Archiving options for HDV from tape

Would appreciate some advice please
I have many hours of HDV on tape from my Sony HC3. 1080i format.
When I import directly into FCPx using a firewire 800 connection, the files are 1440x1080 according to the inspector in Quicktime.. 34 minutes consumed about 9 GB. No problem
When I alternatively import using a Blackmagic H.264 Prorecorder, and source the HDMI output from the camera, I am recording files at 1920x1080 according to the inspector in Quicktime, yet the files look to be the same dimension...! 34 minutes, consumed 5.3 GB
I cant see much difference in detail at all, and the Blackmagic files to H264 look more contrasty and pleasing
Given that I am not trying to extract flat files from granding from this source (they wont tolerate much change anyway before they fall apart) I wonder whether I am better archiving the files imported directly to FCPx or the H264 out the HDMI. I dont really care about the storage space (I have plenty)
Would appreciate feedback from anyone who has genuine expertise in this area
Paul

Aaron would you mind to share your findings on this if any! We are in the same situation as you were.
I have activated Online Archiving (on-premises) feature for 3 accounts on our Exchange 2010 and set them up with Retention Policy which Move to archive items aged more than 6 months and all works fine and old Items automatically being moved to Online Archive
mailbox which just appeared after enabling this on server for above 3 accounts.
The server is Exchange 2010 and clients are Outlook H&B 2013 which comes with DELL systems.
We already purchased Enterprise Licenses as well and have access to Microsoft Download pages to get Outlook 2013.
But since above is working just fine, we really would like to know, if we don't install Outlook 2013 and activate it with that license what in fact we are missing in terms of functionalities regarding Online Archiving!
Really looking forward to hear back from you or anybody who can clear the confusion.
Thanks for assistance!

  • Archiving options for Outlook 2010/2013 Home and Business?

    Hi all,
Forgive me if this is covered already (I am sure it would be somewhere but I could not find a definitive answer).  We are looking at migrating from Google Apps to Exchange and I am trying to cost it all up and have a question in relation to archiving.
Our 450 users are not akin to archiving, given their gmail limits, they are just used to keeping everything, however with exchange that will have to change as we are going to host it locally.
The question I have is what archiving options are available to me given that all our office installations are Home and Business 2010/2013?  I have read the compatibility matrix which says outlook in this product does not support in-place archiving.
To test this I created an in-place archive for my account (outlook 2010 H&B) and when I re-open outlook I get my archive mailbox showing up.
I have not yet tested the mailbox retention policies and such like but I thought I would just ask as to what options would be available to me given this situation?
Given that my archive is now showing in outlook, what has caused that to happen? I would have thought that if it was not supported that it would not have shown up at all?  Can someone explain what functionality will not work and what will?
If we have to buy new copies of outlook for all our clients it just adds to the cost that I suspect will kill the move and management will say that we can stay on gmail.
Thanks for any direction you may have.

  • HT1281 Where do I find the "Archive" option for Time Capsule disk in AirPort Utility

HT1281 is exactly about what I am trying to do, but AirPort Utility does not look like this on my Mac (Lion). Where do I find the "Archive" option mentioned here?

Where do I find the "Archive" option mentioned here?
Apple left this out (along with a number of other features and functions) in the new "upgraded" AirPort Utility.
Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion , which offers far more functionality. This version was introduced on the same day as AirPort Utility 6.0, but apparently many users missed it.
You can keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac and use the one that you want.

  • Archiving Options for BPEL Instances, Comments and Attachments.

    Hi
We have a SOA11g BPEL and Human Tasks custom application running for past one and half year, and we have lot of instances completed in the BPEL flow.
Are they any default options in SOA Suite where the instances get archived after specific period? If not what are the options to archive the Completed instance and respective Comments and Attachments. And to view them when required from the BPM worklist application.

    Hi,
This somewhat date back to the way iChat's Saved Chats were once Stored.
At iChat 5 (in Snow Leopard) you could choose to see the last chat - (when opening an new chat with a person you had chatted with before) or parts of the Last Chat in terms of the Last so many IMs.
Example Pic of iChat 5's Prefs
Since then the management choices of the Save Chats has changed in both iChat 6 and Messages.
Messages stores Chats two ways if they are iMessages.
You can elect to Save them in Messages > Preferences > Messages.
It also store the chat.db and other databases items which includes the Attachment items
The chat.db is the bit that fill in the "history" if you iMessage the same person even if you are not saving the Chat in a formal sense in the App's Preferences.
This is irrespective if your delete the Conversation from the Messages main window.
How big these Databases get obviously depends on your iMessages usage.
Striker's link seems to be about a similar issue on an iPhone (I presume it transfers to other iOS devices) but I am not sure that it is relevant in this situation.
    Edit.
I should have been clear that you cannot change the database behaviour.

