ARD - shows aktivities under "CURRENT STATUS"

Hallo...
i'm a little bit unsure because my ARD (AppelRemoteDesktop) shows activities in my Networklist under the tab "CURRENT STATUS"
the tab displays "inactive since 9h" but i dont't work on my Server at this time...
So what kind of activities are perceived from ARD to change the status of inactivities
....also internal processes such as Cron-jobs and stuff like that or ONLY the CLIENT-LOGIN?

AFAIK, the 'idle' time is based on GUI activity only - such as logging, logging out, launching applications, etc.
cron tasks and background tasks (such as the web server, file servers, open directory servers, etc.) have no impact on the ARD 'idle' time - the server could be 100% utilized by background processes and ARD would still report 'idle'.
If your server is reporting idle for 9 hours then some even happened 9 hours ago - either someone logged into the GUI, or logged out.
You can use the command-line utility last to view the login history for this machine.

ARD 3.2.2 - Current Status - Screen Sharing Available

Hello,
like several other users i do have a problem with some of our mac client computers in ARD 3.2.2
Usually those Macs do display a Current Status in ARD like:
Idle (time)
or
Available
which we would call an expected state.
Unfortunally some macs tend to show another status:
"Screen Sharing Available".
This other status results in: a working screen sharing in ARD
BUT other tasks like i.e. UNIX Commands send from ARD to this hosts just dont work as ARD end in the following error message:
The Remote Desktop Client software is not active on HOSTNAME
So as a quick test i ssh'ed into 2 macs, one of those was affected by the problem. Comparing the output of
ls -la | grep Remote
and the result is totally same.
So both macs showed me:
AppleVNServer
ARDHelper
ARDAgent
Then i checked the firewalls on those macs and each firewall has the default ports 5900 & 3283.
The only problem here is that i cant define UDP or TCP on 10.3.9 Macs.
The macs do run Mac OS X versions from 10.3.9 up to 10.5.6
Sometimes a simple reboot fixes the "Screen Sharing Available" issue.
Right now i am wondering how to fix this issue as some threads do suggest re-checking firewall settings ( which i did ) others suggest using a local administrator insteed of the admins name in Sharing.
Right now none of those hints worked for me and i am wondering if this is a known bug and if there is a known solution.

I have been experiencing the same problem now for months -- various Macs on my network that I control/administer with ARD 3.2.2 intermittently displaying a status of "Screen Sharing Available".
After reading through this thread, I started poking around in System Preferences on my client Mac (from which I control/administer the others), and I appear to have fixed my problem! I have no idea if this will help anyone else, but here's what I did:
In the "Security" preference pane of "System Preferences", I clicked on the "Firewall" tab. The ensuing window contains a list of applications, each followed by a pop-up menu containing two options: "Block incoming connections" and "Allow incoming connections"
Sure enough, "ARDAgent" was in the list of apps and sure enough, it's setting was "Block incoming connections". I changed this setting to "Allow incoming connections", switched back Apple Remote Desktop, and hit Command-Y to refresh the listing of ARD computers on my network (I did not even quit and re-launch ARD). The list was immediately updated, and ALL of ones that had been showing "Screen Sharing Available" in the "Current Status" column switched to "Available" or "Idle (time)" and their icons switched from pale blue to the normal, darker blue.
Problem solved (at least for now)! Will report back any changes/updates.
Additional information, for those that are interested:
I have 12 Macs on my office LAN that I control remotely from the iMac on my desk (same office, same subnet). All are running ARD 3.2.2.
The iMac on my desk is currently running Mac OS X 10.5.6. It is a first-get Intel iMac.
The 12 Macs on the network are running various versions of OS X from 10.3.9 to 10.5.6. All but one are older PPC Macs; one is a newer, aluminum Intel iMac. As of this morning, all three that are running Leopard were working correctly with ARD, while the results were mixed with the others running both Tiger and Panther. From this, I can only conclude the OS version on the various server Macs makes no difference with regard to this problem, although it MAY be that those running Leopard are immune. I cannot be sure of that, however.

