ARD and Faronics' DeepFreeze

How does ARD interface with Faronics' DeepFreeze? Is there an add-on service to download and install? I want to have some of the corresponding functions on our DeepFreeze Macs, through ARD, that we have for Windows units with Faronics' enterprise DeepFreeze console.

There are templates that are installed by running the deepfreeze assistant on a mac. Its simple to do. look at this man found here: http://www.faronics.com/Faronics/Documents/DFM_Manual.pdf (specifically starting with page 22 for info on how to install deepfreeze tasks into ard). Hope this helps.

  • Changing user type from ARD and Unix command

I am now in charge of a Mac network encompassing many different machines, running a mix between Tiger and Leopard. I have them on ARD and would like to batch "demote" every user except my admin account on each machine to standard user privileges. What would be the command I need to send through to do this en masse?

You could run a dscl command on the 10.5 machines. Maybe run it within a shell script that searches in the /Users folder and returns each folder name (user name). But, again this would only work on the 10.5 machines with the new directory services.

  • ARD and changing IP addresses

I am running ARD on a wifi network at my school to manage new laptop carts and my design lab. I am having the issue where a computer connects and recieves a different IP address from the one saved in ARD, and then the computer registers as Offline or Unavailable. The only fix I see online seems to be manually re-entering the IP, but this can't be the only way.
I don't understand why you can't just delete all knowledge of a machine in ARD and then just rescan the network and re-enter authentication. It seems insane that you can't rescan for new IPs. I have like 90 computers. This must be an absolute nightmare on large networks.
I would really appreciate any suggestions!

Have you tried using Scan Network Range in ARD?
Alterntively have you consider talking to your Network Administrator about enabling mDNS trafic on the local network?
    How is the wireless setup?

  • Rename client computer via ARD and Automator

Does anyone know of a method or action to rename (Computer name) Macs using AppleRemoteDesktop and Automator?
I have over 700 laptops on a school network that I would like to rename based on a tab deliminated text file containing the all the mac (ethernet) addresses and the assocated user.
I have tried sending a unix script and the text file via ARD to change the computer name via scutil, but it doesn't work consistently.

You should be able to use AppleRemoteDesktop to rename the remote computer. Once you are connected to the remote computer, just go to "System Preferences...", and click on "Network" and change the computer name.
If you are a non-administrator of ARD, you may need to turn on the access privilege to rename the remote computer. Go to "Preferences..." in ARD, and click on "Security" button, and turn the access privileges on.

I am having an issue with ARD and copying to remote
    sites.
Using IPSecuritas, I can get to any of our 5 sites
and I'm able to do pretty much everything but copy. I
can not copy to or from any remote machine. I cannot
push ARD upgrades or packages at all. They start at
0% and just sit there. This has been an issue in ARD
    2.2 and 3.0.
I can copy just fine to any machines at our main
branch (locally), but cant to any others.
We are using Soekris & Monowall for IPSec. Timbuk2
can transfer files just fine via IPsec, so I was
thinking it was a ARD issue. Anyone have any ideas
on where the issue might be? Thanks...
Here is more on the issue.
From my home, I am not able to do file transfers from behind my firewall. But if I go outside my firewall, I can do the transfers just fine. I opened up ports 3283, 5900 & 22 on both UDP and TCP protocols. That didnt work either..
but at least I now know that it's the firewall that is causing the issue. Would any one have any idea where to look or what might bbe going on? ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • ARD and mkpg

I have a lab of 32 emacs running panther and I would like to intall imovieHD, which is on my site licensed i-Life 05 CD. I have found the invisible folders and files on the CD of the appropriate application, but there is one that is entitled imovieHD.mpkg. I think that the mkpg is sort of like a pointer that directs other packages to install. Under the install packages window of ARD I have placed the mkpg file, but it would not copy to the clients. I then placed just the pkgs of the pieces and parts for imovieHD and they copied just fine. BUT how do I know that I got all of the parts? Is there a way to dissassemble a mkpg and find out what it is doing?
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I should use my iLife to move imovieHD to all of my emacs?>
    thanks.