  • Options for Upgrade from OSX 10.4 to Leopard

Hi all, I started this question over here:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2592383&tstart=0
and BDAqua recommended I start a new thread, so here goes:
My computer has been crazy slow for the last year or two. I have a MacBook with Mac OS X (10.4.11). We've think we want to reinstall the OS, I don't have the original install disks.
BAqua recommended paying the $29 for the Leopard upgrade, but I noticed here http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html that it says I need to get the full product since I'm on OSX 10.4 - is that true?. Here's what it says on the bottom right:
Upgrading from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger.
If your Intel-based Mac is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, purchase the Mac Box Set, which is a single, affordable package that includes Mac OS X v10.6.3 Snow Leopard; iLife, with the latest versions of iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and iDVD; and iWork, Apple’s productivity suite for home and office including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.
I'm not sure it's worth $169 to upgrade the OS - especially considering we don't even know if it's a hardware problem.
Also, can I do a complete reinstall with the upgrade disk anyways? My husband has worked on PCs for a long time, but wasn't sure what to do about a Mac that has what appears to be a lot of corrupted settings. He tried to create a new user and copy the setting over (seems like common advice on these forums), but my computer hangs forever when trying to create a new user. He figures it's faster to just reinstall than try and fix it one problem at a time. Thoughts?
    Thanks so much!

There have been reports from users who have bought the $29. package
and used it to install a newer Snow Leopard 10.6.x system in a supported
Mac computer model that was capable of using that version.
Snow Leopard 10.6 is the current production version; Leopard 10.5 is not.
With enough free space (capacity, unused) on the computer's hard disk
drive, a new system could be installed; an Upgrade & Install, if you had
a newer retail install DVD. But too full of a hard disk drive, and it won't
work; neither would an Archive & Install, where you choose to have the
new system save and use the old user account & setup info. If the Mac
has too much stuff on the hard disk drive, it has to be dealt with first.
And the computer system itself is separate from the user acct issues.
    The 10.6 upgrade is a full installer, according to those who have used it;
but the better deal would be to get the large 'complete package deal' due
to the addition of the other software, each in a retail package version, to
add those other apps that the upgrade installer by itself won't include.
And the older Tiger-level versions are fairly outdated to try and use in the
Mac once you've upgraded the OS from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard 10.6.x.
Usual issues as you describe that are affecting your computer use, tend
to be related to a few factors; issues contributing to slowness and sluggish
performance, include: a too-full hard disk drive, in adequate RAM installed
to run certain Apps. And a combination of a fuller than desired hard disk
drive plus inadequate available RAM installed, can make a system slow.
RAM is on-chip random access memory; HDD capacity is storage space.
Not to confuse these; however the computer will use larger sections of free
hard disk drive space. Unused capacity, used as Virtual Memory helps the
Mac OS X system and Apps you may be using, handle the workload and
temp files, swap space, Virtual Memory and other workings, are comprom-
ised by a lack of sufficient free or unused hard disk drive capacity.
Also, in addition to the above, certain cache files in the system, and other
items addressed by routine and preventative maintenance, can grow to a
point where they can slow the system. So, trying to install an upgrade over
a problem not directly related to the system, only will layer the first problem.
The symptoms you describe indicate the problem is probably due to the
hard drive being near full capacity; or perhaps it has bad sectors and a
part of the hard disk drive is not longer accessible to the Mac OS X, so the
    computer is working around the lack of space needed as Virtual Memory;
and has gotten way slow in trying to find temporary work space, under load.
IF the internal drive in the computer is more than 75 to 85% full, it likely is
overdue for some clearing out; image files, music files, libraries of these
can use up plenty of hard disk drive storage capacity. So much, the Mac
may start to work very hard, and then the usual thing is hard drive failure.
So, you should consider using an external drive enclosure that can boot
the computer model you have (some can't.) If your Mac has USB 2.0
ports, and FireWire400/800, then an external enclosure sporting both
kinds of ports (FW + USB2.0) with its own power supply; and making a
complete computer drive clone, on the external drive.
Once a suitable and boot-capable copy/clone is created on an external
hard disk drive, and it is tested to see it can start and run the Mac, you
could choose to use Disk Utility from the clone's utility folder, and have
it 'repair disk permissions' on the booted clone. Then, it may be OK to
secure erase (one-pass) the hard disk drive, using Disk Utility's optional
tools, and choose a partition map (GUID-type) and reformat to HFS+.
Then, the system which was cloned to the external drive could be re-
cloned back to the internal hard disk drive. The same Clone utility can
be used to move or copy an OS X system back & forth. One that I use
is a free-running donationware/download, named Carbon Copy Cloner.
Since the computer have/had shipped with a special version of Tiger
10.4, (Intel-based Macs with Tiger) this would not be able to use a
retail copy of the Tiger DVD to do a re-install. You could call Apple
Sales/Support, and tell them the Serial Number of your Mac, and ask
about getting a replacement original software packet for your computer.
This would cost a nominal fee; or go for the $29. Snow Leopard one.
The product specialist you'd talk to about this, at 1-800-MY-APPLE
may be able to direct you somewhat, if the original Tiger 10.4 replace-
ment disc set is no longer available for your computer.
A concern, would be if you were somehow able to install an upgrade to
a later system into your computer, as it is now (with issues) the problem
could be worse, since a too-full hard disk drive can be damaged or be
a cause of software/data loss once you over-fill the drive.
Also, a portable computer, among others that see a lot of use, may need
a new/replacement hard disk drive by now; after three to five years run-
time. They do wear out, and the more they have to work to do read/write
cycles of use, such as when inadequate chip RAM is installed, to swap
files and use HDD free space as Virtual Memory, things wear out faster.
So, the system itself isn't likely the cause of the problem; but is a symptom.
And you need to have some system discs. The replacement of original discs
would give you the correct Apple Hardware Test it shipped with; this is not
on any other version OS X install disc. And the original disc set should be
included with a computer when it is sold, traded, or gifted away. Plus, any
other OS X version it may have been upgraded with. To cover all bases.
Perhaps someone else has a shorter version of this line of thinking, with a
few good web links to helpful sites? I have fielded three local interruptions
not related to computers while trying to write what I thought was a simple
reply to a question; but find it is easier to know the answer than get it out.

