Archived&Installed - Where did my free space go?

So, after countless problems with 10.5.7, i lost my patience and had to go back to 10.5.6, by way of archiving&installing...
Thing is, prior to reverting (i am glad i did, works smooth now!), i had around 35gb free, right after archiving and installing i had 16gb, and now after backing up and deleting the previous system folder i have 25gb...
Where did those 10gb go??

thanks for the quick reply nerowolfe, however, i have already deleted that folder and i still miss something between 5-10gb of space... is there any possibility that the a&i might have left some loose ends around my hd? any reason, or cause for anything like this?
It's possible.
There are some apps you can DL such as "whatsize" to find out where the space is going.
If you were having some problems, then some of the system log files might be very large.
thank you for the tip with the time machine, i guess im going to start using it...
Yes, it costs next to nothing and sometimes is a lifesaver; certainly a timesaver.
Another trick is to clone your HD before installing the update and install the update on the clone. That way if it does not work, you only lose the clone.
Did you use the manual download for the 10.5.7 update? I, and others, have found the autoupdate to be problematic at times.

  • Archive & Install, Where did my printer settings go?

I just upgraded to Leopard from Jaguar on my PowerPC G4, by way of Archive & Installing. On top of my printer settings being reset to defaults, my RIP software (FastRip Pro) doesn't work with Leopard yet. Did I lose all of my previous RIP/printer settings? If not, where would they be in the previous systems folder?
I'm thinking about going back to Jaguar until the new RIP software is released..
If I do downgrade, will I lose my previous system folder?
    Any advice appreciated...
    Thanks

    Glad to help.
I suspect your settings are in the folder named "Previous System" but Leopard simply did not migrate it. That's why I think a clone would be perfect. Unfortunately you did not clone Panther, so your only hope os that the settings are in that folder I mentioned.
Download a copy of CarbonCopy Cloner - it's free:
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
Then get an external Firewire drive like a LaCie. I have their 500GB quadro. Then using DU on Leopard, partition it so that your MBP files will fit in the smaller partition when you clone it.
The other partition is perfect for TimeMachine - that's the way I use it.
Now, using CarbonCopy, you clone your Leopard onto the smaller partition on the external drive. Takes anywhere from 1/2 hour to an hour. The LaCie has FW800 on it which makes things fly.
After you have cloned your MBP, restart it holding down the Option button and the external clone should show up as a bootable system. Select it and boot into it just to be sure.
Once you have your Leopard preserved, then you can erase your internal drive using the disk utility on the Leopard DVD (boot into the DVD by holding down the "C" key when starting up.
Erase your internal drive including the free space and then shutdown. Startup with your original Panther CD and install it. You should be asked to migrate, but I don't know if Panther will see the Leopard archive. No problem yet.
After you get Panther running again, use Finder to look into the archived folder on the Leopard clone and see if you can find your old stuff.
Seriously, by the time you do all this, it might be that your new software will be available. But still, it's a great learning experience and as long as you have that clone, you have not lost anything except what was not installed when you installed Leopard.

  • Where did my free space go?!

Thanks to the HardStat widget, I looked at the free space on my drive last night, and I have less than 3 GB of free space left (verified with Get Info and Disk Utility). The problem is, I should have 25 GB or so! I got info on all of the root folders and added up their sizes, and even used my sad UNIX skills to navigate to the root and do a "ls -l -S -h" (thank you man ls) to see if there was something invisible and huge.
I've repaired my permissions twice, and ran a "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility. What am I missing? The only changes I've made in the past few days is setting up a scheduled backup in Carbon Copy Cloner (which ran twice without a problem), and installing Virex last night (which is about to be uninstalled). Help!!!!!
    PowerBook G4 12 1.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Carbon Copy Cloner if not allowed to complete its backup uses temporary space in the /Volumes/ folder to make its backup. See this thread for some suggestions:

  • App won't install. Says no free space, over 3 times needed.

I'm trying to install Chinatown Wars onto my iPhone 3G. It requires 188mb to install. I cleared 785mb to install it, but it still says that I cannot install due to insufficient free space.
    Any advice? Thanks.

