Archivelog Restore.

Hi Team,
I am working on the Oracle backup of 9i.
Taking the full database backup, which include datafile's, controlfile & Archivelog's
While restoring the database , I am restoring the datafile's using the restore database & recover database commands.
Now my doubt is that whether we always need to restore archivelog's also ?
If no then in which conditions those backuped archivelog's are usefull?
plz comment..
Regards,
S. Tiwari

Hi Dap,
Thanks for the reply,
restore database; -> use backup
recover database; -> use archivelog for all transaction after full backupI am using these two statments only for full database restore operation.
But my doubt is that , In what conditions I should restore archivelog files.
i.e RESTORE ARCHIVELOG ALL;
Plz comment if I am wrong anywhere?
Regards,
S. Tiwari

    Restore from veritas backup check with the backup documentation or contact with your system admin. Remove the validate keyword from your script and try again.
    Try with this one.
    restore archivelog until time "to_date('27-05-2008','DD-MM-YYYY')";

  • ARCHIVELOG files not found for Restore

    I'm restoring a 10g database from one server to another via RMAN. I've restored the CONTROLFILES & DATABASE files just fine. However, I am NOT able to restore the ARCHIVELOGs.
    The ARCHIVELOG files list out fine in RMAN when I do a "list backup". Here is the end of that all list:
    BS Key Size Device Type Elapsed Time Completion Time
    2726 1.35M DISK 00:00:00 30-APR-08

    BUT, when I do a "list archivelog all" so I can see the ACTIVE archivelogs & restore them, all I see are OLD EXPIRED entries.
    I've done a "catalog backuppiece" of ALL the RMAN backup files on the new server too.
    What do I do so I can "see" the valid ACTIVE ARCHIVELOG files so I can restore them.
    thanks for your quick response!

    1) I used this statement to restore my CONTROLFILEs successfully:
    restore controlfile from autobackup db_recovery_file_dest='D:\oracle\product\10.1.0\flash_recovery_area' db_name='Test';
    2) Here is "list archivelog all"RMAN> list archivelog all;

  • Restore Validate Database vs Backup Validate Database

    Hi,
    I want to add the following sentence after taking the backup using following command (backup as compressed backupset database plus archivelog;)
    restore database validate;
    or
    backup validate database;
    which one is best?

    It depends on what you are trying to accomplish, as per documentation:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14194/rcmsynta009.htm#sthref141BACKUP .. VALIDATE: Causes RMAN to scan the specified files and verify their contents, testing whether this file can be backed up. RMAN creates no output files. Use this command periodically to check for physical and logical errors in database files.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14194/rcmsynta051.htm#sthref796
    RESTORE... VALIDATE causes RMAN to select existing backups that it would use to perform a RESTORE operation, and scan them all to ensure that they are present and free of corruption.>
    Guessing what you're trying to do, I recommend:
    backup check logical as compressed backupset database plus archivelog;
    restore validate database;
    CHECK LOGICAL. Tests data and index blocks that pass physical corruption checks for logical corruption, for example, corruption of a row piece or index entry. If RMAN finds logical corruption, then it logs the block in the alert.log and server session trace file. HTH

  • Restore Databse

    Hello DBAs,
    Hope you can help. Due to the departure of my predecessor I have inherited an Oracle 9i Vers 9.2.0.1.0 database operating under windows NT. We upload data once a month for interrogation via a business intelligence system.
    Due to problems with the database we have tried to do a recovery using a backup controlfile. Having been assured by the IT department that full backups are undertaken nightly using Veritas software any archive log files older than 1 month are deleted to save disc space.
    The restore failed as it wanted archive log 922 whereas mine start at 945 and the backups do NOT include the archive log files. I can mount the database but it will not open with either resetlogs or noresetlogs.
    Are there any other options to re-open the database? I am not a DBA, just an IT skilled user.
    Thanks in anticipation,
    George

