ARD 3.2.2 client update: new lab problems

I've been using ARD for years to manage my Mac labs. Sometimes it worked well, sometimes it didn't. I even beta tested it once so I am aware it's not Apple's most glorious piece of software.
My latest problems began after updating the clients to 3.2.2 (using ARD, of course). (Clients are running both 10.5.4 and 10.5.5.) I can see the clients in the Scanner list (without the ARD version listed for some reason), activate them in the list (after some difficulty), observe and control them -- but I CANNOT perform the other tasks listed under the Manage menu (copy items, empty trash, restart, etc.). If I attempt to do so, I am told they are Offline (when they obviously are not, since I can observe/control them) and that the task is not supported.
Reinstalling the 3.2.2 client updater manually at a workstation does not fix the problem, nor does repairing permissions. Client settings under the Sharing System Prefs panel are the same as they ever were (ie, I am allowed to do the things I am attempting to do).
I have tried this with ARD admin 3.2.2 from an Intel iMac set up as a Leopard Server, as well as from a station in the lab itself. Same problems.
Other more advanced tricks have been discussed in other threads here, but I have never had to go to those lengths to get ARD to work. IMO the 3.2.2 updater messed something up.
FWIW, here is the results of my permissions repair on a station where I used ARD to update the client:

Hi,
You mentioned the machines are all from a single image. I realize you are an experienced ARD user. However, there are quirks in this app at any stage of development. I'm sure you already applied a unique name to the shared network name and have no DHCP conflicts as well as checked that all the accounts, not just the admin account that permissions are checked. Although you may have all the correct ports addressed and configured, there is no accurate accounting for the gremlins. These play havoc across the network. Sometimes the only thing you can do is go to the machine and walk through the settings as if it was the first time. I can't tell you how many times a problem has resolved itself after just logging into the admin and redoing the settings. I mean the exact settings that are already selected. Sometimes the settings were actually wrong, even ones that came from an identical image. Like forgetting to select the observe and control selections in the sharing options for all the users. Other times it was simply deselecting and reselecting the options and restarting that snapped the machine out of the funk.
Aside from the occasional discovery of admin setup issues, I live by the motto "the simplest solutions are usually the best, and should be tried first". Glitches do happen though. Sometimes running the scanner and reselecting and dragging the same machine into your user lists can refresh a connection that is not acting properly. I have detected countless quirks that cause strange side effects. Do a get info on the specific machine and delete the IP, then make sure you have the "name".local in the DNS name field. Re-enter the admin or try a user account name in this experiment and test this. This has given me clues to setup issues before having to go to the machine. I know this stuff sounds simplistic but it has solved most of my issues.
Good Luck

Unless you installed the ARD administration application on the computers yourselves, all they'll have is the client. The ARD admin app is not included with Macs; it must be purchased from the Mac App Store. If you did for some reason install the ARD admin app, just remove it.

  • Guild Wars 2 client updating on Windows 7 Boot Camp

I originally downloaded and installed Guild Wars 2 client and updated with no problem. I've played the game and everything ran fine. I wanted to make a larger partition for my windows, so I went through the entire process of deleting the windows partition and creating a new one and then installing windows 7 Home Premium on it. After the clean install I downloaded the Guild Wars 2 client just fine, but when it attempts to update, it only updates for about 4 seconds to around 1MB of data. I use a direct ethernet connection The error says "Download Failed! Please check your internet connection and try again." The update continually builds off of the download so I'm almost done downloading the whole update (16GB) but it shouldn't have any problems maintaining it's connection. I have no firewall on and no antivirus even installed since i'm not using this computer for anything else until I figure out the problem. I tried other games to see if it was an overall problem, but I can update and play The Secret World and Tera with zero problems as well as other offline games that require patches like Dragon Age 2 and Sniper Elite V2. It can't be something simple since I've already contacted my ISP to make sure there was no throttling or blocks on their end and I've been contacting Arenanet technical support and they don't have any ideas for windows boot camp issues.
Any ideas on what could be the issue? The common firewall, antivirus, and ISP possibilities have been troubleshot to death.

you should be using Microsoft Security Essentials, regardless, or something for firewall besides your router, though that should be doing some of the work.
Windows on Mac aka "Boot Camp" is just to partition and motherboard drivers, otherwise it is maybe 95% same as a PC (sans BIOS for EFI).
You could of course bought WinClone or Paragon CampTuneX $20 to resize the old partitions.
Download managers and torrent-type with what ports it uses etc are not my area (torrents are funny, your IP address is out there for all to see and find which is one reason to not turn off firewalls and everything).

