Archiving messages in a POP account

[lion mail app]
if i archive messages in a POP account and then after the archive change the account to IMAP, will the new IMAP account upload the archive to the server?
trying to convert an old POP account with 1000's of messages to a more modern IMAP account due to use on multiable devices.
i don't want the archive to be uploaded to the IMAP server, as it would put 1000's of unwanted old emails on my iphone.
in other words lets just say that i only want messages from 2012 to be in the IMAP account and not all the messages from 2005-2011.

Hi,
Yes you can set the message box to pop up with various reasons.
Click onto CUSTOMIZE LOCAL LAYOUT button (Alt+F12)
and choose OPTIONS...
There is a MESSAGES frame, where you can select when you want the popup window.
REgards,

  • Restore 'Sent Messages' from deleted POP account

I deleted an old POP account, not realizing all my Sent Messages would be deleted as well. These sent messages were of great value. I'm not using Time Machine (will do now!).

I did too, I bought Boomerang Dada Revovery for OSX, but I still cannot find my old POP account. Any hints?

  • Applemail email sending only portion of written message (from a POP account)

Starting about 2 days ago my email (a POP mailbox from a Dreamhost account) began to send only portions of the emails I have been writing. I have no clue why... Already checked with Dreamhost and their end is good.

    Why not using ASP?
If on your webpage you have some buttons that runs at server, the server can create a web Client and using your IP address retrieved from the cession, communicate with your application (that will act as web Server).
then the web client on the web server can send request to your VB application and read a stream as response.
This web client being control by the buttons on the web page, gives you complete control over what and when the data is sent
This way you will have a complete control over the VB application from the web page.
I am not saying that the way you want to do it cannot work, ... but it seems more complicated

  • Messages from POP account not showing up in IMAP account folders

I've posted on this already, but I'm a little clearer about what the issue is, so I'm gonna try again.
I'm using Mac Mail. Recently my ISP assigned me an IMAP account. [Customer service says "we only use POP," but I can't get a POP account.] Messages in my mailboxes show up fine. I'm having difficulty with the mailboxes directly associated with the account---Inbox, Sent, Draft, etc.
I have only one Inbox. There are three Sent folders---the one that is always at the top of the sidebar, and two in an IMAP-specific set of folders. I coped the older messages from the POP account into what I thought were the corresponding folders of the IMAP account. Copied messages appear only in one of the IMAP Sent folders. However, when opened, they have no content. In some cases there is an indication that the content is "loading" but nothing ever appears.
Is it possible to get the older messages from the POP to show up with content in the IMAP folders? I gather from reading related threads from the archive that copying messages between account types should not be a problem, but it is for me.
    Thanks,

Well, I thought I found a solution in the archives here: Import the old messages from within Mail. Had no doubt that would work. Well, it didn't. Though all the old messages were Apple Mail messages, when I tried to import Mail said, "No valid Apple Mail files were found." Tried importing them as mbox files. Same result.
IMAP has advantages for people who check mail from more than one device, or for multiple users of an account. Not having been forwarned by AT&T that I was going to be switched from POP to IMAP, it has been a big headache for me. And it clutters up the sidebar with a changing collection of folders, including many that seem redundant, and some whose purpose I can't, in my ignorance, imagine.
Supposed to get a call today or tomorrow from a unit in AT&T that is "specially trained" to handle problems like mine. We'll see.
I sure would like to get help from somewhere.

  • Deleted messages in POP account not visible in Trash

Having a problem with deleting messages on my wife's iBook G4 (Tiger). For some reason there are 2 Trash sub-folders under the main Trash icon. One is labeled "On My Mac", and the other is labeled "POP Account".
Messages deleted from the Inbox go to the "POP Account" trash, but are not visible on the screen (clicking on the Trash icon in Mail). The deleted message can be found using finder: home/library/mail/[email protected]/Deleted Messages/Messages/name of deleted message (which is a 5 digit number followed by .emlx)
If I drag a message from the Inbox to the "On My Mac" trash folder, the message will be visible in that folder as well as when clicking on the main Trash icon.
I have set the mail account preference to erase deleted mail after one month, also selected Rebuild the mailbox with no effect on getting the deleted messages in the POP account to show.
Any suggestions on how to show the deleted messages in the Trash folder would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

For some reason there are 2 Trash sub-folders under the
main Trash icon. One is labeled "On My Mac", and the other
    is labeled "POP Account".
This is normal. The "On My Mac" named Trash mailbox is used when selecting a message for deletion that is located in any user created "On My Mac" mailbox.
The POP account's Trash mailbox may have some corruption. After confirming all existing messages marked for deletion that are located in the account's Trash mailbox can be deleted, quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this account named folder > Deleted Messages.mbox.
Delete the Deleted Messages.mbox folder and empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and a new Deleted Messages.mbox folder will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when selecting the next message for deletion that is located in any of the accounts' mailboxes - Inbox, Sent, etc.

  • Can I copy messages between a POP and an IMAP account?

