ARD admin 2.2 and Leopard

I did the upgrade to 10.5 on my MacBook and now ARD admin 2.2 is not able to open. When it tries to open, it does an attempted update and tells me more current software is already installed and then only lets me exit out...
Anyone know a work around that won't cost me $499 (price for new ARD Admin 3.2)

I just got ARD 3.2 via fedex today because I had the same problem as you and got the same answer you did from Templeton.
Just finished installing ARD 3.2.1, upgrading clients to 3.2.1 and everything is working perfectly. Back in business.
Unfortunately, the cost of upgrading to Leopard just doubled!

  • 10.6.8, ARD admin 3.5 and ARD 3.5.1 REPORTING BROKEN

    Dear all,
Have just upgraded to ARD admin 3.5 on our admin machines (10.6.8) and ARD 3.5.1 on our client machines (10.6.8).
We are able to control and observe all client computers, send Unix commands but none of the reporting (software versions, file search) methods are working - the report for the client computer never gets past 'Transferring report'.
This was all working just fine using ARD admin 3.4 and 3.4 client.
Have tried deleting plist files (server and client), rebuilding prefs, re-adding client computers but nothing has resolved the issue we are having (same on a number of admin machines).
It looks like Apple haven't done enough testing with this version of Apple Remote Desktop.

    Hi Dave,
While I appreciate your response, it is thoroughly unhelpful to the people like myself who are having this problem. It almost sounds like you're a salesman for other products. I know that's not the case (considering how many "points" you have). However, I'm under the impression that ARD does get updates, and even if a single developer is working on the product, that doesn't change the fact that apple advertises the ability to Generate Reports.
If Apple advertises the ability, then I don't suggest anyone give up on the issue by throwing up your hands, as you suggest.
Let me first say that I've been using ARD to generate reports for ~40 computers without problems for quite a long time. It has become an integral part of my workflow.
Anyway, enough of me taking out my frustration on you, here is what I've tried (to no avail... yet. I'm going to solve this if it kills me or I have to reformat my computer) :
    1. Repairing permissions on the clients and the server using diskutilty. This would have been a solution since I could have rolled it out via the command line. But no dice.
    2. Uninstalling & reinstalling ARD admin (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2577). I'm unable to fully install , however, since my user list is automatically repopulated.
    3. Restarting the service on clients using kickstart (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2370). This changes nothing.
I've checked the console, and I did (before removing ARD via KBHT2577) get the error "Encryption key not found for client." I no longer get that error. I've got clients on 10.6, 10.5, and 10.4. So I've tried generating reports for each to see if it affects only certain versions. When connecting to 10.5 and below, I get the error "legacy packet not allowed 111 from 127.0.0.1."
The weird thing is that prior to uninstalling the ARD Admin program, clients were hanging on "transferring report" and I was seeing "Encryption key not found for client." in the console.
Now, after reinstalling, clients are hanging on "generating report." There is no error in the console.
Just giving my input of what I've tried, and what I'm seeing. Sorry if I came off as rude to you, Dave.

  • ARD Admin Question

    Hi everyone,
I have a few clients using ARD Client (configured sucessfully).
    I have two questions:
    1) Can Clients pull up the Chat Window to initiate a Chat Session with the Admin (Me)
    2) Should I login to each Client's system using their username/password (aka user account) - or should I create a Universal Administrator UN/PW to access Clients from my ARD Admin console. And if the latter, what's the best way to do this.
    Thanks in advance

    1)
In System Prefrences, Sharing, Remote Management, Computer Settings, if you check "Show Remote Management Status in menu", then regardless if your observing them or not the user can click on the menu, and see what ARD administrators are online. they can use that menu to request to chat with said ARD admin.
On the ARD computer it pops up as a request to chat in ARD.
I seem to remember some settings in ARD for client initiated chat.
if you uncheck Show Remote managment status in menu bar, and you uncheck show when being observed. Then the client will not show the menu for remote desktop; making it much harder for a user to try and start a ARD chat.
    2)
The easy thing to do, is to have one account, witch is deticated to ARD access on every computer. That way you don't have to know every user's name, and paassowrd and you don't loose access every time a user changes their password. I keep the user name the same. For added security you could use a diffrent password for each machine; but then you need to keep track the password.

