Archlinux stops working

Hello all, new user to Arch Linux here, with an odd issue.  I installed Arch, fluxbox, and slim with just a few bumps here and there, and everything worked great.  I then installed CUPS and the driver for my Brother MFC 295 CN printer following the instructions in the wiki, and printed out a test page, and suddenly, fluxbox stopped responding.  I can move the mouse around, but that's it.  I can't move windows around, I can't type anything, nothing works.  This happens whenever I log in to the OS.  I can hit ctrl+alt+f2 to escape to a terminal, but that's not useful to me.  Wondering if anyone else has experienced an issue like this?  As I said this only started after I installed the driver for my printer.

The issue is that I was not aware of what the problem was.  From my perspective, the last thing I did was to install the printer driver, and then it stopped responding.  The fact that I could move the mouse and also escape to a terminal should have been a clue, perhaps, however, for all I know, it could have been an issue with those drivers that prevented my xterm window from receiving my keyboard input.

  • Sound stopped working

    Hi.
    It used to work.
I have problem with sound. Yesterday It does work, but today it stopped working. I'm not sure if it is because of some updates, I haven't noticed anything connected to sound. The only difference is that I uninstalled mplayer2. Then it stopped working - but I'm not sure if it was because of this.
    I tried:
    reinstall alsa, alsa-plugins, alsa-utils, vlc, mplayer2
    install pulseaudio, oss (without configuration)
    reboot
    unmute all chanels in alsamixer
    connecting headphones
    aplay -L

Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

Same for me after system upgrade on 2013-05-01:
    pacmatic -Syu
Since then, no Audio output via HDMI anymore. Mainboard is Intel DH67BL.
Before upgrade, it worked. Audio via normal audio connector also still works.
    $ aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Wiedergabe: WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate: 48000 Hz, mono
But on the connected (via HDMI) TV is nothing to hear. Video on TV via HDMI works. Checked also alsamixer volume setting.
With this, I hear the sound on the speakers connected with the Mainboard:
    $ aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Wiedergabe: WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate: 48000 Hz, mono
    $ aplay -l

I've read this, but did not help:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ta … chitecture
Here the list of upgraded packages:
    grep 2013-05-01.*pgraded /var/log/pacman.log
    http://pastebin.com/vXjp3Bw4
I also downgraded to the kernel version before upgrade:
    pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-3.7.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
But that did not solve the problem. Also using linux-lts kernel did not help.

  • Suspend to ram stopped working with Acer Aspire 5930G - Arch64

Suspend to ram recently stopped working on my laptop running Arch64. When ever I press the suspend to ram button in kde4 simply nothing happens, no screen flashing or error messages of any kind. I tried to install the pm-utils package and run pm-suspend, but with the same result. The program just ran and nothing happened and no feedback, not even in dmesg.

in the future, i would definately use yaourt to upgrade since it displays better what is being updated and from where.
edit: if pm-suspend fails, check its log (/var/log/pm-suspend.log)

  • Dual screen configuration makes keyboard stop working on X

Hi. My computer is working just fine. And my video card has two outputs (Nvidia[GeForce 9600 GT] (rev a1)). I got a second monitor, and I was trying to configure Xorg to use the two of them in a dual screen configuration.
I tried creating the 10-monitors.conf file like described in  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … e_monitors, and here is what happens. X does use the two monitors, and I can even see my mouse pointer moving from one to the other. But then my keyboard stops working, and so do the mouse keys, only moving the mouse around works.
I have the impression this is related to the missing InputDevices in the ServerLayout. Something in my configuration probably needs that still, if the ServerLayout gets explicitly configured. What should I do? Could this be related to HAL somehow? How do I turn off HAL without it trying to kill me?
    Thanks.

I have been using nvidia's TwinView for a long time, currently with two different monitor sizes. There is no need to do anything with udev if you have your xorg.conf set up properly. Here's what mine looks like, though you will have to adapt it according to your hardware.

