ArcInfo and ArcSDE / Oracle Spatial

Hello,
I saw some discussion on ArcInfo and Oracle Spatial and thought of asking this question.
I have ArcInfo software,some ArchInfo boundary Files that need to be loaded into ArcSDE and Oracle Spatial.
I want to convert ArcInfo boundary files into ArcSDE format.
I want to send ArcSDE export dump so that it can be imported into ArcSDE licenced server elsewhere.
For doing this work do I need ArcSDE as I am not going to use ArcSDE. I want to just convert ArcInfo files into ArcSDE and send it.
Any suggestions are welcome.

This is a very interesting topic, I have never seen or read a detailed comparison of the functionality within ArcSDE and Oracle Locator/Spatial. I have worked with both of these for five years or more, and if this comparison was made using the most current versions of these products, it is my opinion that these are fuctionally equivalent. Fundamentally, they differ in how spatial analysis is performed, Oracle Spatial uses Max Egenhoffers model, while ArcSDE implements the Clementini operators. When comparing ESRI's implementation of "versioning" with Oracle's Workspace Manager, I think Workspace Manager is a superior design, and has more flexibility/fuctionality. Besides, it is more open to choices in client applications, since the long transactions are part of the database, rather than the client application (ArcInfo Desktop). What is missing in Workspace Manager is a Java API.
In general, the SDO_GEOMETRY scales better for large databases than using LONG_RAW (SDEBINARY).
Thats my $0.02 worth. I just recieved a copy of MapInfo Professional 8.0, and they claim to support long transactions in Oracle. Will investigate.

Oracle Spatial and Oracle Forms

Hi,
Does anyone have experience with Oracle Spatial and Oracle Forms?
I have generated a form, which is based on a view. The view uses the mdsys.sdo_relate operator. Somehow I am unable to get the form to perform (to get one record it takes over 20 minutes). While useing sql-navigator to process the same statement it seems no problem. The query that also uses the view, is then processed in 10 seconds.
I also noticed that when text-functions like ' lower' of ' upper' are used to query the view, the query is processed within 15 seconds. If I don't use ' lower' or ' upper' it takes a long time (> 20 minutes) to process the query. Is it possible that this causes the bad performance of the form?
On metalink I have found that forms and spatial do not cooperate because of the pl/sql version that
forms6 uses. There is no solution presented, does anyone know of a work around?
My configuration is:
Oracle 8.1.7 on WIN2K @ PIII-800Mhz 256 Mb memory.

1. Book - Pro Oracle Spatial for Oracle Database 11g by r. Kothuri, A. Godfrind, E. Beinat. This book provides a nice introduction on Oracle Spatial concepts and have examples.
2. Look at the Oracle Spatial & Graph User Guide
2. Book - Applying and Extending Oracle Spatial by S. Greener and S. Ravada. This book provides hands on information for advanced oracle spatial application developers. Practical guide on hands-on examples, Data models and develop cross-vendor database solutions.
3. This oracle spatial forum, once you understand these concepts.
In the future consider Certification on Oracle Spatial 11g Certified Implementation Specialist.

Is there a function in Oracle Spatial 11g to move/translate geometry?

I am new to Oracle Spatial. I wanted to know if there is any function to move/translate a geometry in Oracle Spatial 11g? PostGIS has a function named ST_Translate to achieve the same.

Note, that Simon Greener & Siva Ravada have published an excellent book ("Applying and Extending Oracle Spatial") that contains examples (in Chapter 7) of easy to use wrappers for this:

Oracle Spatial is an Enterprise Edition option only, Oracle Locator a free subset available in all editions. Please address licence questions to your sales representative,you won't get here an official answer,what exactly you have to pay.
I don't see any specific hardware issues for Spatial.

Data Retrieval Speed in Oracle Spatial vs. ESRI ArcSDE

I would appreciate any opinions regarding data retrieval
performance between Oracle Spatial and ESRI ArcSDE. Would an end-
user (using ESRI software) experience significant differences in
data retrieval speed depending on how the data were stored in
Oracle (MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY verses ESRI Binary/Blob formats).
Knowing that the ESRI binary formats are tailored to their
software front-end apps (ArcGIS, ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and
ArcInfo), wouldn't this be a "non-issue" until the spatial
dataset gets "large", and even then, wouldn't performance be
(almost) equal if the spatial indexes were created properly?

You can't do that type of query in sql from sql*plus using
SDEBINARY. HOwever, you can perform spatial queries in ArcMap
if you are using SDEBINARY.
You can use the query builder to perform point-in-polygon type
queries.
Hope that helps.
For my two cents, I think SDO_GEOMETRY gives you a more robust
database to work with, because you have the added power of
Oracle Spatial functions. If you are using SDEBINARY you are
limited to only what you can do thru ArcGIS.
If you are concerned more about performance than accessibility,
especially with a large number of users, then SDEBINARY might
be the better choice.
I love Oracle Spatial and am hoping that the performance issue
will not be a serious one when we start putting ArcIMS developed
apps into production.

Creating an Oracle Spatial database in 10g and connecting ArcGIS

I have a set of shapefiles that I want to convert into Oracle Spatial 10g and then be able to view these with the capability of ArcGIS 9 (without using ArcSDE).
From what I've read, I think this could be done by using ODBC. Once that connection is made, will I then be able to use the full functionality of ArcGIS especially read/write functions to edit the information in Oracle Spatial?
What data formats does Oracle Spatial in 10g support. I am concerned about raster data, CAD data, Survey data etc

The shape files can be loaded into Oracle spatial using shp2sdo.exe available on web.To view the GIS data in ArcGIS ,ArcGIS needs the layers to be registered.Therefore you need Arcsde for registering the layers.But for viewing the data in Arcgis we do not need arcsde ,we can view the data using direct connect.For editing the data we can use ODBC connection.
About raster data,we can load tiff,jpeg,bmp,png,gif using georaster tools provided by oracle into georaster tables.

