlopement tools (Admin tool or catalog manager..) don't exisit for Linux, so you have to use windows for development

  • Content Server Upgrade Error & Installer Error

I'm upgrading Content Server to version 6.0 from version 5.0.3, but during the process the Workflow service was removed and not restored. I tried to run the installation program again to install the workflow server, but it keeps giving me this error message:
"Fatal Application ErrorThis application has unexpectedly quitInovaction of this Java application has caused an InvocationTargetException. This application will now exit (LAX)."
In the details of the error, it says it's a java.lang.StackOverflowError with the installer. So I uninstalled Content Sever to start all over, but I keep getting the same error message when the installer launches. I thought the installer may have become corrupt so I downloaded a new one and I get the same message.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.Thanks.

vfwrite cannot write : No space left on device
This suggest that you runned out of space... but if its not the case then it might be a bug.
No an expert in the subject... but you can try to patch the 7.6 to see if it fix the problem before you consider upgrading to 7.7
    That's my 2 cents
    Regards

  • MacbookPro 15" Mid 09 don't read/recognize Windows 7 upgrade DVD installer

I'm using Parallels Desktop 4 for using Vista Home Premium (always worked fine) on my Macbook Pro 15" 2.8Ghz (Mid 2009).
I wanted to upgrade to Windows 7. I bought the Windows 7 Home Premium Family pack (3 licences). I recived the package/software with 2 DVD installers: 32Bit and 64bit versions.
I insert the 32bit DVD installer on my MBPro (using Parallels Desktop 4) (i have the 32bit Windows Vista version), but my MBPro tried to read the DVD installer, but after a few seconds the DVD was ejected. The MBPro didn't recognized the DVD at all! I tried several times and the same happened. The MBPro do not show me any kind of message, just can read the DVD and ejects.
After that, i took the 64bit DVD installer Version. The MBPro recognizes the DVD inmediatly but Parallels Desktop 4 didn't let me to install it due was a "not supported version" (64bit) (my WVista is 32bit).
Why is that? Why my MBPro recognizes the 64Bit DVD Installer and the 32Bit do not?
I did the same precedure with my iMac and works perfect (i already upgraded form Windows Vista to Windows 7) without any single problem! (iMac 3.06Ghz 21.5", 250Gb, Late 2009) (running Paralles Desktop 4, using Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit version).
My MBPro have a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868 optical drive.
My iMac have a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N optical drive.
Is that an issue with the optical drive? or firmware? or Parallels Desktop? or the DVD installer?
Is anybody having trouble with this kind of issue? How did you resolved?
P.D: Sorry for my poor English (i speak spanish)

SP1 has been trouble for some Macs. Don't know so don't ask why. Pre-SP1 then worked fine.
    Try Windows 8 Preview.
Some people use VirtualBox, install there, and use VB and windows native tools to burn the DVD.
Once you’ve downloaded the ISO for your Windows edition and bit-ness, you can either burn it to a DVD using Windows 7's built-in DVD burning tool or copy it to a USB drive using Microsoft’s Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool—our guide will help you through it step-by-step.
Because it sounds like even though you used 2x that it is not a good DVD. Or DVD media/brand. Or the Superdrive - which has to be internal on your model unless you're hacking the USB-DVD driver plist.

  • Upgrading USB installer and MBPro

    Hello,
I _finally_ upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.7 and am experiencing some confusion that I hope can be eliminated here.
I downloaded Lion install app from store and made a Bootable USB volume <Mac OS X Install ESD>.
When I booted from this USB volume to install Lion, I got a utilities screen. I didn't know how to proceed with that so I rebooted and clicked on my <Lion install.app> that I downloaded. It said an update was available and I downloaded it and installed 10.7.3 without issue.
The app disappeared from  my iMac. ( I do have it on a backup drive albeit not updated to 10.7.3)
Now I am wondering how do I upgrade my USB installer and also upgrade my MBPro without downloading from the store again??
I copied all the files from the USB Install drive to another disc, made a folder and have made a .dmg of it.
But if I use it I still would have to download the update.
    Thanks for your consideration.

