Archlinux for Wii

Heya folks, some of you might know we can use arch on the wii.
burrently we are using the archlinuxppc repos.
only issue is, most packages are compiled with altivec, which the wii's ppc processor dont have.
does anyone know how to get in touch with the ppc team?
we need any patches they have, for gcc and gcc-libs especially, their cvs is down.
any help appreciated!

  • Is Archlinux for me ? I think so

    Hi,
I'm really thinking of moving my computers to Arch. Starting with a test laptop and then, if I'm happy with how things go, my workstations. Why ?
1- From what I've read so far, I really like the philosophy behind this OS. Archlinux meaning of simplicity is very clever.
2- I'm fed'up with developers putting lot's of effort in "newbie friendliness" and making very questionable decisions.
3- I'm fed'up  with user communities that don't wan't to know how, and don't care about it.
4- Sick of the never ending Windows vs Linux war on the Ubuntu forums...
5- I'd like to have an OS that I can configure from the bottom.
6- I'd like to contribute to an Open Source OS that doesn't target "ease of use" above everything else.
7- I wan't to have the feeling that I have complete control over my machines. It seems like I've lost it in the last few years...
7- I find the Archlinux logo awsome
    Ok, about me now :
I have 10 years of "just Linux" computing. Used mainly Debian, RedHat and Ubuntu. Installed a lot of stuff by hand and from source. Recompiled the kernel a few times. I love Linux in general, but I'm looking for something else, in the Linux world of course... I'm not a programmer but I've started to learn a bit of Python.
So the question asked in the subject : Is Archlinux for me ? Why would I chose Arch instead of Slackware or Debian ? And what would be the learning curve like ? Does Arch "shortens" the life of a computer since you have to do lots of compiling ? This last question sounds a bit silly but I wanted to ask anyway...
I really feel that Arch would be a great choice for me but I'd like to hear experienced users on theses questions.
Ciao and thanx for your time !

    Hello there.
I have been in your situation myself. I have mainly been using FreeBSD besides Windows, tried out a few other dists like fedora, debian, gentoo, slack etc.
About two months ago i had a problem with Win 7 on my desktop and descided that enough is enough and installed Ubuntu on it insteed. Reason for it being Ubuntu was that i needed a fast working system for schoolwork that i didnt want to do on my Thinkpad.
Anyway so i started using it and i really did enjoy it, i actually still have it on this computer. For a week or so more then i will change it to Arch.
I tried out arch the same week as ubuntu but i played around with arch on the Thinkpad. I am so impressed. It is a fantastic system to be operating. It uses so minimal of your resources, i know exactly what is in and on it, if i want to fix something and dont know how there is actually a community with what i would like to call REAL PEOPLE, which Ubuntu doesnt have.
Just saying, give it a try and i am sure you will fall in love, I did.

  • IMAC Displayport HDMI INPUT for Wii, PS3, XBOX360 etc

The iMAC supports to use its 27" monitor as an external monitor for other devices through its Mini Displayport that supports both output AND input.
There are many HDMI adapters for the Mini Display adapter but I want to know if a special adapter is required for input and what are the specifications/standards/name for the adapters, contacts and cables that are required?
Specifically I am going to use the 27" display for gaming consoles mentioned above (Wii with the Wii2HDMI adapter).
What do I need to know to write down on my shopping list? Thanks!

At this point I think that you are all wishing & hoping, but are perhaps operating on hype. Yes the 27" iMac is the first iMac with a video import. It has a bi-directional mini-DisplayPort. Various models of Macs have had mini-DisplayPorts for video output since 2008. It is not a new port on Macs.
There are a number of adapters for this port, some made by Apple, some made by a number of 3rd party Mac accessory manufacturers. Currently you can buy the following adapters; mini-DisplayPort to DVI (D), mini-DisplayPort to VGA, mini-DisplayPort to Dual-link DVI (D), and mini-DisplayPort to HDMI. There is also a mini-DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable. The other thing to remember is that the mini-DisplayPort does not carry audio.
    However, if you go to the Apple iMac webpages you will find that Apple is very specific about how you can use the mini-DisplayPort at this time. This is what it says;
    Mini DisplayPort.
The Mini DisplayPort lets you connect an external display, including the Apple LED Cinema Display, to your iMac. On the 27-inch iMac, the same port offers input, too. So you can connect any external source that has DisplayPort output — including a MacBook or MacBook Pro — and use your iMac as a display. (emphasis mine)
So Apple is saying that currently you can use the 27" iMac as a display for devices with mini-DisplayPort output, such as another Mac, like one of the notebooks. Meaning that you can use the 27" as an external monitor for a MacBook Pro with a mini-DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable.
Anything that you have read at outside websites with reviews about the new iMac and hooking up a Wii, a PlayStation, a Blu-Ray DVD, etc is pure speculation at this point and there is no guarantee that patching mini-DisplayPort adapters to other technology standard cables, such as DVI or HDMI, will provide the proper input to use the 27" as a display.

