ARD, screen share and a second monitor

I have a 2008 20 inch iMac and 13" aluminium macbook. I wanted to use the iMacs screen with my macbook and decided to get ard (as it was kind of cheap on the app store).
I was a bit disheartened when I found that, when controlling the macbbok from the imac, I couldn't make the window go full screen. I understand this was a resolution issue that couldn't be gotten around.
However did find out that if set used ARD's screen share (rather than the light version that comes with OSX) that I could get full screen by reducing the resolution of the iMac.
However when I plug an external monitor into the macbook it all goes wrong. If I am using the OSX version of screen share (light) then I can choose to show only one display. If I use the ARD version I don't have that option and can only view both screens.
What I had hope for was to be able to use the fullscreen capability of ARDs screen share with my macbook with a second screen attached, but only view the macbook screen on my iMac.
Is there a way of achieving this with ARD. Or am I going to have to try an alternative software?
Thanks
Gareth

The obvious choice for an Apple display is the 24-inch LED (backlit) Cinema Display. It as the same Mini DisplayPort connector, and it will give you a few more USB ports. But it as some extra features that may not be necessary for use with an iMac, such as its own iSight camera, built-in speakers, and a power connector for use with MacBooks. And it costs $899 retail. But it would certainly look nice next to an aluminum iMac.

For a non-Apple display, there are many choices. They are generally cheaper. The standard digital connector is DVI. You can also use a display with a VGA connector, but DVI would be better if you are getting a new display. If your iMac is a 24-inch model, its built-in display has 1920x1200 native resolution. That would be a good choice for an external display, typically 23 or 24 inch. You can go all the way up to 2560x1600, which is typically a 30-inch display (including Apple's model). You can even get one with Dell branding that works.

Your choice depends on how much you can afford to spend and how big (in terms of resolution) you want it to be.

Lol, figured out the first part. Just for those who may be searching, when you click on the Display Preferences, and click on the arraingment tab... it not only shows where your two screens will be displayed, but the WHITE BAR at the top of one screen is the dock/toolbar. Click and hold to grab this and just slide it over to the screen you'd like it to be on.
You have to release it IN the screen box, not on top of it... and it should pop right over to the new (or old) screen. At any rate, you can put the dock on either (or any) screen that you prefer.
I am thinking of ordering more of these. Lol. 3 monitor setup seems like it would be crazy good.
Still looking for the answer to keeping the new 16" screen on the right without switching between screen #s with that... not expose... Lion feature.
Thanks. Hope my other question has an answer out here.

  • Screen flickering on my second monitor

I just updated to Mountain Lion and I have screen flickering on my second monitor. How do I get rid of the flickering? It seems to happen when I move a window around, or scroll on that screen.

Are you using the TV as an extended desktop or as a mirrored display?

  • Can't access the web but can screen share and secure shell on my network???

    Hi,
I don't know if this is relevant, but I installed a security patch along with a safari patch the other day and the next morning, I could not access the internet, however I can do things like screen share and ssh. I cannot however view internal websites on my network, whether I'm connected via airport or ethernet cable (attached to either time capsule or the modem directly). Whenever I try to go to a website in either firefox or Safari, I get a message saying I'm not connected to the internet and a "Network Diagnostics" button (which says it cannot fix my problem). Here is what I've tried:
    -Repair Disk (everything OK)
    -Repair Permissions
    -Restart computer
-Turn Airport card off then on
-Restart modem and routers, one by one in daisy chain order (and then restarted computer)
    -Tried different browsers
-Tried connecting directly to modem via Ethernet cable in addition to wireless
-Restored the System from a time-capsule backup from Sept. 6th (noticed the problem on the 10th)
    -Turned off my firewall
-Created a new user account and tried it
-Let my computer remain off for a half hour
    -Zapped the p-ram
    Here's what I've confirmed I CAN'T do:
-Access the web via either Safari or firefox (haven't tried any other browsers)
    -Access the Software Update Server
-My iCal calendars cannot access the webdav server
Surprisingly, here's what I've confirmed I CAN do:
-Ping other computers on my network
-Use the Screen Sharing App. with computers on my network
-Access the internet from every other computer on my network (4 of them)
-ssh to other computers on my network
I've been using my computer infrequently lately, and I'm not sure when the last time was I accessed the internet or for that matter when I performed the security patching, but I'm pretty sure it was within the last week and a half. I really don't want to try restoring from an earlier backup, but I'm reaching the end of my rope. Anyone have any other ideas? I'm fresh out.
    Rob

The problem was either the Security Patch 2010-005 or the Safari update (though I don't have the version number in front of me). Note, I had ignored the iTunes 10 update. I assume that I must have miscalculated the date I performed the updates because the problem persisted after restore from a Sept. 6th backup off my time capsule.
I went to the Apple Store and they were able to restore full internet access by performing a 10.5.8 combo-update. When we ran Software Update at the Apple Store, the 3 updates were again there available for download, but I am going to ignore them all because of this issue. The people at the apple store agreed that it was the update which caused the problem.