It is best to let as much as possible be handled automatically, but getting two screens working properly requires a bit of tweaking.

  • [SOLVED] DNS stops working

    Hi!
I'm running arch64 on my Thinkpad x220 and have a strange problem here.
Sometimes DNS just stops working, to rule out a bad Server I tried it with the one of Google:
    dig @8.8.8.8 archlinux.puzzle.ch
On Archlinux dig tells me that no servers could be reached, although I can successfully ping 8.8.8.8.
Running MacOSX on another machine in the same network, dig gives me back the matching a-record.
This usually lasts from a few minutes up to about two hours, only on archlinux. Does somebody have any idea on this?
Last edited by simt (2011-12-22 18:39:27)

You are right, the manpage says 'dig @server query' but it seems to work either way. Maybe you can try 'tcptraceroute 8.8.8.8 53', it will probe tcp port 53 directly, although not the same as a "normal" dns query that will use udp [1] it will be quite close.

thanks for your answer. I did not have anything in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
In any case: for some reason it's working again without problems.

  • USB scanner stopped working after PC upgrade

I have HP Officejet 4500 all in one printer. It has both USB and ethernet connections.
This week I have upgraded all PC components (so everything is new) except SSD drive so that I was able to continue where I stopped working.
However, my USB connection with printer stopped working.
First of all, I need to say, that I had to make scanner working over ethernet, so now my printer/scanner works without USB, but:
    1. what may be the reason to stop USB connection working?
scanimage -L has usually expected output:
    scanimage -L
    device `hpaio:/usb/Officejet_4500_G510g-m?serial=CN141F219005CQ' is a Hewlett-Packard Officejet_4500_G510g-m all-in-one
    but sometimes:
    scanimage -L
    and sometimes:
    scanimage -L
    device `hpaio:/usb/Officejet_4500_G510g-m?serial=0' is a Hewlett-Packard Officejet_4500_G510g-m all-in-one
When I try to scan over USB:
    scanimage --format=tiff > test.tiff
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/usb/Officejet_4500_G510g-m?serial=CN141F219005CQ failed: Invalid argument
    sometimes it stucks and sometimes:
    scanimage --format=tiff > test.tiff
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/usb/Officejet_4500_G510g-m?serial=0 failed: Invalid argument
I have tried all steps on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Scanner site. I remind, that on the old PC it was working correctly. The problem appeared after upgrade.
    2. The output of lsusb is:

I don't have any such problem with rear USB.
All other USB devices work with front USBs. (wireless mouse, USB external HDD, USB CD/DVD, bluetooth dongle).
Can anybody explain me these issues please?
    Thanks a lot.

The cable is quite long. It has about 1,5m. Unfortunatelly, I don't have another cable to test it. Strange is, it was working before....

  • USB audio DAC stops working after suspend

I didn't update my mediacenter running arch for a few months so I figured i'd reinstall it because of the filesystem, /lib and grub changes. Now after reinstalling I'm running into the issue that my USB audio DAC stops working after a suspend.
After a suspend speaker-test gives me the following error:
    [user@mediacenter ~]$ speaker-test -c 2
    speaker-test 1.0.25
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1068:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -77,File descriptor in bad state
I've tried replugging my DAC and restarting ALSA, without any success. I have to reboot to get sound again.

Yes I am suspecting the kernel as well. I'll try to change some options in XBMC to maybe get this working, and if not I'll see how far I can downgrade with the kernel. My last installation was a few months old so I hope it broke not that long ago.
    Thanks for the help

