Archiving an edited project

Just finished a couple rather large projects and I could really use the real estate right away. Can anyone share a methodology that will help me archive assets scattered across several drives and save the project so that I could re-capture the original tapes and be right back where I left off? Many thanks.

As Shane said, if you captured using TIme Code, and you still have the (properly labeled) original tapes with no breaks in Time Code, you can safely trash your Media files as FCP will accurately recapture if needed in the future. But if you used Capture Now, you’ll have a non-time code project and you’ll need to preserve the original Media Files as they can’t be accurately re-captured.
All still images, Motion files, Titles etc etc should also be preserved in the same folder as your Project File.
If you just want to save your movie as it is, you can print to video - BUT . . . it will only give you an replica of the movie - there will be no clips to edit in the future and all transitions are embedded, so they can't be edited either.
If you had several audio tracks, they'll be boiled down to one track - so no editing there either.
Alternatively, use Media Manager to copy the project to one folder on an external drive - giving it a new name. MM can move just the part of a long Media File that's needed - and junk the rest.
This will free-up loads of space if you have large or duplicated Media Files.
Then, after you're satisfied that the new project will play from that drive, you can trash the original. But remember, MM won't copy Motion files etc etc - check that everything's there before you trash the original. I like to make certain of this by having the drive which contains the original, disconnected when playing back the copy. You can't be too certain!
Render files can be trashed as you can re-render at any time.
Hope this helps.

  • How To Archive Encore CS3 projects

Question: How To Archive Encore CS3 projects
I edit my AVI files in Premiere Pro CS3 and then author in Encore CS3. When the project is finished, I want to archive both the Premiere and Encore projects. If I need to restore a project, I would recapure the AVI files from the mini DV tapes using Premiere.
What Encore and Premiere files and folders do I have to save so I can later restore the project?
What files and folders can I erase?
    Thank you for the feedback.

Adobe Premiere Pro is very similar to Final Cut Pro (non-X). It has a number of pros, including being bundled with the Creative Suite, which includes Photoshop.
Avid Media Composer is, IMHO the best "story telling" editor, but is a little more difficult and unwieldy when it comes to effects etc. In addition to being pricey, it also require compliance with the use of only AVID approved hardware.
Autodesk has Smoke on the Mac, which is an excellent effects editor, but with a $17K price tag.
My personal plan is to bunker my FCS 3 systems and run them until they drop, while slowly and comfortable migrating to Premiere Pro.
One big advantage to either of these editors (with the exception of Smoke on the Mac)  is that they are cross-platform, so if you learn the Mac version you can switch easily to the PC version - which protects your investment of time in learning the softwre as the future for the Mac Pro is also hazy.

  • Archiving an iMovie Project

    Howdy All,
    For iMovie 6:
    1. "Burn Project to Disc..." in iMovie sounds like it would burn all the files (maybe less cache files) in the iMovie project, as a package say, so you could reload it and it would be just like before (less cache files). Is this true?
    2. "Burn Project to Disc..." seems to be limited to one optical disc. Is this true? If so, this seems to be a severe limitation, most projects I have done using DV are easily bigger than what a DL disc can hold.
    3. If I archive the iMovie project via some other means (e.g. using Toast) will the project contain all the required resources (except, possibly fonts)? Assuming movies added to the project don't reference external movies!
Thanks in advance for any specific answers to these questions.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

    1. Yes, it's still editable.
    2. Unfortunately, you are limited to one disc.
    3. I use Toast 7, which can span multiple discs. (Toast 8 can, too). NOTE: Use the "Data" pane in Toast, NOT the "video pane". You also need to backup all third-party plug-ins and fonts you may have.

  • Archiving a motion project

Is there a way to archive a motion project similar to archiving a fcp project? I want to extract all video and photos used in the project and copy them to a saved file so that all media is together with the project, the same way media manager does this for FCP.
    thanks..

