Archiving Strategies - Need Help moving files to DVD

I have hundreds of images (.DNG) scattered across three drives that I want to archive to multiple DVDs. Is there a utility or an easy way of doing this?

Hi,
No!
Is the simplest answer. You will need to spend time and decide which file goes where. Grab a coffee and.....

The way that Dropbox works is that it keeps a copy of all your files in your local Dropbox folder on your hard drive (which is, by default, directly under your home folder). Adding files to that folder will sync them to the Dropbox server.
You do of course have to download the Dropbox application to enable this (download link at the top right of http://dropbox.com ).

I need help moving my Photoshop 7 from my old laptop to my new laptop which is running Windows 7 Enterprise. I’ve tried two routes unsuccessfully. I install the CD, it does not autoplay. I execute Autoplay.exe at the root directory, I am welcomed, I choose English, I accept the EULA, I get the Install/Explore choices window, with the Install button already selected, I click the Photoshop button, the CD spins, and nothing happens.  In the 2nd attempt I execute Setup.exe in the Photoshop directory, and nothing happens at all.  I’m never even offered the opportunity to enter my product code. What should I do?

There could is likely a compatibility problem between the old software and the newer operating system.

The new user account didn't work?
Or, the firmware flash didn't work?
I would try reconnecting the data ribbon. It is cramped and difficult to get to, but it may be some corrosion or a poor connection causing the issue.
It's worth a try, as the DVR-115 is a good drive. They don't make them any more........
You can find an optical drive installation video (on the following page) to help you with your efforts:

• Need help moving masters to external drive

Drag images from internal drive to external...
Relocate Masters...
Locate Referenced Files......
I realize these options are available, but I'm wondering which way to do this. Out of 160 GB of images about 1/2 of them are imported into Aperture while the remaining 1/2 are on the Mac but not in Aperture. All images are on my internal drive and I use Aperture as referenced masters, not managed. I need to make space on my internal drive and need to move all images (those already imported and those not yet imported) to an external. Given my current set up (1/2 imported 1/2 not), which option is best for a clean move to the external w/o messing up Aperture?
Thank you,
Jerry

Jerry -- sorry, this thread slipped by.  I haven't had the time recently to be attentive.

So, I still need a little help with this. If I have this folder structure on my internal drive and 1/2 of those images are imported into Aperture (but referenced), and I use the "Relocate" feature, how will they be moved? Will it take the folders to the external or just the images, leaving the folders on the internal drive?
I'm afraid to experiment in case it messes things up. Any help is greatly appreciated.
1.  Don't be afraid to experiment -- set up a practice Library and use it to experiment.  That's how all of us learned what we know.
2.  Your situation is a little peculiar, and I'm going to recommend something I wouldn't otherwise.  First, backup your system and confirm your backup.  Then go ahead and use Finder to copy all the Finder folders and files in question, intact, to a new drive.  Then delete the ones on your system drive.  Then open Aperture and run "File➞Locate Referenced Files" to re-attach your Aperture Images to your moved files.  You may have to run "File➞Locate Referenced Files" more than once (but most likely not) in order to end up with no Images that have missing Originals.  (If you need to, search for posts on the board about using this command.)
At that point, you have done what you set out to do: move all of your photo files to an external drive while retaining the connection between those that are Aperture Originals and their corresponding Images in Aperture.
But you haven't addressed the very good point brought up by bjurasz, which is that you are going out of your way to maintain competing databases.  Aperture is a database of your Images.  It has _outstanding_ storage and retrieval capabilities.  Finder is a database of your files.  It doesn't do a tenth the job Aperture does.  Finder is a file manager.  Aperture is an image manager (that does good file management).  Aperture has _terrific_ tools for helping you instantly retrieve _any_ subset of your Images (e.g.: family, spouse, dog, students from 2010, science students from 2010, vacation photos, vacation photos w. spouse, etc.).  The key to this is simply tagging your Images (e.g.: grayscale 2010 vacation photos w. spouse and dog) so that you can retrieve them as needed.  Importantly, you are not confined to a flat folder structure and whatever information you can stuff into the file name, as you are with Finder.  (Yes, more or less -- Finder is actually much more sophisticated than many realize or use.)
I suggest moving more fully into Aperture, learning what tags are available and deciding how to use them, designing an Aperture Library structure that meets your needs, and transitioning your Finder collection of photo files to an Aperture database of Images.
Ask more questions -- might be best to start new threads as they come up.

