  • Redo log files are not applying to standby database

    Hi everyone!!
    I have created standby database on same server ( windows XP) and using oracle 11g . I want to synchronize my standby database with primary database . So I tried to apply redo logs from primary to standby database as follow .
    My standby database is open and Primary database is not started (instance not started) because only one database can run in Exclusive Mode as DB_NAME is same for both database.  I run the following command on the standby database.
                SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT FROM SESSION;
    It returns "Database altered" . But when I checked the last archive log on primary database, its sequence is 189 while on standby database it is 177. That mean archived redo logs are not applied on standby database.
    The tnsnames.ora file contains entry for both service primary & standby database and same service has been used to transmit and receive redo logs.
    1. How to resolve this issue ?
    2.Is it compulsory to have Primary database open ?
    3. I have created standby  control file by using  command
              SQL> ALTER DATABASE CREATE STANDBY CONTROLFILE AS ‘D:\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\TESTCAT\CONTROLFILE\CONTROL_STAND1.CTL‘;
    So database name in the standby control file is same as primary database name (PRIM). And hence init.ora file of standby database also contains DB_NAME = 'PRIM' parameter. I can't change it because it returns error of mismatch database name on startup. Should  I have different database name for both or existing one is correct ?
    Can anybody help me to come out from this stuck ?
    Thanks & Regards
    Tushar Lapani

    Thank you Girish. It solved  my redo apply problem. I set log_archive_dest parameter again and then I checked archive redo log sequence number. It was same for both primary and standby database. But still table on standby database is not being refresh.
    I did following scenario.
    1.  Inserted 200000 rows in emp table of Scott user on Primary database and commit changes.
    2. Then I synchronized standby database by using Alter database command. And I also verify that archive log sequence number is same for both database. It mean archived logs from primary database has been applied to standby database.
    3. But when I count number of rows in emp table of scott user on standby database, it returns only 14 rows even of redo log has been applied.
    So my question is why changes made to primary database is not reflected on standby database although redo logs has been applied ?
    Thanks

  • EMERGENCY: List of files in Recovery Area not managed by the database

    Hi,
    this is an emergency request....
    I have this data guard set up. And i accidently dropped online redo logs, standby logs and the archive log except the current online redolog.
    i actually ran to cleanup the whole directory which included the controlfile and the datafiles (was on the wrong location on ASM)
    but the controlfile and the datafiles did not get deleted. i can still see them on the ASM.
    and now when i am trying to restore the archive logs, but i keep getting error as shown below...
    WARNING: A file of type ARCHIVED LOG may exist in
    db_recovery_file_dest that is not known to the database.
    Use the RMAN command CATALOG RECOVERY AREA to re-catalog
    any such files. This is most likely the result of a crash
    during file creation.
    so when i did the below i was getting error as:
    RMAN> CATALOG RECOVERY AREA;
    using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
    searching for all files in the recovery area
    no files found to be unknown to the database

    RMAN-07527: Reason: File was not created using DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST initialization parameter
    number of files not managed by recovery area is 82, totaling 168.10GB
    But i do see those data files that RMAN is complaining as shown above in the ASM.
    I HOPE I DID NOT MESS UP THE CONTROLFILE and the DATFILES
    CAN SOMEONE HELP ME FIX THIS MISTAKE THAT I DID.
    Right now the data guard is running fine, the logs are getting shipped from primary and the getting applied at the DG.
    And i am able to see all the redo logs got deleted.
    But not sure how the deleted redo logs got created in the ASM (i did not create them manually)
    Thanks.
    Philip.

    Yes this happened on the standby database.
    I had to restore the archive logs because i deleted all the archive logs which got shipped from the primary.
    I did re-create the standby logs. But when i checked back the redo logs that i deleted came back again.
    I have no idea how they can back again. is it a feature of ASM where a mirrored copy of the files are stored on ASM and they re-create them when accidently dropped.
    Can you help me understand how the redologs got created again automatically.
    Right now the data guard is running fine but i do see the error
    WARNING: A file of type ARCHIVED LOG may exist in
    db_recovery_file_dest that is not known to the database.
    Use the RMAN command CATALOG RECOVERY AREA to re-catalog

    and when i do the following

    we do have the db_create_file_dest and db_recovery_file_dest pointing to the same location as +DATA
    How do i fix the above error?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Archive log not shipped to standby.

    Dear Experts,
    We have are using oracle 10.2.0.4.0 on AIX.
    And we have configured physical standby database which was working fine till date.
    suddenly i found that the MRP process is waiting for gap.
    i have all the archive logs on the primary system and all the logs are getting shipped to standby database expect one file.
    /oracle/PRD/saparch/PRDarch1_46811_755493268.dbf only this file is not getting shipped to standby database....due to which the standby is waiting for this log.
    log applied till 46810
    other logs are getting shipped.
    However i tried to manually copy this log to standby but it didnt start applying this log.
    and i heard that if i copy the log file manually then i need to register it...please let me know how to register it if it is the correct method.
    Please help to overcome this issue....
    Thanks,

    Edited by: Shankar Viji on Jun 21, 2012 10:51 PMHi,
    It looks for me that archive unable to read, it may be because of any header verification or corrupted blocks.
    Now do you have backup of archives ?
    If so restore it and retry again.
    If not, I suggest you to go with incremental scn for standby instead of recreation whole DR.