  • One step Option for HDV

iDVD won't do a one-step video from HDV, so I'm looking for the next quickest way to get a DVD burned from a tape. Sometimes this will be done in the car ride back from the game I just taped.
A second, related question: is the disk image created by iDVD usable by other software, including Windows? I need to create a half dozen copies between friday night and Saturday morning on a High School football budget (i.e., no multi-disk duplicators in our near future...)
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Mish:
    Thanks for this.
Don't care about including photos or videos in these
menus, and even with no content added, processing the
menus can take 10s of minutes. I don't know why you
would forego creating a simple menu with a nice picture
and a title saying "The Game". It looks much better than an
autoplay and certainly doesn't take more than 5 min. to encode.
I have been playing with some of the old simple (static) themes and the have much faster encoding times, so I could create a template with a standard picture and text and place the new video in that. But it’s of near zero value since these DVDs will only be used to review the game with the players, and going through the menu to see the nice picture will be more of an annoyance than an appreciated graphic feature. Hadn’t thought of doing an autoplay, which actually makes a lot of sense.
Would the disk image be compatible with any
standard Windows utility? No. You'll need to
convert the .img file to ISO in order to burn it on a PC. Here's how:
    http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/macsupport/mache lp/pages/0015-burnidvd-faq/idvd_hackfaq.html#3
    Thanks!
On the other hand, you'll probably need to burn
the file onto a DVD for transferring to the PC, meaning
you could simply opt for burning the (video) DVD
then make copies on any other machine.
.... burn slow and use quality media
    hope this helps
    Yes, definitely. Thanks

  • Best option for upgrading from 3g to 4g.  Amazon yes or no?

I currently have 2 smartphones on a 3g unlimited plan, a Samsung Fascinate and a Droid X.  I want to get a Galaxy S3 and Droid DNA to replace them.  I've seen both phones on Amazon for 30 and 50 bucks respectively when upgrading.
What's my best option here?  I understand that you can grandfather a 3g unlimited to 4g unlimited but only if you buy the new phone for Full price from Verizon.  If I were to switch to a tiered plan, should I change the plan first, then buy the Amazon phones?  Or would that incur extra charges and more plan changes?  Any known caveats/problems for using Amazon to upgrade the phone?

Yes, you CAN keep that unlimited data plan even if you move to 4G.
Here's a good article to read:
    http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2320134
They advise you to do it in the store. Don't finalize anything until you are CERTAIN they've done it right and you still have your unlimited plan.