  • Does ARD Admin 3.6.x work with Snow Leopard Clients

Our school would like to make a volume purchase of ARD, which is only available for Mountain Lion/Lion. At present, we are using Snow Leopard on all our computers. If we upgrade the teachers' computers to Mountain LIon and give them ARD 3.6.x, will they be able to view/administer Snow Leopard clients? It would be great to hear from someone who has done this in a school setting.
If anyone involved with ARD support is listening, it would be nice to see an ARD admin versus ARD client compatibility table in the specifications for this very useful product.

The current release of the ARD adminstrator application works fine with my Snow Leopard clients which have the 3.5.3 client, though I only have a few and my use is pretty modest. You may get feedback from others who use ARD with a larger client base.
    Regards.

  • ARD Admin 3.3.2 and TimeMachine

Had some trouble connecting to my customers LAN over VPN (L2TP) and ARD Admin 3.3.2(455.19). Could not see any clients, the ones I already had in my list from earlier visits was all marked Offline.
Discovered that if I turned off my local TimeMachine backup, everything worked as it should.
I would like to run TimeMachine locally even if I'm connected to another network.
    Any workarounds/solutions for this problem?

I'm having the same problem. None of the clients on the other side of the VPN are showing up except for the xserve hosting the VPN. It worked fine a few weeks ago...
Turning off local Time-machine backups didn't help me...

  • ARD Admin and Intel Core Duo MacBook

I just received my new Macbook and used the Migration to transfer everything from my old 14" iBook. When finished, everything so far appears to be working fine except my ARD Admin. When first launching the app, I had to reenter the serial number. Now I get a message each time I launch the app stating that "The Remote Desktop Administrator software is out-of-date." I am instructed to go to software update and check for new software. That process results in word that my software IS up to date. I have tried doing a reinstall of the ARD software, with no help. What all do I need to remove in order to remove all the old software to do a new install? My boss is using the same software version on his MacBook Pro without problems. We are running ARD Version 2.2.
Also, I have some saved tasks on my laptop ARD that I would like to set up on my desktop G4. Is there an easy way to complete this process?
    Thanks

I know that ARD likes the client to be as new as the Administrator software. I wonder if it doesn't like that your administrator is 2.2 and your client is more than likely 3.0 or higher being a new machine?
Is the client enabled on your laptop? If it is, try turning it off, then restart and start the admin software.

  • Mountain Lion, ARD Admin, and Screen Share Issue

We recently upgraded one of our Labs to OSX 10.8.2.  The guy who teachs in that Lab then brought to my attention that he can no longer share his screen with computers in the Lab which are not logged in.  If the machine is sitting at the Login screen he cannot share to them until after the students login. Control works fine through ARD, but not sharing.  All clients have ARD version 3.6.2 installed.  ARD Admin is version 3.6.1 and I can replicate in other buildings/locations.
Attempts to share with a 10.8.2 machine (one or many) which don't have anyone logged in will by all indications in ARD look like the sharing is happening on the Administrator machine, but you can visually see the screen is still sitting at the login prompt.  The display on the machine to be controlled flashes for a second when the Admin clicks Share and it flashes again when the Admin unshares their screen.  The same test run against a 10.6.8 client(still have a group in th next lab over) doesn't have the same problem.
My initial thought was this may be some sort of feature, but I don't see any where to turn it off. I've searched around, but I don't think I'm searching with the right terms for this issue. Any thoughts?

