Archiving in Aperture??

It seems that there is no archiving feature in aperture and that the only way to archive is to create multiple libraries. Let me explain what I mean. I have one computer and work off my laptop, and I move around alot. I have way too many photos to store on my “working” library on my laptop hard drive. The vault functionality “merely” enables me to create a replica of a library. But what I need to do is to archive the large majority of my photos in a location NOT on my laptop (like my detachable hard drive). It seems the only way to do this working through Aperture is to create two libraries, one called (for instance) “working library”, which would exist on my laptop, and the other “master library”, which would exist on my external hard drive. One I’m done working with a Project in the working library, I would move it to the master library on the detachable hard drive. If and to what extent I use the vault functionality to back up either library is a totally separate issue.
Does this make sense? Is there an easier more efficient way to accomplish what I need to do? Given that Aperture makes such a big deal about its robust capabilities as a file management system, it is surprising to me that there is not a more explicit archiving work flow built into Aperture. Though perhaps I am missing something??
If this does make sense, is it possible to move projects from one library to another? If not, what I am describing would seem not to make sense.
Thanks for any help!

yes, that would probably work and be easier, though it raises a few questions, if you don't mind....
First, how would it work when I use the vault function to back up the library (still all on my laptop since I now still only have 1 library)? Since, I have the referenced masters on an external drive, they would not be backed up. However, this in and of itself doesn't bother me as the external drive is a raid 1 set up and so it is already in itself backed up. So what would happen is that the backup (or vault, if you will) of my single Aperture library would live "side by side" the referenced masters on the external drive.
Does that make sense? Is there anything I am missing?
I still find it quite odd that Apple has not provided an explicit archiving capability as distinct from its vaulting capability, but maybe it has in the referenced masters functionality and I just do not fully appreciate it (yet).

  • Camerea archive and aperture

This is kind of the wrong place, but since the Camera Archive is a FCPX option, I try anyway.
I have  Pictures and video on my camera.
Usually I save my Pictures in Aperture, and I do my filmmaking in FCPX (both Pictures and video).
So, my plan is to start in FCPX, make a camera Archive, and then import video and Pictures from the archive to my Library in FCPX.
Then I want to organize my Pictures in Aperture; is it "ok" to do that from this Camera Archive. I guress it`s the same as importing the Pictures directly from my camera card?

What you're proposing as a workflow with camera archives should work. I don't have Aperture, but since it would work in iPhoto, I assume it will work in Aperture.

  • An intelligent way to import already existing directory structure to Aperture

    Hello,
is there an intelligent way to import already existing big directory structure of photographs (over 2TB) archive into Aperture?
I have my catalogue on a disk created in a way:
date - short shot description (i.e. “2011-02-14 Name Surname (portrait)”)
              Originals
              Converted
              PSD
              Final
I would like, when importing “date - short description”, it to become an Aperture Project with the same name and subfolders Originals, Converted, PSD and Final to become Aperture Albums or Folders in that Project.
The only way I found is to create a Project and Albums in that project manually and then import all the pictures from the corresponding folders, one-by-one,  to Aperture’s Albums. I use references only to preserve the current archive structure on a disk as well.
    thank you for your time.

You can try and experiment with the various options in File->Import Folders as Projects, specifically the option Import Folders as  to see if you get what you are looking for but I doubt  you will get exactly what you are looking for.
One way to achieve your goal would be to import the projects and then once that is done create the other entities (either folders or Albums) once and then paste them into each project.
The only way to truly automate this would be to write an Applescript and unless this is an ongoing requirement by the time you developed the script you could have just created the structure and pasted into the projects.

  • DxO Optics Pro and Apple Aperture workflow?

I'm wondering if anyone here has workflow suggestions for using DxO Optics Pro and Apple Aperture?
I've been using DOP for a couple of years now and love it, of course. I am just starting to use Aperture to catalog, sort and arrange a large collection of images. I would like to be able to import images on my drive into Aperture and keep them in Aperture's library, and get DOP to do its work in small batches when needed (essentially the "Scenario 2" workflow that is suggested in DxO's support section for using Adobe Lightroom.) But is that even possible with Aperture? Needless to say, I don't want to lose (during import into Aperture or export to DOP) the photo file information that DOP uses to do optics corrections.
If the workflow above isn't possible, I'm open to suggestions. If I must process ALL my images with DOP first, before importing them into Aperture, I can live with that, but it would be good to hear from some experienced users before I just assume I have to do that.
    Thanks!
(By the way, I did read the other thread on here about DOP & Aperture, and it doesn't really go anywhere toward suggesting workflows. It just ends up discussion DNG files a bit, but that's about it.)