  • No Video for Wii

I have a 40E22OU TV. Using HDMI for my BlueRay and Cable. Those work fine. I am having trouble hooking up my Wii. I get sound, no video. There is no yellow port for Video. ANy ideas how I can get video for the Wii?

I believe you need to put your Wii's yellow cable into the connection marked "CVBS/Y", and plug the red and white audio cables into the corresponding coloured connections.
I think that this TV uses a shared connection for component/composite, so on your input selection, try selecting one called "AV" or "composite", instead of "component".

I'm sorry, but we don't have a version of Flash Player for the Wii.  You'll want to contact Nintendo to ask for this feature to be implemented.

  • Key features of ArchLinux for geeks and developers

    Hello fellow Archers!
Here at ATNoG [1], we have bi-weekly meetings with discussions of several topics.
Planned for next Wednesday is a talk about which Operating System/Distribution each one uses, their major features and why each one would be good for others.
This is a networks and telecommunications group. Most of us work on low level, kernel code (network protocols), or mobile and security applications. Most people here use Windows, Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, and maybe a few others, like Gentoo.
What I would like was to get (on top of mine and another's Archer here) your personal contributions on why ArchLinux is great, in this case for developers, people who like to have control of their machines, but also don't want software to get in his way through the times.
    Thanks in advance,
    André!

Archlinux provides a good amount of control on what occurs in your system.  You may hear about this over and over but what does this actually mean?  Some distros come with prepackaged applications and/or customizations.  Some of these annoy me, for example, linux mint's(LM) firefox has a LM theme associated with it where if you google, 1/4 of the page has LM logos and 'garbage'.  I like vanilla firefox, where it is kept simple, clean, and functional.  This is just one aspect.  Another area of control is in regards to understanding the libraries, dependencies, etc needed for an application to run.  Because the default installation is bare bone, you get the opportunity to really understand the background requirements in running an application by debugging it and looking at the errors in logs.  This helps the understanding that library A is needed to run application X.  This knowledge is useful in case there are certain versions of library A (newer or older) that can cause bugs to occur in application X.  Then we can look for the appropriate version and rummage through out of sync mirrors or even the library archive repository.
The arch way of configuration is simple in that the configuration is streamlined to follow the BSD style init.
Arch is rolling release, but unlike some distros, it is bleeding edge.  Other rolling release distros can be outdated, simply holding onto packages, kernels, etc for a longer period.  You may notice that they are not running on the latest kernel among other things.  This may be crucial, in particular to a kernel, if the latest one has a fix for your hardware.  Bleeding edge just adds a bonus to Arch that you always have access to the latest versions giving you the power to choose to stick with a stable older version or have it updated.
Overall, in the one month of using linux I've learnt a lot just by reading the wiki on Arch.  It is by far the best wiki a distro has made so far for me.  I haven't seen any other distros provide such a vast and updated wiki.  I normally hate asking questions but really there is rarely a need as the wiki plus forums provide all the answers.  Of course if there is an unique issue, the community comes together as long as you provide detailed information and have exhausted all other sources.
Although I am not a dev, I would imagine the above reasons plenty for any dev to welcome this type of environment where control in their environment is critical to the success of the project they are working on.

  • Net access for wii and iPhone via iMac - help!

If I've got it right my fairly new imac flat panel has a built-in Airport networking card that actually allows me to connect my wii and iphone to the internet without a separate router. I actually managed to set up the network with the wii but later lost the connection. I just got an iphone so I've been trying to get the wifi access going going again using the standard mac os utilities but I just can't figure it out and I can't find any useful guidance. Suggestions? Thanks.

