Archive Utility Help!

It appears that I have "lost" my archive utility. It no longer exists. Therefore, I cannot open any .zip files or .app or, anything! How can I get it back? Or is there a different method?

You can restore a new copy as follows:
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD. However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
• Click on the "Go" button .....
• Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
Extract or Install........
7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
11. Type in your password, click “OK”
• Pacifist will begin to extract files.
12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
Notes.....
• Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
Stop
Leave original alone
Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages
You can also download TheUnarchiver - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

  • What is the maximum file size allowed by Yosemite's Archive Utility?

I've seen radically different answers to this question, ranging from ".zip files have a 4GB size limit" to "no limit other than the OS maximum file size". It's been very difficult to find current info on this.
I have lots of large folders full of recording projects --- I'm talking up to 45GB or so --- and I've been experimenting with different methods of zipping them in preparation for cloud backup. Several applications have been willing to zip my enormous folders into archives, but then choke when unzipping them, telling me that the files cannot be unzipped or are corrupted. Using the "Compress" shortcut in the finder has so far yielded the best results, keeping all necessary resource forks, etc., and unzipping properly, even when other apps have insisted the files are corrupted. However, I'm afraid to continue with this procedure until I can get a straight answer on this issue: have I just been lucky so far? IS there an actual size limit?
...It only seems to work when I both zip and unzip with the Archive Utility. Other archiving apps will either render the included projects unreadable by my recording software when zipping (I suspect because of alteration or stripping of resource forks), or will refuse to read the giant .zip archives generated by Archive Utility.
I've set up the Archive Utility to produce .zip files, as I feel these are the most likely to be recognized by a variety of cloud storage services.ny
...Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
The 1,048,576 rows & 16,384 columns is the

  • How do I bypass Archive Utility?

I am trying to use Masterwriter on my MAC. It is a songwriting software that stores it's files in ZIP format. You open the program and the files are accessable (you never actually go directly to the file). When I DO go to "look" at the file where it is stored (not to open it), the file name is in black font but there is an exclamation point next to the file name. What does that mean? It can't mean that it "can't find the file" because when I open program and click on the songs, everything is there. I have the same program on my Dell laptop. The developer tells me that the files are in the same format (zip) and can be used in either their MAC version or their PC version. Here's where it gets reallky weird. I can create a song on the MAC and save it, export it onto a flashdrive, import it into the program on the Dell, and it works great. When I try it the OTHER way (Dell to MAC), I can "see" the files on the flashdrive, but the are in grey font (with exclamation point) and I cannot select them.
What/where/how can I get the MAC to allow Masterwriter to import these ZIP files using MW software? Is the problem because MAC thinks it's supposed to only use Archive Utility for all ZIP files?  Help!

  • Cannot unzip .zip even with Archive Utility

    Hi,
I have problem unzipping a .zip file. When I use the Archive Utility to unzip it, it yields a file with the same name with .zip.cpgz on its end. When I subsequently make another trial - to unzip this new file, it yields the very same file only with .zip.cpgz 2 in the end of its name. A repeated process (now with any of these files, either original, first .cpgz or second .cpgz 2) yields a file with appropriate .cpgz #. Repeating the process further seemed to me futile. I hope writing here would in the long run yield an unzipped original .zip file.
    Many thanks for your help,
    pwyll.

You probably won't see this, but did you ever zip a file during this time and then unzip it with another program and find data missing? The same thing happened to me where I zipped an assignment with archive utility, then when I tried to unzip it it would just make copy after copy. Once it was unzipped by my professior there was missing data. THen when I downloaded another program to unzip the original zipped file, that data was missing, too! I tried it again and zipping the file kep deleting part of my file!

  • Apple to resolve my archive utility issue

Apple has to resolve my archive utility issue with the error message  Error 32: Broken Pipe.  Apple says I have to re-install the Yosemite 10.10.2 software.  I am totally against re-installing the software for the simple reason that Archive Utility is "untar" the files with tar.gz file.  I am really unable to download and install some of the software that comes with tar.gz extension. It is really frustrating.
Apple has opened the case but since they told me to re-install the software which I declined and advised them to close my case.
I want to talk with Apple Software Engineer team but Apple said they could not connect me with their Software Engineer Team.
    With regards,
    Vasu

So, what do you expect us to do? We can't contact the Apple Software Engineering team, either.
If you don't want to reinstall to get Archive Utility working again, use tar in the Terminal. Type man tar at the prompt for help on using it.

  • Unable to open zip files with Archive Utility or StuffIt

    Hello,
I am running Mac OS X 10.7.3.  I have been attempting to download and install the Eclipse Java IDE from both www.eclipse.org and from a Stanford course website.  In the first case the file is offered as a tar.gz and in the second case it is a .zip.  When I attempt to open either file using Archive Utility or StuffIt Expander I get a never ending pinwheel.  I am forced to restart to get Finder working porperly again and quiet the fan down.  My wife's computer, also running Mac OS X 10.7.3, can extract the files without a problem.

