Are 2 USB on front of 'early 2008 Pro' different circuit from ones on back?

I've got an app that needs to pull from 4 USB 2.0 cameras.
Does the 'Early 2008' Mac Pro use different circuits for the front and back USB connections?
If not, what's a reliable USB card that will work in the Mac Pro?

I'm not sure on the data rate yet, as will have to see what the optimum resolution is for the cameras and the software, which is in beta by a very small company in Moscow (small enough to where as they are exhibiting as SIGGRAPH now, there's no one in Moscow to reply to questions) - complicated by the hassle that I'll be running it on 64 bit Win7 64 in bootcamp (like I don't need one more hassle!)
Hopefully, it won't be anywhere near the full 480Mbps for a single camera.
I guess I'll just have to see when they arrive - probably heading down the path to frustration, oh well!

Folder/ file icons are different sizes from one window to another!

Hi there
I am having an extremely annoying problem where all my folders and files (in icon view) are totally different sizes from each other from one window to another. For example, I might click on a folder that's icon is small sized (64x64), but when that folder opens up, the icons of the subfolders inside are huge (276x276) and need to instantly be resized and re-arranged. Then if i continue to open one of these subfolders, the file icons inside it are now medium sized (96x96). Each new folder that I go into on my hard drive will be differently sized and I end up spending ages resizing and re-arranging them before I can do my work. This problem never happened in Leopard and Im despairing of what to do.
Is there a way of setting a default icon size and spacing that can then be applied to every folder and file on the hard drive? I have used the 'Use as defaults' option on the 'View options' window but this doesn't apply it to anywhere else besides the current window you are on.
Surely, Im doing something wrong as Apple could never have overlooked such an obvious problem like this?

The Finder will (theoretically) remember the view settings for each individual folder that you visit. If you have not opened a particular folder before, you should get the default view settings, but once you have changed the view then that is what you will get on subsequent visits. You can erase the previous settings by deleting the (normally invisible) .DS_Store file that is created in a folder when it is opened, but this file can contain other Finder metadata.

Can't boot usb windows 7 installer early 2008 MBP 15"

So I have figured out the keyboard ribbon issue, now heres the next one. The super drive doesn't work on this MBP, and it will not boot from a USB installer. Which is weird, since thats how I installed Mavericks. I'm trying to put Windows 7 Ultimate on it, so I got the ISO from microsoft and used their USB installer creator. Yes I have a legit key. I'm no pirate.
The EFI boot selection screen doesn't show the windows installer. I also tried using bootcamp utility to set it up. No dice. Am I SOL until I get the superdrive installed, or is there a trick to installing it?

Install ISO means you burned DVD installer and did you reduce burn speed? otherwise it is a bad install.
3rd party updates? for security suite? stick to MS Security Essentials instead.

Macbook Pro (early 2008) won't wake from sleep.

I've always had intermittent problems with sleep mode where instead of going to sleep the computer stays awake generating lots of heat and never being able to wake up.
Now, things have changed but are arguably worst. The computer usually seems to go to sleep okay. There's no excess heat and the LED pulses as it should. However, when I try to wake the computer from sleep (open the lid, press keyboard buttons, press power button) nothing happens. The screen just stays blank and eventually I have to hold down the power button to force a powerdown in order to bring the computer back. This is now occuring almost every time I put the computer in sleep mode.
I'm running Vista business SP1 in Bootcamp.
I've tried to uninstall/reinstall the bootcamp drivers but whenever I run the bootcamp setup it just says the setup failed before it could start. When I run the uninstall for Bootcamp services from Vista, it just terminates itself while gathering configuration data.
Anyone know if there's a fix for this?
It doesn't seem to happen under OS X so I suspect some kind of driver issue.

