Archiving text messages

I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to archive text messages from the iphone (in this case, iphone 3G) onto a macbook, without having to purchase specialized software? I have read online posts that suggest a program called PhoneView, but I am skeptical to download programs online.
Thanks.

You can send them one at a time to your email by forwarding the message, and simply putting your email address in the To: field.  However, that can become tedious quickly.
A better option might be to download an app that will allow you to save all the messages in a file, then you can edit out the ones you don't need.

  • Is there a way to archive text messages on your PC to be re-read later?

I just simply want to be able to save text messages on my computer so that I'll have an archive of them later. Is there a simple way to do this?

There are third party programs that do this (SyPhone, PhoneView, Missing Sync for iPhone), but I think only the Missing Sync one has a Windows version.
There are several more suggested programs/methods in the comments here:

  • Archiving text messages received on iPhone

My daughter sends me great pictures and text messages on my iPhone about my grandchildren and I would like to save them as a form of "baby book".  e.g. create a Word doc that could save to hard drive.  How can I do that?

Julian, I sync iPhone to MacBook.  My desktop is a PC and that is still the computer I view as my master hard drive...the ultimate destination for things documents.  So, I could sync to MacBook and have a folder e.g. "Jessie's Baby Book" (Jessie is one of my granddaughters) which I could then transfer easily enough to my PC.  Someday our household will be all Mac.
Deggie, thanks for your suggestion, I will check it out.  I had searched around a bit myself and found MobileSyncBrowser which seemed to do this sort of thing but I thought I wanted info from Apple Support Community to lend a bit of credibility.
Thanks both of you and I will stay tuned for more suggestions before I buy anything.

  • Archiving text messages on 3G

My wife is having an affair. I want to monitor text messages, especially to and from a certain number. Her number is on my account. How do I do it?

AT&T, like most carriers, wipe SMS's from their system after about 48hrs...too much data to store. Follow my advice, get a good lawyer, he/she will obtain a court order forcing AT&T to retain the SMS in question. If you try doing this yourself, believe me, you will end up with worse problems than your wife having an affair.

  • Avoiding text message archiving?

My company has recently started archiving text message due to state laws. I rather not have some of my texts archived for personal reasons (nothing sketchy). Do apps like TextNow prevent this or are those archived too?
    Thanks.

Just to follow up with more info on this...it appears I can send
information to short codes (non-premium), just not receive anything back.
Is there something that needs to be enabled in my account to be able to
receive texts from short codes? Thanks!

  • Retrieving previous text messages

Can a copy of a series of text messages from December 2013 be retrieved? (with or without a court order)

    Hello julesM21
Archiving text messages is a hot topic recently. While there are several apps in the App Store that allows texts to be archived, there are very few options available if the texts has already been erased. The great news is that we have an in-house option to retrieve text messages. Such a request would need to have a subpoena from a law enforcement officer to retrieve. For more information, please contact our customer care dept for assistance.
    Thank you…

  • How can I automatically archive my text messages?

Is there a way to archive my text message conversations somewhere (iCloud, Gmail, Dropbox) and have them automatically sync at regular intervals?
Please note I'm talking about ongoing archival, not just restoring a backup.
    Thanks for any tips.

    Not that I know of.
I use PhoneView (Mac) to periodically manually archive my texts. It does very nice PDFs which I then store in DropBox and Evernote. TouchCopy (Mac and Windows) does something similar.

  • Problems with importing text messages from PC Suit...

Problems with importing text messages from PC Suit 7.1.18.0 to my Nokia 5800
I am trying to import a csv file that contains text messages (Note that this file was created using PC Suit 7.1.18.0) to a subfolder that I have created to My Folders but PC Suits only imports the text messages to the Draft folder. Note that initially it shows that the messages are import in the correct folder but after a refresh it shows them in the Draft Folder. Is their any setting that I should change in the PC Suit or the phone? My computer runs on Windows XP Service Pack 3 and the Nokia 5800 was upgraded to the latest firmware v20.0.012
     Thanks for your help

Most phones only allows importing of draft and archived box for SMS.
To do a restoring, you need to backup the SMS as a .nbu file using PC Suite and restore later.
If you got an SD card, you can also do a backup on the SD Card (backup.arc) then restore later (reset and restore: backup.arc and mmc).
What's the law of the jungle?

  • How can I save text messages to my Mac and will that reduce "Other" in storage?

I have hundreds (or more) of text messages on my iPhone 5 that for personal reasons, I want to save. There are far too many to do screenshots. I want to save them to my MacBook Pro Retina in a readable and printable format. The reason is that I read that text messages can cause the "Other" storage to be higher. My "Other" is over 6 GB on a 16 GB iphone. Therefore I want to save texts, print them, and delete from phone.
First question: Is it true that text messages contribute to the size of "Other"?
Second question: How can I save texts to Mac in readable format so they could be printed?
Third question: How in the world do I delete all these texts from my iPhone efficiently? Is there a way to "mass delete"?
When you are answering this, perhaps it is noteworthy that:
    (a) I've had an iPhone since a 3G in 2009, and the texts I want to save have been accumulating since then.
    (b) My "Other" has gradually gotten larger over the years.
    (c)  I sync with itunes regularly.
    (d) I've never had any problems with an iphone or with my data.
    (e) I've restored from backup only three times, when I upgraded to the iphone 4, 4S, and 5.
I want to get this "Other" cleared up before I upgrade to the iphone 5S.
    Thank you.