This same thing happened too me. I ordered items on monday and now magically on the black friday sale today, I order more items and suddenly my information is not valid?
The response given is a joke. I am an elite member and if the only thing you can give your customers is a sorry and look at your information again then I will not making major purchases at best buy anymore.

Current Status Authenticating

All of the ARD clients show up in the list under Current Status as "Authenticating"
I can control these clients but can't get Reports or install packages.
Any ideas?

When you added the client to ARD, did you use bonjour to find the computer? or did you use network range scanning / manually adding the ip addres?
have you tried getting info on one of the computer records, and clicking the edit button, clicking on any field, and then clicking save? This will some times force ARD to update the client "status".
if that dosen't work, have you tried deleting and re-adding the client?
have you tried editing a computer record, and changing the reporting time to run a few minutes from now, waiting for that reporting time to pass. If the statu of the computer udpate , try pulling a report / installing a package.
you could also check to make sure the wirewall is off on your ard computer and the client. (to rule out firewall issues).
I assume this is over your local network and not the internet?

Showing buttons under action

Hey guys,
I tried this tutorial

and others that are very similar. But I'm having problems getting
the buttons to show up in the actions area (step 7). I have tried
so many times and still can't get the buttons to show up under the
scene, just the layer and frame show up under 'current selection'.
So basically if I import an image, convert to symbol > button,
double click the image to do a few things with the up/down, then I
get back to the main area, I right-click, press actions and the
button does not show up for my to put getURL.
I hope the above is useful and was hoping some one can help
me out or give me some things that I might be doing wrong? Thanks

Ok I was using CS3 and I was told that you can't put code in
symbols anymore. So all I had to do was:
File > Publish Settings > Flash Player 8

Inconsistent 'Name' and 'Current Status' restricting ARD

I'm running ARD 3.2 Admin on an Intel iMac and am connecting to various clients on several subnets other than my own. All clients are at v3.2.1. The only way I could think of to really explain the problem is to show a picture of it:

The first two computers on the list are shown to be offline. However, I can still reach and control the first one on the list, while the second one actually is offline. The next 18 show the computer name correctly as given in the Sharing preference pane. The next four do NOT show the computer name, but instead show the DNS name and the current status says 'Screen Sharing Available'. For these four computers, I am not able to do any of the ARD functions such as installing applications and such - I am only able to share the screen.
Three of the problematic computers are using 10.5.1 and the other one uses 10.4.11, and all have ARD 3.2.1 client running on them. None of the computers has VNC turned on. All of the problem computers are on a subnet other than my own, but so too are most of the computers that are working properly.
I can't find any settings that are different between the good computers and the bad, so any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, it's crippling. Each of these is a laptop that has a unique name, but unless I can tell what laptop is what without going through and observing each one. And I'm dealing with 1000 laptops here, so it's crippling.
All of these laptops have mobile users, but I've set up a test-machine on my subnet with mobile users, and that works fine, so it's not the mobile users causing the problem. It's DEFINITELY something to do with the fact that all these computer are on different subnets and in different VLANs.
And it's crippling. Why oh why won't ARD get more development and support? We need an enterprise level solution (and are willing to pay for one) instead of this bug-riddled piece of rubbish.

My task is based on user decision, intended person will get approve or reject mail for that am using Am using "User decision" and "Mail" steps. Now recipient also receive a work item in SAP Inbox. When executing workitem.. not getting a screen to choose one among approve or reject as part of the user decision.

JavaHelp show under current window

Hi,
I am trying to use JavaHelp (version 2.04). If I press F1, it works. But if I press a JMenuItem, the help system shows, but under the current window. The current window is a modal dialog, I can not bring the JavaHelp window on the top.
How to fix this problem?

Current Status report not updating

Over the past few months I have been getting more and more problems where the "Current Status" indication is wrong. Usually I can get the "Current Status" back to being accure by going to File/Refresh. In the past when something changed the status, like a restart taking the system off line for a few seconds, the current status would update back to Available once the remote computer completed its reboot. Now however there is about an equal chanve that the status indicated in ARD will or will not update automatically when the status changes. If the status remains at ARD Not Available or Sleeping or something else ARD will not control that system till I manually do a refresh and then initiate the new action.
This is more of an irritant than a major problem but it sure would be nice if I could get ARD back to correcting and updating the indicated status correctly. This is with the 3.5.1 ARD Admin software. Any Ideas?