    Hi,
    We take backup database plus archivelog.So if we run restore database & recover database,will it restore the archive logs?.
    We use the following script.
    backup database plus archivelog;
    restore database validate;
    DELETE NOPROMPT ARCHIVELOG ALL COMPLETED BEFORE 'SYSDATE-2';
    host 'cp /oracle/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/Db_1/network/admin/listener.ora /export1/COLLPRD/rmanbkp/backup';
    host 'cp /oracle/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/Db_1/network/admin/tnsnames.ora /export1/COLLPRD/rmanbkp/backup';
    host 'cp /oracle/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/Db_1/network/admin/sqlnet.ora /export1/COLLPRD/rmanbkp/backup';
    host 'cp /oracle/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/Db_1/dbs/orapwcollprd /export1/COLLPRD/rmanbkp/backup';
    host 'cp /oracle/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/Db_1/dbs/spfilecollprd.ora /export1/COLLPRD/rmanbkp/backup';
    host 'cp /oracle/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/Db_1/dbs/initcollprd.ora /export1/COLLPRD/rmanbkp/backup';
    exit;
    RanjanWhen you execute just RESTORE DATABASE then only DATAFILES will restore but when execute RECOVER DATABASE in this case RMAN will restore need archivelogs from backup and will apply these.But when execute ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS then online redo logs will generate.

  • RMAN - Implementation

    Currently we do HOTBACKUPs and EXPORT... Now I am planing to implement RMAN. Can you please check the below
    steps and let me know what changes/steps should I further add in... EXCEPT RECOVERY CATALOG
    RMAN> connect target sys@rock
    target database Password:
    connected to target database: ROCK (DBID=3255117147)
    using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
    1. Configuration
    -1.a CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 2;
    -1.b CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    I have created 3 batch files and scheduled it as below mentioned days.
    2. LEVEL-0 BACKUP (SUNDAY)
    -2.a rman_backup_incremental_Level_0.rcv
    backup as compressed backupset incremental level 0 database plus archivelog;
    restore database validate;
    exit;
    3. LEVEL-1 BACKUP (Wenesday)
    -3.a rman_backup_incremental_Level_1.rcv
    backup as compressed backupset incremental level 2 database plus archivelog;
    restore database validate;
    exit;
    4. LEVEL-2 BACKUP (mon,tue,thu,fri,sat)
    -4.a rman_backup_incremental_Level_0.rcv
    backup as compressed backupset incremental level 1 database plus archivelog;
    restore database validate;
    exit;
    -------------

    Hi,
    you must understand the concept correctly
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 2
    your retention policy to have to duplicate copies - to maintain for recovery purpose.When you ask the ORACLE with help of rman to report the obsolete, then it will check with the copies and retention policy and which are required like arch2 will be not be marked and displayed as obsolete
    day1:- I have backup of database plus (arc1, arch2, arch3)
    day2:- backup of dababase plus (arc4, arch5, arch6)
    day3:- backup of dababase plus (arc7, arch8, arch9)
    - The two recent backup will be available all other backups are marked obsolete/delete..
    - arch2 and arch3 are in day1 backup, which is marked obsolete/deleteYou must check the type of backups you are taken in to consideration as given in day1, day2, ...etc.,

  • Failure in RMAN recovery

    I have an Oracle 8i running on Solaris 9 server, the following shell script is used to backup the database using crontab and it runs daily during off-peak hours:
    DAY=`date +%Y%m%d%H%M`
    rman nocatalog msglog=/oracle/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/daily_rman.log append <<!
    connect target /
    run {
    allocate channel c1 type disk format '/oradb/backup/ctrl_%s_%p_%t.rman';
    backup current controlfile;
    run {
    allocate channel c1 type disk format '/oradb/backup/full_%s_%p_%t.rman';
    allocate channel c2 type disk format '/oradb/backup/full_%s_%p_%t.rman';
    allocate channel c3 type disk format '/oradb/backup/full_%s_%p_%t.rman';
    allocate channel c4 type disk format '/oradb/backup/full_%s_%p_%t.rman';
    allocate channel c5 type disk format '/oradb/backup/full_%s_%p_%t.rman';
    backup incremental level=0 database;
    run {
    allocate channel c1 type disk format '/oradb/backup/arch_%s_%p_%t.rman';
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    backup archivelog from time 'sysdate-1' delete input;
    svrmgrl <<!
    connect internal
    alter database backup controlfile to '/oradb/backup/${DAY}.ctl';
    And the backup runs successfully. Now the problem when I take the backup output and try to recover it on another server running the same Oracle 8i on Solaris 9 and using the control file generated in the last step of the backup, the RMAN recovery proceeds without errors until the end of the recovery script in which startup the database which I get an error that the controlfile timestamp is newer than some datafiles, although the control file was taken last. Any ideas what went wrong?

