Are both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks enabled by default?

I have a TC 4th Gen and, according to the box it has both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz networks. Simultaneously.
Questions: Is this so? What makes a device choose 2.4GHz or 5GHz?
Thanks!
Fernando

Is this so?
Yes. Both bands use the same wireless network name.
What makes a device choose 2.4GHz or 5GHz?
Assuming that a wireless device is capable of connecting to a 5 GHz band (an iPhone cannot), it will "look" at both bands and choose the band with the best quality...which is a combination of signal strength and low noise.
5 GHz signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals, so if the computer is a few rooms away from the router, it likely will connect to the 2.4 GHz band because those signals penetrate and travel through obstructions more effectively. 5 GHz signals are absorbed more quickly by any obstructions.
You can "force" a device to only connect to the 5 GHz band by assigning a different name to that band using Wireless Network Options and then "point" the computer at that network. But, that is no guarantee that this will be a better connection. It might be inferior to the 2.4 GHz signal.
For most users, it is probably best to leave the router in its default settings and allow the wireless devices to choose and connect to the band with best quality. After all, isn't that what you want?
Want to know which band your Mac is connected to at any given time?  Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen and look at the Channel info.

  • Trying to connect to BOTH 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands on WRT610N simultaneously!??!?

    Hi everyone,
Alright, so I got this cool router, configured it, with the exception of what the 610N's unique feature of connecting to both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands for a total of 450Mbps??
I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and cannot seem to find as to where to configure it to take advantage of the higher bandwidth!??
Can someone please help regarding this? Am I really going to see a dramatic difference.
Other than that, I love my 610N!
    Thanks very much!

I see...I have the Atheros 11a/b/g/n AR5008X (XSPAN) mini-PCIe wireless adapter installed in my Thinkpad.
What configuratio(s?) do I need to make either on the router, the card, or both??
Are you able to do this, and will it make a noticeable difference?
    Thanks!! Linksys ROCKS!

I am using several Macs running Yosemite. I was recently “upgraded” to Xfinity’s new cable modem which can support both 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz networks at the same time. Actually I can connect to the internet over both with a satisfactory bump in speed for the Ghz. However when I connect to the 5Ghz the Time capsule disappears from the Airport Utility and claims to be Not Found. Is there something I have done wrong or just a Yosemite Teething Problem

First restart your mac and try again.
    It could be
that the router and the TC are interfering wirelessly with each other.
You can check this by pressing the option key while clicking on the wireless icon on your screen
    Open Wireless Diagnostics
    enter your user password
    Press CMD 4 then Scan
You will see all the wireless channels being used in your location and you can check if they are on the same channel
Make the SSID for the TC simple like MyTC
    Set 5Ghz to auto
    Update the TC
    Try again

  • My imac intel display is frozen.  Both the mouse and my network is working.  Has anyone had problems like this and were you successful at fixing it?

My imac (Intel) display is frozen.  Both the mouse and the network are working.  I've shut down various times, pulled the cord from the receptacle on the power strip, and restarted several times.  No luck.  Has anyone had problems like this and were you successful at fixing it?  Thanks.  Would appreciate any help.  Paula

Same problem, but a c.2009 iMac running OS X 10.9.1. Just happened overnight. Presently, I'm able to access my HD via wireless via laptop and copying all non-backed up files to an external drive. So far, Paula is the only other person I've found with this same problem and hers was three years ago! Going to keep searching for an answer.

  • If I set up separate 2.4 and 5GHz networks on my Airport Extreme base station, is it possible to extend just the 5HGz network?

If I set up separate 2.4 and 5GHz networks on my new Airport Extreme base station, is it possible to extend just the 5HGz network with another AirPorrt Extreme that has duel, but not simultanous, frequencies?

Yes, configure the "extending" AirPort Extreme to connect to the 5 GHz network name when you set it up.
Temporarily, locate the extending AirPort Extreme close to the main Extreme for the setup, then move it to the remote location.
But, be advised that it is not easy to extend 5 GHz using wireless. You will almost need to have line-of-sight between the two AirPorts for this to work.

  • My wireless network suddenly not providing IP addresses while my sister networks and 5GHZ networks are.

So I have a network setup on my airport.  I have 2 Android phones, 4 windows-7 systems and 3 Mac systems.  Suddenly yesterday morning internet connections on everything went down.  Luckily my phone told me it couldnt obtain an IP address.  I tried connecting to my guest network and it was fine.  I also tried connecting to my 5GHZ network an it too was fine.  If I try to connect to my main network it doesn't connect.  Do networks go bad or become corrupted?  I assume I need to start a new network but is there something I did wrong?  I do run multiple VPNs not simultaneously at certain points throughout the day.  I only say this because my Airport Extreme goes a little crazy and I have to reset it when I do run a VPN. I also have an Airport Extreme connected within

    Try rebooting your router.