  • SSD suddenly stopped working

    Hello everybody.
I do have a very strange problem with my SSD (Samsung 840 EVO 250GB). A longe time ago, almost a year I replaced my SuperDrive with an OpticalBay. Bought a new SSD. I put the SSD in the original drive place and placed the HDD drive inside the optical bay. Also I made the SSD my startup drive. Everything did worked perfect for almost a year!
But suddenly my SSD did stopped working in my macbook (Macbook Pro 13" early 2011). I did try both drive places in the macbook, but still the SSD didn't work. Also when I tried to use the SSD with an exern cable via the USB it didn't work. My macbook doesn't recognize the SSD. Strange thing is, my HDD still works on everyplace! So there is nothing wrong with the inside cables I think?
Yes... the SSD is broken. BUT! When I try the SSD on another Macbook or PC it is working PERFECT! Also some very deep SSD test and the samsung magician test both say there is NOTHING wrong with the SSD. And also another brand new SSD doen't work inside or outside (USB) on my macbook.
I did try to format the SSD and install again. But no results.
    Don't know whats wrong???
Hope someone can help me here.
    Thank you all!

    Do you have gparted's log?
If not, boot a liveCD and show us parted's list output for the drive.
Does anybody know what could happen during the repartitioning process?
Partitions could overlap, extend beyond the boundries, have been destroyed, the partition table could've been corrupted, goblins could've stolen your 0s, but left the 1s, etc. Wild speculation is pretty pointless without any evidence to base it on.
Thank you for your quick response.
Well, right now I'm working on Arch Linux which is booted from my USB stick (it is a copy of my SSD). Unfortunately I can not provide the logs because it was GParted live CD.
I managed to boot ArchLinux (USB stick) without even touching the SSD and it's still plugged.
Here you can see Gparted's list output for the SSD.
As you can see the partition table looks fine but I'm still afraid of mounting any of them because my PC will freeze and I will have to pull the plug again... It happens every time.

  • [SOLVED] Thinkpad Fn keys suddenly stopped working

I'm on ThinkPad Edge 14. For some reason(s) unknown, my Fn keys stopped working after I restarted Arch a few hours ago.
I've checked the BIOS, everything is fine (no settings unchanged). I tried checking if X (I'm on Gnome 3) can still detect the keys using xev (as outlined here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ex … oard_Keys) and the Fn key is detected as "XF86WakeUp" witht the keycode "151", so at least nothing is wrong with the actual physical button.
What's more weird is that, I tried booting from another Hard Drive into Ubuntu, and the Fn key also didn't work (it has worked fine previously). What could be causing this?
EDIT: Even weirder, Fn keys aren't working in Windows as well (I dual boot). BIOS's still unchanged, and this started happening when I was working with Arch, so I'm quite sure this can be fixed through Arch. Problem is, I don't know where to start. How can Arch affect Ubuntu & Windows when I didn't change BIOS?

    I found out the problem!
I tried checking the Lenovo forums about the problem and found this: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Ed … d-p/323077
Apparently, it's possible that the Fn keys suddenly stopped working for no clear reason. In my case, it happened when I was on Arch, so I thought the problem was with Arch. Anyway, I updated the BIOS from Lenovo's site and everything's working fine now.
    Thanks!

Asked on the Aria2 forum: pending the "--async-dns=false" option and it worked.

  • Amarok stopped working after update

Hi, after the recent amarok update amarok stopped working.
Now when I try to start it i get a window with a loading bar that says "Updating system configuration" and after a few seconds an error message appears saying that "Amarok can't find any collection plugin... etc" and the KDE crash window appears. The crash reason seems to be a Segmentation fault.
I tried cleaning the amarok configuration files and directory in the .kde4 directory without success.
    What happened to amarok?

  • Control key stopped working in my tigervnc sessions [SOLVED]

Recently, the ctrl key (for example ctrl+F) stopped working when I connect to a vncserver running tigervnc... anyone else?  Must be something recent package-wise because it has always worked in the past.
On the server, I run simply:
    % cat ~/.vnc/xstartup
    #!/bin/sh
    exec startlxde
    To start the server:
    % vncserver -geometry 1792x1008 -alwaysshared

The culprit is fltk-1.3.3-1... downgrading to 1.3.2-5 and restarting the vncserver fixes the problem.
