After upgrading to Snow Leopard, Mail will not let me archive any mail. All archived messages re-appear in my inbox (I have tried archiving and placing in the trash bin). How do i regain control of my inbox?

The main differences that can cause a problem are scripting additions (64-bit vs 32-bit and security reasons) and the usage of dates (it is not as forgiving). AppleScript itself is basically the same, so if empty paragraphs are what caused your problems the update would have just been a coincidence.

How do I get rid of archives in Mail?

Gmail will sychronize to Mail on your Mac, they will contain the same amount of mail. So if you have 30,000 emails in Gmail, you will have 30,000 emails in Mail.

  • Archiving old mail messages

I am trying to archive old mail messages so they do not cram up my inbox. In the past I have successfully created a new mailbox for old messages, given it a month and year, and dragged messages across – but I can no longer do this.
When I try to drag a message across, I get the message 'Error: the message "xxx" could not be moved to the mailbox "xxx" - On My Mac". Can anyone help me out?
Not being able to archive old messages means that I have hundreds of already read messages in the inbox which causes, I think, another problem. Every time I open the mail program and click on an unread message, I am told that "The message has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it". When I quit the mail program and go back in, the problem sorts itself, but this happens every time I check the mail and it is becoming quite frustrating!
Happy New Year to you all!
    Regards, Mike
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Does the same occur when using the Move To or Copy To command instead of dragging messages manually?
Every time I open the mail program and click on an unread message,
I am told that "The message has not been downloaded from the server.
You need to take this account online in order to download it".
This indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the mailbox has approached or exceeded 1 GB in size (which is the recommended mailbox size limit for Jaguar and Panther Mail) or has some corruption.
An "overstuffed" mailbox issue can occur at any mailbox size but is more likely to occur as a mailbox approaches or exceeds 1 GB in size for Jaguar or Panther Mail.
Although your OS detail provided indicates you are running 10.3.9, you posted in the Mail & Address Book - Tiger discussions so I'm assuming you are running 10.3.9 and not Tiger.
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
When relaunching Mail, a new INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder. This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again and not risk losing any existing messages or new messages downloaded by the account while working on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
Post back here listing the package content file names and size of each.

  • Archive sent mail - Where did it go?

    Using IMAP.
My mail server has a low mail quota, so I need to Archive frequently, but I use multiple devices so leave what I can on the server.
    My archive settings are :-
Copies and folders: message archives: Keep message archives in: other: inbox 'mymail' on: Archive (Local folder)
Copies and Folders: when sending messages: automatically place a copy in: sent folder on: 'mymail@mydomain' (My IMAP) - the default.
Copies and Folders: archive options: yearly
When I select the inbox (on IMAP server), some mails, and click "archive", the mails go where expected (eg, Archive/Mymail/year/ inbox 'mymail')
When I do the same for sent items (on IMAP server), the mail just disappears.
Where does it go? How do I get it back?

If you are lucky, you might be able to restore individual messages. To do it, open Mail and then, open the Time Machine application (in /Applications/Utilities). Then, choose the backup you want at the right and you will be able to select messages and restore them.
After restoring them, they will appear in "Recovered Messages" in the Mail sidebar, under "On my Mac"

  • Can't open attachments of archived e-mails

We have recently started using Mail at our design agency.
Upon completion of jobs we have backed-up, restored and archived all mail into their relevant job folders.
We have then found, when needing to go back to old e-mails, the attachments cannot be read or opened.
Can anyone please tell me how to resolve this problem?

I don't know how .Mac's Backup works, but it seems to me that you're making some wrong assumptions here. For IMAP-type accounts, messages are stored on the server. You cannot make a backup of whatever is stored locally on your disk and expect to be able to use that as an archive of what is on the server.
For you to be able to do that in Mail 2.x, Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Keep copies of messages for offline viewing should be set to All messages and their attachments. It looks like you have it set to All messages, but omit attachments, which obviously won't work for your purposes.
If Keep copies of messages for offline viewing is set to All messages and their attachments, then Mail 2.x stores a local copy of the messages on the server using the exact same format it uses to store messages in local mailboxes, except the suffix of the mailbox folder in the filesystem is .imapmbox instead of .mbox.
You cannot import *.imapmbox mailboxes directly into Mail because when you do File > Import Mailboxes, Mail looks for *.mbox folders and ignores *.imapmbox ones, but you can easily overcome this limitation by just changing the suffix to .mbox. Note, however, that this won't work in your case either because your *.imapmbox folders don't contain full *.emlx files.
Note also that using the above procedure means relying on an implementation detail of Mail 2.x. It wouldn't work in Mail 1.x, for example, no matter what the settings.
The real issue here is that it just doesn't make sense to try to archive mailboxes that are stored on the server making backups of local data. The right way of archiving those messages would be moving them to custom "On My Mac" mailboxes in Mail.