I've never been able to share my screen to computers that no one was logged in on; and i've been using ARD sense Mac OS X 10.4. I'm not saying it hasn't been possible; I've just never been able to get a computer to do that.
My work around is use send unix command as user root. I have a unix script that basicaly triggures and applescript to type a user / pass to login of a generic account. it takes about a minute to run. and if some one is logged in, it dosen't do any thing to that computer.
Heck it can even be set to be the default send unix command. so all the the user has to do is select all computers, click send unix, and click send.
    Some thing like this:
    if [[ "$(who | grep console)" == "" ]]; then osascript -e '
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke return
    keystroke "a" using command down
    keystroke "PASSWORD"
    keystroke tab
    keystorke "a" using command down
    keystroke "USERNAME"
    keystroke return
    keystroke return
    keystroke return
    end tell';

  • ARD Admin 3.2 on 10.5 no longer connects to 10.4

I used to be able to connect to my grandmother's computer over the internet using ARD Admin. But ever since upgrading to Leopard and ARD Admin 3.2, I have been unable to connect to her machine. The last time I was at her place I updated Tiger to the latest version, I updated her ARD client to the most recent version for Tiger (I believe it's 2.x but I'm not sure). I've done everything I can think of to make this work and it won't work.
She has an old PowerMac G4 and it can not be updated to Leopard.
Like I said, it used to work just fine. The only changes were on my machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm her only form of help and giving her tech support over the phone is difficult and frustrating for her.

    Hi
Yes I can confirm its working for me. Leopard Client or Tiger Client connecting and controlling Tiger Server fine. I can also connect and control 10.5 Server using ARD with 10.4 Client. I've seen a similar problem to yours at one site when using 10.5 or 10.4 Client to connect to 10.5 Server. This has never worked although everything is setup the same as per other sites. Like you I can ping, see the server in the list and even connect. The problem shows itself in two ways. I connect but get a black screen and nothng else. Other times I get what you get.
I don't think its a router problem because the same router is used at other sites without the problem. This one site's ISP is one that I've not come across before (ie: not one of the 'mainstream' ones). I've not had chance to investigate but perhaps it may be a problem with them? I am clutching at straws with this theory though.
When you upgraded to Leopard did it coincide with an ISP change?

  • Downgrade App store bought version of ARD admin?

I bought ARD admin 3.5.3 via the App Store a while back to control computers at work from home on my Macbook Pro 17 inch late 20122 occasionally and it worked great.
Following the 3.6.1 upgrade, all attempts to connect to any computer at work crash the Netgear incoming broadband router. This is with the ports mapped to various single macs to control, mostly running Snow Leopard.
I wanted to downgrade to 3.5.3 and followed the tip here exactly
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20292728#20292728
But since this is from a support/download version of the Admin tool, it asks for the serial again, which I never received as it was an App store purchase.
I can only now re-install 3.6.1 from the App Store.
Does anyone know a way of getting the older version from the App Store? Maybe I'm missing a very obvious trick here (like a "Legacy versions" button?).
    Many thanks in advance
    James

I have a similar issue - I have 3 copies of ARD 3.6.1 running perfectly on Lion systems - but also one "old" PPC Tiger system which detect as running ARD 2.2 (though I never actually installed 2.2 I assume it built into Tiger). I think ARD 3.4 is compatible with Tiger but wonder if anyone has got thise to work somehow as I also don't have relevant serial numbers.
Fortunatly remote access does work to the Tiger system but some of the other function don't work (e.g. remote package install).

    Shawn

  • ARD Admin with Standard Account

I log in with a Standard Account on my MacBook Pro under Mac OS X 10.6.8, open Apple Remote Desktop Administrator. I have access to most of the commands in the menu bar except those under Reports (All) and Manage (Copy Items, Install Packages, Send UNIX Command, Empty Trash, Set Startup Disk, Rename Computers, Upgrade Client Software, Change Client Settings).
Is there a way to allow the Standard Account to access all the features of ARD Admin?
I ask because we have a policy in place where everyone must be using a Standard Account and only the Admin account to authenticate installations, etc. I provide support and use ARD to connect with remote computers.
    Thanks!