  • Screen share and simultaneous web cam

    Hi all,
I have a 7 day trial premium account.  When I make a video call and then share my screen, my video feed is then turned off.  Is this functioning as designed?
When looking for an answer to this question I was under the impression that both screen share and web cam (from one caller) could be used simulataneously.

  • Can I have separate pages (using Microsoft word for mac 2011) utilizing a new iMac and a second monitor?

Hardware - new iMac 21.7, Software Mirosoft word for Mac 2011.
I presently adjust the text to allow two pages on my iMac monitor.
If I add a second monitor can I have two different pages on it so I can
see four consecutive pages (e.g. pages 31 and 32 on the iMac and pages
33 and 34 on the second monitor)?  I am sure I can move items like
pictures from one monitor to the other, but will the word processing
software indicated above work like I would like it to?

why would one of the pages be split?
Because you'd stretch the Word window across both displays and the screen bezels would be larger than the page split. The page spacer in Word is much smaller than any bezel I've seen, so the two bezels would cause it to break up a page somewhere.

  • Full screen videos/streams on second monitor won't stay full screen while using another window on other monitor

Whenever I open and then full screen a video or stream of any kind, I am unable to use another window of Firefox while the video/stream maintains full screen. When I click off the video/stream it reverts back to the smaller screen. Is there any way to change this?

  • Extending the desk top, adding a second monitor/screen

    Hi,
I bought an Apple Mini-DVI to VGA adapter that allows me to plug my 20" vga monitor into my imac so that I can have more screen space. I had hoped to be able to drag files over to the 20" screen. That works, but when plugged into my imac, the 20" screen is blurry, and I can't look at it for more than five minutes without getting a headache. If I hook up the 20" screen to my pc, I can work on it all day.
I got the idea to add my 20" monitor to my imac after reading posts here on the forum, which all gushed about how great the result was. I went into the Genius Bar to ask about the blurriness I was experiencing, and they told me to call Apple Care. Apple Care didn't know what to do, and after putting me on hold several times, they said the blurriness was "normal distortion" from the adapter. Well, then in my opinion, the adapter is useless.
Is there anything I can do, or should I return the adapter?

Thats strange, I have the same set up as you and the second monitor works fine with the Mini-DVI to VGA adaptor. The only thing i could suggest would be to try connecting another monitor to the Mac and see if you have the same problem. If not, it must be the monitor.

  • How do I get my Mac Pro to see the second monitor through a video splitter and/or switcher?

In a recording studio we have a Mac Pro with two video display monitors in the control room and we want to be able to show the content of the second monitor to the person in the recording room on a big display monitor there. However, when we interpose a switcher or splitter between the computer and the second monitor so that we can (with a switcher) switch the second monitor signal from the control room monitor to the record room monitor or (with a splitter) split the signal to go to both monitors, we have no luck. On startup the computer does not see the monitor through the switcher, so it doesn't recognize its existence. If we start the computer up without the switcher in the signal chain, it sees the second monitor just fine, and (weirdly enough) we can then change the cabling to interpose the switch, which then works to switch back and forth between second monitors (control room and record room), but that cable swapping's a royal PITA. We want a simple solution that will allow us to start up the computer, see the second monitor in the control room, then choose to show it to the person in the record room with a simple flip of the switch (or even better, split the signal so it's available both places). The splitter we've tried most recently is this one: http://tinyurl.com/curen39 I'd appreciate any advice from people who have tried this configuration or something similar with success. We have a full ProTools HD Accel 3 system installed, so there's no room to install a second video card. Thanks.

Thanks for the response! Yes, it's a 5x70 video card, a 5770 I believe. In any case, it does have the three ports, but (a not-well documented fact) that doesn't mean one can really get three full-resolution signals out of it at one time, as you alluded to in your message. So, yes, we did try hooking all three up directly to the computer, but the computer would only recognize two of those monitors, and the only way to get it to "de-recognize" the second monitor and recognize the third monitor was to physically disconnect the second monitor.
I did say when you want to connect three monitors to 5x70's there are some rules to adhere to.  These are covered in the first two apple docs mentioned above, or by title:
Mac Pro (Mid 2010), Mac Pro (Early 2009): Issues with three displays and multiple DVI, HDMI connections
Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Supported display configurations
The general gist of these rules is that to drive three monitor son a 5x70 you need two active adapters.  That is why one of your monitors was disabled when you tried to add a third.
Here's a good explanation of what's going in here and why you need two active adapters on these cards:
Active vs. Passive Displayport adapters *the truth*
If you use DVI monitors and any of them have resolutions less than 1920 x 1200 then you can use single link active adapters. The "AMD Eyefinity Validated Dongles" chart shows some active (and passive) adapters that are acceptable.  For example of a single link DVI active adapter is the Accell B087B-006B.  An example of a dual link DVI active adapter would be the one from monoprice.com if you need to connect monitors with a resolution greater than 1920 x 1200.
I'm doubtful that SwitchResX would be able to convince the computer that there were only two monitors connected and direct the second monitor signal to the correct place, but it certainly seems worth a try, so thanks for the idea! Any other ideas are still welcome in the meantime.
I'm not doubtful.  It is a very powerful utility for dealing with all aspects of multiple monitor configurations (they call them "Display Sets") complete with forcing EDID information if necessary.  The different configurations can be controlled with a (contextual) menu and/or hot key.
SwitchResX is academic at this point if you want to have all three monitors connected.  You would need to get that working first.  Then use SwitchResX to vary the configuration combinations.  So if you go this route the "name of the game" is figure out the active adapters you need.
I only described in general terms above about the adapters since you never said exactly what kind of connections these monitors require (single link DVI, dual link DVI, hdmi, mini-displayport, vga).