  • ARD and the network traffic

I noticed that ARD after a certain time, usually at night, sends over the network mega mega data. Does anyone know why?

By default ARD has a default reporting day/time enabled. When in turn means, when you add clients the default reporitng day/time is applied to the client. The default reporting time in ARD is 12 am (midnight)/ everyday.
When you add computers in ARD, you can set a diffrent reporting time/day for the client. (It's part of the dialog box that asks for the computer password.)
You can also go into the ARD prefrences and change or disable the default reporting time/days. This would not change the reporting time/day for clients already added.
You can change the reporting time of a client by getting info on the computer record in ARD, and then clicking on the reporting tab. If you try to change the reporting time on too many clients at ones, the change will silently fail.
If you have many clients, you can reduce the demands on your network by staggering the reporting time of your clients. (if you have 240 clients, you could set 10 clients to run at 12 am, 10 clients at 1 am, 10 clients at 2 am, and so on and so forth)
On a side note, it's a good idea to set a reporting time that will consitently work. IE don't set a the reporting time to 12 am, if your clients turn off at 11 pm, and then turns back on at 1 am. Because then the ARDClient expect reporting to run, and it will not happen.
If your users use laptops, and take the laptops home at night. 12 am (midnight) the default reporting time will probable never sucesee. 1 most users will probable not have their laptop on at this time. 2 the laptops are not on your network, so they won't be able to report in.  I set laptops to report in at times the users are frequently on, ( 11 am to 2 pm)
If reporting is enabled, but is unable to run, it can cause issues. For instance you may not be able to run reports on the client or install software. So a good reporting time is important.
If you have lots of clients, you might want to consider giving your ARD computer a static IP. That way your clients don't try to spam the wrong computer trying to report in.
Make sure your ARD computer is on, and ARD is running, at the times you have your clients set to report in.
If you have lots of clients, you may want to consider setting your ARD computer to have a static IP.
if you have mulitple ARD computers, you may want to configure only one ARD computer to have reporting enabled.

  • ARD and AirPort Extreme

In order to sort my questions a bit, I have opened another thread as follow-up on my previous one (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=715642&tstart=0)
As figured out, it is necessary to use port forwarding on ports 5900 and 3283 to make ARD 3.0 working correctly. At least I found no other solution. If anybody has one, please share it with me.
Therefore I'm a bit afraid to use port forwarding since I feel it could be a potential security risk to my computer.
I already have checked that usage of ARD is disabled at system settings / Internet & network / sharing / services. I even have added to show the small binoculars icon at the menu bar to be aware if something goes on there.
Is there anything else I can do to increase security or is there even a different solution to enable ARD without the use of port forwarding ?

Sorry, but there is no alternative to forwarding the ports; that's the way TCP/IP works with NAT (which the AE is using to give your laptop it's IP address). Forwarding is no less secure, though, than if the system has a native IP address.
But if you've turned off ARD in the Sharing preference on your laptop (I presume it's your admin laptop you're referring to), the ARD administration app will still work, but it will be impossible for anyone to access your laptop through ARD (and all but impossible though anything else), so you really don't need to worry. If you're truly concerned, you could run a traffic monitoring utility such as Little Snitch which can alert you to any attempts to access your system.

  • ARD 3 and Faronics Deep Freeze questions

    Hello everyone
I am interning at an IT department of a branch campus of a large university. Among other new exciting things I was recently given the responsibility to administer the 5 campus macs that are connected to the network as actual works machines (there are others but those are chat only machines and aren't connected to the same subnet but rather on wireless). 1 of them is a faculty members and is easy enough to figure out, the other 4 are in labs and have the Faronics software Deep Freeze installed on them. I have the deep freeze assistant installed for ARD (so i have all the UNIX commands) and the PDF manual from Faronics but am still unable to unfreeze computers across the network to run updates. I vaguely recall setting up the assistant and putting in the credentials for admin.. although I'm not sure if i put in the right stuff. My command to thaw a machine current looks like this
    /Applications/Faronics/DFXControl.app/Contents/MacOS/DFXControl command <<adminfordeepfreeze>> <<passwordfordeepfreeze>> bootThawed
I run this as root. I am sending it against machines that are just sitting at the login screens. I feel like I'm missing something very obvious.
Any help would be appreciated! Remember I'm just a n00b.

