Are Apple routers better than others?

I have wi-fi at my home and I have problems with AirPlay as it sometimes skips.
I'm thinking of buying Time Capsule and I want to know if it's powerfull enough to work in a normal size house and will it solve AirPlay problem?
Is wi-fi on Time Capsule better than on Motorola VIP1003 router?

The broadcast power of all routers is limited by law. Every manufacturer is running their products at 100%, so there will be very little difference between routers of different manufacturers.
If you have having difficulty now, replacing your router with a Time Capsule will likely not solve your problems.
Instead, you will probably need to look for "extending" or "repeating" devices to provide a stronger signal throughout your house....whether you elect to add the Time Capsule or not.

  • Are wireless routers better than non-wireless ones?

    Hey all,
I've come to this forum, because the last time I had a problem with my computer, this venue definitely gave me the best answers and I learned quite a bit of information.
Anyhow, I have recently moved and want to connect my computer to the optimum online (the long island version of road runner) modem. However, I need a router, because cablevision is too cheap to provide one (even though Verizon does for their DSL service, and it's about 60% of the cost of time warner, but that's not why I'm here...haha). I actually have a few questions regarding this issue.
    1. Is a wireless router going to give me as much as speed as a non-wireless one? (Keep in mind, I live way out east on the island, where it's pretty rural)
    2. I'm concerned about virus protection. My dad's PC is completely infected with viruses. Even though he'll be purchasing a new one in the next few months, I'm concerned that they may infiltrate my computer. I have Virex and I've had no problems whatsoever with viruses (or is it virii), but I want to continue with that clean record. I saw there are some modems with firewall built in. Does that make a difference?
    3. Verizon let me keep their DSL modem with inputs for 4 ethernet cables (the built-in router I suppose). Is there any way I can use this as a router for the cable service? I apologize for this question, but if I can find a use for this modem, I'd like to (and DSL is not available in this area).
Thanks a lot. Happy New Year!
    ~Jeremy

Jeremy, First welcome to the discussions,
Wireless technology is just a few mbs slower than a wired connection, for the most part you won't notice it.
Cabble is different than DSL. With cable you will get better more consistant speeds than you will with DSL.
Normally DSL is furnished through phone lines and the farther you are from the ISP's Servers the slower your connection is. This is not the case with Cable.
You are correct about Viruses. Mac is not to date affected by viruses Trojans and Malware. It is a good idea if for no other reason than peace of mind to have Virex or
    http://www.clamxav.com/
All ISp's have firewalls on there servers, as well as any Router you buy will have a Firewall that is normally configured by typing in 192.168.1.1 in your Browser this will open the Routers Utility settings. This information is with any Routers Paperwork.
Mac OSX has one of the best firewalls you can also set up.
Normally almost all Viruses are sent through e-mail while they won't affect the UNIX operating system when you get an e-mail with a virus you can pass it on to another windows user who can be infected.
If you have the adapter that plugs in to the socket that accepts the Cable in and the Cat5 or Cat6 out then yes you can use it, you will need the Ip Address that your service provides. If your serviceuses Cat 5 or 6 Eternet Cable the technology is the same worldwide. It really depends on what your cable service has furnished you with.
You should be able to run an ethernet cable from your Internet Service Providers Modem ( Instead of plugging it in to your computer) Plug it into the Uplink port of the Verizon Router and try it. Like I said you may have to get into the Utility and set the Ip for you to do away with the other one, you should only need one.
It would however be the hot set up if you can use the Modem Router Combined.
There is also a good chance if they haven't hooked you up yet show the tech that comes to hook you up the Modem Router you have and if he can he will probably use it if you talk real nice.
Remember for the most part a Modem is a Modem, and a Router is a Router. Some have a few different features but the technology is the same and works under the same principles.
    This should help. Don

  • Surfaces that dissipate heat better than others?

I notice there is a pretty noticeable difference in CPU temperature when I have a mid 2010 MBP on my lap rather than on my wooden desk.
Am I imagining things? Are some surfaces better than others when it comes to dissipating heat from the MBP?

What a lot of people don't realize is that the narrow gap between the case bottom and the surface it's on is important to cooling. If you put the laptop on a table, the gap is maintained and air can flow between the bottom and the hard surface. When you put it on your lap, or worse, on a sofa or bed, now there is no airflow between the bottom and it won't throw off heat as easily. On your lap it would be better to put it on a board or one of those lap pillows with a hard table top, both of which would preserve the airflow across the bottom of the case.
The worst case scenario would be the laptop on a bed where the blanket or comforter covers not only the bottom, but the large back vent. Then there would be no airflow at all, and nowhere for the accelerating fans to push the hot air.
As far as materials, the current aluminum's pretty good at throwing off heat. The problem is that people don't like aluminum because it gets hot to the touch. But that's because it's moving the heat to the outside, where you can feel it.