  • How can I use screen share of my mac mini?  Problems validating

I recently purchased a mac mini to act as my home media server for audio as my airport express was not playing nicely with my Peachtree DAC.  Anyway, I have set up sharing on the mac mini and can't figure out how to connect from my wife's Macbook, or her iPad.  (I use a PC, so would welcome advice if available on how to connect across platforms as well.)  My goal is to set up the mac mini without a monitor or keyboard connected to it and have it sit with our main stereo.
I am able to connect to the mac mini via my wife's macbook IF I ask for permission and I grant it from the mac mini.  However, I am unable to connect no matter what I try if I try to log in as a registered user.  I have tried to add her as a user to the mac mini, I have tried to log in as a guest, and I have tried to log in with a password but no matter what I try, I get an authentication error when I try to log in as an authorized user.  For more clarity, here is what I have tried:
    1.  Added authorized users on the mac mini.  I created a user name for "jeff", "maureen", and "lastname_maureen" on the mac mini and provided a password for each user.  "jeff" and "maureen" are just created on the mac mini, and "lastname_maureen" is the user name of my wife's computer.  I confirmed the passwords, and still am unable to connect.  I have allowed any user on the network to access screen share, and no matter what I do I get an authentication error.  Again, if I attempt to log in from my wife's computer by asking permission, it works fine but I can't figure out how to set up an account to login.  Please help.  Thanks!

Have you tried connecting one to the HDMI output, and another to the Thunderbolt port (with the appropriate Mini DisplayPort-to-other connection adapter as needed)?

  • Second monitor stopped working on upgrade to 10.10

I recently upgraded my mid 2010 Mac Pro from 10.6.8 to 10.10.1. This upgrade resulted in the loss of signal to my second monitor. The primary monitor connects via an hdmi/vga adaptor and the second monitor uses the video card vga connection. Both monitors worked fine until the upgrade. After the upgrade the main monitor works fine. The second monitor is recognized and appears in the system preferences-Displays as well as the System Report-Graphics/Displays. Looking the other way the computer connection is recognized by the monitor. The second monitor is black screen with a no-signal message. I have checked all connections, reset the prom and tried various connects and dis-connects of the video cables and restarts all with expected results just no picture on display two. I have not yet reset the SMC because I am not familiar with any associated consequences. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Resetting SMC could solve the problem, though try reverse the connection way(main monitor connect DVI directly and second one via the adapter) could solve the problem.
What's video card are you using by the way?

  • Mac Pro Freezes on Startup with Second Monitor Connected

I have a base model Mac Pro with OS X Mavericks that is fully updated. When the computer boots, if my second monitor is connected, it begins to load the login screen and freezes before it has fully loaded. The second monitor is mostly black with a few blocks of color instead of the solid grey it should be. If I disconnect the second monitor and reboot the machine, it starts up fine and the second monitor can be connected without issue anytime after the login screen has fully loaded.
I am using two identical Asus monitors with Thunderbolt to DVI adapters.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this is occurring? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I have the same problem with both Mac Pro (Office and Home)
The office's one have 2 Dell P2412H monitors with DVI adapter
The home's one have 2 Samsung 27" monitors width HDMI connections
Both have OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
If i don't unplug a monitor, the OS X when have to start the graphics for the login freeze

  • Slow preview on second monitor

    Hello
I'm using two monitors with LR5, and the second monitor is the preview screen.
I find the preview on the second monitor to be painfully slow in both the Library and Develop modules:
    1) If I am the Develop module, and I move to the next photo, and zoom the preview to 100% (or if it is already at 100%), it take a minute, literally, for the preview to display correctly.
    2) In the Develop module, sometimes the display does not update correctly at all. If I adjust a slider on the Details tab, however slightly, the preview then updates almost immediately.
    3) In the Library module, if I switch the main window to single photo view, and view 100%, then, as I browse the photos, the main window updates very quickly, but the preview window lags behind.
I'm working with Fuji X-Trans RAF files, and this maybe this si the issue? JPGs update almost immediately in the preview window in both modules.
Does anyone have a similar experience?