    Hello All,
I've been working on getting this one figured out with DxO for the last week or so.
While I can't report that I have figured out the secret of the mysterious DxO OP & Aperture workflow (there doesn't appear to be one), I have figured out some key info that I needed to know to get started with Aperture, and continue using DxO OP.
First, the main thing that I became curious about... What EXIF information is lost when importing into & exporting from Aperture. I especially wanted to know what EXIF information that DxO OP needed to do its processing would be lost. (I know there are EXIF info viewers that I could use to check the info for myself, but I wanted to here conclusions from the source.)
The tests were done with the very helpful tech support folks at DxO. We ran 4 files through their fine tooth combs. Two files were straight from the camera, one file was imported (not referenced) into Aperture then I "dug" for it within Aperture's Library using "Show Package Contents", and the fourth was imported into Aperture's Library then I did a File > Export... > Export Master. (As Hud46/Dave guessed above) All EXIF was identical for all 4 files, so DxO could do its complete processing on any of them.
Many of you may have known this already, but I wanted to be sure.
Now, on the topic of a usable workflow for Aperture & DxO, I'm still working on that on. I'm guessing that I'll be finding out pretty much the same that you guys have mentioned here, that they don't play well (enough) together yet.
Allen, I agree that DxO does need to work on their compatibility with Aperture (as they seem to have done with Lightroom) so any feedback to them about that would be a good thing. Having been in touch with them a fair bit on this topic though, I have found that DxO sees Aperture as something of a "closed" system. I don't know what's up with politics of all this, so I'm just going to keep asking for the compatibility and let them sort it out.
Jack, Thank you very much for your workflow suggestion. I will give it a try and see how it works for me.
For what it's worth, I did just do a shoot for a client and used Aperture & DxO OP together. At first glance it looks something like what you did Jack. What I did, simply, was:
    1) Downloaded images from the camera using Image Capture (I had already done this step actually) and put them in a folder.
    2) Imported the images into an Aperture Library (for just this project) as Referenced Masters.
    3) Sorted & rated them. Selected my Picks.
    4) Exported those Picks as Masters.
    5) Ran DxO Optics Pro on the Picks & saved the output.
    6) Delivered to the client, then archived that Aperture Library, DxO's sidecars & output to Hard Drive & DVD.
    7) Deleted all of it from my hard drive. (Why keep toting around, and having Aperture deal with in some way, 6+ GB of originals & thumbnails, etc when I likely won't need them all in that incarnation again? Hard drive may be getting bigger and bigger, but I can easily outshoot them.) Now, of course if I need to work with that shoot's Aperture Library in the future, I can't just work with in on the DVD, but at least I won't have to do my rating all over again.
Just thought I'd share that workflow in case it helps someone out with a similar situation.
Onward with the testing... I still have to figure out which way I should import my own main collection of images.

  • Can Aperture and iPhoto share library?

Is there a way they would be in harmony together? I need to keep the iPhoto usage around in my computer (that is where my whole library is) and also use Aperture..

Aperture and iPhoto can use the same referenced images, but adjustment made in one app does not show up in the other if that's what you mean.
What you can do is to share your images in both apps and then you can, in Aperture, go to 'File' > 'Show iPhoto Browser...'
The other way, from iPhoto, you can go to 'Archive' > 'Show Aperture-Library...' and have access to all images from within both apps. From the browsers you can drag and drop images.

  • About "referenced" and archived images in AP Library

Most of my images are archived in Aperture Library but I would like to know which images are "referenced" in order to consolidate them.
    How can I know it?

You can open the filters HUD and set a filter for "File Status" and check Managed or Referenced, to filter those images out that are stored inside or outside your library.
You can also use this to create a Smart Album with all your Managed or Referenced images.

  • How do I make my Catalog Settings stay the same for each new Catalog I create?