This means the storage space on your iPhone was completely full or very close to it. As with a computer's hard drive, you should have some free storage space available or you may experience some operational problems and possibly the loss of data especially with 3rd party apps that create and store data.

  • Where did my disk space go? Folders don't add up to info box.

So today I realized that I only have 12GB of space left on my 256GB drive. I went to  > About This Mac > More Info and clicked the storage tab. It says that I have over 180GB in other.
I then took a look each of the root folders
    Users > 92GB
    Applications > 42GB
    Library > 7GB
    System > 7GB
    Total 148GB
I figured there was some hidden folders that could be taking up space. I downloaded the application Disk Inventory X and ran its assessment.
There was only 1 hidden folder that had any large size which was private at 7GB.
Add that to the toal you get 160GB. Were did the other 80GB go?

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Restart and it should go away.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Where did my disk space go?

    Hey,
I installed windows 7 on a 79 gb bootcamp partition on my rMBP.
When I check the folders on the partition through finder, the sum of used space is about 30gb
I only have windows and solid works on that partition
BUT finder and disk utility says it's only 19gb left. It should be around 50?
Where did 30gb of my disk space go??
I'm having a hard time believe that solid works and windows is 60gb?

In my humble opionion do not disable hibernation or reduce the size of the page file. Doing this will cause your computer and Windows to not run as designed. I know there are suggestions and explanations about how to do this, but doing so may cause issues.
If you need more disk space, use CampTune, or remove and reinstall Windows in a larger partition.

  • Yosemite install fails: "not enough free space in the Core Storage Logical Volume Group for this operation"

This is on a Mac Mini, running Mavericks, with a fusion drive (1TB/128GB), and 85GB free space.
    Any ideas?

I too experienced the Low Disk space event…  I hit the restart button and the install started again… I thought I got caught in a loop.
On the third time seeing the crawl bar for the Yosemite install I hit the Power Button and force killed the whole process.
Upon rebooting I saw horizontal black and white bars across the screen and VERY Slow everything.
Boot, Icon Bounce, Application Launch, Keyboard response… etc.
I was able to get to the Desktop and then I re-installed Yosemite.  Dragging a window was laggy, and jerky…
On the third install of Yosemite things improved some, almost but not quite as fast as Mavericks …  Some improvement but copy/writes remained very slow.
I now notice that some Applications such as “Clean My Mac” fail to launch and am still finding out if all are functional.
I have a home rolled Fusion Drive.
Currently I am considering a Clean Yosemite install and a TM restore.
Console and Activity Monitor report callservicesd and Chromehelper among others not responding…
I am on hold for the last ten minutes to Apple Support... They must be VERY busy today...

  • WHERE DID MY HD SPACE GO??

    Hello everyone,
I'm not sure if this has been posted in the past but, I've looked through the recent posts and didn't find anything that fit. So, I have a iBook G4 with a 30gb HD in it (27.82 actual). Recently when making a backup of my photo library to a dvd I noticed that my hardrive was nearly full. After making the back up, I took all the files that I felt I didn't need and trashed them. I then emptied the trash the correct way, etc... they're gone (great!). However, when I'm looking at my HD space I only see 11.4gb free. I do have some music and iPod stuff on here which totals 7.32gb and that's about it. I do have some addtional apps on there (Logic Express, Photoshop CS, Toast, etc...). I'm fairly sure that the mac OSX doesn't take up close to the 9gb that are still gone? Any ideas or does anyone know how much space the Mac OSX (panther)takes up?

