ARD 3.7 and VoiceOver

Hi all.
OK here's my background. I'm a blind IT engineer / tech admin and support a list supporting blind mac users. My server is a 2010 customised mbp 2.66 i7 with 8gb ram and 2x 512gb SSD drives (drive 2 replaces superdrive bay)
I'm now using Mavericks with Server 3, Deploy Studio and ARD 3.7
Here's the problem.
For me to work with a blind client's mac relying on voiceover, I cannot grab system audio from the client, nor can I use Voiceover keys, etc to control the client's mac to conduct training, repairs and management.
I was hoping that ARD 3.7 would cover my needs but it isn't. the only use it can prove useful for is catalogueing networked systems, setting up routines that don't require direct UI interaction, etc. this is a real disappointment for me.
I've emailed apple accessibility and sent a bug report to apple feedback. heard nothing.
I have road tested and researched various products besides ARD 3.7 and either companies want yearly subscriptions  which in some cases require pro licenses to be purchased. in one particular developer's pack you have to purchase the pro app and central to administer client management, reports, etc. without that, the features needed including full keyboard control and audio interfacing make my work extremely difficult.
in cases where I'm supporting a user who is blind / visually impaired and also has learning difficulties, instructions and detailed settings are of no use because the client cannot fully understand the processes involved, in cases where voiceover isn't playing ball for the client, I could step in to resolve the issue, use terminal within their system, conduct in-depth repairs, set up policies, etc.
If there's any apple Admins here, apple developers reading this forum, please can you integrate voiceover support to client level as well as audio support? there are many blind It techs, developers, engineers, admins, tutors and trainers across the world and this product would make a change. After all, we blind mac users represent apple marketing your products in a way that changes other peoples lives for the better. Any support on this would be much appreciated.
Ed

Not sure how that would happen but you should be able to revert to the Mac App Store version with the following steps:
1. Launch the App Store app
2. Go to the Purchases secton and verify that Apple Remote Desktop is showing in your list
3. Assuming it's in your list, delete Remote Desktop.app from /Applications
4. Verify that Remote Desktop.app is not installed on any other mounted volumes using Spotlight
5. If it is installed then either unmount those volumes or delete the app from those other locations
6. Go back to the Purchases section of the App Store app
7. If Apple Remote Desktop is shown as "Installed" then select "Reload Page" from the "Store" menu
8. The entry for Apple Remote Desktop should now give you the option to "Install"
9. Click "Install"
After installation you should have the correct Mac App Store version that does not prompt for a serial number.

  • How do I create a slideshow with music and voiceover?

I am trying to create a slideshow with photos, music (iTunes playlist), and voiceover created in Garageband. I cannot figure out how to have both the voiceover and the music play during the slideshow. I also tried iDVD but ran into the same problem.
I also wanted certain songs to play during certain sets of pictures and I can't figure out how, other than to create separate slideshows for each song, how to set it up to show the photos for the duration of certain songs... if that is possible. However, my main issue is the first one - how or which program to use to combine photos (iPhoto), music (iTunes), and voiceover (GarageBand).

    Use whichever you want.

Use separate tracks for music and voiceover/narration so you can adjust volumes independently.

Use separate tracks for each song or use two tracks and alternate songs on these tracks so as to allow maximum alignment/overlap possibilities.

Slide photo and/or song to align beginnings and then drag the end photo "handle" left or right to change its duration to match the duration of your song.

  • ARD 3 and ARD 2.x and an 87 year old mother!

Here is the deal. My 87 year old mother has an eMac and a DSL connection, no router. Before we moved her to a new city and different DSL provider, I could control her Mac with my G5 and ARD 2.2. Now, I have a new G5 and a MacBook Pro with ARD 3.0 and mom still has her eMac. I can see her name, and get the ip address, but that is it. We have all the settings on both machines on (but would like to have a checklist to be sure we are accurate), and the ARD timesout and won't connect. I know this has to be something very simple, but I have no idea and my mom isn't getting any younger! We are about to buy two more Macs, one for each of her sisters (ages 70 and 90) so they can all iChat. But guess who gets to watchover all three?
We are all at the end of our ropes with this problem as I have tried since spring to get this fixed. Certainly appreciate any step-by-step advice.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Just out of curiosity, does no one have an answer to this issue? I can't believe out of this entire forum of experts nobody has a suggetion.