Yesterday in helping me get access to my mail customer service at my ISP [AT&T] created a new account. Subsequently, when I deleted the old account, I lost all the messages in my Inbox and Sent folder. I did not realize when the new account was being created that it's an IMAP account. In the past AT&T mail accounts have been  POP accounts.
I have a Time Machine. I restored the /Library/Mail folder from a time immediately preceding creation of the new account. I thought I would simply copy the older Inbox and Sent folder into the new /Library/Mail folder. but I noticed that the IMAP and POP folders are structered differently. I have tried copying messages files from the POP account folders into the corresponding IMAP folders, but they still are not showing up in the Inbox and Sent folders.
Is there a way to solve this problem---to get the missing messages from the POP account to the IMAP account?
    Thanks,

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

  • Mac Mail POP Account Not Receiving Messages

Using Mac Mail, I am suddenly not receiving messages in a POP account. The gmail account I use is working normally. Under connection doctor both accounts are green. Help, please?

Same problem here since upgrading to Mail 7.1 (1827). All the settings are seemingly correct. The emails are marked as 'Read' on the server but are not downloaded.
The emails are also deleted a week later as set in preferences.
Thinking the emails may have gone elsewhere I used Spotlight to look for them. No success there.
Real puzzle and yet another glitch on the latest Apple Mail.
Come on Apple, get your act together.

  • Corrupted POP account crashing Mail in Leopard

Hello all. After a full day of triage yesterday, I found that a single POP account is crashing the Mail app every time it tries to retrieve new mail. None of the other POP or IMAP accounts have any trouble sending or receiving when tested separately.
I had current backups for everything, so now I'm looking for guidance to repair / replace the damaged POP account.
If I delete that account or simply trash that mbox, is there a way to re-import that mbox from the backup copy? Will it fix the problem, or is it likely that either there's a corrupted message in the existing, downloaded mail OR a corrupted message on the server that's causing the problem?
Also, If I delete the offending POP account, which contains thousands of archival emails, will importing from the backup mean I have to wade through years of old email again? Now the messages are distributed across their respective projects in sub-folders. I'd prefer to have the archival material stay where it is.
As you may be able to tell, I'm trying to fix this with a surgical strike. I've had no trouble with Mail until yesterday, so I'm hoping to fix the problem with this one account and not waste another entire day.
Thanks for any pointers on this one,
    Tim

"Very early in this topic I explain how to remove the old account folder, and then Import its mailboxes (after renaming a bit) to be On My Mailboxes accessible in the Sidebar. Once that is done, you can Move those messages back to any current account mailbox, such as Inbox or Sent. Was there something you did not understand about doing that?"
Unfortunately, I spent most of yesterday doing just that. I ended up not having all my email transfer - in some cases in was as few as 99 out of a 1,000 messages. The process seems imperfect, and it took a mixture of importing and re-importing mboxes and OS X Mail options in sequence to actually coax all the existing mail back.
"I suspect that the proper way to have proceeded was purging the com.apple.mail.plist all along. I can assure you from much experience that there are numerous instances where that is the real solution to such crashes, but you were reluctant to do that. I still would advise doing that, since corruption in any area we have discussed could result in a corruption of that plist file, and purging is often the only solution. Your test result with a New User Account is also an indicator of needing to purge and freshen the com.apple.mail.plist file."
My reluctance stems from prior nightmares trying to retrieve archival and current email after rebuilding com.apple.mail.plist files in earlier versions of Mail. My experience yesterday solidified that fear. If Apple had some retrieval / rebuild utility that matched the current numbers of messages from any given account (including draft, sent, inbox, etc.) and then came up with the same numbers of re-imported messages on the other end, I'd have a lot more confidence in the process. Instead, I went from 1,024 existing messages to 623 after re-creating the account.
Believe me, I'm very appreciative of your attention, but wiping out years worth of messages with very little expectation of ever getting the full complement back is daunting. I'm going to re-investigate Mail Steward and (one hopes) find a more stable way to archive important email outside the Mail app structure.
For now, I'll take your advice about dragging all the existing messages from the POP account and dragging them to their respective places in the new IMAP account. (I asked my most recent question because I've read elsewhere that dragging files from POP to IMAP accounts often results in incomplete transfers.)
I apologize if it seems I'm ungrateful and unwilling to take good advice. I've had more problems with Leopard than the past two iterations of OS X combined, and I'm annoyed by having to waste three full days trying to fix this 10.5.2 gremlin.
    Thanks again,
    Tim

  • Why don't my sent items sync to my iphone from mail "pop" account?

I have the same POP account on mail and my iphone and have itunes set to sync the account. it seems like the only folder that synched was the inbox. I want to be able to sync my account and have sent emails on both mail and my iphone. I send a lot of file attachments for work and it would be great to have the sent emails on my iphone in case I need to resend that attachment if I am not in the office provided I synched my iphone with my computer before I leave the office... any thoughts... I went down the IMAP road and the problem is the email server we are using online doesn't have enough storage to keep all the emails on the server.