  • Print servers for 30 client Mac Mini Lab

I have a 30 client Mac Mini lab with printing done by 2 networked HP Officejet 8600+ printers w/ 128mb memory.  I would like to have a print server that will speed up the printing(kindergarteners can be impatient).  A dozen years or so ago there were separate print servers that managed print requests and gave you only 1 queue to keep track of, but I haven't found one lately for 10.5.  Will simply routing print requests to our current document server(PowerMac, Intel 2, 500gb) and giving it the 8600s' IP addresses give me the speed boost I need?

Okay, I have been able to recreate the error message by changing the Security Options for the Windows print queue (located in Properties > Ports > Configure Port). By default, the printer queue is set to use an anonymous account for the connection. When I changed the setting to use the "Windows logon name and password", I would get the error "Returning IPP client-error-not-authorized for Print-Job". This message was found in the cups error log, the print queue did not show an error - simply the job would not appear in the print queue and therefore there was no print.
The only problem I then encountered was when I changed the setting back to use the anonymous account, the error continued to occur - again only showing in cups. The only way I could resolve this was to delete the Windows queue, reset the printing system on the Mac and re-add the Canon printer (in my case an iP6000D). Then when I added the printer again on Win7 using the Bonjour Printer Wizard, I was able to print without error.
So, I suggest you first check that the anonymous account is being used on the Vista PC. If it is, then remove the Windows queue and reset the printing system on the Mac. To reset the printing system, Control-click on the Print & Fax > Printer list and select the reset pop-up. This will delete the Mac queue but not the driver. Now you can add the printer again on the Mac and once that is complete, go back to the PC and add the printer again.
One final note. My printer is using v10.26.x of the Canon driver. Version 10.19 was part of the default 10.6.0 install and can be updated to the same v10.26 by downloading the Canon Printer Driver Update v2.2.

The serial number was included in the box ARD came in; the Apple Store will not have a record of it. If you've lost the serial number, you'll need to purchase a new copy of ARD, probably a good idea anyway since 2.2 won't run on any version of Mac OS X since, if memory serves, 10.4. It's a lot cheaper through the Mac App Store than it was back when you first purchased.

  • Remote Desktop Client Update 3.7.0

I'm using a 2012 MacBook Pro with OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5. When I visited the Mac App Store today, there was an Apple software update available for download - Remote Desktop Client Update 3.7.0. I don't own or use Apple Remote Desktop and to my knowledge, it's not installed on my mac in any way. Has this happened to any other non-users of Apple Remote Desktop?

The Apple Remote Desktop CLIENT is part of the operating system and present on every mac.  If you haven't engaged Remote Management in the System Preferences/Sharing pane, it can't be used.  But it CAN be updated!  Hence the message.
The ARD administrative package used to control a client is not on every mac and is something that must be purchased.  But to control other computers the client software must be there, so Apple just has it as part of the OS in case you ever need it.

  • AirPort Client Update 2009-002 Connection Lost

I just installed the AirPort Client Update 2009-002 and now when my computer goes to sleep it loses the internet connection. It reconnects when it awakes from sleep but I need the connection to stay alive even when the computer is in sleep mode.
Was something wrong before or is something wrong now? How can I get the old functionality back? I've looked for an option but can't find anything. Thanks for your help!

I think I'm having the exact same problem, so I'm posting here instead of starting a new topic.
Before a few days ago I was only using a PB G4 with 10.4.11 and an Airport Extreme 801.11n and didn't have any troubles with this set up. I could close the Powerbook, open it up later and almost immediately have access to my wifi. Or, I could leave it open and it would maintain a connection even when no activity (by me, physically) was going on.
I recently got a new MBP (and thus 10.6, which I updated to 10.6.2). If I close the MBP, putting it to sleep, and then open it, I can not access my network. I get the connection timeout message you mentioned. But here's the thing, I also can't get online with my older Powerbook.
I also also tried this: having both side by side and working. I close the MBP, leaving the PB open. I wait a few minutes and try reloading a page on the PB and it says I'm not connected and it refuses to connect.
The only solution I've found so far seems to be to pull the power plug out of the base station, plug it in, and wait a minute or two. I'm then able to access my wifi again.
Did the software update somehow mess with my base station? It's running version 7.3.2.
Do I need to trash some setting? Do I need to tweak some network setting in 10.6 that I don't know about?
I wish I knew if I was having the problems in the few hours between using 10.6 out of the box and updating to 10.6.2 (and a few other things), but I don't think I ever put it to sleep during that time.

  • Airport client update

I notice a new airport client update out, and is says it is for early MBP's 2008. Software Update doesn't want to see it. Any ideas what models this is for really?