I didnt "miss" the 3.. it was actually the point of my question.
I think youre saying that archiving is a new feature to motion 3 and that this cant be done in motion 2 (and has to be done manually). My project has a lot of media. I tried using the media tab selecting all the media and then did open in finder, and this opened about 100 separate finder windows. Is there a better way to save a motion2 project with all its media than this?
What other "must have" new features come with motion 3 that would make it worth the upgrade besides archiving?
    thanks!

  • How do I properly archive or save projects so they could be used in the future

    Help would be greatly appreciated
How do I properly archive or save projects so they could be used in the future, but yet delete or trash the events folder they came from, to clear hard drive space

Hi to all of you Seniors and one junior [i.e. the the OP who started this thread]. I feel that this thread is a very vital subject relevant to practical and economical 'creativity oriented videography'!!!
As a newcomer I always have tried to have a grasp over this matter and the insecurity of 'incomplete knowledge' has been a constant mental niggle.
May I tell you that I have been struggling to 'hear' what I am now 'hearing' in this present discussion for over the past 10 months and have not been able to!!!
I shout out a million cheers to all the participants, OP included, involved in this thread.
May I request that this discussion be not allowed to die down but be used as a guidepost for all folks, especially those whose primary work is videography? By the time the this thread comes to an end, every reader should be able to make an 'informed and learned' decision of how to economically and safely preserve his work.
Salty's observation regarding opting for SD looks attractive just because of the lack of a suitable [read economical] means of having your work in HD...but, if in the coming days, were there to be any pathbreaking discoveries in terms of data storage, and hugh capacity drives are available at 'throwaway prices' would we not for the rest of our lives regret having done our works in SD?
Appleman's foray into this common problem, as to how it should be tackled, needs to be greatly lauded. Tom Wolsky's precise observations which obviate the need to check out and painfully realize some of the errors in Appleman's hypothesis neccessitate that the laurels, as usual, be handed over to him.
Now having said what I felt after reading through this thread, I would like these clarifications:
1] what is meant by having a backup of 'currentevent.fcpevent.'? How do we go about it. Where are we to store it? After doing this 'backup' can the 'currentevent.fcpevent.' file be deleted from the event folder?
2] Some word of enlightenment regarding the meaning and usage of 'event metadata '...i.e. say after 3 years of having the 'projected related event data' in cold storage, were one have the need to put his project back again on to the timeline for further editing...what are the exact steps which one should take?

I doubt this can be relocated or moved so you might want to just repost in the macbook pro area.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:

  • DVD authoring after editing project with FCP X

FCP X has extremely limited DVD authoring options within it. Can't put more than one short movie on a disc, only two menu templates to choose from, etc. So my question is what do I use to author a DVD after editing projects with FCP X? I know I need to use Compressor to set chapter points, etc., but what do I use to build the DVD menu and burn the DVD? I certainly hope I am not limited to iDVD only, which is not really a pro application, and I gather that DVD Studio Pro is no longer being sold. Amazingly, I asked this question at a One-to-One session at an Apple Store and the guy there suggested Adobe Encore ... I was totally shocked! Does anyone have an answer to all this?

Encore is very good, but you have to buy PPro to get it, you could look on eBay for a copy of DVDSP. It does look like Apple will not be offering a Pro Level DVD authoring package anymore, it's a shame as DVDSP works very well still and they could have just offered it as a standalone.

  • 'Edit Project' button grayed out for a project

I have been working on a project but it stopped working all of a sudden. The 'Edit Project' button is grayed out and won't let me click on it. The movie doesn't appear in the preview pane either.
    More information:
    iMovie 11
Using MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard
I have sped up some of the clips
    No other effects used
The earlier versions of this project (which are Hi-Vis Vest 1 and Hi-Vis Vest 3 in the screenshot) are editable BUT won't play in the preview pane but will play on full screen mode.
Anyone else have the same issue?

ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!! i too teach classes and need editing at my fingertips. among many classes i also teach our school district fitness class elementary program, and i found a k pop song that had a nig**word i missed it before when scanning for clean content (who thought koreans would need to use that word in a pop song especially all they have been through!)  so i had to move it out of the playlist asap . kids shouldn't be exposed to this language from me, as i don't promote such crap and i should be able to move that right away so that is out of the way. same with other classes cant have muthua f** or Sh** or A$$ or what ever its gotta be clean, but sometimes i miss **** ya know so its gott move. APPLE WHAT THE #$%^@#%$&**#$@!!!!!!
THIS IS IMPORTANT. so i have folders and sub folders like spin folder then all my spin playlists under that. im not making a new friggen folder for every song playlist are yu kidding??? GGGGRRRR
thanks yall for posting here, it made me realize IM NOT the crazy here, APPLE is.
i fear apples demise coming round the bend. too bad twas good for a while.

  • Users are not able to edit projects even with right permissions

    Hello,
We have a weird issue. Your help or inputs is appreciated.
A user is not able to edit projects in SAP PPM 50 unless 1)the project is created by the user and 2)user has access to ACO_SUPER auth object. For the projects, the user is trying to edit, we made sure user has write ACL access in the administration tab of the project.
Obviously, we can't give all users ACO_SUPER access. Please advise how to proceed.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Pranith,
You are right..ACO_SUPER is not recommended for all users, it's an super user access.
In PPM-Project management, there are two authorizations
    1) General Authorizations
    2) Project Specific authorizations
    General authorizations:
This is provided to user using a backend PFCG roles like 'SAP_CPR_USER' which contains business partner view access and other similar roles are assigned for project creation, template creation etc.,
    Project Specific authorizations:
This authorizations are provided using ACL 'Authorizations' tab within the project and here you have different authorisation activities like admin, write, read & none.
As you said, the user who creates the project will get 'Admin' authorization and after that if you want give access to other users, then you need to add manually users in the project definition-authorisation tab or you can provide default authorization through project role type.
Have you added the users manually in authorisation tab?
    Regards,
    Ravi

  • Archiving a FCE project

I know that in iMovie I can easily archive Events by going into iMovie, finding the external drive and dragging events from the internal hardd rive folder into the external drive folder. Is there an equivalent in FCE?
I have about 35GB of elements (video clips, music, etc.) that FCE knows where to find on my internal hard drive. I'd like to store these on an external drive. How can I move them to the external drive so that FCE knows where they are? Or do I just move them off, and then if I ever need to use them again, move them back onto the internal drive?
Thanks in advance for whatever advice you can offer.

    Hello Roger,
To archive an FCE project you need to keep the _FCE project file_ and any _source media_ that you used (video clips, stills, audio files, etc).
    Normally,
FCE project files are in the +Final Cut Express Documents+ folder
Video clips are in the +Final Cut Express Documents/Capture Scratch+ folder
Other media (stills, audio) will be where ever you saved them on your hard drive.
For project archiving, I usually copy all these files to a single folder having a logical name that identifies the project.

  • Edited Project Footage Disappears

This problem developed after hours of completing several movies successfully in iMovie 5.0.2. I save the movie as I want it, close iMovie, open the file again, and all of the clips that were once in the timeline all trimmed to my liking and filled with transitions and titles are now missing with the original uncut footage in the trash can leaving behind only the transitions and titles. No plain footage in the timeline. Just effects. Where did my edited project files go?
Another thing- If the first thing I do when opening the program is hit "Play" in the viewer, the movie (with edited files and transitions as I edited them) will play, even though they're not in the timeline or even in the trash. But when I click on the timeline and then "Play," only the transitions and titles that remain in the timeline play in the viewer. I'm very confused. Can someone help?
*Also, it must be noted that this wasn't the situation the whole time. At one point when I first started, I could save and open projects in their entirety with everything where it's supposed to be. Then all of a sudden, this problem started occurring, and only with certain files. Not all of them.