  • Why won't iPad sink to apple tv unless they are both turned off and on?

Why won't iPad sink with apple tv unless they are both reset each time?

    Rudegar,
Our network is very stable and we aren't seeing any problems with anything else and besides, these worked fine until we did the update.
The wifi access point is in the same room about 6-8 ft. away and it's kind of hard to connect an appletv by ethernet to an iPad.
The appletv runs fine using it's built in applications, like Netflix, Disney, Radio, etc.
All of this makes me think it's not a wireless problem, but it's something in the appletv software after doing the update that won't hold the iPad connection.
I appreciate your suggestions and will pass your information along to our network person.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks

  • Set 5ghz network to be default for Macbook Air?

I just got an Airport Extreme and I have given the 5GHZ network a separate ID and set up a MacBook Air to connect to it. However, it keeps defaulting to the other network. Is there a way to change it so it default connect to the 5ghz name?

The Mac is programmed to look for the best combination of signal strength and speed, so there are no hard and fast rules about what it will and will not do.
Apple will not say what exactly the best combination might really mean.
If the signal strength meets a certain threshold (Apple will not say what this is either, or provide any way to adjust it), the Mac will "favor" 5 GHz, even though the 2.4 GHz might be a bit stronger signal at the time.
I just let the Mac connect to what it thinks is the best quality connection and ignore things from there.
Other users spend a lot of time checking to see where the Mac is at any given location. That's fine if you have the time to do this.

  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Sync

Does anybody know if there is an advantage in syncing the two bands

I presume by synching you mean both frequencies using the same SSid.
If you have a wireless device that is capable of dual-band it will automatically select the most suitable frequency. If you are close to your homehub it is likely to automatically select the 5Ghz range as this will give you a faster smoother connection with less interference. The disadvantage of using the 5Ghz is it's not as effective through walls and over distance. So, for example, if you try to connect wirelessly from the garden, the BT Home Hub 4 smart router is likely to automatically switch over to the 2.4Ghz range which covers greater distances.
If you have a separate SSid for the frequencies you effectively have two separate networks so your devices  would not automatically jump to the best frequency.

  • Using an airport extreme in both bridged mode and guest network with DHCP

I currently use a third-generation airport extreme in bridge mode to connect my various Mac servers To the Internet. I'm using bridge mode on the AirPort Extreme because I have up to five static IP address (only using three now) I am currently not using the wireless network, and none of the servers are serving DHCP. I am looking at the Newer airport extreme with guest network Wi-Fi. My question is, does the new airport extreme base station support bridge- mode for any devices and host DHCP for the guest network connecting wirelessly to the base station?

The AirPort Extreme cannot be in Bridge Mode and support a Guest Network.
The AirPort must be configured to provide DHCP and NAT services if you want to enable the Guest Network function.
If you really do have a 3rd Gen AirPort Extreme, it will support the Guest Network feature if you connect the AirPort directly to a simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway type of devices.......and configure the AirPort to provide DHCP and NAT services for the network.

  • E2500 2.4GHz and 5GHz Channels

    Hi guys / gals,
I've recently purchased the E2500, done the setup but am facing some issues.
I'm unable to see the 5GHz channel SSID, I can only see the 2.4GHz channel SSID.
Have tested all the laptops and devices at home and all can't see the 5GHz channel.
    The list of devices are:
    a) iPhone 3GS
    b) iPhone 4G
    c) iPhone 4GS (some sites says it doesn't support, some says it does, I'm confused as a result)
    d) Samsung laptop
    e) Dell laptop
    f) Momo11 Little Bird Edition tablet (Made in China [MIC])
    g) No name MIC tablet
Secondly, is there any tips / tricks to tweak the modem to increase the internet speed?
Appreciate whatever assistance you could provide.
    Thanks in advance.
    Daryll

First, with the above devices you must have a 5Ghz capable wireless adapter in order to see a 5Ghz signal.  Verify which devices above have a 5Ghz adapter installed.  This means it must be 802.11 a/b/g/n cabable, not just b/g/n.

  • TS1398 Problem connecting to both Wi-Fi and Phone networks at same time

I am having a problem on one of our iphones, where it won't connect to both the phone's network (Sprint) and our home Wi-Fi network or any other Wi-Fi network at the same time.  We have another iphone and an ipad that both connect just fine, so it appears to be something specific to this phone.  When connected to Sprint's network so we can use the phone (all the time), it doesn't find any networks.  So, if I reset network settings, etc., I can eventually get it to find our Wi-Fi network and connect, but then it shows No Service to the phone network.  Once you leave the area of the Wi-Fi network and it disconnects from it, the phone service starts to work again.  I've done every network reset there is, removed the SIM Card, etc. but it continues to happen.  Any ideas what might be happening?

If it is your home router that you can't connect to try rebooting it. Unplug it for about 15 seconds.
