ARD redraw speed compared to microsoft remote desktop

i use the microsoft remote desktop to control windows boxes at home and work. i also use ARD to control mac nodes from another mac.
in comparison the ARD system is a SLUG. MS's application has far better performance. keep in mind i do realize that the display quality on the mac you are choosing to control can be reduced to allow better refresh but there is a huge discrepancy between the two products.
my question is - do you all notice this as well or do i have something configured wrong. any one doing and experiencing the same thing as me?

Hi
There does seem to be performance differences between one VNC package and another. Strictly speaking it should not make any difference. What I have noticed is ARD runs more smoothly when internal DNS services are configured, however I am not an expert.
'Chicken of the VNC' seems to work smoother/faster (when it does not crash!) than ARD does, but again you dont get what is available in ARD. So far I cant get Chicken of the VNC to work at all on an Intel Mac.
There are alternatives to ARD:
http://www.pure-mac.com/remote.html
and
http://www.redstonesoftware.com/products/vine/server/vineosx/index.html
and also
http://swik.net/VNC+osx
This link explains things quite well though as well as offereing an OpenSource server and client package for download which you build yourself:
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/dtg/attarchive/vnc/start.html
Some of the contributors to these forums have mentioned Vine. Apart from 'Chicken' and OSXvnc I dont recall mention of anything else.

  • Rdp://full%20address=s: IP or DNS Name is not user friendly... Can rdp:// IP or DNS Name be assumed as the full address in Microsoft Remote Desktop?

We would like to request Microsoft Remote Desktop (MRD) to behave the same as the open source CoRD.app on OS X with respect URL resolution.
Example:MRD will resolve from Terminal rdp://full%20address=s:<IP or DNS Name>, but not rdp://<IP or DNS Name>
As the OS will respect any of the following protocols in Terminal or browser:
    afp://<username>@<IP or DNS Name>
    cifs://<username>@<IP or DNS Name>
    ftp://<username>@<IP or DNS Name>
    ftps://<username>@<IP or DNS Name>
    http://<username>@<IP or DNS Name>
    https://<username>@<IP or DNS Name>
    smb://<username>@<IP or DNS Name>
    ssh://<username>@<IP or DNS Name>
    vnc://<username>@<IP or DNS Name>
(<username> can be omitted to force authentication at connection)  it seems slightly redundant to force "full%20address=s:" in the URL.
Can Version 8.0.1.6 be modified address this request?
What is the proper way to report an enhancement request or bug?
    Thank you for your consideration.

    Hi,
From your description it appears that you want to modify the pattern for assigning the rdp full address but this doesn’t support as per your requirement. That is the default string which we need to have for passing full address.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Can't connect to windows 7 machine using microsoft remote desktop connection

I am unable to connect from my home network to the Windows 7 Professional machine at my office, using either Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection (2.1.1) for Mac or the open source CoRD program.
When connected to the office network (which is running MS Small Business Server 2011 Standard) both CoRD and MS RDC will connect to my desktop machine just fine! (My MacBook Pro runs Mountain Lion.)
From my home network, MS RDC will complain that it cannot find the Windows computer if I just use the Windows computer name. If I use the Windows machine's iPV4 address, it works on it for a minute and then tosses up this error message:
Using the IP address of the Windows machine, CoRD just grinds away for a minute or so and then times out.
I should add that using Internet Exporer under Parallels from home, I can get a little closer to success (after fidding around with ActiveX controls for a bit). I will get to the Windows login screen, but then I am told that my user password is wrong (which makes no sense at all)!
Okay, geniuses, have at it, and thanks in advance!!