  • Replacement iMac hard drive not an option for "restore from backup"

Got my iMac back from Apple today with a new hard drive following a hardware failure. Unfortunately, I cannot restore from Time Machine as the internal drive is not listed as a choice for "Destination". My Firewire drives are visible but the internal drive is not. It wasn't visible at the initial attempt to restore when the drive was under factor fresh OS installation, it wasn't visible after partitioning the drive, and it wasn't visible after repartioning into a single partition. Any advice or ideas/explanations?

In your "Applications" -> "Utilities" folder you'll find a utility named "Migration Assistant".
Migration Assistant was originally created for Mac owners who buy a new Mac and want to migrate all their data over to the new machine. But it turns out this is exactly what you do when you do a full restore from a Time Machine backup to a new/empty disk.
As a result, Migration Assistant was updated since they came out with Time Machine so that one of the options is "From a Time Machine Backup or other disk".
Choose that option and it should let you do your backup (it'll ask you what you want to restore... user accounts & folders, apps, etc.) You probably just want to have it restore everything.
When you get a new disk you really don't want to run Time Machine interactively to pick the restore. The interactive mode was really designed to help you search for subsets of files to restore (when you're missing just one or two things). You'll be missing a LOT if you try to do a restore that way.
There are some caveats... since you probably already created a user account without doing a restore first, you probably already created an account with the same name that you had before. Migration Assistant wont let you do a full restore overwriting an existing account. You can get around this by creating a temporary account (and flag it as an 'administrative' account), then delete all other accounts on the fresh hard drive. Now when you do the Migration you will have no conflicting accounts and all will go as expected. You can then delete the temporary admin account when you're done.
Time Machine should figure out that the backup does belong to your current machine BUT that the disk being backed up is NOT the original disk. This will cause it to not trust that it can tell what data has changed since the last backup and forces something called a "deep traversal". A deep traversal means it will do a comparison of every file in the backup with the corresponding file on computer to determine if it's the same -- and this takes about as long as an original Time Machine backup (as if you deleted the whole thing and started a new backup) except you wont lose your backup history. Expect the first backup to take many hours to complete. After that initial "deep traversal" you'll get normal backup performance on all subsequent backups.

  • Final cut xprs 4 and capturing HDV from tape

    Hi all
I just tried for the first time to get FCXP4 to capture from my Canon HV20 in hidef and the software didn't do what the manual says it would do.
Manual tells me to create a new bin in the browser and then hit command 8 and instead of the DV capture window it would start a dialog box to capture HDV.
Well, it doesn't. It just says I don't have a video device connected.
Even though the same camcorder is captured by the same software just fine in standard def. HELP!

Do you have any other devices connected? How is the camera connected? What settings are on the media? What settings are you using in FCE? Did you change the settings before you initiated capture? Does system profiler see the camera?

  • Options for capturing from DVD

i'm reposting in hope of a quick answer since my original question has changed.  in short, i have some vhs footage that's been converted to dvd (using a simple dvd-recorder) as well as some camcorder footage already on dvd.  now i want to edit the dvd footage in iMovie.  i understand there are several products that will convert the DVD signal into something manageable by iMovie.  i'd like to know which will work best and which is the best value for the money.
    my choices are:
    1) canopus advc 55 or 110 ($170-220)
    2) something like the elgato vcd (converts to mp4?) ($85)
    3) DVDxDV software (converts to quicktime?) ($29)
aside from the advantage for canopus of converting directly from vhs, is there any other reason (e.g. in terms of how the footage is converted) that would justify the price of the canopus now that everything's on dvd?

sounds like there isn't much of an advantage to spring for canopus unless you're starting from a true analog source, like vhs.  mp4 is not the ideal import to iMovie in terms of resolution, so DVDxDV trumps elgato.
conclusion: dvdxdv seems to be one of the best available ways to import DVD into iMovie.  not a bad price, and can be tested using the free version.

  • Soundtrack for FCP from tapes

    Hi there,
I need to import into my project a series of old commentaries that were orginally recorded on tapes.
Can I use an ADVC100 (canopus) that I have at hand ?
If yes could someone advise me and guide me for best settings to be used
    Many thanks
    Ivan

    The Canopus should work.
Connect your tape machine's audio output to the Canopus's audio IN
Open up Audio Midi Setup (it's found in your applications>utilities folder) and set the Canopus as the default device for Input and 48khz as the sample rate.
Open up Soundtrack Pro. On the right side of the application window, select the Recording tab. For Track 1, set the input to the Canopus, stereo and two chanels (1 & 2) and set it as the target recording track.
Play the tape and hit the Record button on the bottom of the Mixer window.
If you are unsure how to use STP, the help manual is reasonably written.
Otherwise, QT Pro 7 may be a simpler way to go for simple audio recording.
    Good luck,
