ARD Cannot Wake Mac That Put Self To Sleep

This follows similar, if not the same lines as this unanswered/archived post.

I have ARD 3.2.2 and 3.2.2 Client installed. ARD can tell my PowerMac to sleep, then following the sleep command, wake it. The problem occurs when the PowerMac Energy Saver schedule kicks in and puts the machine to sleep. When the PowerMac puts itself to sleep, ARD can not wake it. ARD reports the machine's Current Status as Sleeping, but that's about it.
Has anyone experienced this and found a solution?

From your description, if I understand you are running ARD on a laptop, connected via wifi. Try simplifying things by connecting your ARD via Ethernet and see what you get.
ARD uses several ports and network protocols, and wifi may not be ideal for ARD.
After your PM goes to sleep, ARD cannot talk to the client, and needs to wake the hardware up using Wake On LAN (WOL), and maybe your wifi AP is not passing all the required traffic for this scenario. Here is some info about WOL http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/what-is-wake-on-lan.aspx

  • How can I lock my mac without putting it to sleep or logout?

    Hi,
I want to be able to keep my mac running, but when I live my home I rather want it to be locked. But the only choices I have is to logout, put it to sleep or minimum waiting for 3min for the screensaver to start.
I've searched for widgets and through the OS it self and haven't found anything.
Any one who know a little hack that you can do this?

I am not at my Mac right now, so I cannot verify the correct settings, but here goes:
You can do this through the Keychain Access utility. Go into Applications -> Utilities -> Keychain Access, and then click on "View" on the menu bar (Authenticate as administrator if the screen is grayed out by clicking the padlock in the lower left corner). Click on "Show Status in Menu Bar" and save your settings. Click the padlock again to disable changes. Now a black lock icon should show up in the upper right hand corner on the menu bar. Click it and your choice will be something to the effect of locking the keychain, and locking the screen.
You can also use the fast user switching menu that was mentioned in another reply, but if you do and you just click on "Login Window" in the drop down users menu, and you have your users show up as a list of names with pictures, it is more insecure because it showes exactly who is logged in, and their name is already spelled. This is the same problem with the Keychain method and the screen saver -- the name of the user is already filled in. To prevent would-be thieves from accessing you mac through Fast User Switching, change the login box to display name and password fields instead. This method doesn't allow someone to see the logged in user, but it is inconvenient until you get used to it. Hope this helps.

  • Cannot Wake Mac Mini

    Hi there team,
I use a Mac Mini as an itunes server. It is an intel 2.0Ghz model Macmini2.1 which used to run fine under Snow Leopard.
I installed Lion on it after upgrading the memory to 2Gb but is has started refusing to show anything on the video monitor.
The only way I can make the monitor work is to power the unit off and on again.
I didn't think to check but I believe it might still work when accessed from my iphone and ipad and streams OK to my Airport express (But I need to double check this)
I have set the computer sleep to "never" in the energy saver section of system preferences.
I don't run any other apps on it. It just connects to my music library which is on an external firewire disc.
I think the only reason I upgraded to Lion was because I was a mobile me customer forced to migrate to icloud.
Anyone else have this issue ?
    Cheers
    Lizardpoint

Thanks Tim, just check and I'd already "checked" that option too.
Since I'd got the Mac Mini G4, running in parallel, which can put to Zzzz and wake up anytime without any problem since Day One !
Regarding my new Mac Mini INTEL ... I tried to erase, to reformat, and to reload the whole OS 10.4.5 and the problem persist :< !
IMHO ... I believe this maybe variations or bugs on ARD Clients 2.2.1 (INTEL) and ADR Clients 2.2 (PPC) ...?!
Let's recap ... Within a few minutes that I put my Mini INTEL to Zzzzz ; its possible that to be woke up using Apple Remote Desktop from my Pismo ... but after a while ( did not have patient to measure that ) say, 30min ... I can only wake it up by means of physical touch e.g. touch any keyboard or mouse button or using the wireless Apple Remote Controller !
Kindly can anyone please to test it out?!

  • Sometimes my phone does not make its usual noise when I wake it or put it to sleep what should I do?