  • ARD 3.1 and ARD Not Active on Clients

I have ARD 3.1 installed on a PPX X-serve running 10.4.8. The client I am managing are core duo minis also running version 3.1 and 10.4.8.
Lately when ever I try to see the clients throuh ARD I get the message that ARD isn't active on the client or the client is offline.
I tesetd this on site and ADR is enabled on all the clients and all had working ip connections.
    Any ideas where to start?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Yea same here....our machines (250) can be sitting at the login windows and ARD is running and I can do pretty much anything with them that I want using ARD on them. Thats on a local network though....not using wireless, not that should matter though. Also using ARD 3.1.
When you have users logging off at the clients ARD Agent or something with ARD shutsdown for a moment until the machine gets back to the login window and then the Agent should restart and be waiting for ARD like normal again.
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • With a bluetooth keypboard and voiceover on will the key presses be spoken?

With the on screen keyboard on an ipad and voiceover on when a key is pressed it is read aloud, would this be the same if a bluetooth keyboard was used instead?
    Thanks

After purchasing a bluetooth keyboard, discovered the voiceover does read out what key is pressed and also reads out the typed word when you press space. Very helpful for the visually impaired

  • ARD softtware VPN and remote Macs

One little question. I bought ARD 3.0 and can connect, control, observe to a VPN Server (Mac OSX Server 10.3.9). There are also a couple of mac 10.4 clients in the same network. I cannot connect to these machines. Is this normal. Do I have to buy a second copy of ARD.
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thanks for your reply...
Yes the macs are on the same subnet, ARD is enabled. I have a vpn connection to the osx server, so I don't need to open ports 5900 and 3283 becaurse I am a member of the local network. Or am I wrong. Perhaps I have to configure the OSX firewall service
When I do portscan on the OSX server ports 5900 and 3283 are open.

  • ARD 2.2 and SLES 9 Linux (Tightvnc)

    Hello,
I've just got ARD 2.2 and try now (as descripted in the product specification) to open a VNC Connection to a SUSE SLES9 Linux Server (maintance up-to-date).
1.) VNC session type is not recognized, when the VNC server is not listening to port 5900. This means that it is neccessary to start a VNC server with port 5900. This is not the default for any SUSE Linux system (is it to hard to do a portscan of port 5900-5999?).
2.) Any SUSE Linux System has Tightvnc preinstalled. After taking a look to apples ARD website, it seams to me, that Tightvnc is supported. But it doens't work. Apple mentioned that ARD 2.1 is compatible to Realvnc >= 4.0.. I know that Tightvnc is using a older VNC protocol, maybe the new (beta) version could help. Therefor I've called Apples support (90 Day free after purchase) to get a information about VNC compatible protocols or products.
They told my that this information is not included in the standard 90 day support and I've to pay 650 Euro to get support.
This kind of customer support was the reason to switch away from M$.
It's okay to pay more then 250 Euro for a product thats work a descripted in the specifications, but this is very disappointing.
    Fustrating....

    Hello,
to give to free solution, try to use x11vnc (http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc).
It work with ARD 2.2 as expected so far. My point is the following, Apple has wrote "VNC compatible to Linux" in the ARD 2.2 specifications. When someone writes a program specification, I expect, that I can use the product as long I use it inside of the specification. Please think about, I took my just a couple of hours to test various products with SUSE SLES9 and ARD2.2. It's not magic, it takes a bit of time. Is it too hard for a vendor of a > 250 Euro product to spend a bit of time? Is it to hard to document the supported VNC Protocols? Realvnc introduced a new(incompatible) VNC protocol with 4.0. Is it to hard to support the commonly used and the new protocol? Please understand my right, I personatly think ARD 2.2 is a very fine and usable product and compared to the effort to write the product we are talking about maybe a few weeks of development time.
I'am not willing to accept the behavour of the companies in this times, "our product, is your (customers) problem.
Thanks for the attention reading my posts

