Archiving on Blue-ray.. what are the issues that people are afraid of..?

I'm considering how my latest storage monster toy (Hi definition camcorder) is going to eat disk space and realise that very very soon I'm going to want to move archived projects onto some external media that isn't going to consume that spare room in my house.
I dislike the idea of using a ton of external USB disks for the reasons above and the environmental factors associated with those disks and tape drives.. well it gets kinda expensive real quick when you start to look at current models and limited lifecycles that tape drives have before they need replacing.
My thoughts are that Blue-Ray is the sweet spot at the moment but I have heard people on this forum saying that the life of the media is questionable and comparable to various DVD media types.
I did a little digging and found that Archive quality non-organic BD-Rs that use a SiCu substrate approximate the UDO disk format that is traditionally used by large organisations for archival storage.
The UDO format has a life of approximately 100 years and some BD-R vendors are certifying their media for ~50 years. (cost about £25 for dual layer 50Gb today).
The recording technology on the media is radically different to various recordable DVD technologies that typically use an organic dye that is subject to deterioriation over time.
My thoughts are that BD-R will see most consumers out until the next generation of technologies (Protein Coated Disks and Holographic Disks) start to become mainstream and in the meantime we have some significant advantages over the tape guys such as size, random access and costs (being driven down all the time by consumer uptake).
So, what have I missed? Are there additional factors or are people only nervous because of FUD..?

  • What is the app that people use to chat inside of terminal?

Forgive me for my newbie question.
I always saw people use their terminal for chatting and listening to music in screenshot, what are those applications?
Is it an equivalence to pidgin?

I was playing around with centerim when I still used Kubuntu. If I recall correctly it supports all the popular protocol; I used Gtalk of Gmail which is same as Jabber, so I can assure you that at least
that one works. It was quite cool especially using it with Yakuake. But I guess that Kopete was better as it notified you about how came online and such...
But now with Kopete again not working I use Pidgin witch unfortunately sometimes crashes plasma, so I'm starting to think that it's time to try centerim again.

  • What Blu-Ray Burners are compatible with Mac?

Any suggestions on what type of external blu-ray players are compatible with the iMacs?

Same Samsung SH-B123L Blu-Ray player has worked for me in Windows 7, Lion, and Mountain Lion. So, if you had this connected and dual-booted using Boot Camp, it would be a one device solution. Use MacGo Blu-Ray software. The player is a powered USB connection. OS X DVD player also thinks it is an internal Apple device and just works without a whimper. Fast device. 16x DVD burn. 48x read. Take it out of the box and plug it in. The operating system just recognizes it.
If you point the MacGo Blu-ray software at movies stored in your local network, it will play them too.

Hi I have just got back from the apple store and the guy at the Genius bar looked at it and said it was a manufacturing fault, and because it has been like it since new, and seemed to be getting worse he replaced the computer  and I have a new warranty from today.
We got the feeling as soon as he looked at it that he has seen this before, I did say to him I was concerned it would be a replacement screen and I was not really happy about that as it was so new, and he said that was the normal procedure, but as the fault was already there at new and it was getting worse they would replace. I could not have asked for a better service.
Not unpacked this one yet but am hoping all is good, its a great little machine.
Thank you for your responses, and I hope this might help someone else.  One thing it did not seem to be missing pixels but something to do with the screen production?

To give you something, I need something too, like
How old is the Ipod? (if it is still under warranty, then send it to Apple service shop)
Are you running Windows iTunes or Mac iTunes?
What do you see on the iPod screen?
My guess is, your iPod classic is more than 2 years old and out of warranty, and the hardisk has gone kaput! and need to be replaced.
    Have a nice day!

  • LGBD390 blu-ray cannot find the access point of WRT160N/3.

I have been trying to set up the wireless connection to be able to view streamed movies from netflix through my LGBD390 blu-ray player.  I have successfully connected the wireless router to my Embarq router.  When I check status, it says it is enabled and connection is o.k.  I have been on the phone with Linksys (and was charged $9.99 which did not solve my problem).  I also have chatted and so far that has not worked either.  I have downloaded the upgrade for the firmware.  No matter what I do, the blu-ray cannot find the access point of the router.
    Can you help?

thank you for your responsse Wizzard, but there are things I need to change that I don't know how to do.  I have no idea  how to assign static ip, subnet and gateway on the blu-ray.  When I went to the link , it was actually for  adifferent router than mine.  I have a WRT160N/v3.  I also did not know what to put in the protocol.  and if I should just put the number in the beg. and ending.   I also don't think I have an ethernet adapter.  Maybe you could give me more information.  Thanks in advance.

