Are Brand New iMacs Freezing?

I'm soon going to be buying a new 24" 2.8GHz iMac, and am wondering if anyone who's purchased from Apple online in the last couple of weeks has experienced the freezing issues others in this forum are reporting?

Pop,
I just did a quick scan of Apple's 14 day return policy, and gotta wonder about a couple of the restrictions in it:
1. If we purchase, say, a 24" 2.8GHz iMac with a 750GB disk drive, this would seem to me to be a "made to order" computer and would not be eligible for the 14 day return. Because it's a made to order item, AppleCare would kick in.
2. I chuckled a bit when I read that Apple would exchange an unopened computer. After scratching my head, I cannot come up with a scenario whereby someone would exchange an unopened computer!
Below is the Apple return policy copied from their web site:
Return and Refund Policy
If you are not satisfied with your Apple purchase of a product, please call 1-800-676-2775 for a Return Material Authorization (RMA) request within 14 calendar days of the receipt of the product. Configure-to-order, personalized or other customized products may not be returned for refund or exchange under any circumstances unless such product is Dead on Arrival (see the section below for more detailed information on such Dead on Arrival products). If the item is returnable and you send it back to us unopened in the original box, Apple will exchange it or offer you a refund based on your original method of payment. You must return the product to the Apple warehouse within 14 calendar days of the issuance of the RMA. All products must be packed in the original, unmarked packaging including any accessories, manuals, documentation and registration that shipped with the product. Apple will assess a 10% restocking fee on any opened hardware or accessory. If you purchased your order using an Apple Business Lease, Apple may ask you to provide a major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover) so Apple can assess the 10% restocking fee.
Please note that Apple does not permit the return of or offer refunds for the following products:
Product that is custom configured to your specifications, including personalized products

  • Brand new iMac freezes constantly! Updates aren't helping!

    Hello everyone,
This past Sunday I bought a brand new iMac intel Core 2 Duo with a 250 GB HDD and 1 GB of RAM. At home I set it up with my SAMSUNG 1080p 22" monitor, Apple bluetooth Keyboard and mightymouse, and a Western Digital 350 GB HDD hooked up via USB. I was excited to finally jump on the intel-based Mac bandwagon, as well as experience dual monitors for the first time.
That was Sunday. Tuesday evening I was watching "Rome" on itunes on my Samsung monitor while surfing the web with Omniweb on the iMac monitor. All of sudden, everything locked up. I was able to move my cursor, but nothing responeded to my clicking. I hard booted the system and loaded everything I had going again, and sure enough, it locked up a few moments later. I ran system update, updated everything, then restarted. Time went by and although not immediatly, later that night it froze up on me again.
Fast forward to last nite, and the freezing reached and all time high. 5 times. Each time was when I had a browser open in my iMac window and I had Quicktime playing in my Samsung monitor. I was watching a sports program, with the player fit to the screen.
I have read many posts about intel iMacs freezing late last year, but there was a firmware update that evidently fixed that. I have this update installed, and I have had no luck. I have even contacted Apple Care via phone where I got instructed to unplug everything, plug it back in, start in safe mode, and delete cache. That didn't help me out at all. Am I right insuspecting I have a faulty Video card? I just ordered 4GB of RAM, could this be a RAM issue?

When diagnostics are run on a freezing computer and nothing shows, I'll put the program into a testing loop because this means one of two things: the issue is heat related so running the diagnostics several more times will bring on the heat so that the issue shows up or the installed RAM is marginal, just flaky enough to show up now and again but not so far off that a run through of the memory test catches it on the first run.
As I said in my original post, memory is always a suspect in a freezing or kernel panicking computer. And it does tend to top my list. But from what you describe I'm not quite willing to say, "Why don't you just wait until the RAM upgrade arrives?"

  • Brand New iMac freezes when external display connected

I'm having an issue where when I plug my Apple VGA adapter to my brand new iMac, it completely freezes. As soon as I unplug the adapter, it unfreezes. Also, if I plug in the adapter without the vga adapter, it does not freeze until I plug a vga cable into the adapter. Can anyone help me with this one?

Turns out that the solution is patience. After allowing the iMac to sit frozen for some time, it eventually starts working.

  • LR 5 Crop tool is constantly freezing on a fresh new install of LR 5.4 on a brand new iMac Retina??? What is going on ???

