Archiving old photos and iPhoto 9.5

So,
The newest version of iPhoto has not only dropped the ability to burn old photos to CD and DVD, it's stopped supporting reading libraries that are set read-only.
Even worse, even if you do use the iPhoto Library Ugrader to convert a backup DVD to modern format, when you open in it in iPhoto, iPhoto will promply try to sync it to your iPad, your iPhone, PhotoStream and everything else.
SO HOW THE HECK AM I SUPPOSED TO ARCHIVE OLD PHOTOS?!?
This is ridiculous. Does anyone have any idea for a good process for archiving old photos in a way that they can still be accessed without worrying about them being "contaminated" with stuff from your photostream or other current sources?

You archive old libraries to HD's. Turn off Photostream, FB et al and nothing will be "infected".
You might be able to use an app like Keyboard Maestro to automate the upgrade procedure.
My sole contribution to the thread prior to your sarcasm. It offers two solutions to your queries. No argument. I blamed you for nothing, I simply explained the problem you have and indeed offered a solution. Nowhere do I say that anything is your wife's fault, so the notion that I blamed her for anything is twaddle. You're the one that mentioned it.
I said nothign about exporting photos at all, and the solution I suggested woud preserve all the tags, descriptions and ratings. But then, if you weren't so busy being sacastic to people who are trying to help you, you might read what I said again:
The solution to your iPhoto problem is simple: Copy all the Libraries to a HD. Upgrade them. Merge them into one. Turn off any features you don't want. Have a robust back up system in place.
Export? Lose metadata? Not if you do it right.

What is the best way to scan and sort old photos in iPhoto?  They do not have digital dates.

    Hey Chicago Sue,
Once you scan them and have them on your desktop. You should use Automator and assign the common IPTC tags to the images, so that when you do import them into iPhoto, they get recorded.
Here is an example of an action in Automator:

  • Archiving old photos

I need some help. My iPhoto library is huge. It contains about 10k photos and goes back to 2004. I don't need those photos on the computer anymore, but I'd like to save them. What is my option for archiving old photos?
I'd like to keep 2010-2011 active and in iPhoto, but the rest can be exported or stored elsewhere. They're going to be big, as I am a photographer, so the filesizes are quite large. I'm not sure DVD's is the best route, maybe an external HDD? If so, how do I get them out of iPhoto and onto the HDD. And then once they're there, then how would I see them in the future (do i have to re-import back into iPhoto or can i just look at the photos organized by folders or something)?
I'd love to get some idea on best practices here or what I should do. thanks!

10k? iPhoto is good for 250,000 images, so you've got some room to go yet.
Best option for archiving? Move them to an external HD.
Here's one way to do what you want:
    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    3. On the Internal Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
    A couple of comments:
    a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.

    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    Also,
    - If you used PhotoStream then try getting them from your PhotoStream. See that topic of:

  • Is there anyway to archive old queries and workbooks rather than deleting?

Our environment has thousands of old queries and workbooks.  We plan to delete any object that has not been used within 13 months, but there's a concern we may someday need a few of the reports that will be deleted.
Is there a way to archive old queries and workbooks rather than deleting them?
Is there another approach to solving this matter?
    Thanks!

    Jim
This is really a intersting question as this is a reality as many BW reports are not used/accessed by users but still they have tendancies of sitting on these reports.
I wanted to suggest to carry-out report usabilty analys. This analysis u can carry out by using BW statistics/standerd queries/new queries in technical cubes showing usability data. If u found that a perticalar BW report is not been used for long time, u can discuss the usability of this report with the report user ( as it is a normal practice of owning BW report by user/user group across industry ), if user is no longer uses it Or do not need it any more, it will be better to delete those reports, this will free up some resources and will reduce the junk. ( if user wants these queries ask him to use it or it will better to personalise report in his desktop easing him to see those reports. )
Changing the technical names of the query as suggested by Bhanu will have follwing effects.
    1. It will add more reports in repository leading to junk
    2. Old queries still be assigned to user roles, so collide with user authorisation.
hope views are clear, others are welcome to add or share their experince in this regard.
kindly assign the points if it helps.

  • Removing old photos from iPhoto to external HD but not the library

Hi I have just purchased a new external HD.  I already have one which is used with Time Machine for backing up my mac.  My problem is the mac HD is not that big and my extrenal with time machine is also getting full and after reading around I discovered that it will start to erase old backups to replace with new ones.  My problem with this is that I have used Time MAchine as a way of storing home movies and films exteranally as they take up to much space and therefore are no longer on the mac itself.  I bought a new disk so that rather than being a backup i can simply store files there and when needed plug it in if i want to use them ie videos old photos etc.
I currently have smart albums set up in iPhoto for each year so photos automatically drop into these depending on when they were taken.
I would like to move the older albums straight to an external and delete from my mac.  How do I go about this as deleting the smart folder wont delete the originals and can I drag a smart folder to an external drive?  If not how do I find photos taken by year move them across to the external and delete the original.
    Thanks

