Archlinux is moving to systemd

Hello!
As far as I know Archlinux is moving now to systemd. Personally I fine with systemd, because I'm using it already. I'm also fine with SysVinit. I use systemd, because a dev told me that the move will likely happen in future and I had to install Archlinux some days ago on my new laptop.
Please but this and similar informations in the "latest news area" of archlinux.org, so everyone know what will happend and can prepare for this (e.g. reading in the wiki about systemd or even migrating immediately to systemd, preparing for problems with self written scritps and so on). This way of communication is really important for the community and developers
I know some that companys think Facebook, Google+ or Twitter are a way to communicate with their customers, especially because their own website are overloaded with unrelated marketing buzzwords and badly structured. We shouldn't follow this way. We have a well structured website for this! Personally I think a Official Google+ Account is an euphemism
Thank you for your patience

Thanks!
fsckd wrote:moderator comment: hoschi, I have editted the title and removed "Official Announcement". This is not an official announcement and it will confuse people to say it is.
I'm apologize
Another point: Someone on the so-called "official" G+ stated:
"Arch will move to systemd only boot process..."
As Tom stated (and he maintains systemd and initscripts), this is not
true. This angers me because
1) Something untrue and/or unprecise is being posted on the "official" G+.
2) There are claims that this G+ is official. Neither our website, nor
any place else states that there is an official Arch G+ (or Facebook)
page and links to it. This G+ has not been approved by developers to be
"official". Yet, someone here claims to be the official G+.
This must stop. If we present ourselves on social media, I want it to be
approved on the private mailing list first. And if someone starts that
discussion, it will get a big -1 from me.

Question:
Did somebody informed phoronix about this? Phoronix itself is not the "most trustworthy source on the web", but wrong news are still wrong.
Also the "officiall" wasn't removed on the G+ page till now?
Well, I created that page on January and since then _we_ (managers' page: me,
Ionut, Ray, s, Daniel) never write something which wasn't announced by our
website. Until today.
I don't know who write that (neither I wanna know), but you pointed out
something true, so I already removed the "official" suffix from our page and
"fixed" the post about systemd. I hope this is ok now.

  • Constant Wifi Disconnect After Moving To SystemD

    Hi All,
    I used netcfg for months with a WPA2 connection using the initscripts. I finally moved to systemD. I was getting dbus errors from systemD using systemctl so updated via pacman which fixed the errors. I did this within minutes apart so not for sure if a kernel update broke something - stupid move on my part.
    Any how I followed the wiki guide for netcfg, within a few minutes and after a reboot was happily working away.  I configured the wifi like so:
    systemctl enable netcfg@gloryhole
    Then the wifi disconnecting started at random intervals but very quickly, what seems to be less than 3 minutes.

    After reading some forums they recommended net-auto-wireless.
    systemctl enable net-auto-wireless
    Still no luck, another forum recommended removing netcfg and trying some thing else, since they had constant disconnects. I installed wicd and disabled services that could conflict with wicd.  Disconnect problem still exists
    I verified hardware is OK, in windoze wifi card works great, pulled down many gigs with no problem testing. My laptop has native systemD install with wicd and works great so nothing with my AP.

    So still being frustrated and tired of having a long cat5 cable across my house I decided to take another whack at this.
    First thing first I disabled WPA2 on the AP and let it wide open, even though every other device was working. Was hoping to rule out wpa but instead it got worse.
    I first tried netcfg, after removing everything I could find on wicd. The issue with netcfg is I could connect but couldn't surf. A little testing showed that there is a problem with the wifi link established. It won't allow much or any traffic to go through. Pings barely work, surfing was hit and miss.
    I decided to just connect via cli, once again removed netcfg, wicd, removed any trace files, disabled related services and rebooted to remove previous entries.

    Interesting thing is I am getting a different deauthenticating reason, originally was 2. Deauthenticated reason=3 means "deauthenticated because sending STA is leaving (or has left) IBSS or ESS     The access point went offline, deauthenticating the client" or AP went offline, which it did not. (src: http://www.aboutcher.co.uk/2012/07/linu … on-codes/).
    Keep in mind I run my house on the same wifi so if anything went down somebody always tracks me down to fix it. Also my ISP link is not the problem as I was downloading at the same time and not saturating my pipe.  At this point I think it is just easier to run a cable under the house and mount a jack. Ideas?