  • Blu-ray Has Won The War

Now that Toshiba has given up on HD-DVD, I wonder what will happen to Blu-ray prices. They have to get cheaper for Blu-ray to become popular, but without competition, it may be awhile. Anyway, at some point, FCX users will finally have a way to output our HD content.

"The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) recently reported that sell-in indicators for Blu-ray products are proving more positive than even the most optimistic sales forecasts and market analyst reports.
"We have good reason to predict that this Q4 sales period will see the Blu-ray Disc revolution take hold in US mainstream markets and we will witness strong sales performance in every other geographical region," commented Victor Matsuda, Chairman of the BDA Global Promotions Committee.
"The 30 September release of Iron Man is another good example of Blu-ray's growing impact on movie releases. In the U.S., for the week commencing 29 September, the BD release of Iron Man is the best-selling movie of all packaged media (including DVD) on Amazon.com."
"At the IFA exhibition in Berlin last month, renowned media industry analyst Jim Bottoms (from Futuresource Consulting) predicted that in the US, Blu-ray Disc would end 2008 in an unassailable position as the next gen home entertainment packaged media format."

  • CS3 "Come for the blue-ray stay for the flash" crashing (MY SOLUTION)

    Hello everybody,
I had some serious trouble starting up Encore CS3 in WinXP. Seeing the "Come for the blue-ray stay for the flash" -message and then Encore CS3 closing up. As for someone else in the forums, starting Adobe Version Cue before trying to start Encore solved the problem.
Now a year later, I faced the same problem with Vista 64bit and with totally different hardware. For many people unplugging certain USB-drives or devices has solved the problem, but for me it didn´t help, neither in XP nor Vista. I remembered the solution from XP and started up Adobe Bridge CS3, then chose "Version Cue" -> "Start server". This action opens up a browser and asks for server information. I inserted nothing, tried to start Encore CS3 and it worked!
Hope my experiences will help some of you who are struggling with the same problem.

OMG, thanks so much for this solution... I have searched high and low for a solution, and I have also tried reinstalling countless times.  My only question is do you have to start that server every time you start up encore?  Also do you know what is causing this to happen that you need to start the server?

I purchased Adobe Pro XI last February. I have tried to reinstall it and I keep getting the message that I have a valid serial # but no qualifying product. What is the issue?

    Hey robertb86490977,
The reason why you are getting this prompt is because you are trying to install an upgrade version.
During the upgrade, you will need to enter serial number twice.
The first time, you need to enter the serial number of the actual product that you have purchased.
The second time, you need to enter serial number for the previous version that you had.
So, please enter serial number of the previous version at the second prompt.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
    Regards,
    Anubha

  • Macbook pro 2011 has faint green light. won't turn on. what is the issue?

I've had this problem twice and both times I've gone to the genius bar they've plugged it in and pressed a few buttons and it's working fine. It's a 2011 macbook pro 13 inch. Has a faint green and flickering orange light on the charger. I've tried resetting the SMC and the basic troubleshooting steps. I'm tired of going to the genius bar for a 5 minute fix. I can't turn it back on after it suddenly shuts off. Power button is not responding. It was updated and working fine. Im a student and can't afford to have this problem every week. What is the issue?

Just face facts - if water (or any other liquid) reached you logic board or any other electronic components, you're going to be the victim of corrosion.
Eventually, you'll need to have the logic board replaced. There are liquid sensors all over your MBP and the techs can tell if these have been activated. I wouldn't turn the computer on at all - if it were me, I would take it to your local Apple Store/AASP and get an estimate for repair. Rice & other desiccates may 'dry up' the liquid, but it won't undo the damage already done.

  • HT201335 when using apple tv with my ipad, the mirroring function does not work, screen goes black, what is the issue?

when using apple tv with my ipad, the mirroring function does not work, screen goes black, what is the issue?  My son's Ipad(same as kind as mine) works ok with the apple tv but mine does not.  Any suggestions?

    Hello Nina Izurin,
While written for the iPhone, the troubleshooting below can help resolve issues with your iPad's camera, as well.
Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
Try to remain steady while focusing:
Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.
Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?