When I wake the iphone 4 up it makes the wake up click noise and then other times it doesn't and then when I touch the button to make it go to sleep it makes the turn off click noise and then other times it doesn't - how do I fix this? as it's only been doing it for the last 3 weeks or so and nothings happened to the phone so I have no idea whats going on.....

How long have you had your phone? Because if you've had it a long time, the battery in the phone might of died on you. Or have you dropped it in water, snow, from high up? All those things could of disconnected something internally in your phone, or permentaly damaged the internal hard drive its self, or the sims card.

  • How do I prevent non-admin users from putting Lion to sleep?

I share a MacPro at home with a few others.  I use it as a server as well as keep content on it that is streamed to all sorts of devices; they use it as a mac to check e-mail.  Two of the users have a really bad habit of putting it to sleep because the display wastes power being on (even though it will dim in 60 seconds and turn off in 3).  Despite my best efforts to assure them that putting it to sleep will cause other things to crash once a month they go ahead and try to do it anyway.  Suffice it to say they then ask me why the AppleTV has no access to the content stored on the MacPro.
With that in mind I want to know if it is possible to require an administrator password to put the Mac to sleep?  5 of 7 users do not have admin privileges, the other won't put it to sleep.  If you know a wayf to prevent it - you would be my hero.  If your suggestion is simply prevent them access to the Mac that won't really work - despite my hopes.
Let me know - its a huge pain every time it happens.
    Thanks,
    Sandy.

Hi - you have will have to change the device passwords on all the base stations and then don't give them to anyone except the administrators and tell them not to save them on their computers that use the older versions of the Airport Utility - for the newer versions like the mobile apps, as soon as you enter the pasword it is saved and is visible in the advanced pane along with the network password - so if anyone gets a hold of your iPad or iPhone, they can edit the whole network - I have this same issue with my networks in the office and it is inconvenient but doable - I hope this helps

  • Mac Mini 2014 Oct cannot wake up after sleep

Mac Mini 2014 Oct Version, cannot wake up after sleep by typing on keyboard or moving mouse (both hardwired USB) if external HDMI screen goes to sleep mode too (usually after 1 min if no signal coming from the MAC). To wake up, I ust turn off and turn on the screen and keep typing on the keyboard. I already checked "prevent computer from sleeping if display goes to sleep". But does not help. This is very annoying. I now try to set the sleep timer to more than 1 hour. Wasting my energy and not helping. I tried connecting my HDMI screen to a HDMI to mini-Display port adaptor cable, then plug into the thunderbolt port of the MAC. Same issue, no improvement.

I may know whats going on with the wake from sleep issue. I have a Mac Mini 2012 but this  fix (see below) should work on any product running 10.8.2 Mine is at 10.10.1 and it worked.   First off you can tell if your Mac Mini is in sleep mode by looking at the small light on the front of the Mini. If its pulsing... going from bright to dim its in sleep mode. If you put your Mac in sleep mode, or it goes into sleep mode it will wake from sleep BUT ONLY for the first 4 hours. After 4 hours it will go into what is known as "safe sleep".  The light on the front will be off and you won't be able to wake your Mac. The only way to wake the Mac when in safe sleep is to hit the power button and then wait a minute or longer as your system will need to pull the data from the disk and load to ram. This is causing the issue where its not waking from sleep. You can move your mouse or hit the keys all you want but it won't wake from sleep. This is a real pain as you have to press the power button on the back of the Mac mini and wait for the system to come out of its slumber.   Here's what Apple says:
With the release of the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 supplemental update 2.0, a new feature was introduced to enter safe sleep after four hours of the computer being connected to AC power. This is an effort to comply with the European Energy Standards (ErP Lot6). This will only occur if there is no wireless or Ethernet activity and no activity from external devices such as USB storage devices. This is normal behavior for the following models:
MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 and later)
MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012 and later)
MacBook Air (Mid 2012 and later)
    iMac (Late 2012 and later)
Mac mini (Late 2012 and later)
I have found a fix that puts an end to this nonsense..... Go to the Mac terminal (Google if you don't know how or youtube) and run the following commands (Very easy to do and if a novice like my self can do you can for sure)
    1. When in the terminal mode type:
pmset -g          This will show your current configuration of your sleep, hibernate, etc You may want to print so you can restore these values if needed.
    2. Change your standbydelay to  86400    86400 is number of seconds which is 24 hours. Here’s the command:
    sudo pmset -a standbydelay 86400
    3. Change autopoweroffdelay to 86400  Here’s the command:
    sudo pmset -a autopoweroffdelay 86400
    4. At last but not least change autopoweroff to 0   Here’s the command:
    sudo pmset -a autopoweroff  0
Run pmset -g to verify your setting have changed.  I rebooted my system and checked again to make sure.  Since I made the changes no more going into Safe sleep!!! You can change the values to what you like. I used 86400 secs. (24 hours)  I hope this helps!