  • Do you have to leave Archlinux for the AMD bulldozer

Phoronix recently showed multiple Benchmarks that shows when you compile applications with -march=bdver1 a lot of applications gets more than double fast as with generic compilation and most applications gets a 25% boost.
With that boost you can even beat a Intel Core i7 990X. Without that boost you Bulldozer is slower than a i5 2500k at the most time.
So is there a easy way to get a system which is compiled with -march=bdver1
I mean we dont talk about 3% speed increase, we talk about 25-50% and if you pay 250 € for a processor we talk about 65-125 €. That is a lot of money which gets wasted because the OS is not optimized for the architecture.
Or do you think the difference from -march=generic to -march=bdver1 will minimize over time and so the generic compilation will get faster on the bulldozer?
i already tried to start a Archlinux optimized for K10 for my Phenom but the increase of speed with the optimisation wasn´t that much. On the Bulldozer it is a completely different thing. There is a _huge_ difference.

Leonid.I wrote:Optimizing kernel is irrelevant for overall performance because the code is not being executed in real time.
Yes the low latency of a kernel means that there's not alot of 'raw' performance to be had by more aggressive optimization levels due to:
    1. Most (I think) of the performance critical parts of the kernel is already manually optimized using compiler extensions which more directly define the code to be generated and doesn't really benefit from higher optimization levels.
    2. Unlike cpu intensive apps the kernel is designed to be very low latency and as such tight loop optimizations which benefit cpu intensive apps won't benefit the kernel the same way. That said, the already low kernel latency can be lowered further by harder optimization, but you can forget anything remotely like 25%.
Leonid.I wrote:A much better idea is to identify bottleneck apps and optimize them.
Exactly, if you are using compressors, encoders, emulators, rendering, or other computationally intensive programs on a regular basis then there can certainly be worthwhile to compile them with higher optimization levels than the defaults (often -O2) and also natively for your hardware (-march=native). If you REALLY want the best possible optimization you should probably use Profile Guided Optimization aswell which typically results in 5-20% improvement on cpu intensive stuff. Be aware though that alot of programs in this category uses hand-optimized assembly which a compiler can't optimize and as such won't benefit from a recompile with higher optimization (although you can often disable assembly code and see if the compiler can generate faster code for your platform).
As for Phoronix's 'benchmarks', take them with a LARGE grain of salt. The tests have been shown lacking again and again and most of the time it seems the site-owner who is doing them doesn't have a clue of what he is doing. This isn't even limited to compiler benchmarks, he's been benchmarking 3d game performance on systems with 3d compositing on against systems without 3d compositing and presented them as fair comparisons. Overall the tests are of extremely poor quality, not surprising then that he seems to go for quantity.
edit: Oh and I'd like to hear of the results you get when recompiling for the bulldozer architecture as I'm thinking of going for that next time I upgrade my machines (won't be for another 1-1 1/2 year though so no hurry )

  • Compile mono in archlinux for a different distro

    Hi guys,
I know the subject it's a little bit weird but let me explain. I've a little VPS with a debian. I have to compile mono from sources, because mono in debian stable is too old for my pourpose. The VPS has a very low memory and it failed to compile from sources every time because during compilation mcs ( mono compiler ) uses too much memory and I didn't figure out how limit memory consumption ( with gcc it's pretty simple ) . Now there is the question : Can I compile mono in my archlinux and then copy all the building directory in my VPS and run "make install" ? I think that there isn't any problem with hardware ( I've a 64 bit architecture for VPS and for mine ). If it's impossible, has someone a solution ? Thanks for any reply and sorry for my engliss.
    Kind regards,
    Campo.

It would probably be easier to set up apt-pinning on your Debian box and install mono from testing if that version is OK for you.

  • WRT150N Vs. Nintendo Wifi for Wii

Hello, I have had this problem for about a year now my Wifi on my Nintendo Wii works for 10 minutes (sometimes shorter) and then quits so I have to run to the other end of the house search something on my computer until my router wakes up again (this may take several minutes) and then quickly fix my internet connection from my Wii. I had one Error Codes that I searched on Nintendo it told me to change the wireless channel my router broadcasts on how could I do this? Also I think it might have something to do with my satelite TV?

    Hi
ofcourse you can try changing the wireless channel on the router itself.
for that , first open the internet explorer or any browser .
open the page - 192.168.1.1 > it will prompt u for a username and password.
enter , admin as username and pw.
on the router's web page , click on wireless tab .
you will see an option for channel there.
change it to - 1,6,9 or 11 !! any one of it .
and try observing th connection !