  • Is the apple laptop with 4gb ram and i5 better than other laptop with 6gb ram and i5

is the apple laptop with 4gb ram and i5 better than other laptop with 6gb ram and i5

Well it depends on the age.     http://www.everymac.com/ should help you identify the age of the two models.
Apple may use two processors called i5, but newer models have different optimizations than older models.
The processor is usually not the main affect on speed.  RAM helps, but barely unless everything is on an SSD already.   Hard drive speed is usually the limiting factor of speed on computers.   eSATA hard drives with higher RPM can often yield the fastest results because notebook hard drives tend to be slower that are not SSD, but for those you need either Express/34 or Thunderbolt based adapters.

  • What makes iPad better than other tablets

Hi there! i am planning on buying the new iPad 2 but i want to ask and talk about what makes the iPad better than other tablets particularly Android.
Since its first outing the iPad has come from strenght to strenght with featrures and apps only a smartphone (or even a PC) could dream of.
But in the past few months there has been a tsunami of Android tablets vuying to topple Apple's device. with better features like:
    1. Divx support (in some devices)
    2. better front & rear cameras
    3. better multitasking and customisation options
    4. Android being an "open" platform
    5. video chat with ANY similar device (and not confined to only Android)
    6. better bluetooth option and features (like sending files to ANY device and not confined to only Android)
    7. full DLNA support (in almost all devices now)
    ......and the list goes on.
sure it's not a contest and sure some makers have "copied" features from Apple and made it into their own but i still love Apple devices not because of the lack of features but because the technology really works and the OS just flows really smooth.
so, i want to ask you guys....what makes Apple devices such as the iPad 2 special, unique, desirable and better in many ways than an Android device?
what makes the iPad an investment for me and my family?

Don't get me wrong i am fan of Android but i also am a fan of the iPad 2. but i still can't help with the things the device is lacking and lagging behind with with the Android devices.
sure, the iPad is not a Xoom or a Transformer or a Galaxy tab.
sure, the iOS is fluid and smooth and it just works
sure, Honeycomb 3.0 is full of bugs and it freezes more often than not (i heard)
sure, the Apps Store is still miles away when it comes to apps, games, etc. (although i heard it will be overtaken by the Android Markt by this year in terms of sheer numbers but also quality apps designed/dedicated for tablets by next year)
the Android Amrket might not have "rogue" apps or "stealing user data" but doesn't Apple products have that and do that as well?
sure the iPad doesn't support Flash but even though its a battery hogging software you still enjoy the "full" web (the way it was meant to be viewed) on an Android tablet.
sure, the iPad does have a below 1-megapixel camera which is jurassic really.
but it still doesn't hide the facts like what i mentioned on my previous emails.
for the cheapest wifi-only iPad 2 you pay GBP399
the equivalent 7" Galaxy Tab (which came out months before the ipad 2) you pay GBP399 and that's with 3G, better front & rear facing camera, full Divx capability (without the need of an app), full DLNA capability (without the need of a separate device or server), better and more "open" bluetooth, full Flash compatibility amongst others.
basing on my example above can someone tell me without being biased...what makes the iPad 2 better in many ways?

  • Any Channel Better Than Others?

I have an AppleTv that streams thru our WiFi Airport Extreme network from my iMac in my other office. It stalls & stops alot. Someone suggested I change the channel on my Airport Extreme. There's several different channels. Any one better than another to resist interference? We do have DECT 6.0 phones.

"iStumbler didn't find any other networks."
Very good news. Check again later in the evening as there may be some other networks busy at that time. If you don't see any other networks, you are most fortunate.
Could you explain further what you mean by "The best channel is the one that is the most distance from other channels."
I know this is a bit difficult to understand because the channels interact and overlap with one another. There are really only 3 channels that do not overlap with each other... 1, 6 and 11. If you have no other channels in range and set the Airport Extreme to Automatic, it will likely choose one of these 3 channels. Give it a try.
Now if there were more channels in use around you and for example, you find that someone is using channel 6. Then your best channel choice is either 1 or 11 because they are the most distant from 6. Or, if someone is on 8, then choose 1. The real challenges start when you find out channels 2,5,7 and 10 are all in use. Then you can't choose a channel that does not overlap with one of the others.

  • Is apple mail better than outlook

That is the question I'd like answered please? I am a student and will be installing office for mac but I'd like to know which is the better of the 2 email clients  i.e.. Outlook or Apples built in client? I am asking this because I have an iPhone, iPad and MBP so I want iCloud to work between them all

The answer to that question is very subjective and difficult to answer but I can share some incite based on my own experience. Ultimately the best way to judge is to try them both and see which one you prefer. A couple of thing to keep in mind.
Apple Mail is a better app if you are connecting to mail servers that use the IMAP protocol like iCloud mail, Google Gmail or Yahoo mail whereas Outlook is better if you are connecting to servers that use Microsoft's ActiveSync like an Exchange server.
Outlook integrates contacts and calendar functionality which also work best with ActiveSync servers. On the Mac Contacts and Calendars are handled by separate apps that use the open CalDAV and CardDAV protocols that are used by iCloud and Gmail.
Outlook stores its mail, contacts and calendar data in one large file whereas Apple Mail stores each email as a separate file. If you use Time Machine for backups backing up the Outlook database takes up a lot more room because the entire database file needs to be backed up whereas as with Apple Mail only the new emails files need to be backed taking up very little room in a Time Machine backup.
Ultimately, if you are going to use iCloud for mail, contacts and calendar your will be better served by Apple's apps. If you are connecting to mail, contact and calendar servers that use Microsoft's ActiveSync then Outlook might serve you better.