    Hello there MrCoates14,
You are correct, deleting the photos from the Smart Album will not remove the originals from the computer, and based on what else you want to do with iPhoto, heres what I recommend.
First you can export the photos in the Smart Album to an external drive, as outlined in this article iPhoto '11: Export a photo found here http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2438. Note: At step 1, you want to highlight ALL the photos in the album, not just 1.
    To export photos:
Select the photo or photos you want to export.
    Choose File > Export.
At the top of the Export Photos window, click the File Export button.
To specify the file type for the exported photo, choose an option from the Kind pop-up menu:Original: Exports the photo as it was originally imported into iPhoto, before editing.Current: Exports the photo in its current format. If you imported a RAW-format photo and then edited it in iPhoto, the photo is exported as a JPEG file.JPEG: If you choose this format, choose an option from the JPEG Quality pop-up menu. The higher the quality, the bigger the photo. For example, if the photo will be used on a website where optimal quality for printing isn’t required, you could choose Low to save storage space on the website.TIFF: A lossless file format that works well for transferring photos between computers and applications.PNG: Another lossless file format popular for web images.
To change the size (resolution), choose an option from the Size pop-up menu:
For photos to be emailed or mainly viewed onscreen, these settings compress the photos (making them smaller):
Small: Use for photos you email or publish to websites where you don’t expect anyone to download and print your photos.
Medium: Use when you or your recipients have a reasonably fast Internet connection, such as DSL. This setting is not suitable for making prints.
Large: Use this setting when you and your recipients have a very fast connection. This size can be used to print small to standard-size photos (2 by 3, 3 by 5, and 4 by 6 inches).
For photos to be printed or published for download, these settings provide maximum detail for final prints:
Optimized: Use for larger prints and for publishing photos to websites for others to download and print. With this setting, photos are slightly compressed to a smaller file size so that they download faster without compromising quality.
Actual Size/Full Size: Use to make high-quality prints in small to large sizes, or to upload photos to websites so that others can download and print them. This setting matches the actual size of your photo, so it may take longer to upload or download.
Specify your other options:Include checkboxes: If you choose JPEG or TIFF from the Kind pop-up menu, you can include titles, keywords, and location information with the exported photos by selecting the checkboxes.File Name: Choose whether to export photos in sequence, or by their filenames, iPhoto titles, or album name.Prefix for sequential: If you choose Sequential from the File Name pop-up menu, you can specify text to appear before each number (for example, Birthday01, Birthday02, and so on). This step is optional.
    Click Export.
Choose where to save the exported photo files, and then click OK.
Then when they are all exported you can Create a New Event from the photos in each album to group them all together in Events, so that when you delete the new event with all the photos in the album in it, they will be deleted from the library. Here is the article for that named iPhoto '11: Create a new Event found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2364.
You also have the option to iPhoto '11: Move your iPhoto library to a new location if you just want to move the entire library to the external drive and use the library from the drive directly: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2506
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Photostream is syncing old photos from iPhoto

Photostream is syncing 1000 of random old photos throughout my iPhoto library.  Because it is grabbing these 1000 photos it does not sync NEW pictures taken.  It supposed to sync the last 30 days pictures, but these pictures are from 2006-2008.  All photos are labeled correctly with the right time and date. I have resetted photostream from iCloud.   Whats the deal??  Am I the only person that is having this problem?!?!   Any possible solution is GREATLY appreciated.

You can sync any photo(s) that are in iPhoto to Photostream.  Just click on the photos that you want and click the share button in the lower right of the screen.  There's an option there to share with Photostream.  You need iPhoto '11 and you need to have Photostream enabled in preferences and make sure the "Automatic Upload" option is checked.
    Hope that helps.

  • Printing old photos from IPhoto

Hello!  I'm trying to print some old photos to create a printed photo album. I have all the photos in IPhoto and they are all .jpg.  However when I click on some of them an exclamation mark comes up and I can't transfer them to a memory stick.  I'd be very grateful for any advice - what can I do?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Deleting old photos makes iPhoto go wonky

When I try to delete a photo that I've had in iPhoto for many years, the program freezes a bit, leaving the thumbnail. When I then try to import a touched-up version (saved as a jpg), iPhoto freezes altogether. I must go to Force Quit.
The deleted version never appears in the trash, but if I click on the still-present thumbnail, no photo shows. These are photos that I put in the first version of iPhoto, and have simply upgraded my OS and iPhoto over the years.
I did try reinstalling the library from my backup, but when completed, the same thing happened a second time.
(Is this a new problem with iPhoto 09 and photoshopped jpegs?)
So, at present my iPhoto will not import any photos that I touch up in photoshop, nor will it correctly delete these photos. This is a NEW problem. I have imported and deleted touched-up jpegs for years.
    Latest OS and latest iPhoto
    Help.

Why are you importing photos touched up in Photoshop?
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Other than that it sounds very like you have a damaged database file:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Photo and iPhoto Library

For years I have used a single iPhoto library (with backups) on an EHD. I understand that I can now choose that library for the new Photo app when opening Photo. However I will (for now) keep iPhoto available within my apps. Can I switch between the two photo apps for either app (using the "option" keystroke) using the same library? And when "Photo" app becomes my "go-to" choice can I freely back up that designated library instead of the original iPhoto library? If so, what will happen to my original iPhoto library within my backups? Would I need two separate backups? As you can see I'm trying to keep from having a problem before it occurs! Thanks for your help.

Do you mean that I will have two physically separate libraries?
    Yes.
Then backing up each requires separate EHD partitions?
I truly have no idea why you would think that. You have two items. You back them both up. I don't get why you would think it involves partitioning.
Or when I'm ready to use the original iPhoto library as the Photos app. library, can I back up the old iPhoto, now the same but new Photos library over the original iPhoto library backup, renamed Photos?
    Let's try this again.
You have an iPhoto Library. You launch Photos. It sees your iPhoto Library and offers to make a Photos library based on it. You say yes. It does this.
Now you have two apps and two libraries. Launch iphoto and it works on the iPhoto Library. Launch Photos and it works on the Photos one. There is no connection now between the two apps and the two libraries.
Because the two objects are different with different names, they don't overwrite each other.

How can I upload old pictures in Iphoto on my MAC to Icloud

If you are using iPhoto 11...
Highlight the photo (s) you want to add to a stream and then click "add to" at the bottom right and select iCloud.
This will then give you the option to add them to an exisitng stream or create a new one.