    Hi,
Probably you can restore the archived archive mailbox by referring to the following thread if you have backups:

  • Archiving E-mails from Outlook 11

In Windows versions it was possible to Archive E-mails from Outlook into one acrobat file. This was so useful and was a great way to clear out old projects and e-mails that might be needed at a later date. I have spent a small fortune in moving from Windows to MAC with also purchasing Office and Acrobat Pro to now find problems such as this is very annoying .
I see in the Adobe Video a link to combine E-mails into a PDF. But its not there on my MAC. Will there be an update to address this very useful feature or am I missing something.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting. Many of us have been trying to get the Acrobat team to give more feature equity with Windows for years. The Acrobat team is mainly focused on the Enterprise market, and they haven't yet learned that more Enterprise customers are moving to the Mac. Maybe by Acrobat 20!

  • How do I upload an 'On my Mac' email archive in Mail to an 'On my computer' folder in Outlook for Mac??

I've installed Office for Mac with Outlook and want to import an archive of 'On my Mac' emails from Mail to a new folder created in Outlook's 'On my computer' section.
When I recently upgraded to Mavericks, I was able to import this archive back in from a system backup I'd made beforehand. I thought I would be able to do the same again now, but Outlook's import function won't play ball, not even after I have led it to the 'Mailboxes' folder of MBOX data that I've saved onto my desktop. Outlook's 'import' button remains greyed out and unresponsive, even after I've opened the 'Mailboxes' folder to expose the MBOX data.
I now know I am not alone in being unable to complete this task by the only method suggested in Outlook's 'Help' that is open to me - ie, to "import messages in MBOX format". I got nowhere at all trying the alternative, to "Import Apple Mail messages", where, after clicking 'File / Import', the options encountered bore little resemblance to those described in 'Help' - eg, to import, specifically, "Entourage information from an archive or earlier version" rather than the more general "Information from another application", whilst there was subsequently no mention whatsoever of "Apple Mail" after clicking "the right arrow to continue".
I've since learned from trawling internet forums that Apple and Microsoft MBOX folders are not the same, which is presumably at the heart of this. There are also various solutions proffered, involving either uploading the archive over an IMAP connection (which I do have, to Gmail) to a shared email account, or using proprietary software that either converts email data from Mail to Outlook friendly or enables it to be uploaded from one to the other. However, none of the simpler solutions are relevant (they tend to be restricted to particular mail clients, etc) whilst the others require programming familiarity and skills that I don't possess.
It's hard to believe that Microsoft could produce this suite expressly for Macs and, in the case of the Outlook component, implicitly to replace its Mac counterparts, yet for it to be incapable of doing so in the crucial, basic area of importing pre-existing Mac email data.
Whilst I have taken this up with Microsoft, I'm just hoping there might be someone out there in the Mac community who might know the answer . . .

Connect in recovery mode and restore, you'll get the option to rest the passcode during this process:
iOS: Unable to update or restore and iPhone and iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.

  • Restore Archived Lion Mail from Time Machine

I deleted a mailbox, thinking I could add it back, and synch with the server.  That worked fine, but I forgot that I had archived a whole bunch of mail on that account.   Now I want to retrieve the old mail.  I have a fresh Time Machine backup.  How do I retrieve my archived mail from Time Machine for a deleted account?

If Time Machine was backing up before you deleted the account, you can try to enter Time Machine from
~/Library/Mail.  See if the deleted account is in there.

  • How to archive "sent" mail to external hard drive

Accumulated and overload of "sent" mail and would like to archive them all  (including attachments) on my external hard drive. Would someone give me the steps to do this, as a regular archiving procedure, as done with a mailbox, did not work.  Thank you.

You can navigate to your Sent (mailbox) folder and drag and drop it to another drive.
First remember how many messages there are in the Sent folder.
Then navigate as follows to get to the folder:
    Users / yourself / Library / Mail.
At this point you will see a number of folders. Look for the one that identifies your service. Something like: POP-yourname, ....
In that folder look for Sent Messages.mbox. In there look for a folder called messages. That's where all the sent messages reside. Verify the number of messages there agrees with the number you originally noted. That is to confirm you have indeed found the correct folder.
This, like any other folder, can be copied to an external drive, or whatever.
The problem with this process is that each time you do it, you will be copying over a bunch of mails that have already been copied.
Note that all of the above is on the assumption that you are running OS 10.6.8.

  • How do I rebuild all of the folders under Archive in Mail?

Just installed Mavericks tonight. In MAIL, I saw two accounts (exactly the same) under ARCHIVE. I deleted one, but now both are gone. Is there any way to rebuild ARCHIVE. I tried selecting MAILBOX > REBUILD and nothing happens. Thanks!