So, I did an "upgrade" re-install of Vista which allowed me to finally uninstall the Bootcamp services and drivers. Upgrading Vista was a pain since I had SP1 installed and my original Vista CD doesn't, so I had to "acquire" an SP1 version of the Vista install CD... Afterwords I reinstalled Bootcamp drivers 2.0 then 2.1 and this didn't really help at all.
I suspect the issue has to do with the Bluetooth hardware and/or drivers. I've had a few BSODs that reference the BTHUB driver and I've noticed that even when the computer is asleep or stuck in the black screen of death when trying to wake from sleep, it remains visible to other bluetooth devices. I tried to connect over the network while it was stuck in the black screen to see if I could figure out what it was doing, but it would not connect to the network in that state.
So I've tried a couple of things. Under device manager, I opened the properties for the bluetooth adaptor and under power management I unchecked the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". I also when into the bluetooth settings in control panel and unchecked the "Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer" option under the options tab.
I've found the computer hasn't had any of the sleep issues since doing these things.
I then re-enabled the "allow computer to turn off this device to save power option" but after a while got a BSOD (0xb8 I think). I'm not sure if that's related or a coincidence, but decided to uncheck that option again.
So far it's been working pretty well. But I'll have to see over the next few days if it continues to be reliable. Hopefully no more sleep or BSOD issues. I should also note I updated the bluetooth drivers under device manager using the download updates automatically, and it chose the generic Microsoft bluetooth drivers over the Apple bluetooth drivers. Re-installing bootcamp drivers didn't override this. Not sure if this is a good or a bad thing.
I'm using a bluetooth mouse so I need the bluetooth adaptor. If you're not using any bluetooth devices with your computer, I'd suggest just disabling the bluetooth adaptor in device manager altogether. Probably increase stability and save power...
Let me know if you have any luck with these settings fixing your wake from sleep problem.

Macbook pro 17 inch early 2008 will not boot from disk

My macbook pro will not boot from from disk. I am running 10.6.8. Tried loading the disk that came with system holding down the C and you can here the drive working. It came back and said to restart computer by holding down the power button and poering it back up. Tried that and nothing. The software I tried to load is 10.5.4 Also tried loading os x snow leopard 10.6. Same thing happens.

Have you reset the SMC? If not, try that.

Is there any way windows 8.1 can be installed on an early 2008 iMac?

     Hello apple community! I've had various desktop maps since the mid-90's, but over the past 6 years I have found myself limited many times due to my computer being incompatible with many third party programs and various games that are only supported by windows. Therefore, I have finally gone out and purchased windows 8.1 from my local best buy to be run alongside Yosemite. I brought in all of my computer specifications and was told that I would be able to run the operating system.
The minimum requirements are as follows:
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
My specs are as follows:
iMac (20-inch, Early 2008)
OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10)
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM: 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (just updated)
Hard disk space: 332.3 GB free of 639.28 GB (plus a new 1 TB external drive that is in the process of being filled)
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
Apparently my computer can only run bootcamp 4 and not bootcamp 5. Therefore, windows 8 is not supported for it can only be installed with bootcamp 5.

However, I've read articles about people possibly getting past these limitations, but they don't exactly follow my issue and may be outdate. Such as, http://www.videograndpa.com/?p=2628. I've seen posts from people in the forms saying that they are running windows 8 on their early 2008 mac, but they are from over a year ago. I've also read that apple may have had support for these operating systems, but dropped them, but the links to this information were broken. Best Buy has agreed to let me return Windows 8.1, but only for store credit. That is not fair if it turns out that I can not install it operating system when I was told I could by their employee.
     So, in conclusion, I'm wondering if anyone knows if I can install Windows 8.1 on my iMac from early 2008 with Yosemite and if they could walk me through it or link me somewhere that can. Thank you for your time.