    Hi Luts/All , let me explain more:
    The restore script on the target server copies the control file from the last step in the backup script and startup mount, then :
    rman nocatalog <<!
    connect target /
    run {
    allocate channel c1 type disk;
    allocate channel c2 type disk;
    restore database;
    recover database ;
    The RMAN session restore completes and the recover starts and stops at the last available archivelog, and asks for the next archivelog, is there a way to tell RMAN to stop asking for the next archivelog after the last available one and do the startup?
    Following is the output of the restore session:

  • Backups needed

    Hello,
    On a recently acquired database - 9.2 on W2003, I'm running out of space on the backup disk.
    Redundancy 1
    Crossckeck shows no expired backups
    I deleted the obsolite backups.
    There are still backups much older than the deleted obsolete.
    What is the way to make sure I need all the old backups?
    Where to check what is the backup schedule looks like?
    Thx,
    Dobby

    Hi Werner,
    That was helpful!
    'delete noprompt obsolete' is included in RMAN config parameters.
    The backup script is:
    #contents of rman_backup.rcv. "#" denotes a comment line, and will be ignored by RMAN.
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    #sql "create pfile=''d:\backup\initPROD.ora'' from spfile";
    backup database plus archivelog;
    restore database validate;
    As I mentioned before the obsolete bakups have to be manually removed.
    One could expect that they are going to be handled by RMAN?
    Thank you,
    Dobby

  • Synchronize RMAN and TSM

    Hi.
    Question is little off topic, but maybe someone can help me.
    I'm using Oracle 8i on IBM AIX. My database is backed up on TSM server (TDP for Oracle) with RMAN without recovery catalog database(RMAN works on controlfiles of database). During deleting old backups RMAN doesn't wait for confirmation from TSM server, and now some of my backups are out of synchronization with TSM server. I have 8 backup pieces that are on TSM server, but are not in RMAN database.
    QUESTION: does anyone of you know the tool or knows how to synchronize RMAN and TSM. There is a tool named "tdposync" which comes with "Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle", but it works only when RMAN uses recovery catalog. I know, that it is possible to write a program that uses TSM API to delete unneeded backups from TSM server, but I'm not very familiar with programming.

    Here are the details:
    RMAN> run {
    2> allocate channel t1 type 'sbt_tape';

  • RMAN and TSM

    I'd like to backup archive logs via RMAN and TSM on one node and restore from RMAN/TSM to another node. I always get permission error messages from RMAN. Any idea what's wrong?
    Environment:
    Oracle 8.1.6
    TSM 4.1
    TDP for Oracle 2.1.0.10
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • RMAN doubt during recovey

    Hi,
    I am learing RMAN and newbie in this field. I have a doubt during db recovey.
    I took full db hotbackup using controlfile repository of 11gR2 db. Then I restored in on the same host, directory structure was also same during restore n recovery as it was during backup.
    Backup steps:
    RMAN> configure retention policy to redundancy 2;
    RMAN> configure device type disk parallelism 2;
    RMAN> configure channel device type disk format '/home/oracle/rman_backup/ora_df%t_b%s_p%p';
    RMAN> configure controlfile autobackup on;
    RMAN> configure CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP format for device type disk to '/home/oracle/rman_backup/ora_cf%F';
    RMAN> configure backup optimization on;
    RMAN> show all;
    RMAN> backup database plus archivelog;
    Restore and refresh steps:
    *. On SQLPLUS, Shutdown immediate
    *. Deleted all datafiles, redo logs, control files, archived logs (from oradata and flashback area)
    *. On RMAN prompt:
    1. RMAN> startup nomount;
    2. RMAN> restore controlfile from '/home/oracle/rman_backup/ora_cfc-4124714611-20110510-00';
    3. RMAN> alter database mount;
    4. RMAN> restore database;
    5. RMAN> list backup of archivelog all;
    6. RMAN> recover database until sequence 6;
    7. RMAN> alter database open resetlogs;
    On SQL Prompt:
    8. SQL>select group#, first_change#, status,sequence#,archived from v$log;(This step was executed before recovering database, i.e before Step 6)
    GROUP# FIRST_CHANGE# STATUS SEQUENCE# ARC
    1 962626 INACTIVE 4 YES
    3 979898 CURRENT 6 NO
    *2        979836                      ACTIVE                     5               YES*
    Since upto SEQ 5 only , archives were present, initially I recovered db until seq 5, but  RMAN showed following error:*
    RMAN> recover database until sequence 5;
    Starting recover at 22-MAY-11
    using channel ORA_DISK_1
    using channel ORA_DISK_2
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-03002: failure of recover command at 05/22/2011 22:36:21
    RMAN-06556: datafile 1 must be restored from backup older than SCN 979836
    So I cleaned up system again and gave SEQ 6 next time during recovery as it is the highest seq, but since archivelog for seq 6 is not present nor redo logs are present (as far as my understanding rman backup doesnt back ups redo logs and I had deleted previous redo logs from host before starting restore and recovery), then how come recovery completed successfully?+