• Need help sorting fil

i have a brand new MuVo n200
i need help, i put my cd's in and everyhting and i filled it with songs ans i can play them and everything, but i hate thats itssorted in ABC order. i cannot figure how to put them so it is in order by the CD or the bandname.
please help.
message me on aim if you want [email protected]][email protected]

To group the songs into albums or artist groups, I would definitely suggest putting all the tracks from each album/group in its own folder on your PC and put the folder on the muvo in just the same way as you would put a single mp3. The player (in normal play mode) will then play each folder all the way through before moving on to the next one alphabetically (or numerically, if you put numbers at the start of the folder names) and you can then use 'skip folder' to skip through to find the particular album or artist you're looking for. Play around with the shuffle modes too - you can shuffle within folders or just shuffle everything if you want.
Tracks will normally be played alphabetically. To get them to play in order of track number, put numbers at the beginning of each file name. E.g.: file 'examplesong.mp3' would become '0_ examplesong.mp3' If you've got tonnes of songs and you're worried about it taking ages, the computer will do it for you! Click on 'my computer', then click on 'Muvo N200 media explorer'.. This shows the contents of your player. Choose a folder to reorder the songs in and click on it to display the songs. In the pictures along the top of the window, 4th from the right is an icon with a downward facing arrow and an A above a Z. Click on this, it's called 'custom sort'. You can then use the arrows at the bottom to change the order of your tracks to how you want them. Click OK, and they'll all be numbered in that order!
For instructions on how to create folders in mediasource, read the thread in this link:
http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=dap&message.id=926
I don't think you can put folders within folders in the muvo, but just the one layer really helps organisation.
Hope that helps!

PS- scroll down in the thread in the link: Jeremy CL was nice enough to give pictures in his instructions! If you'd like more help, type 'create folders' or something into the forum search as there's probably quite a lot of advice kicking about here!Message Edited by flaneur on 03-27-2005 :8 PM

• New mac user needs help transfering files from Dell...

I have a Dell running Windows XP and need help transfering the files from the dell to the mac.
Also I have no idea what OP system I have, how do you tell which one you have???

Go to the blue Apple menu and scroll down to "About this Mac"
In the summary window that opens you will find the following information:
Mac OS X version (assuming you are running OS X)
Processor speed.
Memory
Startup disk
The More Info button will take you to an in-depth overview of hardware, network set-up and installed software.
As far as transference is concerned, you can either transfer files via CD, DVD, external hard drive... or by networking the two computers.
Here's a link for an overview concerning Mac to PC connectivity:

I hope the above helps.

• Newbie Needs Help - Moving to CD

I'm running winXP and have downloaded the latest CS 5.5 version of Dreamweaver - I've created a small series of interlinking web pages with the 'main site' being a folder on my Desktop called Testsite.  As far as I'm aware all the relevant pages/documets/images are contaned within my Desktop folder and everything runs from index.html which sits within my testsite folder.   Ultimately, I would like to be able put a CD in a drive and automatically launch a browser that would open my home page (i.e. index.html).  I need help on all this but I will googe for the auto launch bit - at the moment I would appreciate any advice on burnng my site to a CD.  Because I have created the site on my PC I'm assuming all my dreamweaver internals/links are in the form C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\Testsite - so I'm guessing if I just copy my Desktop Testsite folder to a CD and run index.html on another PC my little web site is not going to work.  I have googled but keep getting pages about running the actual Dreamweaver applicaton from a CD and installing it on a PC - not the way I want to do it.  I'm not interested in moving Dreamweaver to a CD - just the site/pages I have created.  Any advice apprecited.

All long as all of your files are linked with relative links (eg: /path/to/file.jpg and not http://www.domain.com/path/to/file.jpg) you should be fine.  Auto-starting can be an issue because there are some operating systems that don't auto start discs.  So you should maybe include instructions with your disc in case the autorun does not work.

• Need Help With File Matching Records

I need help with my file matching program.
Here is how it suppose to work: FileMatch class should contain methods to read oldmast.txt and trans.txt. When a match occurs (i.e., records with the same account number appear in both the master file and the transaction file), add the dollar amount in the transaction record to the current balance in the master record, and write the "newmast.txt" record. (Assume that purchases are indicated by positive amounts in the transaction file and payments by negative amounts.)
When there is a master record for a particular account, but no corresponding transaction record, merely write the master record to "newmast.txt". When there is a transaction record, but no corresponding master record, print to a log file the message "Unmatched transaction record for account number ..." (fill in the account number from the transaction record). The log file should be a text file named "log.txt".