    Thanks! Read that article several times, but didn't notice that NOTE.
    Note: /etc/profile.d/locale.sh from systemd-sysvcompat or initscripts is necessary to be able to set users' locale correctly
    But why doesn't it have it's own locale.sh file?
    Why should one need to pull it from other package?

  • Moving to systemd - few questions,

    Hi all,
    After the latest update I decided to jump to systemd completely, and have few questions.
    - I used a static IP address set-up within rc.cong previously and wish to carry on, but the wiki regarding the network and systemd isn't very clear - could anyone point me to the right information?
    - I have removed all my daemon from rc.conf at the exception of "xinetd"  simply because I cannot find the name of the service to be enable.
    - I am running squid on the computer and after checking the booting time it seems to take forever - is there a way to load service in the background like "@" previously or checking which order those service are starting (I have the feeling squid is trying to load before the network has started)
    - Is there a way to use systemd to start application at boot time, like pyLoad (download manager)?
    Looking forward for your replies,
    Regards,

    I won't be able to comment on everything, but here are my 2¢:
    sweetthdevil wrote:I used a static IP address set-up within rc.cong previously and wish to carry on, but the wiki regarding the network and systemd isn't very clear - could anyone point me to the right information?
    If I recall correctly, networking in rc.conf is deprecated. You should switch to netcfg.
    I have removed all my daemon from rc.conf at the exception of "xinetd"  simply because I cannot find the name of the service to be enable.
    What daemons did you have running before? Also, a "pacman -Ql <package> | grep service$" should list all service files belonging to a package. A common gotcha: There's not explicit dbus service file, dbus is at the heart of systemd and gets started automatically.
    I am running squid on the computer and after checking the booting time it seems to take forever - is there a way to load service in the background like "@" previously or checking which order those service are starting (I have the feeling squid is trying to load before the network has started)
    Systemd is, by default, "aggressively parallelized". The service file shipped with squid starts as soon as the network is available (due to the line "After=network.target"). You might want to read up on service files and targets (man systemd.service/systemd.unit/systemd.target) if you want to customize that.
    Is there a way to use systemd to start application at boot time, like pyLoad (download manager)?
    If you want to run pyLoad as its own user, just enable the service file shipped with it:
    # systemctl enable pyload.service
    If you want it to run at the start of your own user session, I'm afraid you'll have to wait a while—systemd for the user session is not yet ready for prime time.

  • Plain user and systemd: dependency failed for local file system

    I tried to switch to systemd, but ended up in a maintenance console (Enter root password or Ctrl-D to continue):
    Enter password.
    journalctl -b as suggested yields "Dependency failed for local file system".
    I couldn't find a systemd troubleshooting page in the Wiki. So, can someone point me to such a page? Anyone willing to give some hints?
    What I did so far: Did what https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd tells one should do to switch to systemd.
    In the boot menu pressed e, moved one down to the line starting with "kernel", pressed e again, and appended init=/bin/systemd.
    Somewhere I read that "mkinitcpio -p linux" should be issued to make systemd work. No (positive) effects.
    Paul
    P.S.: Shouldn't there be a topic "systemd" in "Pacman Upgrades, Packaging & AUR"?

    According to the wiki you are supposed to append init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd if you are using the "Mixed systemd/sysvinit/initscripts installation" mode.  In all other configurations you should NOT have an init=.... entry since init becomes a symlink to systemd
    As far as I know, the init= entry doesn't hurt anything - it just isn't necessary.
    EDIT: Of course, it will hurt if the path was wrong...
    Also, at least on my system, /bin/systemd symlinks to /usr/lib/systemd/systemd.