    First time when I recovered db, I gave command "recover database until sequence 5" as "list backup archive log all" was showing SEQ 5 as the highest SEQ till which archive log was generated. But when I got error for SEQ 6, then again I cleaned up the host and gave command recover database untill SEQ 6 (That time i queried from both rman "list backup archive log all" and SQL prompt from v$log). I just gave you the o/p of recover database until sequence 5 which I executed in 1st attempt.
    I want to know if archive logs are present till SEQ 5 only, then why did it gave that error for SEQ 6 in my 1st attempt and if SEQ 6 is till which it has to recover, then how come recovery happened as there is no archive log generated for seq 6 and there are no redo logs also on the host. As per my understanding of "backup database plus archivelog" command it doesnt copy redo logs in backup.
    What ever steps I have specified here are from my 2nd attempt to restore and recover db on the same host.
    Here I am specifying the o/p of commands "backup database archivelog" and "list backup" for you refrence. From these only .dbf, control file and archive logs are present in rman backup:

    I can resetlogs and that error disapeire
    Does anybody know that wrong with that script?
    Thanks

    Really the error is very strange realizing that if functions well for about 6 days or something like that.
    this is a notable line in the error.
    some targets not found - aborting restore
    I recommend you to check very well your targets path
    to be restore. I think that is the cause of the failure.

    The error "A backup or restore session is already in progress. (100:17:0)" comes from the MML -- the Tape Management software. It prevents you from running a RESTORE.

  • Difference in o/p in CROSSCHECK & RESTORE ARCHIVELOG VALIDATE

    hi,
    i m planning to restore and recovery from a backup(full hot Level 0) taken between '24.05.2012 11:41:00' AND '24.05.2012 12:03:07'; But when i run the crosscheck and restore archivelog validate there seems to be an extra archivelog backup piece reported in restore archivelog validate command.
    Also there was 2 backups taken on same day but different time
    LEVEL 0 ======> between '24.05.2012 11:41:00' AND '24.05.2012 12:03:07'
    LEVEL 1 CUMMULATIVE =======> between '24.05.2012 12:29:46' AND '24.05.2012 12:35:59'
    below the difference in o/p when i run the crosscheck and restore archivelog validate

    released channel: t1As you can see one extra archivelog backup piece is reported and that too from HOT_DB_BK_LEVEL1(LEVEL 1 CUMMULATIVE BACKUP) which was between '24.05.2012 12:29:46' AND '24.05.2012 12:35:59'.
    I m afraid if i execute the real restore command it will apply this extra archivelog from LEVEL 1 CUMMULATIVE BACKUP

    Yes that is true,but my question is when i run crosscheck i have all the required archivelogs availiable (6 archivelogs) but when i execute restore archivelog validate why it give (6+1) archivelogs why not only those 6 from LEVEL 0 hot backup
    i have clearly specified UNTIL TIME "TO_DATE('24.05.2012 12:03:07','dd.mm.yyyy hh24:mi:ss')" in restore archivelog validate but still it also give me extra archive log backup piece from LEVEL 1 backup taken way after TO_DATE('24.05.2012 12:03:07','dd.mm.yyyy hh24:mi:ss').

    Thx for u help.
    And about the users ?
    i need to create the "same" user in another machine ?
    For example:
    In this machine i using the "system" user, where i have my tables.
    Another machine, when i restore, my tables will go to the "system" user too? or i can choice? or i need to create one?A true backup is a copy of the data files at the file/block level. The restore is therefore a restore of the data files/blocks. Applying the redo (archive logs) is also done at the block level. None of that knows or cares (or needs to know or care) about logical objects (such as users, tablespaces, tables, rows, etc) within the database. so if you do a proper restore, you are restoring files to a consistent state and thus everything that was defined within those files will be there when restored.