I am not sure what is wrong with my code above to make my results different from the correct results.
Much help is appreciated. Please help.

From the output, it looks like one problem is just formatting -- apparently you're including a newline in log entries and not using tabs for the newmast output file.
As to why the numbers are off -- just from glancing over it, it appears that the problem is when you add multiple transaction values. Since account.combine() is so simple, I suspect that you're either adding creating transaction objects incorrectly or not creating them when you should be.
Create test input data that isolates a single case of this (e.g., just the Mary Smith case), and then running your program in a debugger or adding debugging code to the add/combine method, so you can see what's happening in detail.
Also I'd recommend reconsidering your design. It's a red flag if a class has a name with "Create" in it. Classes represent bundles of independant state and transformations on that state, not things to do.

• Need help burning project to DVD

Can anyone help me burn a PRE project to a DVD in .VOB (NTSC) format so it can be read by any DVD player connected to a TV, not a computer.  I know how it is supposed to be done in Premier Elements because I did it with small sample files, but whenever I try with a larger project, PRE always crashes during the encoding process..  First I will give the particulars of my system, then of my project, then of the trouble shooting I already tried, finally my experiences
System:
         Intel Pentium "E2200" dual core processor @ 2.2 GHZ speed
         3 GB RAM
         Windows 32bit Vista Home Premium with SP2 installed
         1/4 TB hard drive with 100MB free and 0% fragmented
          Intel G31/33 graphics processor
Projects:
         14 MB slide show consting of 5 MB JPEG files with audio or text captions and unedited  MPG4 files of 480x720 pixels imported from Samsung camcorder set at recording quality of 5 MB/sec.
         10 MB movie created in instant DVD by dragging above JPEG and MPG4 files from album
         Neither have additional narration or music tracks
         Both the above about 25 minutes on the timeline
Troubleshooting already tried:
         Burning project to folder instead of to DVD
         Exporting files to PC in MPG2 and AVI format
         Rendering the file (not all at once, but in separate work areas at a time)
         Burned to both -RW and -R DVD's
         Deselecting the "Fit contents to available space" quality option in the burn menu and manually selecting a bitrate speed of 3 MB/sec
         Repeating the above in selective start of windows with all start programs and non-Microsoft processes disabled
         Repeating the above for both Slide show and movie projects
Results:
         The encoding process never completes, but it abends at different stages in different trials--never the same point.  Sometimes it crashes at less than 20% complete; sometimes it makes it to 96% complete, then stops responding.  Sometimes it generates a crash report, and sometimes it just stops responding, so I have  to open task manager to end the program.   Sometimes I get a message that PRE is dangerously low on system memory.  I just close the window and procede, because I am watching physical memory usage in Task Manager while PRE is encoding and it is consistantly about 60%.  CPU usage often peaks at 100%, but not for more than 60 secs at a time.  When the system crashed, it generated an error message in the administrative events log sometimes reading: "The entry <name of project file> in the hash map cannot be updated"; event ID 3013, which Microsoft found no help for.  When it simply stops responding, it leaves no error message in the system log until I close the program.
         I don't think I have a system error, because my system sussessfully burned two minute test projects, and don't have a project error, because I could render the timeline.  What is going on here?
         B.T.W, some people I talked to about this problem who make their living in photos and electronics suggest I buy a camcorder which records in MPEG2 format, then simply burn the MPEG2 files to DVD without re-encoding, insert the DVD into any player connected to a TV, and play.  I don't think this advice is correct.   Opinions?

• [JS] Need Help Removing File extension (in CS2 and CS3)

Hello All.
I have a menu in a dialog that needs to list some file names, but without their file extensions (which will always be .txt in my case). The following is some code that successfully does this in CS3, but I also need it to work in CS2. Do you have any other ways to do this? One code that works in both versions (CS2 and CS3) is ideal.
myNameWithoutExtensionFunction = function( myNameWithExtention ) {
myNameWithoutExtension = myNameWithExtention
myEndOfFileName = myNameWithoutExtension.lastIndexOf( "." )   // get the last period (.) in the filename
if ( myEndOfFileName > -1 ) {
      myNameWithoutExtension = myNameWithoutExtension.substr( 0, myEndOfFileName )
return myNameWithoutExtension
Thanks in advance.
Dan

I realized my mistake. The above code works just fine in CS2. My mistake was elsewhere. The name I was sending to this function wasn't being recognized by CS2. Once I corrected that and sent a valid name to this function it worked. So in case someone needs to remove file extensions, feel free to use the above function!
