Archive to disk puzzle

Dear Team -maybe what I am trying to do is not possible?
It is this: I want to put my project on disk for someone else to complete and burn on another mac. I have given the disk itself all read and write permissions. I then archive the project and give the project file itself the same blanket permissions. However in get info ‘ownership & permissions’ for the project file there is no box for ‘Apply to enclosed items’ .
The disk burns, but when I try to open it I get the message ‘the file seems to be write protected and cannot be opened” and the permissions have reverted.
Any help would be very much appreciated as this is driving me mad!
Thank you
imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

That is good news! However, at the risk of appearing dumb, this is what happens: I follow insructions and from Get Info I give read and write project file permissions to 'others'. It then tells you to click the 'apply to enclosed items' box at the bottom of the menu - but there is no box on my menu. Then when I save the project on to a DVD and reinsert it to check it works, I get 'the file seems to be write protected...' message and it won't open at all.
I tried saving the project to desktop and the permissions stayed in tact, but when I burn from this file it again reverts to the restricted permissions. I have given blanket permissions on the actual DVD.
Any further thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks

  • Archiving Vs. Disk Image

    Greetings,
    When does one want to Archive a Project versus creating a Disk Image?
    Also, once a Project is either Archived or a Disk Image created, is it 'safe' at that point to purge the original file(s) from which the Archive or Disk Image was created?
    Thank you!

    Hi GLT
    Welcome to apple discussions. I create a Disk Image so I can lower the burn speed using Roxio Toast. Lower burn speeds tends to improve or insure the best playback possible on a DVD. Once that's completed and I have as many copies as I need then I purge said project from the system. If I need an additional copy at a future date then I use Toast again for an exact copy of the completed DVD.
    Archiving is useful for backing up or transferring an iDVD project to another computer. Tends to be very time consuming also since the files are often massive.
    You can archive your iDVD project to back it up or transfer it to another computer. This is useful in an environment with several computers, such as a computer lab, where only certain computers contain a SuperDrive for burning DVDs.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • Can't Archive with Disk Utility

    I want to create a .dmg of my hard drive with Disk Utility before installing 10.5. I have tried to select the device, the volume and individual folders on the drive and Disk utility won't create a .dmg of them to the same drive, a DVD or external drives. It reports an error : resource in use.
    The same is true if I boot from the 10.5 install disk and try to install with archiving from the 10.5 install DVD. How can I back up my files before installing 10.5?

    I have never done it but it's possible that you have to create the .dmg using the startup disk?
    You are trying to archive a running system - that may be the problem
    Reboot with the Tiger disk (not Leopard) and use the DU on that disk.
    See if that works.

  • Archive, Repair Disk Permissions, etc. problems

    I have problems trying to archive files/folders. I get an error message: "The archive's list of contents cannot be created." I tried repairing disk permissions and it would still have that error message.
    Later, I decided to try to use Onyx, however, I couldn't access it and suggested to repair disk permissions and restart Onyx. I did that it still have that message. I later tried in another account, then in Safe Boot in my primary account and nothing changed. I can't even uninstall Onyx unless I repair disk permissions.
    I seemed to have problems syncing my iPod Touch 2g with iTunes saying that it couldn't sync because there was another sync client. I'm not sure if this is also related.
    It seems like that there is a system wide problem.

    I did stumble over that same thread and attempted to follow it. Something didn't work. I wasn't sure where '/tmp' was and using Terminal to perform the operations somehow didn't solve it. After revisiting the thread you posted, I figured out what was tmp which was located on the Macintosh HD -there was /tmp. Then I followed the steps and voilà, the archive did work. Along with Onyx and everything else.
    thanks!

  • Remove user account and archive as disk image error

    Hi guys, I'm having some troubles removing a user from a MacBook running 10.6.6. I want to remove the user and archive their home folder as a disk image (in case I ever need to get access to some of their files in the future). I know it's a fairly straightforward process, I've done it before. I log in as admin, go to system preferences, accounts and then select the account and press the "-" button to remove it. I select the "Save home folder in a disk image" option, and click okay, but all I get is the following error message -
    "Unable to delete the user account xxxxx
    An error occurred while backing up the user's home folder."
    No details as to the error, but the console logs give me this info:
    7/02/11 5:28:46 PM [0x0-0x52052].com.apple.systempreferences[756]
    2011-02-07 17:28:46.418 writeconfig[763:903] DIHLDiskImageCreate failed: 999 (options:{
    I've done this many times before, without a hitch - this one is really giving me grief, so any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Matt