Software update doesn't see it. I am assuming that SU is what would tell me if I needed it (meaning this is isn't something that is user decided). I have an Early 2008 MBP 15", but SU doesn't see it at all. I do have 10.5.8 installed.

  • ARD "Beachballing" constantly after iTunes update

I installed the iTunes update that came out a couple of days ago and ever since I have had constant and continuous problems with ARD going BEACHBALL.  It seems to work for a few seconds to minutes and then freeze up with the beachball.  I have to do a forced quit of ARD but then, as soon as I open ARD it is back to the beachball.  A restart of the computer does not help.  Deleting all the ARD related plists does not do anything to eliminate the problem.
Prior to the update, I would get an ocassional beachball, maybe once in two or three weeks but now it is, at best, every few minutes I try to use it.
The system is a Mac Pro running 10.6.8 Server with 8 Gig RAM.  Ard is 3.5.1 and clients are either 10.5.8 (PPC systems) or 10.6.8 Intel systems.  It does not seem to matter which system I am trying to control or get a report or send a Unix command to.  ARD just quits and beacballs.  I have not found anything that I can tie into the freezing.
Attached are some of the Logs.  If anyone has an idea of how to "deflate this beachball" I would be greatly apprecative.

I just tried all the "standard" things.  Repair Permissions on Server, Repair permissions on several clients then tried ARDing into these clients, Delete ARD and (almost) all of its associated plists, reinstall ARD and update to 3.51 which is where it was when the problem started.  Did a repair disk but no problems were found, cleaned as many old files off the desktop, documents and download folders as I could, emptied the Trash, checked for updates on all programs and drivers not just the Apple Software Update, but also Firefox Chrome, Flip4Mac, Fetch, and every other third party program I could not remove because of them being used very often, trashed all third party programs I could afford to lose, permissions repairs again, Ran network test (Ping) from OS X 10.6.8 Server that hosts my ARD to several different clients to see if there may have been packets being dropped,  ran Network tests from ARD reports with no problems.
I think that is about all the "standard" things other than deleting and re-installing the 10.6.X server and updating to 10.6.8  I just did not want to get into that particular can of worms since having the server off line for any significant time would cause other problems.  (My backup server was dropped and relegated to being used for testing Lion  (That was a mess till 10.7.2 was released!).  The things listed are not necessarily in order since I can't recall exactly what the order was.
Like I said, during the time all these things were being done, ARD would go into "Beachball Mode" with no discernable evidence of why.
One thing I did try was to let ARD just sit for maybe a half-hour after being opened before actually tryiung to use it.  At first I thought that was the cure, since it worked sort of Ok for a day but the next time I tried it, I was back to beachballing.
Even now I have to do frequent refreshs to try to get a current status whenever I do something to the clients since the status shown is not the actual status but at least the beachball seems to have bounced on down the road and is not showing up like it used to.

  • What exactly is the Remote Desktop Client Update

    ?

If you're not being managed by another Mac that has ARD, then you don't need the client update. If you plan on managing other Macs with ARD then you need to buy the admin software.

  • Reverting from AirPort Client Update 2009-002 to anything else.

I never update Airport because it seems every time I do, something goes a miss. Everything was perfect, no issues at all. By mistake, I did update to Airport Update 2009-02.
Now connections randomly drop to AP, can't disable WiFi, when it does reconnect have to force IP renew, then moments later connection drops again.
I want to revert. Yes, I know, there is no way to do that.
    I will not accept:
+ Try fussing with my AP (SSID, Security, etc) that's not the problem - the problem is clearly the driver - it worked fine until the dumb update.
+ Try deleting \ adding networks.
    + Archive and Reinstall.
    + TimeMachine restores.
Perhaps there are some files I could extract from the package and replace on my machine?
That's my line of thought.. Any ideas are appreciated, except for the ones excluded above. Thanks