  • Microsoft Remote Desktop app ios7 to Windows 8.1 Pro

For anyone using an iPad to remote desktop to your Windows 8.1 pro 64 bit computer, I recently posted the following distress call in the Microsoft Community Windows - Windows 8.1 - Other Windows apps by Microsoft - Other.
A Microsoft Support Engineer there suggested I post it here instead. The 1st part is the distress part, the 2nd part is how I finally solved it and then a different problem started ...
    Part 1
Help, I'm going crazy trying to get this Microsoft Remote Desktop app on ios7 to connect to my computer running Windows 8.1.
I've added my computer name, user name and password, but even though it starts to connect it never does and gives me an error message saying:
    Timeout while resolving hostname
I've set up my computer to allow remote connections and allow connections only from computers running blah, blah, blah.
    What am I doing wrong?
In the past I was able to use logmein free without any problems until they stopped the free version. I can also get through using Team Viewer, so why won't the RD Client app work?
    Part 2
Doesn't matter now as I ended up working out that it didn't work with my computer name. What I had to do is go to cmd and type ipconfig to find
the right ip address and insert it where it asked for computer name and it worked! Of course, then it kept disconnecting, so I've totally abandoned it and will use Team Viewer instead (until I'm willing to try again).
So that's where I'm up to.
I didn't find anything useful in this TechNet article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn473013.aspx
So any suggestions on how to make Microsoft's RD Client app on ios work without disconnecting all the time?

    Hi,
For this issue,as Milos said, using the host name requires your network to resolve the host name properly through DNS.
So this issue is related to DNS.In many home network configurations only the IP address will work properly.
Regarding DNS,I suggest you check the configuration on the ipad.
Regarding how to add host name to IOS,I suggest you contact apple support for help.

  • Cut/Paste not working in Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac

    Sirs,
I am using Microsoft Remote Desktop V8.05 build 24428 on a Mac under the latest Mavericks OS, and I find that Cut and Paste are not working. When I paste on Remote Desktop Windows always pastes the last thing cut/copied under the Windows remote session,
rather than whatever I just cut/copied in another Mac window.
I am well  aware that the keystrokes are different, and I tried to follow the instructions on another question which indicated that I should select the console session  checkbox on Remote Desktop's 'Connection' configuration window. However Remote
Desktop no longer seems to have that option ... the topmost line now shows 'Admin Console' and checking it did not help with cut/paste.
I hope you can tell me how to get this working as cut/paste is a great convenience.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Clipboard redirection is not supported in current versions of Microsoft Remote Desktop. However, I will help to submit this as customer wish to the product team.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Error 500 from Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac and for iOS but not for Windows

I am running Windows Server Standard 2012 as a basic File server and Remote Access Server.  I am able to log into to Server remotely using Windows Remote Desktop Client on Windows 7 and 8 machines without problems
When I try to log in using outside the local network using MRD version 8.0.24308 using OS X 10.9.1 or using iOS 7.0.4, I get the following error:
" The gateway failed to connect with the message: 500 Internal Server Error"
I can also log in remotely WITHIN the local network on a Mac or iOS device, it works without getting an error
    Any Ideas?

My IT person has tried all these and I still get a 500 error when I log in from Microsoft Remote Desktop 8.5.
Here is part of the MRD log dump (not clear where to send the log since MRD doesn't provide an address when you dump the log into email):

  • How can I install Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX Control

I am trying to connect to my pc at work from home. This is the message I get.
This portion of the Remote Web Workplace requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX Control. Your browser's security settings may be preventing you from downloading ActiveX controls. Adjust these settings, and try to connect again.
I have looked through all the add-ons available and can't find it to add on. Nor can I find a relevant security setting to change.
I am running firefox 28.0 on Windows 7 Professional.

ActiveX controls are specific to Internet Explorer.

You can try opening Internet Explorer inside a Firefox tab with the following add-on.