    Does Disk Utility give your hard drive a clean bill of health?
    In any case, I wouldn't try to archive a user's data this way anyway. Far too often I have seen disk images fail to mount with the "no mountable filesystems" error, leaving all the data inside of them irretrievable. It's a much better idea to archive the data into a disk image, and then test that the image correctly mounts, before deleting the user account.
    This Terminal command will make a disk image of the user john's home folder and save it in /Users/Shared:
    sudo hdiutil create -srcfolder ~john /Users/Shared/john.dmg

  • Reinstallation & Cleaning Archives off disk

    First problem: I can't tell if the Tiger DVD I have is a full install or an upgrade. The disk says, "MAC OS X Tiger, includes Xcode2, CPU drop in DVD, v 10.4". I purchased a machine with Puma installed but it didn't come with software so I purchased Tiger separately and thought it was an upgrade, but now I am not sure. Second problem: I first installed Panther and then installed Tiger thinking I had to have Panther installed before I could install the Tiger OS. I archived the first two configurations (Puma and Panther) and then installed Tiger. My 20gb disk is getting full just from the installs! I want to delete the archives but I fear I might be deleting something I may need if ever I need to reinstall Tiger. I don't have the copy of Panther that I used as I sold it with another computer. I also can't access OS 9 so I must have installed over it when I installed XCode2 - is that how it works? I am obviously new to the apple world. Your help in getting me out of the dark would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do you archive a disk with AirPort Utility version 6?

    Has anyone figured how to Archive Disks with AirPort utility version 6?  I can see both drives but it refuses to do an Archive in version 6?  (I don't even see a button to do so in the UI?)

  • Monitor archived log disk usage

    is there an easy way to monitor the disk usage on
    archived redo logs (/archive in unix platform) in
    plsql (general user if possible)? Thanks.
    - Zack Hu

    You cannot easily do it from PL/SQL. You would need to write a shell script to do it.
    We use a script that uses df -k and awk to find the percent used foreach ofthe mount points, then depending on thresholds, we send an email.
    It goes something like this (O/S Sun Solaris 9.5
    filesystems=`df -k|awk '{print $1"!"$6"!95"}'|tail +2`
    for f in $filesystems
    do
       fs=`echo $f|awk -F! '{print $1}'`
       perc=`echo $f|awk -F! '{print $3}'`
       mnt=`echo $f|awk -F! '{print $2}'`
       chk=`df -k $fs|tail +2|awk '{print $5}'|awk -F% '{print $1}'`
       if [ $perc -lt $chk ]; then
          email dba with $mnt $perc and $chk
       fi
    doneThere is, of course, a lot more error checking and stuff, but that is the gist.

  • Pacman on rsync-ed disk - puzzling [SOLVED]

    I usually keep a system backup on an old box just in case. I recently migrated to arch and decided to redo the backup, so i made a basic install of arch on the old box, then
    rsync -av / old_box:/ --exclude-from=my_exclude_list* --delete
    as i usually do. Everything went fine, except that running pacman -Syu on the old box after the sync produced a huge list of pending upgrades. That was puzzling because the pkg cache (isn't that where pacman looks to compare installed vs available ?) must have been copied along with everything else and the main box is up to date. I did pacman -Syu anyway and it downloaded everything, but refused to install saying the packages already existed on the system, which is hardly surprising as it had just been synced. So if the packages already existed, why on earth did pacman dowload them all over again ?

    /home/michael/qBT_dir
    /mnt
    /media
    /etc/rc.conf
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    edit : I must have overlooked something, i reinstalled arch on the old box, rsync-ed everything into it from the main box, (with some additions to the exclude file i had forgotten, namely /proc ,/dev/ , /etc/hosts.* and /etc/rc.local) and now pacman -Syu works just fine, fetching only what's new and without complaining. Rsync is a much better backup tool by the way, because you can select what you want transferred. If i had been using partimage, the system would have a lot of wrong confs for the old machine.

  • Is there a way to archive disks?

    I have a bunch of zip disks that I need to access old projects from quite frequently. There are about 4 dozen of them and it takes quite a while to search through them, even if I have the approximate date the project was originally done. I was wondering if anybody could tell me if there is a way to archive these disks and keep the archive info. on my hard drive so I don't have to keep searching through each disk manually every time I need to find something. Any help received would be gratefully appreciated!