See this article on disabling Dashboard:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/46236/2005/08/disabledashboard.html
It should work through ARD, though I haven't tried it.

  • ARD and XP Startup integration

Not sure if this has already been covered, but I know I have searched high and low for a way to script startup disk changes from XP back to OS X. I was hoping this might prove beneficial to someone else in my situation. Here is our situation and what we did to finally get around this stumbling block:
-250 iMacs dual-booted with XP and Tiger deployed across university campus labs using Mike's excellent tools.
-Predominately Windows network, with many Windows 2003 Servers, some Linux, and now Xserve with ARD Smile
-XP as the mandatory default OS presented to lab users, with OS X as a manual choice through BootCamp.
We already use Active Directory for automating windows software deployments and maintenance each night through group policies and startup scripts. We also use Deep Freeze Enterprise, which holds this whole process together IMHO. What we ultimately wanted though was to get the OS X clients updating at night as well, and start leveraging some of the amazing capability of Open Directory and MCX. Once deployment was complete, we were faced with the problem of how to reboot these machines into OS X at will...
The solution we found lay in using the excellent open source AutoIt scripting tool. By writing a very small script that handled calling the Startup Disk control panel executable, we could compile that as a AutoIt executable, and then package that together with some XP AutoAdmin registry keys to create a single msi installer that can sit on a network drive somewhere and be called as part of a computer startup script (just like we use for XP maintenance).
Here is the basic workflow for this procedure:
1)Around midnight DeepFreeze kicks off an automated reboot of all our lab computers to thaw them out and get their updates/software installs. By tweaking the scheduling of this maintenance period, I instead schedule a basic reboot at the same time (keeping the systems frozen) with my custom AutoIt package waiting in a startup script in place of the windows update stuff.
2)As XP boots up, it runs the script, the startup panel quickly flashes as the volume is changed, and the system reboots again.
3)OS X boots up (much faster I should note than XP) and is ready for ARD business. Software Updates, package installs, whatever you want to schedule.
One of the first things I did was to make a small shell script that I could use to easily add cron jobs in root's crontab so the clients could reboot back to XP in the morning before the labs open. I know ARD can schedule this, but I feel better knowing each clients has its own means of doing this should network comms break down. Here's a basic script I use:
    #!/bin/bash
    # Adds necessary cron entries to clients so that systems reboot back into Windows at 6 AM
    rm -f crontab.file.$USER
    crontab -u $USER -l > crontab.file.$USER
    echo "15 12 * * * /sbin/reboot" >> crontab.file.$USER
    echo "30 05 * * * /usr/sbin/bless -mount /Volumes/Untitled/ -legacy --setBoot" >> crontab.file.$USER
    echo "00 06 * * * /sbin/reboot" >> crontab.file.$USER
    crontab -u $USER crontab.file.$USER
4)Once updates are done, and morning starts to dawn, the systems bless their XP volumes and reboot, without having ever been thawed. I know many tasks can be done using launchd and other Apple tools, but I am comfortable with Unix and cron has always worked for me.
It's a fairly hackish setup at best, but from what I have seen so far it's the only alternative. At this point, we are still testing individual labs and just making sure it's stable enough to deploy campus wide. We plan to initially tackle the backlog of software updates, general fixes, and package deployments, however this capability has opened the door to automation and MCX management, including true Active Directory integration.
If anyone is interested in further details, or has some constructive criticism to help make this better, please feel free to contact me.

Quick question- how exactly are you running your autoit script with deepfreeze? We're trying to do something similar with Vista, but are running into trouble, as our script depends on mouse clicks and won't work without a user actually logged in.