How to you set a default Catalog Settings parameter that is different from what the Adobe engineers have set us with?
I have 30" monitors here, so I want the standard preview size of every new catalog to be set to 2048 pixels.
I redundantly back up my catalogs via two different layers of hardware mirroring, so 'no' I don't want prompted once a week when I open one of various catalogs if I want to backup right then.
I have 50+ Terabytes of removable mirrored hard drive space, with individual project libraries that feed into 1.5TB master removable disk libraries, so I'd like to, by default, NEVER discard 1:1 previews, at least until Lightroom gets about 2000% faster in rendering them on the fly.
This is of hot topic for me since I just noticed Lightroom had been discarding 1:1 previews that I had spent large amounts of time creating just over a month ago as I've begun transitioning my archives from Aperture to LIghtroom.  At any point, I'll maybe have access to only 1/15th of the actual DNG's in my catalog because they're offline, so keeping full sized previews of archived files is extremely important for my workflow.

    John,
    That's simple & perfect.
    thank you.

  • Lightroom 3.5 Import Errors using Synology NAS on Macbook

    Hi all,
I've been trying out Lighroom 3.5 and I love it, with one exception....
When importing my archive (which is stored on a Synology Diskstation DS211j, accessed via an Airport Extreme), I get multiple import errors (around 5% of the total files), saying files are unreadable, unrecognisable etc. Some of the previews are also corrupt. I also get the "Server connection interupted" dialog in OS X Lion too, during the import. After Synchronizing the folder, it successfully imports more of the files yet still with a few errors. After the third or forth successive Sync, the operation is successful, with all files imported.
Now, this would point to a problem with my network connection or my NAS or its drives, however, this only happens with Lightroom. The files are not corrupt as they are imported sucessfully eventually. I work with the files outside of Lightroom all the time, and also stream my iTunes library sucessfully from the same drive, with no problems.
I have imported the same archive into Aperture, and encountered not a single read error or "Server connection interupted" dialog box.
Any ideas what is going on here?
    Thanks,
    John

I am having the same problem with my iPad and ios5 since I switched I have had the same issue.  I am a wedding photographer so I transfer about 2000 raw images at a time.  Also, is there a way to see a log of the old import problems.  Once I close out the error window I can't seem to find a way to see what exact files it had problems with unless they haven't been imported to the catalog at all ever and I just do a reimport and skip duplicates.  Sometimes it takes upwards of 5 times for those problematic files to be imported into LR just fine.

  • Epson R1800 Unable to Print Borderless 4x6

Maybe this is too simple a task for this printer, but after updating to the Snow Leopard drivers I can't get a borderless 4x6 out of the printer. It is printing with a border and cutting off the image. Should this be that difficult? I am using epson 4x6 photo stock. I tried printing a calibration sheet and it was useless as it was cut off like the photos.
Is this a hardware problem or is it just that difficult to print with Aperture? I seem to always have a problem with this program when it comes to printing.

    Hi again,
There is no difference between 2 x 3 and 4 x 6 -- it is the same crop, and when the driver and printer properly cooperate, it works perfectly from Aperture. Such is the case with my R1900. I hardly ever print from iPhoto, so I cannot say if there is a problem yet to be corrected with SL or not. There certainly is no problem printing from Photoshop, but I just don't like to do that with images that are archived in Aperture.
To get your full image printed borderless from any app, and not lose detain from the edge, you must be able to use the Expansion setting to minimize the expansion that the drivers otherwise provide to assure proper bleed over on the edge. In my one Epson that does not work properly from Aperture, it is clear that the Expansion function is inoperable, but when printing from Photoshop it is.

  • Older PSD and Tif files don't import

I know I have seen this on the forum, but I could not find it. I am importing all of my archives into Aperture. Some older PSD and Tiff files (pre 2000) just don't import. No warning. Just missing files. This is a bit scary as I can't go through all of the folders 1 by 1 to see what is missing. Is this a known bug....any work arounds. Thanks
    mac book, Dual 2gig G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Maybe. But, frankly, Aperture is not a PSD archiving and workflow appliation. It is a photographic workflow application. Adobe, by nature of having written Photoshop, probably has better support for old Photoshop formats than does Apple.
If you really need to import 40,000 PSD files into something, I would suggest Aperture is not the best tool for you. You want an asset manager or something that specializes in archiving/search. Aperture's raison d'etre is RAW photos, you know, that come from a camera.

Kudos to Jason Pugsley for the following (Powershot G2 data, but it works just fine and dandy for the Powershot S40!!!)
<<< Following copied from Jason's thread on the Powershot G2>>>
This camera is a bit old but if you want to import images in RAW format you can try this hack. Hopefully Apple will have official support soon.
I started with the settings for the already-supported G3. Feel free to modify the values if you've got any idea what they're for...