  • The Archive Utility won't stop trying to unarchive

    hi there,
i downloaded a zip drive yesterday and the unarchive utility won't stop. i pressed cancel, and the cancel button greyed out. i've gone to force quit and it doesn't do anything. i've tried to shut down the computer and it says the shut down was canceled by the archive utility. any suggestions?\
    thank you!

try killing the process from Activity monitor.
if that doesn't help kill the loginwindow process that belongs to your user using Activity monitor. this will force an immediate user logout. if all else fails hold the power button to force a shutdown.

  • Archive Utility problem

Hello I am having a problem with compressing files when I right click and try to compress (zip) files. An error messages comes up that says "the contents list cannot be created for compressing."
It works again if I restart, but it stops working again after awhile.
I have tried repairing permissions and running Applejack to no avail.
I have the latest Mac Os Leopard
Any ideas? I tried deleting the archive utility preferences.

    HI Kevin,
Make sure you have enough free disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
If you have any third party compression software installed, that could be causing the problem.
Download and install the 10.6.2 combo update and see if that helps.

  • Archive utility "Error 32 Broken Pipe"

I'm looking for some way to fix archive utility. It will not open any .tar files, and I can not do it from the command line either. When archive utility tries to open the .tar files, it gives an error message: "Error 32 Broken Pipe" always. Is there a solution to this?
    Using version 10.5.8.
    Thanks

  • Archive utility not setting permissions

    Hi All,
I am hopeing someone can help me out with this wierd issue I am having.
For some reason now when I expand zip files with the archive tool it creates files with no permissions.
    ----------  1 dalupus  staff     10805 Aug 25 19:27 1356724322803Log.txt
Is there an option somewhere to tell the archiver what permissions to give files when expanding them?
My understanding was that it was supposed to set correct permissions when expanding the files.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    If you launch archive utility,
    Go to Preferences:
Change the "Save Expanded Files" Path to anything other than the default.
    Attempt an unarchive.
Verify the zip file unarchived, then change the setting back to your preference.
    File / Exit
    Launch again to test.
This solved the issue for me.
My files were clearly unarchiving based on the disk and CPU utilization stats, but not saving to the same folder location.
    Not searchable via finder either.
    Now they work fine.

  • Archive Utility - FM 12

Is it possible to use the archive utility in FrameMaker 12 to create a usable archive document that is self-contained?  When I run the utility, it pulls everything together, but the links are screwy  -- main document links to one set of text insets, but THAT set of insets doesn't link to graphics. Second set of text insets DOES link to graphics, but main document doesn't link to those insets.  any suggestions?

It's best to contact Rick directly. He's created an Extendscript and Framescript version that has the same functionality as the late Bruce Foster's Archive utility. He was making these available via a charity donation (this was mentioned during one of his webinars - see: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/859487 and http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2011-June/023310.html ).
Regarding the Abode Archive_v2 Extendscript version, it seems like you get what you pay for... [sorry, too easy to let that pass]. The code is there if you want to tackle it, but it may be a daunting task.
The only other FM archiving tool that I'm aware of for FM is part of Georg Eck's Finalyser tool (formerly "ToolBox"), the Book Trransfer component (http://www.finalyser.com/help/#page/Booktransfer/book_transfer.xml.1.1.html), but this may be on tthe pricey side, as I think you have to get the whole enchilada.
If you do have Framescript, then there is a freebie ArchiveFM available at: https://framescript.com/?page_id=33597

  • Drive Utility Help Viewer "does not know how to handle selected URL"

I have Drive Utility 10.5.6, according to . I'm trying to reformat a FAT32 partition on an external drive to Mac OS X Ext. Journaled in preparation for using SuperDuper to back up my Mac HD boot partition. For a time, which seems to have passed, now that erasing the partition has been done. The Disk Utility Help wouldn't work. Instead of putting up topic information, I got a message saying "Help Viewer does not know how to handle selected URL", followed by an reference to an html file that allegedly existed inside a set of folders inside the app. Where, of course, Finder cannot see. Once the erasing was done, Help seems to have come back. I tried Apple Support, but could only get a reference to OS 9 Appleworks macros not working in OS X. No help at all. Is this a question? I don't know. Help is working now. But for a while it was very annoying. It must be one of those little windows glitches that no one ever bothered to fix.

In order to change a FAT or NTFS formatted drive for use with OS X you will need to do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If you have an Intel Mac and can partition the drive using GUID then you can have FAT32 and OS X partitions on the same drive.
As for problems with the Help viewer see:
In most cases doing the following will restore the Help Viewer:
    1. Trash the following three files, if extant:
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    2. Trash the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder.
    3. Empty the Trash and Restart.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on the Help Viewer for additional suggestions.