Don't use a virtual machine, it's kinda cpu intensive. You CAN install windows 8.1 on your 2008 iMac. I know this because just a couple weeks ago I installed an official windows 8.1 disk on my 2009 iMac. You do NOT need to use bootcamp for it although you WILL need the boot camp drivers. Just put the drivers onto a thumb drive. You will need to install them manually, it's really easy though, so don't get discouraged. The only thing you need bootcamp for is to download the drivers onto the thumb drive. You can also download drivers for bootcamp version 5 from the apple website.
Here is how you do it: Go to disk utility inside applications folder and then utilities folder. Add a second partition to your mac and format it as FAT32.
Put the windows disk in your computer and reboot your computer. Hold down the OPTION key and then choose the "windows" disk then hit enter. Follow the instructions.
In the beginning there will be a screen asking you to select which partition you want to install windows on, highlight it, and then click on "format" because it is then going to reformat the partition as NTFS. It only takes a second. Just follow the installation instructions, it's pretty straight forward from there. And just to forewarn you, apple doesn't care to update the drivers for SOUND, people with iMac's running windows don't have sound so you will need a third party sound card adapter with a headphone and microphone jack and use either headphones or an external speaker. I got a cheap one from ebay for just a few bucks. I use the "Syba" brand and it works, it even plays that pretty windows startup sound. All sounds work, even youtube.
Thank me later! By the way, I think you will find that windows 8.1 runs way faster and smoother than mavericks or yosemite. The mac os's have gotten pretty buggy and bloated over the years and so I think we are making a switch to windows at the right time. Everyone is saying how much better microsoft has gotten and I can tell. I have everything pretty much set up how I like it in my windows 8.1 partition and it's pretty fast. Also, it is WORTH IT to pay for the MacDrive software. Just google it. It will enable you to view and change any apple formatted disk/drive, including your mac osx partition on your internal hard drive. This is important for me because all of my music is on my mac partition in itunes and I need it to add music to my iPod classic 160gb but with macdrive I can listen to the music in vlc player or windows media player. I don't think I will install itunes on windows because everyone says the windows version is buggy.

Mac Pro (Early 2008), Tiger Boot

Is my Mac Pro (Early 2008) able to boot from Tiger normally? I 've tried many times but it seems that Tiger has not the necessary drivers for my ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro! Boots, but there is no communication with my graphics card. Is there any way to make it work?
I' ve tried to install Tiger from the DVDs of my MacBook Pro, MacBook and from the DVDs of a friend's previous generation Mac Pro, but not from a Retail Tiger DVD... Do you think that this is my problem?

The only hack is to find a system with 2600M it sounds like.

Cloned system and then reapply the combo update would do if you do have an Intel Tiger system.
I've been using Vista x64 since late '06, before it was RTM forward, and the horror stories of trying to get it to run on some motherboards, BIOS, etc - I have more respect for what people are willing to go through, how different it is on Mac Pro, and the way OS X is tighter controlled to hardware... but it does make for problems.
People held off buying Mac Pro until CS3. And now some are considering buying ref'd units just to run Tiger or wait 3-6 months for things to catch up.
Game developers love 8-cores, cuts down time to compile, test and develop, and will pay dividends down the road in games that unless the power, but most, a lot, of applications really have trouble using more than 4-cores, it is a technical challenge and requires new compilers and tools.

Early 2008 MacBook Pro has no chime/keyboard/USB/video

Since I can no longer view the relevant Apple TS for the famous NVIDIA GPU problem, I'm not sure what the cause of the problem is with my early 2008 MacBook Pro running Mavericks.
I was using it last night to watch a recorded news show while getting ready for dinner and the news show seemed to stop early. Didn't think anything of it at the time because it was time to eat, however I noticed that the browser was still open and the screen was still on, as would have been expected.
After eating, I went to wake up the computer and, while it seemed to be sleeping, which usually happens after about 15 minutes, it wouldn't respond to the keyboard or trackpad. Before long I realized that it also had no USB power. I also can't connect via FireWire or Ethernet.
Since it will not respond to the keyboard, there are a number of options which are not available to me (like resetting NVRAM or starting in Target Disk Mode, etc.).
Since there is a CD inconveniently already in the SuperDrive, I can't start up from the system disc.
I have removed/replaced the RAM, tried resetting the SMC numerous times, and I've quadruple-checked that the keyboard/trackpad ribbon is attached to the logic board. Not sure what other options are available to me.
The main reason that I think it is not the NVIDIA problem is because it seemed in those cases that the keyboard would light, at least the Caps Lock key, and I have nothing except the sleep indicator by the latch and the sound of the optical drive spinning up and then eventually spinning down, oh, and the fans seem to be working.
Any suggestions? Relevant details left out?

No chime means your Mac has not passed it's startup diagnostics.