A few things I would suggest you do to determine where the problem lies.
1) Create an Essbase pull sheet in Excel that mimics the form and verify you see the data in Essbase -- you should see it just after your form is saved.
2) Compare the dimensions on your report with those on the Form. I would guess your report has an upper level member that is not dynamically calculated -- if this is true then if you really want the report to show the exact data as the form then update the report appropriately.

A stranger is showing up under "Shared" in my network. "Frank's Macbook Pro." I don't know anyone named Frank and my internet connection (comcast) is secured. I looked under "preferences/sharing" and didn't find a way to "Frank's Macbook Pro" from showing up. Advice? I'm a newbie. Please explain simply. Amy

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

My Ipod Touch Gen 5 will not show up in Itunes but it shows up under "My Computer" help!

I have a new Ipod touch gen 5. It shows up under my computer but not under devices in the side bar like it should with Itunes 11. I'm running the latest firmware for my new Itouch and the latest Itunes. I hope I don't have to uninstall my itunes as I have ALOT of music on it. I dont wanna lose it all. I'm running windows 8 and followed the tutorial to a "T" to try to fix the problem but nothing worked. I did everything except the last step. Even checking my Computer for Updates (Itunes will not run if updates to my PC are needed). Help Please!

Blank Screen in Import Manager under Import Status Tab

Hi Experts,
Problem: Blank Screen in Import Manager under Import Status Tab.
I have opened import manager with source file(excel & xml) and i have also did mapping from source fields to destination fields and also seleted display/key field in match records tab and refreshed it. when I select Import Status tab. I am not able to see any details/status regarding the map which i have done. when i click on excute button.. the source file is sucessfully import and pop up dailogue box shown. I have also checked in Data Manager and data was visible.
But.. at Import Status Tab in import manager.. i am not able to see any details.. it is just showing as white blank screen.
If any one know the solution could you please help me out.

Hi Bharat,
As per New MDM Release we have to Install MDM 7.1 servers on 64 bit machine and GUI's can be installed on 32 machine, whreas if you are using MDM 5.5 Version then 32 bit machine can be used.
Now as you said that you have sucessfully imported the excel file and then you have mapped the filed after that without any error you got the ready to import screen to import the data into MDM database then processwise there is no problem as far as screens are concern i will suggest you please un-install MDM Import Manager GUI and then again install it, your problem would be solved.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Previously Purchased Movie on iTunes No Longer Showing Up Under Purchased Items

I purchased a movie from iTunes in November 2012 (Coldplay: Live 2012) and it wasn't showing up on my AppleTV Purchased movies section (wanting to use the iTunes Extra feature on recent AppleTV 6.2 update). I've checked other threads and it was suggested to check my account for Hidden Purchases. The movie I purchased does not show up under Hidden Purchases.
I then checked Purchased items from the main iTunes page, and I don't even see the movie listed there, even though I have a record of the purchase through my Purchase History under My Account.
Any suggestions on how to get this to show up under my Purchased items on iTunes or AppleTV?

I am having similar problems buying movies. The rights issue occurs even if iTunes change or reduces the price of a movie. I now have to check my saved library of past purchases to confirm I do not already have the movie to avoid buying it again.The latest occurrence was fifth element.
It would be really useful if apple would allow you to download a full copy of your past purchases as it is no longer possible to rely on the iTunes store to match your own downloaded content library and the current licenses it holds. This also plays havoc with genius recommendations for purchases.
It would be nice if apple could buy Time/Warner or another media giant so we could break this monopoly of selling the same content over and over again by simply changing the format or metadata of a product.

Facebook 1.6 App - How do you see your current status?

I just updated to the new FB 1.6 app. It is very slickj. However, I can't find where it shows my current status and I can't find where I can clear my status? Suggestions?

Well you can click on your profile picture, which takes you to your page. &you can see your status that way. And to clear your status, click the "share" button while your status is blank.