You can select to export a folder to save as a .mbox file. This file would need to be imported if you wanted to view the messages.
    Select mailbox (folder)
Under Mailbox in the Menu bar select Export Mailbox...
You might also want to check out the demo for EagleFiler by the author for SpamSieve. You could view and search the messages archived in EagleFiler.

    Regarding Mail being slow....
Is it only Mail that is slow?  How much free space on your drive? Use Disk Utility to find available space.

  • Is there ANY way to move a text message from archi...

Sorry, if I haven't put this question in the right part of the forum, but I'm new in here.
So, I accidentally moved a text message from my inbox to archive on my cell phone (nokia 7230) and I would really like to get it back. Is there any way I could do this? Any program? PC Suite perhaps? Any option on the phone? This is really important to me, please help me. Any help will be appreciated.

ReallyMadCustomer, unwanted text messages from certain phone numbers can be a nussiance! I totally understand. The free Call and Messaging block feature was designed to block ten digit mobile numbers only. http://vz.to/MqEgqB I apologize that this feature is unable to block e-mail addresses. However, if this is a marketing text message, we recommend that you reply with the word "STOP" to remove your mobile number from that mailing list.

  • How do I get my old text messages from my iPhone to my new Galaxy?

Recently, I just upgraded from an iPhone 4 to a Samsung Galaxy 4.  I upgraded my account from Sprint and got my new phone at Best Buy.  I'm trying to get into my iTunes because I know I recently synched my iPhone on my iTunes a little over a week ago.  What I'm trying to do is get into my iTunes because I know my iCloud is backed up on iTunes.  I got all of my contacts and pictures already transferred from my iPhone to my Galaxy.  Now, that last thing I'm really worried about is my old text messages. There is this old text message that I'm needing to save, but I can't seem to figure out how to get my old text messages to my new phone.
Is there some way I can get those back or what I need to go to Geek Squad to help me with this?

Apple has not designed the iPhone for loading up old messages across phone platforms.
Screenshot the important stuff on the Android or use a tool to archive the old SMS on your computer.

  • Is there a way to read text messages from the past in a thread that has been ongoing for months?

Is there a way to view/recover messages from months ago in a thread that has been ongoing? The messages are not deleted. If i just keep "loading new messages" a) it will take all day, I've tried, and b) it freezes on me.

Try the computer apps PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Mac & PC):

    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Both will allow you to archive your text messages to your computer and read them easily.

  • How to retrieve text messages that I mistakenly deleted??(Please help!!)

I've had the Verizon VX8300 for 3 years since 2007 and I have upgraded to the HTC Incredible Droid and received it as a Christmas gift on Christmas morning. When my dad was disconnecting the old phone, I figured that it would be automatically transferable because everything else transferred like my contacts, voice messages, pics, etc. I was looking through old texts and accidentally deleted all of my texts that I've kept for souvenir and they were very memorable and special to me from friends/family. Now I was wondering if there's anyway I can get this data back whether it's getting a printout or using an online free trial of a text message retriever like Asfotech, Bitpim, or Wondershare Data Recovery. I've went to 3 different Verizon stores and none were helpful and didn't even bother looking at my old phone.
PS: I know you need like a court order or a subpoena but that is extremely silly and unnecessary because would I honestly need a court order just to retrieve harmless innocent messages like "What's Up?" or "How's it going, man?". Someone said that Verizon archives the messages and it's my privacy so I should have the right to get a printout of MY messages and it would be so messed up if Verizon wouldn't let someone look at their OWN text messages on their OWN phone if they deleted them on accident. It's not like they would be invading my privacy anyways all they would need to do is print them out without looking at them. I have nothing to hide anyways so it wouldn't be a big deal to me.

I understand what you are saying but whats to say for example the account owner (a parent) decided to have all the messages retrieved for them of their child who is on the account??? Verizon has NO IDEA if that person is their child, relation, boyfriend, employee..... That is why court orders are necessary.
But in your case unless the messages you want are from the last 6-10 days, they are (as Ernie Harwell used to say) "LONG GONE" from Verizon's servers.
I know the feeling of losing texts you planned to keep. A few months ago, I was playing with force closing apps and in doing so deleted a bunch I was keeping. That is why I found an app to sand messages to an email address also.

  • How to send a new text message without appending it to a previous message to the intended recipient

I have a new iPhone 5c with IOS 7. When I try to send a new text message to my sister, the new message is appended to an old one I sent her. I do not want to delete the old one, but I don't want the new message tied to the old one. How might I get around this?

It is the latter (it's in the same thread), so I guess you have answered my question, which means I must delete the previous thread. As to why I would want to retain the old thread; (1) I might want to discuss two totally different topics over the same interval of time, or (2) I possibly need to retain some of the info in the older thread for reference, such as email address, phone number, etc. I am new to not only Apple, but smart phones in general. I guess there is a way to archive old threads (icloud, etc.), but I was hoping that not necessary for relatively new threads that might still be active. At any rate, I guess I can quit chasing the wind by hoping to retain the old messages while entertaining a new one with the same recipent. Thanks for your help.