I had a similar situation. When I first got my iBook G4, I had only about 11 GB free. The OS isn't neccessarily what's so large, it's the applications, and the support files. THPS4, World Book Encyclopedia, and iDVD, all came packaged on my hard disk, but I pretty much never used. iDVD and THPS4 both took up over a gigabyte each, and World Book had close to 800 MB.
The support files for the OS are quite large as well. Specifically, one huge example, are the printer files. There's close to 800 MB of data just for the printer information.
OS X as we know it exists in a sort of hybrid MacOSClassic-UNIX state. The UNIX undersystem exists, but generally isn't shown in the Finder. With the operating system spread between its classic locations (/Library/ and the such) and UNIX/BSD-ish locations (/usr/ /opt/ etc), it's nearly impossible to determine how much space is used by the OS, Aqua, and OS-related utilities (Quartz, etc.)
If you want to free up some space, I recomend you actually reinstall the OS from scratch. Go get an external hard disk (or an internal disk and a USB enclosure, if you want to save some money), or find some other location (large iPod, network to another computer with lots of free space, a Mac-Centric solution is recommended) backup your personal files, then wipe the hard disk and install the OS from scratch. You can then choose which components you want (Like support for HP printers) and which you don't (but not Brother printers). Should help you slim down the OS a bit. I think a default installation of Mac OS X 10.4.0 uses about 2.1 GB, but I could be wrong.

  • "Archive and Install" - Where did the folder go??

I have had many problems with applications crashing since my upgrade to Leopard and Apple recommended that I do a Archive and Install of the system.
I started it last night and went to bed.
When I woke up it was done...
Now I can not find the folder with my old system copy. Where is it and what is it called?
Looking at the space on the hard drive, I expected a big chunk to be used for this folder but I can not see that much of the hard drive have been used.

    Hi,
Open a finder window, click on your hard drive, and you should see a folder named "Previous System Folder"
Follow Apple's advice on how to delete it - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25461

  • Where did my free font go?

When I upgraded to PS CS4, as is the usual case in upgrading PS, there are some Adobe offers including a free font.  I selected the free font and it went through the downloading process but did not give me a location to save it -- and it was so quick that I had to download it several times to read that it was saving it to a temporary folder.  I checked my temp folders as well as did a search by the name of the zip file and NOTHING.
Could somebody clue me in as to where my free font is placed when it is downloaded since I did not have a choice of location as is the usual case when downloading a plugin or program or ...
    Thanks,
    MrSpurg

That would be hard to guess where it saved at. I would download it again as it should download to the same temp file. If the file is already there and you attempt to download it again the download will prompt you and ask you if you wish to over right the other download. That window will tell you where the file is at.

  • Failed to create zip file - did not free space

Hi,I tried to zip the inside of my camera folder and naturally did not have enough space.1. Creation of the zip file failed.2. Shows me that there is no more room left on device, i.e. the space was not freed.3. Can not locate the zip file it tried to create (it did not appear in the same folder as "camera" and can't find it anywhere else either). Can anyone help, please, can't copy files anywhere because no space left and don't want to delete anything. Thanks in advance,Dario

In regards to your original problem, but I can see two solutions without Link. 1, get an SD card and transfer some content over. The phone has finite space and this is the only way you can access storage from a computer without Link, so it is then only way to back up files (did I mention that is important yet?). 2, download Ghost Commander from the app world. It is a vastly more powerful file browser that can allow you to see your device storage particulars. I have none idea where a temporary ZIP file is located however, so this is not choice #1.

  • Where's the Free Space?

So, I've been slightly concerned about my lack of space and downloaded "WheresTheFeeSpace" to get an overview of my machine:
    Library: 9.44G (12%)
    Applications: 9.37G (12%)
    Users: 7.23G (9%)
    System: 3.19G (4%)
    Private: 2.47G (3%)
    USR: 914.86M (1%)
    Bin: 9.00M (0%)
    Sbin: 5.41M (0%)
The rest listed was nominal and 0% but here's the rub -- this program says I am only using 44% of the machine yet I only have 13.72GB left available!
A little over 50% of my machine can't be accessed and I'm clueless where to look for more space!

See what happens if you do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Then select your hard drive and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. See what space information is being reported.

So I had an iMovie when I first bought my MacBook in '07, but it was wiped out, along with everything else just a few months into my purchase.  There was a free iMovieHD for download for a while... no longer, apparently.  Can anyone tell me where to find one, or where there is a decent, free editing software?  Thanks in advance...

    Hi all,
I recently just did a massive clearout of my HD and I threw about 150GB of various videos and what nots into the trash and then proceeded to click empty trash. However, after emptying the trash, I notice that I only had 160GB of space left (previously had 40GB before the clear out).