    Also note,
Powershot S40 CRW's I'd archived within Aperture rendered almost immediately (as did .DNG's based on them). But the RAW adjustment fine tuning did not appear in the Inspector/HUD.
(My assumption on the above is that Aperture initially identified them as non-RAW vs. unsupported, and therefore set a flag somewhere saying that RAW adjustments were not valid).
There is another thread on this for the Nikon D80, so I followed its solution ....
Export the masters, delete masters, re-import the masters!
    All works well!

  • Unsupport Image Type & Failing to recognise a Canon Camera

    I am a very worried person :-{
I have just finished aa wedding shoot, I used the Cannon 5D, 20d and 30D, 700 plus images, the cards are Sandisk Extreme III, various sizes, 4Gb, 2Gb and 1Gb. Photos are on the camera and can be viewed fine. I tried to import the cards one at a time into Apertiure 1.5 But from the 4Gb card there are about 50 photos that appear grey in the thumbnails, I select one and a really pixellated preview is seen, then it turns red saying unsupported image. So I archived the Aperture libabry, and deleted it. Restarted Aperture. aperture now failed to get past the loading screen, but eventually it now starts, but when I connect the 5D it does not see the camera anymore. Previous to this I never had a problem importing images.

    Hi there
Done all that, all updated to the hilt, I fear the library itself is somehow corrupted, I have had to go into the aperture libray through finder and retrieve all the images manually, they are fine, no problems with them in Adobe Bridge, it is only in Aperture that there is a problem. So as I said, no more Aperture for me, can't risk my business on flakey software. It is not the first time I have had problems with Aperture, I have lost images and revenue as a result. Thanks for everyone for offering their valuable help.

  • Ereasing Master Files - Very Slow Process, why?

    Hello there,
I usually edit my archive with Aperture. When I select a large amount of images and click erase versions & master files, it just takes a very very long time. So long, that you think the computer crashed. To erase 180 images, took at least 5 min!!
I have set up my Aperture Library on an external hardrive. I am wondering if this has to do with the problem I am encountering when I need to delete a large amount of images at once.
Any suggestions for a better and faster performance?

    hi, florian
for faster performance use a 7200rpm hard drive, firewire 800, with 16-32mb cache and keep a healthy amount of free space (headroom) on all your drives.
btw, just in case you are not aware if you use the Vault -- the Vault will make a folder with your deleted photos so you'll have to delete that too.

  • Best way to archive the final version of Aperture?

I'm not going to migrate to Photos, and I'm still running 3.4.5 on 10.7.5. I don't want to upgrade now, but I won't have a choice when I buy a new computer.
I want to have the final version of Aperture available to me when that happens. I'm moving to LR, but I still want access to my Aperture library.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks
    DLS

You first have to install it, then copy the installed version from the Applications folder to a backup drive.  Applications from the App Store are stand-alone versions. You can restore them by copying them back from a backup.  And if you upgraded to Aperture 3.6, the App Store should show it in your Purchases for downloading again, even if it will no longer be sold at the AppStore.
But before you can back it up, you need to install the upgrade. The update is only available from the AppStore, not from the downloads page, and the App Store will only show you the update, if you have a compatible MacOS X version installed.   You can only update to Aperture 3.6 from a Mac that is running Aperture 3.6.
Both Photos and iPhoto will be able to open your Aperture Library for browsing. But you would need iPhoto 9.6.1 and this update also requires a Mac running Yosemite.
There's no way to archive the app to disk? What happens if someone has a hard drive failure after they pull it from the App Store? Are they just out of luck?
I'm bot sure, if I understood your question correctly, DLS, but you an always restore Aperture from your Time Machine backup or bootable clone.
Only, you cannot download a version of Aperture, if your installed MacOS X is not compatible with that version.   To be able to archive Aperture 3.6 now, you need first a compatible system.

  • Problems importing Aperture 2 archived projects into Aperture 3

Any suggestions please I want to import some archived projects from aperture 2 back into Aperture 3 from an external dive the projects are in folders named xxxx.approject. Aperture 3 sees the folders but the images are contained in separate folders within so for a project that has 600 images in it imports them all in individual folders which is a complete nightmare to sort out. Am I doing something wrong here or is this the way Aperture 2 exported projects? Any help would be appreciated.

It should work. Just try it.