External desktop drives for early 2008 Mac Pro: USB 2.0 or 3.0 question

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 (OS 10.6.8).
I currently have a 1 TB Fantom Drive with USB 2.0 that I use for the Time Machine. I want to get the second external drive to use as a boot drive so I can install & boot from Mountain Lion to use Maya 2014 3D application software that requires the Mountain Lion OS. For all other applications, I want to stick with Snow Leopard (10.6.8), which works well for me.
Most of the searches I've done for external drives have USB 3.0. Some have USB 3.0/2.0.
Questions:
1. Will one of the USB 3.0-only external drives work with my early 2008 Mac Pro 3,1, which is only equipped for USB 2.0? If so, would I need some sort of adapter? (I realize that the speed would still be USB 2.0 speed.)
2. Or do I need to get the USB 3.0/2.0 external drive (which is more expensive)? I am assuming this would not require any adapter.
3. Will I be able to boot from the external drive with Mountain Lion?

Why are there so many problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro ???

Hi everybody out there using Mac Pro's early 2008,
I found out there is a lot of problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro.
My early 2008 Mac Pro has been repaired ones under warranty and now it stopped working again ! Also see under: Mac Pro early 2008 no chime and does not start up. Why is this ????
It worked well for about 2 years and then it just fails and i had this failing issue twice already !!! Is this just a BAD Apple product or how do you think I need to approach this. Let’s face it, these machine don’t come cheap and you at least expect them to work without problems for 4-5 years. What is happening here ???

What are my options for having my case for my Early 2008 white macbook repaired?

I own an early 2008 white macbook and as most people know they were notorious for ending up with cracks in the plastic body. Well, mine has it's fair share of cracks and the little nob on the bottom used for securing the battery in place has also broken off. The computer still runs great and does everything I need, but the keyboard and trackpad are glitchy, the battery won't stay in place, and it just kind of looks bad with the cracks. How can I go about getting these things fixed? I read that apple was fixing the cases for free for a while if it was within 5 years of purchase but I was NEVER told about this even when I took the laptop into the apple store several times for general questions and I am now beyond 5 years since purchase. I've seen plenty of third party sites to buy new cases on, but is there any chance the apple store would be willing to replace it for me still a this point? Also, since the plastic casing is so prone to cracking is it possible to replace my keyboard with one of the keyboards from the late 2008 aluminum body to avoid future chipping or would this not fit my model?

How do I fix my early 2008 mac pro boot hard disk. Lost everything when it crashed hard, can not reinstal via cd/dvd drive... are there any fix get it boot from dvd drive?

I have an early 2008 MAC PRO Quad Core 3.0ghz processor. 8 Gig of rams, with a 1 Gig memory Radeon 5770 HD Graphic Card running the latest Version of Snow Leopard OS. Last week lighting struck the house take out all of my hard drives (4) thank god the surge protector mitigated the mother board from damaged, use the Parted Magic to check out the motherboard and it intact with no damage. I can boot with the Parted-magic and be able surf and post this question to this forums. I replaced a newly formatted hard drive and trying to installed OS X Mountain Lions to the new drive, but unable to have it boot in my MAC PRO DVD, I get the usual chimes during the booting processed but the screen remain blackout, but able to boot with Parted-Magic to surf the web and access Apple sites/forums.
I am not well verse in using the Parted_Magic to repair or get my-mac to boot normally so I can reinstall OS X. Any help would appreciated.

FBDIMM would be 800MHz. Did you use older slower 667MHz in yours?

So just to be clear.

It was all working fine a couple of days ago. At the time it randomly shut down I was trying to use Boot Camp to create a Windows 7 area,
Whenever you want to install Windows, remove all the drives other than the one Windows goes to. And if you use a dedicated drive YOU DO NOT NEED Boot Camp Assist, unless you use XP, which really is limited and crippled (one processor, 1.9GB RAM support).
And when it freezes, your only choice is to nuke (reformat) and restore or get out that backup CLONE you made before (ie, Step #1 in the Boot Camp Guide).
Sure that whole NTFS / MBR / GUID could be an issue, but you should just have a blank drive or clone.
No don't bother Apple, they seem to not have a good sense about Windows on Mac Pro anyway.
Other than zap pram from cold boot / tried booting with NO drives inside and just 10.6. DVD - should be fine.
You should be fine iwth Windows 7 DVD and one drive, or even XP.
Make sure you take your time and reconnect cards etc properly and any cables.
Booting from OS X DVDs may not work if there is a drive with a totally shot directory or partition table. Put them in FW case and turn on AFTER OS X is booted.

1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When its download finishes, close the installer and open Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable USB drive with Mountain Lion.

4. Close the window and install Mountain Lion