  • Using ArchLinux for daily work!

    Hello!
I started my Linux career with Debian Sarge (currently running on my server). For my desktop-machine I use gentoo Linux about 6 weeks, but it was to much "package-administration" for me. I like it to work with my console, but I want a distribution, who isn't so costly to administrate.
    config-files --> my job
package-management --> job of the distribution, without much work for me.
ArchLinux is a distribution, which hit's my philosphopy of a ideal Linux system.
    But their is a problem:
Arch is a very young distribution, which haven't so much packages like gentoo. Ok, no problem! I can made my packages easy by yourself!
But the basic system + desktop should be stable packages, without much error fixing.
    Now my question
Is ArchLinux "mature" to use it for the daily work, without much error fixing?
    Thank's for your answers!
    Greetings,
    flasher
P.S.: I hope someone can read my english, it's a little bit german-english

I've been using Arch as my main machine at work for several months now.  The updates have gone fairly well with no major problems.  Overall it's done better than other distros in this regard and so as far as stability goes I'd give it very high marks.
I only have two complaints which you may want to consider:
    1) If you are using it as a server it's tough to differentiate which updates are needed for security.  Yes you can ignore packages but unless you keep track of the security updates individually you'll have a tough time.  IMHO the Debian way is better where they have a source specifically for security updates.  That way you don't have to worry about your postgres dbase getting updated unless there's a security flaw.
    2) Using it as a desktop machine I had major problems with my USB card reader that I just couldn't ever figure out.  I tried just about everything I could imagine but never got it working.  Same hardware worked flawlessly in Ubuntu and OSX just by plug and play.
But to reiterate, I've been using it as my main machine at work for at least 3 months now with no failures.  So if you can get it working the way you want you should have no problem using it long-term

  • Connecting to nintendo wfc for wii with WRT160N

I am using Mcafee firewall and allowed all outbound connections but not inbound my router is WRT160N. Im having very slow connections for the wifi.I believe its my firewall or router, whether its the port forwarding or firewall problems. One question i may ask is when i port forward im using Applications and gamings tab > single port forwarding, however what should I put into Application name if it matters? Another question is I dont know my correct ip address. Which of these 2 is the correct one ms-dos with ipconfig/all or is it the status tab of the router connections site(192.168.2.1)

so according to this http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm\ the last section....if i enter 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.2.50 as my default gateway and ip address the generated info should be my correct static ip address? Also 192.168.2.50 would be my dynamic ip?...Clarification please thanks Rakasan

  • 20% off GCU not ringing up for Nintendoland Wii U

I had a problem today at my local Best Buy store. I attempted to purchase Nintendoland for Wii U. But it did not bring up the 20 off Gamers Club Unlocked discount. When I pointed this out to the cashier, he said the reason was that it was actually video game hardware. When I explained to him that Nintendoland is video game software that includes a pack-in remote, he said he wasn't sure why it wouldn't take off the 20 percent. I was then sent to Customer Service, who told me that the reason it did not ring up the discount was because the item was not full retail price. I explained to them that GCU is 20 percent off ALL new game software regardless of price. They kept insisting that it was not ringing up because the item was on sale. I had to show them the actual terms and conditions for GCU and showed them that there is no price restriction. At that point, no one in the store really had an explanation and the only manager on duty was unavailable in a meeting.
So I ended up wasting an hour round trip drive (sadly, not the 1st time and surely not the last.) Whether it is trade-in credit or another issue, I feel like I always have to police and/or educate the Customer Service staff to make sure that I'm getting the proper GCU benefits. Not to mention that it is pretty ingratiating to have to stand there and all but beg for the 20 percent off discount that is part of your paid membership. Groveling for an $8.20 discount leaves a bad taste for me. It is a shame, b/c GCU is such a great program -- save for issues like this that occur too frequently.
Can one of the mods please clarify? Thanks

    Hi jeremygary,
It sounds like you've got a pretty solid understanding of the Gamers' Club Unlocked new game discount, so I won't retread over familiar ground. To clarify though, the 20% GCU discount does apply to all new video game titles regardless of whether or not the game is on sale that week. It may not automatically apply to some titles due to how they're classified (games vs. games that include special peripherals), but our in-store teams should be aware of how to approach these issues. I was disheartened to read this may not have been the case during your recent visit.
Were you ultimately able to purchase a copy of Nintendo Land?