I seem to remember there being a setting in ARD to allow what non administer accounts can do with ARD. But to access these settings you need to first login as an administrator, and set those settings in ARD Prefereces.

  • ARD Admin with MacIntel

Currently using ARD 2.2 im not able to use the application (Admin version) on my brand new iMac Intel.
When i launch ARD it says "Software not up to date, check with software update", but it seems not available any update for this.
    Any help?

Some of you may have seen messages over the past few
days with workarounds on how to use the admin
component of ARD 2.2 on Intel-based, which variously
called for removing, moving, or renaming various
pieces of the ARD client components. It turns out
that the only thing that needed to be "moved" was
    ARDAgent.app
    (/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgen
    t.app).
The only thing you need to do is the following:
    - Ensure ARDAgent.app is not running (in most
instances, this just means ensuring that Remote
Desktop isn't enabled in System Preferences ->
    Sharing)
    - Navigate to
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ in the
Finder, and Get Info on ARDAgent.app. Check "Open
    using Rosetta".
That's it! No deleting or moving (and forgetting)
pieces of the OS. Yes, yes, I was fine with the
workaround, too; at least it let me run ARD. But now,
there is a much more "friendly" workaround that does
not require modifying the Mac OS X installation.
Also, with ARDAgent.app running with Rosetta, full
ARD client functionality also seems to still work.
While ARD admin may not be "qualified" or "supported"
on Intel-based Macs, I hope this shows how little is
required to run ARD 2.2 on an Intel-based Mac...
This does not seem to work on some systems.
    I have tried reinstalling ARD.
It never finishs the install, Software Update does not see it to update to the current version, and all copies of the ARDAgent.app that I have seen do not allow you the option to run as rosetta.

  • ARD admin behind Airport

I am using a Snow Airport at home (with an Airport Express to expand range) as my router. I use ARD at work to manage all my machines. I want to use the admin at home to manage the same machines at work. When I had a linksys router, everything worked fine, but when I went to the Airport setup, I don't get full ARD control, just VNC control. None of the ARD information shows up in the ARD Admin window either. How can I configure my Airport so I can control my mahcines at work with full ARD control at home?

    HELP!!!!!!!

My Apple Higher Ed Tech rep got back to me with the answer and he did it quite quickly.  If any others on this list have a problem, I will highly reccomend using your tech rep if you have a large enough user base to have a tech rep.  My guy has saved me from a number of headaches in the past few months.
The answer he provided is :
"Please see the following Apple KBase article for the procedure:
I took a look and it gives the procedure needed to accomplish the install.
    Symptoms
The Apple Remote Desktop 3.3 installer may report that it requires Mac OS X v10.6 when used with OS X Lion.
    Products Affected
Apple Remote Desktop 3.X, OS X Lion
    Resolution
Follow these steps to install Apple Remote Desktop and update it to a Lion-compatible version.
Copy the Apple Remote Desktop Installer from the Installation disc to the desktop.
Hold the Control key and click on the Installer icon.
In the contextual menu that appears, choose Show Package Contents.
In the package contents, navigate to Contents/Installers.
Control-click on RemoteDesktopAdmin.pkg and choose Show Package Contents.
In the package contents, double-click the Archive.pax.gz file to expand it.
In the expanded archive, navigate to Archive/Applications/ and drag Remote Desktop to your Applications folder.

  • ARD Admin 2.2 in Lion - BROKEN!

    All -
I updated to 10.7 and ARD Admin no longer worked.  Following unistall directions from Apple, I removed the application and all .plist files, restarted.
I have a ARD ver. 2.2 and reinstalled.
Now I get an error saying "Power PC apps are no longer supported."
I realize that Lion doesn't support Power PC any longer, but does anyone know of a way I can still use this installer, and get to a working version of ARD?
    (Without buying a new copy!)
Thanks for your help and ideas!

ARD 2.2 is far too old to work on Lion. If that's what you do indeed have, there's no way to get it working with Lion. You will need to purchase a new copy of ARD.
