ARD admin app clocks/unresponsive when I try to control

I bought and installed ARD 3.4 today on my macbook pro, 10.6.6 ... I followed the "easy setup" tutorial on apple's site to get the other computer/s accessible for the client side.
I am able to observe the clients immediately and without issue. But when I choose "control", the pinwheel starts turning, a pop up says "connecting to [client] computer" and the app becomes unresponsive. I have walked away for 10-15 minutes and nadda...I have to "force quit" the application.
I tried the "curtain" option, to just to see...it puts the lock screen on the client's computer, but same as above, the "connecting to [client] computer" and clocking/unresponsive.
The ARD clients are my mom's imac g4 10.5.8 ... and also tried in desperation my friend's acer hackbook 10.5.7
I apologize in advance if there are multiple threads on this - I have key word searched all I could think of and was unable to locate any thread similar to my problem.

Hi,
Just bought a mac mini server and I bought ARD from the app store.
I can observe the server no problem, but as soon as I try to control, the wheel start spinning and never stop.
Please solve this ASAP.