    Thanks Kappy,
I just found this about using RecoveryDiskAssistant.dmg
    http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/ss/Using-Os-X-Lions-Recovery-Disk-Assistan t_4.htm
Could I run this to an external FW drive or the outdated USB and then attach it to my MBP and install from it?
    Peace.

  • XI standard upgrade, the installation keeps on being interrupted.

  • Creative Suite CLP upgrade & failed installation

I'm trying to install the upgrade for Creative Suite 2.3 Premium and I try to install Acrobat 8 PRO, but the installation keeps failing. I type in the serial numbers that I have. I tried it both with and without the dashes in them, and the software says invalid serial number every time. I tried to set up an e-license for this since it says that Acrobat 8 needs to have an e-license, but when I click start on the setup e-license page, it says "No [order] result found." Do I need to set up the ALM or should it work with the serial number and if I need to set up the ALM, why can't it find my order? Any help?
    Jonathan

I have downloaded the Creative Suite 2.3, saving them (7 total download portions)to the proper download file folder and everything went well.
Now I am trying to install the CS2 and it works for disk 1(seems like Disk 1 is automatic) then makes a request for Disk 2 which I don't have as this was an EDS (electronic download of the wuite). Then it closes me out cold. What am I missing as to the installation? Why doesn't these programs come on CD's so this doesn't happen?

  • Help needed with deploying Firefox 3.6.11 to upgrade existing installations including add-ons and plug-ins

Hello, I need to deploy Firefox 3.6.11 to existing installations to upgrade them from the old version. That part is fine, the problem I have is will the silent installation update any non-compatible add-ons or extensions? I will be using SCCM for the deployement part..
I ran the installation manually on a typical machine of which it gave the option of upgrading the existing client. Thats fine but the installation then prompted that 2 currently installed add-ons were not compatible with the new version. It lets you select and then "check" for later versions of those add-ins, actually checks for updates and lets you select and install those too!!
Now, how do you deploy silently with those options I`ve mentioned above??? Cant find any command line parameter that allow for that!
    Please Help!

  • HELP! eMac not accepting Tiger upgrade 'hang installation'

OK, I'm not a techhead but I'm learning! I'm getting a "panic" and "missing driver" msg when trying to boot Tiger disk on my eMac which currently is running Panther 3.9. It's freezing and displaying a 'hang installation'. There's something? I need, a driver? or perhaps something I need to clear or reset in Panther. The eMac is compatible, it's in the software. If anyone can help me out here I would appreciate it.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you using a retail Tiger install disc which looks like
That does not say Drop-in, update, or upgrade on it?
If not, then you are using the wrong disc, and that disc can't be used on an eMac.

  • Upgrade re-installs QuickTime icons and tray

I've repeatedly disabled the QuickTime tray icon and deleted the QuickTime icon off of my desktop, but every upgrade installation re-installs these features. Can you re-program your installer to respect my settings? I've filed this complaint previously, but nothing is ever done to remedy this frustration.

Looks like someone else has had this problem too, a while back, but no solution posted…

  • Upgrade Lic Installation

    Hi,
A couple of weeks ago my hard disk went on my macbook. I replaced the hard disk but when I went to install leopard from my original cd it told me there was a problem with my cd (it is a bit scratched) so I decided I will buy snow leopard. As leopard will not be installed on the disk, if I buy an upgrade Lic, will the installation process check that there is an existing installation of the software or it will just go ahead and install the full thing?
    Regards,
    Mike

You can't buy an upgrade license at this point. That was only available for a short time after Snow Leopard was first released. However, you may be under the impression that the $29 retail copy of Snow Leopard is an upgrade requiring Leopard... it isn't. It's a full installer, not an upgrade.
Just make sure that your MacBook meets [Snow Leopard system requirements|http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html].