  • [systemd] Requiring authentication for shutdown/reboot

    I have completed most of my migration to systemd but am still running init scripts. I am having an issue where I am asked for authentication when I try to shutdown or reboot the computer. This user is in the groups 'wheel' and 'power'.
    It appears that is related to the org.freedesktop.login1.policy PolKit policy. Since this is a laptop I have set "allow_active" to "yes" for both shutdown and reboot, however I am still asked to authenticate. My policy file and my logind.conf for systemd: https://gist.github.com/4154750
    Also, in order to perform the shutdown I am using gnome-session-quit launched from an XMonad shortcut.

    Active=no so I guess I am not in an Active Session. What does that mean?
    And yes I am booting with systemd, adding the appropriate "init=...." to the kernel line.
    EDIT: I am reading the wiki page here - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ConsoleKit so I kind of understand that my session is not properly starting with PolKit
    After migrating to systemd I did "systemctl enable gdm" and was able to get back into my system (the original issue that prompted moving to systemd was that GNOME quit working).
    So my login manager is GDM, my desktop environment is GNOME, and my window manager is XMONAD. Hopefully these details will help get me on track.
    thanks

  • Bluetooth audio sink no longer available in PulseAudio after systemd

    I've done a long overdue and mostly smooth update to systemd, but I can't get PA to use my Bluetooth speakers anymore. I followed the instructions on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd and removed myself from all groups other than users.
    Bluetooth itself seems to be working fine, I was able to re-pair and connect to the audio sink, but it doesn't show up as an output in pavucontrol. The device name does show up in the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, with the option to switch between A2DP and Off profiles, but fiddling with that doesn't do anything either. What did I break?
    Edit: nothing shows up for the bluetooth device in /dev/snd either.

    Try shutting down your Mac and then unplugging it (completely) for about 30 seconds.  Then plug it in and power it back up.
    This does what's called an "SMC reset" and will often resolve issues around AirPort and Bluetooth hardware of this nature.

  • Help create systemd .service file for Teeworlds server

    Hi there.
    I maintain one package the provide server for the game Teeworlds (teeworlds-zcatch in AUR). I'd like to have a ".service" file to be able to run the server in background, maybe even in startup, and saving the log (it send some stuff to stdout that could be nice to keep). However I don't know how to make a ".service" script. Could somene create a script or point me out to informations about it?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi.

  • How to move the custom hooks in /etc/rc.d/functions.d to systemd

    I have a few scripts placed in /etc/rc.d/functions.d that were launched during the boot process.
    Now I moved to systemd but I have not found any documentation about how to implement those hooks in the new boot process. As far as I got I need to write customs .service files, but again I lack of infos about how..
    Can anybody teach me a bit about this or link some documentation?
    Many thanks

    Ok, I think I need some help here.
    I want to call the acpi_call kernel module to switch off the nvidia discrete card at boot. Usually I did that with
    # echo '\_SB.PCI0.PEG1.GFX0._ON' > /proc/acpi/call
    I wrote the following /etc/systemd/system/nvidia_off.service:
    [Unit]
    Description=acpi_call to switch off nvidia discrete graphic
    [Service]
    Type=simple
    ExecStart=/bin/echo '\_SB.PCI0.PEG1.GFX0._OFF' > /proc/acpi/call
    ExecStop=/bin/echo '\_SB.PCI0.PEG1.GFX0._ON' > /proc/acpi/call
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    but testing with:
    #systemctl start nvidia_off.service
    #systemctl stop nvidia_off.service
    seems no effective. No output is produced but there is no effect on the power consumption which should be several watts lower.
    I also take a look at sysctl but it seems to control only /proc/sys/anything while my module is under /proc/acpi
    Any suggestion?
    thanks in advance

  • Managing WPA wireless with systemd-networkd ?

    Hi guys,
    I've moved to systemd-networkd to manage my wired interface.
    http://dabase.com/blog/Good_riddance_netctl/
    Has anyone successfully managed to get their /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf working through  systemd-networkd too?