  • I have ARD 2.2 and I can control my mother-in-laws computer

I have ARD 2.2 and I can control my mother-in-laws computer over the internet without any problems, I can do any of the task on ARD that can be done. But on my moms computer I can only observe and control her computer with mine. The settings are exactly the same in both computers sharing settings. All the settings in Apple Remote Desktop are set so I can do all the task on ARD. I have all the users name and passwords. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

    the only thing I have
found that is different on the computers is my moms
computer is connected with PPPoe and my
mother-in-laws computer is connected with DHCP.
    Should that matter?
But you wrote, "And my mother-in-law and my mother have the same ISP."
That is definitely something to look into, but if your Mom's computer is connected different, there may also be different ports blocked by the ISP. However, I'd find out what her ARD client version number is first. If your ARD admin can't see that, there are other ways, though it should be able to show you that.
Quick way is to go to /System/Library/StartupItems/RemoteDesktopAgent/ and do a Get Info on the file RemoteDesktopAgent in that folder. If the creation date is 06 or later, it's ARD 3.x, 2005 or earlier, it's earlier.
I should note, if it's an older Mac, it may have a Remote Desktop client earlier than 2.x, like 1.2.4, and you'd have to upgrade that to 2.2 in order to do all the functions on it with your 2.2 Admin program.

  • ARD 3.2 and ARD 1.2 Mac OS 9.22

Hi I have got an Intel iMac running ARD 3.2 and want to remote control an old iMac G3 running Mac OS 9.22 and ARD 1.2. It recognises the G3 and when I try to authenticate it says the password is invalid when it should work. Is it just not possible to connect the two or is there some other way of controlling my G3 from my intel iMac?
    Nick

It sounds so complicated. I'll try it later and let you know how it went.
Dealing with networks from outside (whether from the Internet or dealing with wireless) often is indeed complicated. If you are indeed trying to connect to this system from the Internet (and hence from some other location and having to connect through a router), take a look at this web page:
    http://www.starkpr.com/ard.htm
    It may help.
If I'd posted a new topic, someone would've told me I should've searched for previous threads/posts before I posted!
Suggesting that you search for previous posts doesn't mean that you have to, or should, tag your question onto another thread. You're free to start a new topic, and in fact it's recommended that you do so rather than tagging a new issue/question onto another poster's topic. What people mean by such recommendations is that you try and see if the question has already been addressed before you post. In probably the vast majority of the issues that arise, the subject has already been addressed, so if you can find a previous thread, you save yourself time waiting for an answer and others from going over the same ground yet again. It's not always possible - sometime your issue is different, and sometimes it's just not easy to find previous posts - but it's always worth trying (and if you say you tried when you do post, it should keep people off your back). In any case, posting to a thread that's so old (as this one is) often won't get your post seen at all, and we don't want your issue to go unaddressed just because no one sees it.
    Regards.

  • Changing Document Title in Pages for iPad and VoiceOver

Is there a trick to changing the name of the document in Pages for iPad when voiceover is enabled. I can change the document name when voiceover is turned off but there doesn't seem to be away of getting to the label when voiceover is turned on.

What makes this difficult is that I can export the documents in PDF format, but then I cannot view them in Pages on the iPad as they cannot be uploaded into iCloud and Pages cannot access documents in other cloud storage sites. Pages uses the Word templates best.
I've considered Quickoffice, but don't want to spend the $$ on an app that may not work.
I've even thought about Team Viewer and accessing the documents on my Mac at home, but why remote access another computer just to view native files?
    Thanks for the responses.

  • ARD 2.2 and MacBook Pro

I am sorry if this has already been answered earlier. I just bought a MacBook Pro and needed to install ARD on it. The only version I own is 2.2. After I installed it and tried to launch, I received a message that said I needed to update the software to run on this message and to go to the Software Update. When I tried to update, the computer told me that all my software already is up to date.
Does 2.2 not work with an intel Mac?
    Thanks,
    yaj

ARD 2.x isn't officially supported on Intel-based Macs. There's a workaround that you can find in the forum by searching for "Intel", basically involving forcing the ARD client to run in Rosetta. But for official support on an Intel-based Mac, you need to upgrade to ARD 3.