Not possible with a POP account.
The email account sync process with iTunes syncs (or transfers) email account setup information for select accounts only from your computer to the iPhone. This does not not involve messages.
The reason the account's Inbox mailbox seemed to sync is because received messages with a POP account are the only server stored messages and if not removed from the server when downloaded by one email client can be downloaded from the server by another - in this case the iPhone.
If you want Sent messages kept synchronized between your computer's email client and the iPhone's email client, you MUST use an IMAP account for this purpose.

  • Missing Mail in POP account/ "Take account online in order to download it"?

    Mail build 1.3.11 (OSX.3.9)
User has an issue with mail showing the following error (see snip below) message in a POP account. Actually, if this were IMAP it would make sense, but I've not yet seen this on a POP configuration in this applciation. After running the rebuild on the Inbox, these emails are now gone. Is there any way to retrieve these emails?
    [snip]
The message from someone <[email protected]> concerning “Re:
paper” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this
account online in order to download it.
    [end-o-snip]
Many thanks for any insight provided.

This error message indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the mailbox has some corruption or is approaching or over the recommended size limit which is 1GB for Jaguar or Panther Mail.
If for the account's Inbox mailbox, quit Mail first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, a new (and empty) INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder. This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again and not risk losing any new received messages while working on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size of each here.
This information is required before determining the next step to take to recover the existing messages.

  • OOPS - POP account Deleted AND all local messages

Well, NOW I find out that when you delete your POP account from your MAIL preference, all the messages from that account go bye-bye. Guess I am too used to the IBM world and MS Office that hangs on to your messages even if the mail server account goes away.
SO, is there any magic pill I can give my Mac to recover/find all these messages?
The server account is GONE and there are no messages on any server. All I have is the knowledge that there were 600 INBOX messages waiting for archiving reaching back to 2005 that are no longer visible from my mail box, and knowing that the computer took a good amount of time to eliminate that mail account when it got deleted.
Any Doctors/pharmacists with a perscription out there? Thanks ! Jim K.

If the messages are not on the server and you don’t have a backup (which you should have made before doing something like that), you may try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.

  • Changed POP-account into IMAP: where are my old messages?

Few weeks ago, I created an IMAP-account (just bougt a MacBook).
Now it seems all POP-history has disappeared.
I named the IMAP-account, the same accountname as the POP-account before. I didnot backup or archive.
I checked ~/Library/Mail/, didnot find my old POP-folders, only new IMAP-folders.
I found the attats in the trash, but not the emlx's that were in my POP-folders. Are they hidden somewhere? Any way to restore these emlx's?
    Any suggestions very welcome.
    Har ©

    Hi BDAqua,
First, thanks for your quick reply. Had I been that fast...
I looked at the data-rescue software you recommended. It states that you don't have to be technical, however data recovery seems not my cup of tea. And then, me and my family used this Mac for another three weeks since, before I found out my old messages had disappeared. So if these files are not waiting in some folder, I guess it's a mess.
I think I'll take my loss of about one year of adresses, id's, passwords, confirmations etc. Luckely I found there was a lot of this saved in the attats and in keychain access as well.
Your remark about another HD made me realise that I'll need one anyway to backup my IMAP-boxes and keep out of things like this in future.
    Thanks

  • Archived POP account and email is gone

I archived a bunch of emails in a netzero account (POP) and now I can't find them. I was assuming that an "archive" folder would appear somewhere. It did not. When I tried it in my gmail account, it worked fine, but no luck with the netzero account.
If it's supposed to be on netzero's servers, that is of little use to me, as I have that set up to delete messages after they download to my computer. I did check; they are not on netzero's server either.
Any thoughts or help? Is there an undo? Should I be looking for the archive folder in finder, or should it appear in my mail someplace?
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, at moment there is no way to create a folder in a POP account. I know, bummer. I hope they add it at sometime.
Best way to store on phone for long term is to forward it to yourself thus it gets put in SENT items (which is fully stored on phone as opposed to just headers). It is how I keep some documents (like my resume) ready to send at any time.

  • I cannot delete mail from my inbox and get a message saying (msg) could not be moved to the mailbox trash-POP account".

I suddenly cannot delete mail from my inbox and get a message saying " (msg) could not be moved to the mailbox trash-POP account".  It does not matter if I am trying to delete a single message or mulitiple messages.  Can anyone help?

If you're running Leopard, as your profile says, then you need to post your question in that forum, not the Snow Leopard forums. So if you're really running Snow Leopard, you need to update your profile to show that, as well as give more details about what kind of mail accounts you have, and who your email provider is.

  • Can't send messages using pop account

    Hello,
I can’t send mail with some of my pop accounts using mail app. I have a .mac and a Yahoo account both work perfect. The other POP accounts don’t send. I get an error that says, “Cannot send message using the Server xxxxxxx” I check the setting and they are fine. It stop working a couple of days ago. I didn’t make any changes on the accounts settings.

I had the same problem until I called Earthlink support – it's your ISP's problem not yours. They will help you open a new POP account and set a new port (in the advanced option in preferences) to authorize your ability to send mail. I have no idea whether Yahoo is as helpful as Earthlink. They may not be because they're free.