    WonderWoofy wrote:
    Okay, so I'll walk you through this since there is really not a whole lot of documentation on the subject.  This assumes that your NIC is wlan0, your SSID is MyNetwork, and the password is SuperSecretPassphrase.
    You need to create a wpa_supplicant-wlan0.conf.  So use wpa_passphrase to generate one:
    # wpa_passphrase MyNetwork SuperSecretPassphrase > /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant-wlan0.conf
    Enable it so that it runs on boot:
    # systemctl enable [email protected]
    Now make a file at /etc/systemd/network/00-wireless-dhcp.network (it can really be named whatever you want):
    [Match]
    Name=wlan0
    [Network]
    DHCP=yes
    Now ensure that systemd-networkd.service is enabled.
    # systemctl enable systemd-networkd.service
    Reboot, and it should be working.
    Edit: cleanup
    Edit2: Okay, that is not working for me either...
    Edit3: Okay nevermind, I just made a typo and named my file 00-wireless-dhcp.ntwork
    Edit4: I forgot to mention that you also need to ensure that /etc/resolv.conf is a symlink to /run/systemd/network/resolv.conf.  As a hack (since I don't use systemd-networkd regularly) I have the following:
    $ cat /etc/systemd/system/systemd-networkd.service.d/resolv.conf
    [Service]
    ExecStartPost=/usr/bin/ln -sf /run/systemd/network/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf
    ExecStopPost=/usr/bin/rm /etc/resolv.conf
    ExecStopPost=/usr/bin/touch /etc/resolv.conf
    This needs to go to the wiki!

  • [SOLVED] Test conversion to systemd - Help with iptables status

    With all the discussion around systemd and with a move for systemd to [core] soon, I thought I would convert an arch laptop from initscripts to systemd and see how it worked.
    I followed the advice on the arch wiki for systemd, having already moved the systemd compatible parameters out of rc.conf a while ago. After installing systemd and systemd-arch-units, and adding init=/bin/systemd to the boot kernel line the system booted up nicely with systemd - graphical login failed as the relevant unit is not enabled at that stage - so hitting return to get a login prompt and logging as root it was quick to enable graphical.target and kdm.service, and rebooting then gave me a normal kdm login screen and then a normal login to kde.
    All fine at this point. (By the way total login time was just over 30 seconds for both initscripts and systemd) - then it was necessary to check which services were running - most were running by default under systemd including postfix, dovecot, and sound worked fine with a quick check on a browser for a video feed. Networking was working fine too.
    However iptables which was previously working fine under initscripts was not running - I checked that the firewall rules file was intact which is was.  Executing systemctl enable iptables.service appeared to be accepted but after executing systemctl start iptables.service and checking status again it was "exited" - the commands listed under the "start" command seemed normal and no error message appeared in the /var/log/messages file about iptables.
    Can anyone suggest what is needed to get iptables working under systemd (yes I have read the wiki entries but nothing seemed to be relevant to fixing that particular issue).
    Thanks in advance.

    cfr wrote:
    I think what you're seeing is normal. Does it give a 0 exit status?
    The service is of type "oneshot". I *think* that means that it is expected to exit.
    As I understand it, iptables is a bit like ipfw. It's in the kernel and the userspace tools just provide an interface to that. So there's no daemon to run.
    You can tell if it has worked correctly by
    iptables --list
    to check that your rules have been loaded correctly.
    Note: I hope somebody will quickly correct me if I'm wrong about this because I've been assuming this is the expected behaviour on my own machine!
    Perfectly correct - I didn't think to check iptables --list but yes all the rules are there as they should be.
    It would be nice to have this documented in the wiki under systemd to help anyone else coming across the same issue.
    I will mark this as solved in the topic title - thank you for replying - it was very helpful (and stopped me continuing the search for a solution by googling!)

  • Kdm.service for systemd doesn't exist

    In wiki, it says:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd wrote:

    But there is only a gdm.service in /usr/lib/systemd/system, no kdm.service.

    OK, It is coming soon.
    There is no kdm.service:

  • [SOLVED]Systemd: removing quiet in kernel parameters

    Hello
    I am configuring systemd according to systemd's page in the Archlinux's wiki:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd
    I have a doubt about the first point in the suplementary information section. This one says:
    If you have quiet in your kernel parameters, you might want to remove it for your first couple of systemd boots, to assist with identifying any issues during boot
    Does it mean I must remove the word quiet in the section GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, in the file /etc/default/grub?
    Thanks in advance.