  • ARD Reporting failing and causing thousands of entries in my system.log for my OSX Server clients

I have a small four system network - all running latest version of Mavericks with latest (3.7.1 ARD)

    3) OSX Server - installed but not running any services

If I target systems 3 or 4, reporting works fine.
Any ideas what is going on here?

My OS is 10.9.3, ARD is 3.7.2 (372A19)
I'm not trying to collect any report data as far as I know.

  • ARD, screen share and a second monitor

I have a 2008 20 inch iMac and 13" aluminium macbook. I wanted to use the iMacs screen with my macbook and decided to get ard (as it was kind of cheap on the app store).
I was a bit disheartened when I found that, when controlling the macbbok from the imac, I couldn't make the window go full screen. I understand this was a resolution issue that couldn't be gotten around.
However did find out that if set used ARD's screen share (rather than the light version that comes with OSX) that I could get full screen by reducing the resolution of the iMac.
However when I plug an external monitor into the macbook it all goes wrong. If I am using the OSX version of screen share (light) then I can choose to show only one display. If I use the ARD version I don't have that option and can only view both screens.
What I had hope for was to be able to use the fullscreen capability of ARDs screen share with my macbook with a second screen attached, but only view the macbook screen on my iMac.
Is there a way of achieving this with ARD. Or am I going to have to try an alternative software?
    Thanks
    Gareth

The obvious choice for an Apple display is the 24-inch LED (backlit) Cinema Display. It as the same Mini DisplayPort connector, and it will give you a few more USB ports. But it as some extra features that may not be necessary for use with an iMac, such as its own iSight camera, built-in speakers, and a power connector for use with MacBooks. And it costs $899 retail. But it would certainly look nice next to an aluminum iMac.
    http://www.apple.com/displays/
For a non-Apple display, there are many choices. They are generally cheaper. The standard digital connector is DVI. You can also use a display with a VGA connector, but DVI would be better if you are getting a new display. If your iMac is a 24-inch model, its built-in display has 1920x1200 native resolution. That would be a good choice for an external display, typically 23 or 24 inch. You can go all the way up to 2560x1600, which is typically a 30-inch display (including Apple's model). You can even get one with Dell branding that works.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Dell/3007WFPHC/
Your choice depends on how much you can afford to spend and how big (in terms of resolution) you want it to be.

  • Can't use audiobooks AND Genius? And VoiceOver not working for radio?

Anyone know how to resolve this? In order to transfer audiobooks, I have to disable the automatic syncing from my nano. But it seems that this means that I lose the ability to transfer the Genius mixes that are created in iTunes.
Also, after much hassle, finally got VoiceOver to work, but it only works when I"m playing music that I already have stored and it won't work for songs on the radio... any ideas?

I'm not sure about the Genius working with audio books, but from what I understand, when you say that you want VoiceOver, iTunes goes through your music list and makes that voiceover prompt for each song thats in their. It can't do that with the radio because the songs aren't preinstalled on the ipod.

  • Pages and VoiceOver

    Hallo !
Pages i a interesting text processor toolb but the interaction with VoiceOver is not perfect! Typing text inte a text editing window produces no speech!
Are there any apple scripts or pograms that overcomes these missing function?
    Thank you for your hints!
    Yours
    Frank Marrenbach

    Hullo Frank,
    Welcome to Pages discussions:
First let me note that text must be selected before having it read back via Speech in Services under the Pages menu. It will not work as you type.
However in Tiger, international support for Voice Over has not been implemented. It works in English, and I gather perhaps Spanish (for the South American Market). Broader international support is suggested in the information available on Leopard, but whether this will include Voice Over in major languages remains to be seen.
There is at least a partial implementation of German Voice Over localisation in Devon Technologies' "Word Services", downloadable from this site:
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/download/index.html
It was originally developed by David Grunenberg, but since his site became the commercial Devon Technologies, there has been no further version of it.
Word Services is best known to forum members for its provision of statistics on selected passages of text: improving the provisions within Pages itself.
As far as I know, it's either that, or wait and see what's in Leopard - even in English, the Voice Over is not so much a part of Pages, as a part of the system that Pages can access to the extent that it's been provided for.
    Cheers.