  • When will Apple fix Lion OS X v10.7 from freezing after my 27" Mac is put to sleep? I must admit that I am amazed that Apple would release an OS that has this problem, for that matter any serious problem.

When will Apple come up with a fix for Lion OSX v10.7 from freezing after Lion is put to sleep?  My 27"Mac freezes after being put to sleep and a hrad boot is required to be able to use the system.  I have complained to the local Apples store numerous times. The Genious Bar re-installed the OS and it crashed the very next day and continues to crash two or three times per week.  I am amazed that Apples would relase a product, any product before it has been proven to be solid, then again, look at the release of the newest IPhone 4-S.

    Neil from Oz wrote:
So do you have a question about how to fix your system?
The question/problem is "My 27"Mac freezes after being put to sleep."
Gabor, I can't help, except to report that I, too, experience very frequent unexplained crashes and freezes in Lion. However (so far) not when I put it to sleep.
There are a lot of reports about freezes. Here's one. Maybe you should join that thread. Someone there is also reporting that "Lion has a bug that freezes the system when waking the system from sleep."
Are you getting freezes/crashes at other times or only when sleeping the computer?
And does it successfully go to sleep?
Does it freeze when you wake it, or at the point where you're putting it to sleep?

  • Manually "sleeping" my MAC results in a state where I cannot wake it

I'm running 10.5.6, and if I manually sleep my iMAC, I cannot wake it. Only solution is to push and hold the power button for around 10 secs (or unplug the unit) and then power back on.
    Solutions?
    - Greg

I don't normally "sleep" my Mac. Today a family member visiting manually put it to "sleep".
When I tried to wake the Mac .... the USB hub came to life (lights) .... the scanner warmed up and reset, but the screen was dark and the keyboard/mouse dead.
I had to shut it down with the power button and restart. I have never had this happen before, but it is quite rare for me to "sleep" my Mac.

  • Why does my mac try to wake every two hours when I have put it to sleep?

A question for a newbie, so please forgive me if theres not enough detail. I notice from the Console log that my mac tried to wake every two hours when I put it into sleep mode yesterday evening. The log records the following message "mac error 09/09/2013 02:21:05.000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: RTC (Alarm)" The machine then spends a few minutes logging other activity before returning to inactive mode until the next 2-hour cycle time comes around. Should I be worried about this, or is it a normal Mountain Lion inbuilt routine. If so what's its purpose, and why at 2 hourly intervals?

System Preferences/Energy Saver - check to make sure Wake for network access isn't checked.
If that doesn't fix it, see this discussion for the post by Linc Davis.

Ocassionaly I cannot wake my iMac and I am forced to restart.

    Hey aristoklis,
To start off, I would try resetting the SMC to see if that resolves the issue. You can read how to here:

  • Hi can anyone help with a mac that had magnet put on it. I turned it on and then off but a white screen appears with a file with a question mark on it?

Hi can anyone help with a mac that had magnet put on it. I turned it on and then off but a white screen appears with a file with a question mark on it?

File icon with ? mark on it means it can't read from the hard drive. The hard drive is now wiped or bad. If just wiped then you will need to reinstall your operating system, OS X. If bad you will need to replace the drive.
Start with booting the computer from the OS X install DVD that came with your system. If the Mac came with Lion Pre-Installed then you use the Lion internet recovery system to reinstall (Hold down Command+r keys or Command+Option+r keys to boot the computer from over the internet to the Lion recovery HD system).
    Good Luck.

FaceTime can run in the version of OS X that you currently have. To get Messageyou need Mountain Lion. The protocol used by Messages is iMeassage.
The question is does your MBP meet the specs for Mountain Lion.
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)

Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed

8 GB or more of available space