Oracle spatial 11g - 3D-Geometry and KML-Export

I'm currently working with an Oracle Spatial 11g - database and there with 2d- and 3d-geometries. With this Version you can extrude 2d's to 3d's and calculate their volumes. This works fine.
The problem is to save the extruded areas as 3d-geometries in a specific table. Enclosed you will find the SQL-Code of the current workflow:

This works fine so far. Now I wanna insert the extruded geometry (now 3D) in the table ta_3dgeb. All my attempts were in vain...

Then I tried to change something on the metadata and spatial indices, wihtout success. Does anyone has advices to solve the problem??
Afterwards I would like to export the 3d-geometry in a KML file to visualize it in Google Earth. Therefore oracle provides a tool. But I didn't managed it to export the geometry. Any hints for the KML export or are there any other tools alternatively??

Extrude does not automatically populate the SRID for the resulting geometry as there may not be a 3D equivalent of the 2D SRID defined
in the DB.
So the extruded geometry comes out without the SRID. In your case, since you are creating an index on the ta_3dgeb table
before inserting the extruded data, it is causing this failure.
So drop the index on the ta_3dgeb table and do the inserts into it.
Then you can manually update the geometries with the SRID if there is a corresponding 3D SRID for 31468.
Otherwise, you can use 31468.

Oracle 10.1.0.4 SDO_GEOMETRY and ArcSDE 9.1 SP1

We are having a few of issues that I'm hoping someone can shed some light on.
1) In SDE.SPATIAL_REFERENCES table when using SDO_GEOMETRY is it normal to get two instances of a spatial reference one with the ESRI coord sys string and one with the Oracle coord sys string?
2) When zooming in on the sdo_geometry layers some features are not displayed. We have rebuilt the spatial index and analyzed the table with no change. Any other suggestions?
3)We ran sdo_validate_layer_with_context on the above layer and it returned a number of entries with incorrect rotation. Is this the cause of the disappearing features - if so is there a function to automatically reorder the coordinates? If loading from sde to sdo_geometry is this a normal issue?
4)We are having issues loading data from sde to sdo_geometry that includes true curves. It's strange but if the geometry count (number of rings) is odd then the features will not load. Oracle Spatial supports the curves drawn in ArcGIS right? Has anyone else seen this issue?

I had problems with your number 1 and 2. You should submit a support request to esri. Refer to the SDO parameters in the dbtune table for problem 1.
Problem 2 has to do with an oracle bug. I went to 10.1.0.5 to fix that bug #4258825. I would submit a tar and an esri support request for this problem also.After the upgrade there is a suggested spatial index rebuild also.

Best method to move data from ArcSDE to Oracle Spatial/Mapviewer environment?

If ArcGIS Geodatabase is the standard data store for GIS data, but business IT wants to make use of an Oracle Spatial/Mapviewer environment, what is the best practices recommended approach for interfacing between the two data stores. (perhaps this is an Oracle Spatial question, but tools exist here as well.)

Yes, This question is more suited for the Oracle Spatial Forum.
And about the question, you must use Esri's owns products like ArcCatalog or Arcmap to connect to oracle and change the format of your geometries. Arcgis is capable of storing geometrical data in oracle in SDO_Geometry format.
If you have question about the procedure of this action, don't hesitate to ask.

A correction. Logical standby (SQL Apply) doesn't currently natively support spatial data types but sdo_geometry can be supported thru EDS by creating a logging table and two triggers and some manual work. Please check it out from My Oracle Support:

"Extended Datatype Support (EDS) is the ability for SQL Apply to extend support for additional datatypes that are not natively supported yet by SQL Apply. EDS relies on a new capability in Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Patch Set 3 (10.2.0.4) and Oracle Database 11g Release 1 Patch Set 1 (11.1.0.7) that allows triggers to fire on the logical standby database. "

You can only use ttf symbols for markers.
in MapBuilder click on Tools menu, click on Import Truetype font.
Use the mapbuilder that is part of the latest kit on OTN. It contains some fixes for TTF handling.

Oracle spatial, disks and partitions...

Can anyone point me in the direction of some kind of documentation with regards to recommended disk and partition configurations for Oracle Spatial? I'm running Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Oracle 10g. With the recent advances in technology in terms of disk speeds, etc, is there any benefit in splitting the OS, programs, data, indexes, and logs onto separate physical disks, or can I get away with having them on different partitions on the same disk?

Despite the similarity in spelling, spatial ain't that special - its just one of many datatypes that Oracle provides.
I may be wrong, but I wouldn't think there any particular guidelines or recommendations for configuring a database that will contain spatial database as apposed to one that will not.
I suggest you follow general guidelines from the Oracle administrators guide about configuring a database for a particular use - ie. you would configure a OLTP database different to a data warehouse. In particular read the administrators guide and installation guide for your particular operating system.

Reminds me of a story a contractor to an IT department I worked in once told me.
He used to work in Silicon Valley in the '70s and told a story of a company that
hired a particular programmer who was brilliant but unstable. They used to set
up a room with a VT100 and a bottle of Tequila. The programmer would arrive
and set to work. As the Tequila emptied it was replaced. At some point over
the following days or weeks a scream would be heard from the room, followed
by a crash as the VT100 went through the window and the programmer disappeared.
They would replace the window, the VT100, the Tequila and wait till he came back
from "walkabout".
"Extreme Programming" '70s tyle!
OH&S would never allow this nowadays! That, plus Prozac means these sorts
of programmers are probably very rare!