Just extracting the 2009-01 pkg file only has only the IO80211Family.kext file …
If you mean AirPort Client Update 2009-001, it has much more than a single file in it. The installed IO80211Family.kext appears to be a single file, but like many items it is actually a package (a special kind of folder) containing many files.
In Finder, right-click on the installed version in /System/Library/Extensions & choose "Show package contents" to see what I mean. Likewise, you can use Pacifist to fully expand the package contents of the download & see something similar.
Just replacing this file + fixing permissions did not work.
No surprise there -- it is what my "hard way" comment alluded to. To understand why it didn't work, consider first that a package is actually a structured group of related files containing resources designed to work together as a unit. The files often have internal references to one another & other mutual dependencies in their code. Thus, you can't simply substitute one file with another from a different package -- the files won't have fully compatible resources & won't work properly as a unit.
But there is more to it than that. An installer doesn't just replace files. In fact, although the package contents of an installer & the installed package look similar, they are actually quite different. (Comparing the two as suggested above with Pacifist & Finder will show that.) You can think of an installer package as the raw ingredients of the installed package plus the recipe to make it, housekeeping instructions for tidying up beforehand & afterwards, & the resources the process requires to do all of that. (Check the "Resources" tab in Pacifist to show the resource files.)
Often there is even more to it than that. Many OS packages have mutual dependencies on one another, just as their contents do. The "family" name isn't an arbitrary one -- just as with any family there are parents & children in the IO (input/output) extension family. Mixing members of different families leads to conflicts, often ones that interfere with more than the functionality of the 'foreign' member. Apple's software update mechanism & the installers themselves are designed to prevent this mismatch; when you bypass that it is up to you to manually do everything they do if you expect everything to work together without problems.
The root of the problem? The old driver worked, the new one has issues. How much simpler could it be?
As I hope the above makes clear, it isn't as simple as it seems. You can think of the OS as a very complex machine with thousands of precision parts, each of which must be undamaged & compatible with the others. One bad part can cause problems seemingly quite unrelated to its function, making the job of finding & replacing it much less straightforward than you might imagine. And if you don't do that, the damage will spread, especially when you 'overhaul' (update) the machine with new parts but miss the bad one.
That's why you so often see the advice to reinstall the OS. In effect, that replaces the machine with a brand new one with known-good parts, sparing you the usually very tedious task of tracking down & replacing just the original bad part & any others it has damaged.
But you said in the beginning that you don't want to do that. That seriously limits your choices, mostly to those that require substantial knowledge of the OS & its internal interdependencies to achieve success.
In short, it isn't a simple machine. Treating it as if it is won't get the job done.

  • IOS Users with 4/22/2014 client update unable to connect

    Hi all,
I'm going to provide as much information as I can, but i'm by no means an expert on Lync, but I am the person that installed and configured it for our environment. I have had tickets coming in starting on 4/23 from users
that have taken the latest iOS client update reporting that they can no longer connect internally (corporate wifi with no firewalls or ACLs blocking connectivity) or externally over Cellular data. Internally, they are getting a message that the server cannot
be found if they are connected to the corporate wifi network, and lync just sits there trying to connect (Android Clients on over a dozen different models are happy as a clam). Externally, they get a message that the certificate could not be verified. We have
all the latest server side updates installed as of last night when I took the latest cumulative update and everything else on the edge and front end servers. The certificate that is available externally is a Geosign cert (Wildcard) for our external domain
name, and we are using a domain signed cert for the internal connectivity on the edge server. Like wise we are using domain signed certs for the internal stuff on the front end server.
If you want other information please feel free to ask. Everything was working for all clients until this last software update. Also it doesn't matter if they are on 7.0, 7.1, or 7.1.1 if they updated the Lync client it's broken.

Here's the log -- Edited to remove domain name, internal domain name, username, etc

  • ARD 3.5.1 Client not creating users

    Hi,
We have recently purchased ARD 3.5.1 but the client installer is not creating the User we have specified in the create client installer wizard. After some research, there was a post saying that we should add a case for 10.7 in the makeuser file inside the client installer package. I have done that, and it created the user. That seemed to have solved that problem. But, another problem is that ARD will not connect to that client unless remote managment is unchecked and then checked again.
That all seemed to have made everything work fine. The problem is, this is not a fix. I have to do this on alot of systems and I do not want to have to uncheck and recheck remote management throughout the company.
Is this something that any of you are dealing with?
Why would we even have to edit the makeuser file. The case should have already been set on apples end. I also should not have to uncheck and recheck remote management in order to kickstart the service. This should all be already configured properly during the Create Client Installer wizard.
Any help or feedback would greatly be appreciated!
    Thanks!
    (Using ARD 3.5.1 & 10.7.2 machines)

    Lion/ARD users,
I am also having issues with ARD and Lion.
I have done my Lion upgrades remotely via ARD. The Lion upgrades do ok and after install reboot I get remote connection back up again. However after running software update, which downloads ARD Client 3.5.1 my Apple Remove Desktop is no longer able to connect to the machine.
I also cannot access machine via VNC but can access it via SSH.
So it appears to be a problem with VNC ...
    Here is the error:
So while ARD see the "fritz" client ok it cannot connect to it.
I have looked in Console log and there are no clues there about what is causing the problem.
I have install the ARD Admin 3.5 Update, so that does not help fix the problem.
I have 7 remote Mac I need to access to this is a signficant problem...
    Cheers,
    Zebity.