  • ARD and VNC no longer connect to 2 out of 3 servers. Please help.

We have 3 Mac OSX servers here - Web, DB, File. Recently, I attempted to connect via TightVNC - I only had a PC with me at the time. After setting the Mac servers to accept VNC connections (with a password), I was able to connect with TightVNC. ARD was still working fine as usual on the Mac.
Last week, both the VNC and ARD connections started failing on the Web and File servers. The DB server works fine with both though. All of the remote and VNC settings on all 3 servers are the same, and like I said, everything was working fine. I also tried Chicken of the VNC from my Mac, but I get the same results (cannot connect).
The ARD icons for the web and file servers are greyed out in ARD now. When I try to connect to them, I just get the message " Connection failed to (server name.)" The current status for both of these servers is "unknown." I can ping both of them though.
Any ideas on why this would be working, then stop? Would a reboot fix this?
What stumps me most is that the DB server connection is still working, even though all 3 of these servers are set up the same and were working without a problem.
    Thanks for any help!

I have found that reverse DNS entries, especially when they are wrong, can really mess things up. If you haven't already, in your ARD scanner windows, right-click and add the "DNS Name" column, and adjust the columns so you can see it. Whenever you have problems connecting in ARD, that's always a quick thing you can check. If the DNS name does not match your computer name, you'll have problems.
I don't think you gave enough detail of what is and isn't working, but in general, you can try connecting both with dns names and IP addresses, and connecting to Macs sometimes works better by putting their name as macname.local instead of macname.yourdomain.com.
If you try to connect with VNC via IP address, and the IP addresses on your servers are static (should be), and it doesn't work, it very likely could be a firewall setting. Even if you have the firewall off or ports open, you'll want to run a port scan against the server in question to test what truly is open.
This is all general stuff. Post something more specific if none of this helps (detail of OS versions, programs used, ports set open, any error messages, etc).
    Good luck

  • Problems with ARD and headless MacMini (new 1,66 DualCore)

    Hi,
i would like to set my brandnew MacMini 1,66 as webserver.
And there the problem starts: when the MacMini runs headless (without monitor attached) it thinks that there is a television attached and i get a very distorted screen when connecting via ARD 2.2. Attaching the DVI-VGA adapter does not help!
How can i tell the Mini to switch to a "normal" resolution without attaching a monitor?
I seems not to be very useful to connect a monitor to a computer that is supposed to run headless...
    HELP!!!
1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   ARD 2.2

I have the exact same problem with two PowerMac G5's. I need to have full resolution on the remote G5 which has no monitor connected, but only get to choose between PAL and NTSC TV resolution. This is really annoying, and in my opinion a major bug in ARD 3.1 and below. Why is the user forced to see such a small remote window if the remote computer is capable of much more?

  • ARD and controlling box with dual monitors!

My workstation at home has dual monitors,
when I connect to it with ARD both monitors are displayed, which means the window looks very wide, small and funny.
You can hardly see anything either.
    (they are both highres)
I only need to see one monitor when I connect with ARD. Is there anyway I can get that working?

You can set ARD to view all screens at once or at real screen resolution. Click the 'Fit Screen in Window' icon (looks like an X with arrow points and a diamond in the middle).
I have had some issues with my Multi-screen machines colors displaying oddly while in 'Fit Screen in Window' mode, but turning it off fixes the issue and lets you auto scroll around like virtual Desktop.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to connect to remote computer using ARD and AE

Does anyone have detailed instructions on how I can us my AirPort Extreme and setup all the ports to allow the use of ARD remotely?

You can configure your AirPort Extreme for ARD using the AirPort Utility. ARD is one of the choices under Port Mapping.
You get to the port mapping option, as follows:
    Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the AirPort Extreme, and then, select Edit.
Select the Network tab to enable it.
Click on the "+" button under the Port Settings field.
Click on the drop-down arrow to the right of the Description field. (see image below)
Select Apple Remote Desktop. This will automatically populate the other fields on the page.
Select Save, and then, select Update.
Allow the base station to reset.