    You mean catalogue the disks?
    You may find something here

  • I have a clamshell last upgraded to Panther-I "lost" ,disk need reload

    I have a graphite that I was about to put Tiger on. A pal tweaked it to accept my OSX10.4 already.
    A bad break up included the X taking all my original install disks to various systems and programs...even mac (he is anti mac...so you can guess why he took them out of my cd file case).
    As luck would have it , I had a serious system failure due to hi house temp (was in in AZ and my fusebox was out. The poor fish boiled. It was still 107 in the office when I came home).
    It is physically recovered with the swollen battery replaced. I can get it running to a point but it needs to have an OS reinstalled.
    Least has interactive screens instead of white screen of death or sad mac.
    The problem...I had been up all night finishing teh sounbdtrack to a 60 minute animated feature in progress. Months of work...
    not to mention children's photos. I save to an external once a day before bed. But I was out during the heat wave (having 2 broken  teeth pulled- was a while)
    How am I going to be able to install and archive? I have a disc with 10.1  that was part of my other ibook and it has the liscence to both machines written on the cover. But you have to archive with disk of last OS used to save the data in order to retrieve any salvageable data...right? Do I have to buy Panther all over again and not on sale (last disk was part of a 79 dollar upgrade)?!
    I don't know many Macophiles personal to borrow the disc from long enough. The Mac store in Mesa AZ  didnt even have a full disk for panther. They were able to look around with a boot copy, but not open any major files or mirror save the drive without a full OS.
    I finally have the money to do so.... but I want to be sure before buying Panther new in the box. I know the data could be corrupted but if I can save half  of it.....
    that is months of work and of my children's lives.
    A retrieval agency would have to install an os ... so I have just as much chance to get the data. Or at least get the data where a retrival team could reach it.
    any thoughts or similar events with positive results in a fix?

    I'd ask the store in Mesa to copy the animation and your photos onto an external drive and then burn them to a CD for your safe keeping, as they seemed able to access your data when you were there last.
    As secondhand Panther or Tiger OS's are expensive you could first try to boot in Safemode to see if that fixes any directory problems.
    Starting up in Safe Mode
    If heat has caused the problem then no software new or used is going fix failed hardware components so don't rush into new disks before you know your hardware is OK.
    It would be better to first run the Apple Hardware test CD if you have it, to see if your disk and logic board are OK. Running the extended test is preferred.
    If you don't have  a copy, maybe the store has one they could loan you, or you could possible burn your own from this Apple download site, depending on your model.
    Your early model clamshell graphite may fit the very first one for the iBook, but I am not sure which iBook you have exactly.

  • Deleting time machine backup files from old time machine disk

    I have an external USB HD that USED to be my Time Machine backup disk. I have replaced it with a newer FW HD and use the old one for archiving files, disk images, etc. The old disk still had 100gigs of backup files on it from time machine. To free up space, I thought I'd drag a few months of backups off the old dick into the trash. This worked. But I can't empty the trash. When I go to put the backup folders BACk on the USB disk, I get an error. So they are stuck in the trash.
    Any help? Thanks.

    I have always understood that there is no need to delete backup files from Time Machine.   Once it reaches 'full' it begins to delete them sequentially of its own accord.

  • How to exam archive logs

    System filled up archive-logs disk unexpectedly. This may caused by some unknown application process. How can I tracking this?

    Hi James:
    You better find out which application fills up the archive log destination "unexpectedly". You should also write a script to monitor the archive log destination. If its usage reaches to a certain percentage, says 80%, then kicks off a backup process to backup the archive logs.

  • Backup required on server disk

    Hi,
    I am very new in taking backup using BRTOOLS,
    But problem is that i have no LTO drive , when i run brtools, error give tape Drive not found.
    could you please tell me where i want to change so that i took backup on the server drive, because i have lot of space on server drive.
    points will be rewardable
    please i am stuck on that points.
    Thanks & Regards
    Arpan saini

    HI
    You should make some changes in init<SID>.sap  , remember to save a copy of the file before change.
    remote_host = "host where your backup should be"
    stage_root_dir = "where to save backup"
    archive_stage_dir = "where to save archives"
    backup_dev_type = disk
    stage_copy_cmd = copy
    remote_user = "your user on the host"
    Then use brtools to make a backup.
    I have used those backups for system copy.