  • Issues with Microsoft Remote Desktop: inconsistent directory redirection

    Hi,
I recently upgraded from OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) to Yosemite. I have issues redirecting directories from my MacBook Pro to the target Windows host. The odd thing is, redirection works for some directories and not for others.
I am running Microsoft Remote Desktop 8.0.13. The version of Yosemite is 10.10.1 (14B25)
The directories I am trying to redirect are (in the order configured in MS RD):
/Users/Shared/Projects-Office/PRO-2014-07-ABC_Aabcd_Aabcde-Aabcdefghi          [Replaced the characters in the last directory for security purposes]
    /scratch/xchange-buffer
    /Volumes/MyPassportStudio/Files-MPS/PRO-ABC
Redirection works for #2 bot not for the others. This is the list of configuration items I have done:
All three directories have been shared identically using System Properties
File permissions for directory # 1 and its parent directories are:
      Start directory: /Users/Shared/Projects-Office/PRO-2014-07-ABC_Aabcd_Aabcde-Aabcdefghi
    drwxrwsr-x 24 me  shared  816 Jan 12 12:27 /Users/Shared/Projects-Office/PRO-2014-07-ABC_Aabcd_Aabcde-Aabcdefghi
    drwxrwxr-x 23 metoo  shared  782 Sep  9  2014 /Users/Shared/Projects-Office
    drwxrwsr-x  18 root  shared  612 Dec 13 21:35 /Users/Shared
    drwxr-xr-x  10 root  admin  340 Dec 15 12:08 /Users
File permissions for directory #2 and its parent directories are:
      Start directory: /scratch/xchange-buffer
    drwx---r-x  74 me  shared  2516 Jan 12 12:26 /scratch/xchange-buffer
    drwxr-sr-x  15 me  wheel  510 Jun 27  2014 /scratch
File permissions for directory # 3 and its parent directories are:
      Start directory: /Volumes/MyPassportStudio/Files-MPS/PRO-RSI
    drwxr-xr-x@ 7 me  staff  238 Feb 19 15:42 /Volumes/MyPassportStudio/Files-MPS/PRO-RSI
    drwxr-xr-x@ 17 me  staff  578 Dec 29 16:44 /Volumes/MyPassportStudio/Files-MPS
    drwx------@ 30 me  staff  1088 Jan 30 08:18 /Volumes/MyPassportStudio
    drwxrwxrwt@ 6 root  admin  204 Mar 17 21:09 /Volumes
MS Remote Desktop runs with ID me
When attempting to access directory # 1 through RDP/Windows host, the following is shown in the system.log file (/var/log)
    Mar 18 14:18:26 My-Host.local sandboxd[223] ([5154]): Microsoft Remote(5154) deny file-read-data /Users/Shared/Projects-Office/PRO-2014-07-ABC_Aabcd_Aabcde-Aabcdefghi
Any ideas as to why this behavior? Can sandboxd be configured to allow access to RDP to read specified directories?
    Thank you.
    Omar

  • Trying to download microsoft remote desktop and it keeps failing

trying to download microsoft remote desktop from the app store and midway through the install, i get a message that app failed to download and to try again from purchases, that also fails.

It happenned to me, too. I talked to apple support on the phone, and they helped me to get it download. which turned out to be a waste of my time because the microsoft remote desktop app doesn't work to begin with. even when it downloads, it will crash. it is just a buggy/ faulty program.

  • Microsoft Remote Desktop - Works on 10.4 but not on 10.5

I know that this is an OS 10.5 forum but the Mactopia website is useless and the forum there is non-responsive. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on why I'm able to connect to my office XP machine using 10.4 on an old powerbook over a wireless network but not able to connect using 10.5 on a newer iMac on the same network.
    Thoughts are appreciated.

I've used Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Mac OS X Client
    <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/remote-desktop/default.mspx>
And I've used CoRD (Microsoft RDC Screen Sharing)
    <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30808>
    successfully on 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6.
Are they the same version? And is that the latest version from Microsoft?
I assume all other networking stuff is working OK.
Have you tried the XP system's IP address, just in case it is a naming issue?
    Does RDC connect at all?
Do you get the chance to login?
How far do you get and what kind of error/failure do you see?

  • Can't connect remote PC with Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac after using a new router

I'm using a Windows 8.1 computer as a HTPC to download files and I set it logins automatically and I just need to press the power button then use RD for Mac to control the HTPC without extra monitor, keyboard...
Here is the problem: After I took my Mac and HTPC to another place, I can't connect it with new router now. (I change the PC name to new local IP, nothing else changed)
    It shows on screen that:
Unable to connect to remote PC. Please verify Remote Desktop is enabled, the remote PC is turned on and available on the network, and then try again.
I can use shared disk drive of the HTPC on my Mac so I know the connection works.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.

  • Downgrade Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Mac

Is there a way to downgrade to a previous version of the microsoft remote desktop client for mac? We are experiencing issues with one of our published remote apps (regarding window focus i.e. which window of the open application is at the front of the
users screen) since upgrading to 8.0.9. This application was OK in 8.0.5. Can we revert to an older version?

We are also experiencing similar issues regarding window sizes and display settings with our remote resources, since upgrading. We are using remote desktop application for iPhone/iPad. Upon opening of our Remote App, although we have set the command-line
argument to open to full screen, we see the application resizing 3 times before it finally opens - and it does not open in full screen. Please assist.