    Yes the max sequence generated on primary is same as the max sequence applied on standby.
    And what is MRP and why it is important can you please let me know abt thisWhenever you created standby database, Make a habit of tail to alert log file to monitor whats happening on the standby database, Besides MRP is an Media Recovery Process , which applies archies/redo on standby database.
    MRP can apply based on the redo transport, If you are using real-time apply then Redo will be writtened to the standby redo log files at the same time recovery will be performed by MRP process, If you are not using Real-Time apply then whenever a archive generated on primary that archive will be transported to the standby and applied on the standby database.
    It is recommended to use Realtime apply, so that you can avoid much data lost.
    However you are in 11gR2, You can use below query to monitor
    SQL> SELECT * FROM V$STANDBY_EVENT_HISTOGRAM WHERE NAME = 'apply lag'  AND COUNT > 0;
    NAME             TIME UNIT                  COUNT LAST_TIME_UPDATED
    apply lag           0 seconds                 431 08/05/2012 22:14:21

    in the 9i DataGuard manual at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96653/create_ps.htm#62941
    only has
    remote_archive_enable=TRUE
    (this is an instance parameter)
    Similarly the section "5.8.2.1 Primary Database Initialization Parameters"
    at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96653/log_transport.htm#1067609
    explains
    The last parameter, REMOTE_ARCHIVE_ENABLE=SEND, allows the primary database to send redo data to the standby database, but prevents the primary database from receiving redo data from another system.
    with REMOTE_ARCHIVE_ENABLE=RECEIVE on the Standby
    to Receive and archive the incoming redo data from the primary database, but only while the database is running in the standby role
    So, I guess that REMOTE_ARCHIVE_ENABLE is the important one. Not REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE.
    In 9i : http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96536/ch1174.htm#1023087
    In 10g it is deprecated : http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/initparams176.htm#sthref541 so that LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG is used.
    (and no longer appears in the 11.2 Reference)

  • How to monitor the successful archive log shipment to the standby database

    Hello,
    From the primary database, which data dictionary do I view to get information whether the standby database has received and processed the archive logs from the primary database. Both databases are 11202 on linux. Another question, which views on the primary database contain a flag sent by the standby database to the primary database to let the primary database knows that the standby database is up and functional? My purpose is to query the primary database for infomation that tell me the standby database is alive and functioning. I want to only query the primary database for these information about the standby database. Thank you in advance.

    v$managed_standby (standby)
    v$dataguard_status
    v$dataguard_stats
    Some of the new views are introduced from 11g, check below link too

  • Logs not applying on Standby Database

    I am afraid I am back.
    I now have a primary database and a standby database and logs are being shipped but not applied. Done some research and I have got to the point where in my alert log I find the following when I try to start MRP:

    My question therefore is how can I get out of this and get my logs to apply on standby?

    Hello again;
    Do you think if I tried to repeat the duplicate?
    Yes I think you should do this.
    Give me a few minutes and I will review my Word document and provide a step by step overview here as insurance.
    I always cleanup the standby before trying another dup
    OVERVIEW
    Step 1 - Password file fro standby - Copy from primary and rename
    Step 2 - Directory Structure on the remote server - Make sure noting is missing
    Step 3 - Oracle Net Setup - entry for the CLONE in your TNSNAMES.ORA on both servers
    Step 4 - SID_LIST_LISTENER addition ( assumes listener named LISTENER )
    Step 5 - Timeouts set in listener.ora and sqlnet.ora Both Servers
    Step 6 - Initialization Parameter File for the Auxiliary Instance
    Step 7 - Set SID for Auxiliary Instance
    Step 8 - Create an SPFILE for the new database by using a pfile with the INIT settings
    Step 9 - Shutdown and startup nomount on new Spfile ( Auxiliary Instance )
    Step 10 - Start RMAN and run the DUPLICATE Command
    SID_LIST_LISTENER Example from mine
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
       (SID_LIST =
           (SID_DESC =
           (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
           (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.2)
           (PROGRAM = extproc)
           (SID_DESC =
           (global_dbname = CLONE.hostname)
           (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.2)
           (sid_name = CLONE)
    Prevent Timeouts
    Add these to both servers
    To listener.ora
    INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT_ = 120
    To sqlnet.ora
    SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT = 120
    Then stop and start the listener.
    RMAN
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@primary auxiliary=sys/@standby
    Connect should return something like this
    connected to target database: RECOVER9 (DBID=3806912436)
    connected to auxiliary database: CLONE (not mounted)RMAN>duplicate target database for standby from active database NOFILENAMECHECK;
    INIT Extras
    To avoid ORA-09925 make sure the PFILE has audit_file_dest and core_dump_dest set