  • Are 2 drives better than 1

I am not planning on doing any raid. My Question:
If you have 2 drives: 1 for the boot and the other for data:
(250g each). Would that setup be better than one 500g drive in terms of speed etc?
    Just looking for opinions?

Beside of that purpose on the previous post, I prefered split that HD into two for back up and ease of restoring data and system purpose.
So the next time you want to reinstall the OS and all programs I could concentrate on the Os system drive without having to much worry about data which is stored on other drive or if I want to back up data, just concentrate on data drive without worrying about accidently deleted system or part of program files.
    Good Luck.

  • Is Apple RAM really better than others?

I believe i may be having memory issues. I have a Spring 2011 iMac. Came with 2 sticks totaling 4G. I replaced with 16G of Corsair. After intermittent lookups I removed half (8G) and things got better but still the occasional FREEZE. I still have Apple care so I took it in. Apple will not even test the memory if it isn't Apple memory. I just found Apple memory for about $58 for 8G. Should I replace my memory with the Apple RAM? The original RAM looks like this:
What the heck is this brand?
I was thinking if I could get 2 Apple 4G sticks and use the original 4G plus the new 8G, I would have a nice 12G of memory. I use FinalCut X a lot and extra memory always helps. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Apple has been using Hynix RAM for years.
iMac's are not all that picky about brand, but they are very picky about the RAM spec's.
as per > iMac (Mid 2011): Memory specifications your 2011 iMac uses PC3-10600 1333 MHz modules.
If the Corsair RAM Modules that you bought are the correct specs? Then you should have no problem install it along with the original factory 4GB and running a total of 20GB.
I would suspect that you are having one of three different problems.
    1. The Corsair RAM is not the correct spec and while it works, it is causing errors and does not work when matched up with the factory RAM.
    2. The Corsair RAM is the correct spec, but one of the modules is bad. (noting that: the way your holding that Hynix module is liable to damage it)
    3. You are not pushing hard enough to fully seat the modules in the slots. (try pushing real hard on each module with both thumbs as you install them)
Going on that I would install the factory modules back in the original slots that they came in and test the iMac. Then if the Corsair modules are the correct spec, install them in the empty slots and test the iMac.
Then if you are still having a problem..? Like many other RAM suppliers, Corsair does have a life time warranty.

  • How is Apple display better than Samsung?

I am looking at buying a Samsung 23" monitor to hook up to my MacBook pro--I would get an Apple Cinema display but they seem to cost 3 times as much--what are the main differences in quality?

The 23" Samsung most likely uses what is called a TN LCD panel. TN panels are the same kind as used in virtually all notebook computers, including Apple's. TN panels are generally very sensitive to viewing angle. If you own a Mac notebook, or a PC notebook, perhaps you have noticed that tilting the lid/display can have a big affect on the colors you see.
Apple uses a premium LCD panel in their monitors based on a technology called IPS. IPS LCD panels cost more to make, though not three times. Nevertheless, if you really care about color and do color critical work, you should consider an Apple. The Apple will be better in nearly every way, you just need to decide for yourself if it's worth the added expense.

  • Why are two queries better than one

I'm trying to help out our developers who are struggling with the performance of a very simple select statmenent that for some reason is exhibiting some very inexplicable results.
I'll show the SQL as a single statement first.....
    select * from transaction1 t where t.hid in (select distinct h.hid from history1 h,filter1 f where h.fid = f.fid and f.match='value');
transaction 1 has 250k records, history1 has about 100k as does filter1. We know generally the subselect will only return a total of half a dozen or less records (only 1 in our testing here).
Running the above query takes around 7 seconds.
Changing this to a with clause.....
    WITH a as (select distinct h.hid from history1 h,filter1 f where h.fid = f.fid and f.match='value') select * from transaction1 t where t,hid in (select a.hid from a);
and the runtime drops to 3 seconds. But then re-running the first statement again also now takes 3 seconds (so I guess there's some caching going on there).
Now what really puzzles is if we split this into two queries.....
    select distinct h.hid from history1 h,filter1 f where h.fid = f.fid and f.match='value';
This takes .1 of a second,
    select * from transaction1 t where t.hid in (12345);
And this takes .1 of a second.
So why when run seperately are they so fast, yet combined they take so long. I'm a bit baffled by this. We've rewritten the same SQL in half a dozen different ways with the same result and also done the same thing with other tables as well. Is it an optimisation issue?

Appologies for not following protocol, my first time posting on here.