I have lightroom 5.6 installed on a brand new iMac Retina
    Running OS X Yosmite
    Processor 3.5Ghz i5 Quad Core
    32 Gb Ram
    AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB
    1 TB Fusion Drive
    Application Stored on Fusion Drive
LR Files/Configs etc stored on Fusion Drive
    Files are Canon 5D3 Raws
Files stored on external TB2 RAID Drives.
    Camera Raw Cache 100 GB
Tried to Purge Cache & Optimised Catalog
Catalog was moved from older iMac to the iMac Retina
I am frustrated and at a loss to understand WHY my Crop Tool constantly causes my LR to freeze? I get the spinning beach ball and it is very slow. Does any one have any idea????
As a wedding photographer, this is slowing down my work flow significantly and its making my work life miserable!

If there are a lot of errors, perhaps the hard drive is physically failing. Perhaps it might be better to simply add a drive to the second slot and install the system on that.

  • How do I uninstall Mavericks and recover Lion?  I have a brand new iMac and web pages stall or freeze since I installed Mavericks.  I can't get it to download software for my printer when I connect it.

I have a brand new iMac.  It was working fine until I downloaded Mavericks.  Now I have web pages that freeze while trying to load.  The blue in the address bar stalls and freezes.  If I try to load from page 1 to a later page, or reverse that, I also have the same problem.  I tried to connect my printer for the first time, and again, the blue progress bar froze.  Then I got the yellow  triangle telling me there was a connection problem.  My internet connection is via an Air Card as that is my only option where I live.  I packed up the whole new iMac and took it to my Air Card provider, where they also have very fast Wifi, and they had the same problem with Wifi.  I use my Air Card with my MacBook and it works JUST GREAT!  I really want to return to Lion.  HELP.

The only way to retutn to Lion is to format your drive (erase, lose all) and either:
    1. clone back the clone copy i hoep you have, or
    2. first backup your files, then format and install Lion again
But really, mavericks works great. You have a problem. Find out why. First, what unusual software do oyu have installed that may be conflicting with it? Virus, system modifiers, etc?  Second what OLD software do you have that might be the problem.  finally, you might need to do a re-install if something errored during install.

My dad has a brand new iMac. If he quits an app, this window closes, but the app won't finish shutting down, Force quitting does not work.  Once another app is opened, it will not close either.  Now none of the apps on the dock are responding. I asked him to click on the apple, and drop down to "About this Mac", but that wouldn't open either. Any ideas?  If I was at his house, I would call Apple Care in a heartbeat, but am home with my sick daughter,,,  Thanks!

For starters, have him open Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, select the volume (the indented listing) and Verify Disk. If it reports any problems, have him try a Safe Boot by holding the Shift key at startup. This boot will take much longer than usual. It's checking and trying to repair the drive directory, if possible. Once in Safe Boot, have him repair Permissions.
For other Disk repair remedies see
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Also, have him try a PRAM Reset. At the startup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, listen for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.
Also, is he running any AV? If so, have him uninstall it. It might be responsible for this behavior. (There are no viruses for OS X.)

  • Brand new iMac 21", freeze. Mouse movies, but does nothing

We just opened a brand new iMac 21" literally yesterday (purchased within the last three weeks). It was on for about an hour with no problems whatsoever. Then, while transferring photos to iPhoto, the system interface randomly froze. You can move the mouse around the screen, but it does nothing. You can't click anything. Hard resets/shutdowns result in the system rebooting back to the desktop like normal, but the mouse stays in this semi-frozen state. You can movie the pointer, but you can't actually interact with anything to fix the problem. Nothing brings it out of this state. We're not terribly experienced with Macs (new owner) and also snowed in to boot.
Has anybody encountered problems like this before? How do I fix this freeze?

My suggestion with a new Mac that is having those problems is to take it back to the Apple Store and ask them to fix it. Beside allowing them to solve the problem that will also give them the chance to document the problem with your Mac just in case it should happen again.

I have the old machine backed up onto an external firewire disk but can't hook that up to the new imac as I'm waiting for delivery of a firewire 400/800 adaptor - therefore starting the old machine up as a slave is also subject to the same delay.
I was hoping there might be some way to create a network between the 2 machines (and 2 different versions of the OS) to be able to transfer data across immediately but perhaps I'll just have to wait for my firewire adaptor to arrive.
I don't understand why you're buying a Firewire adaptor, since AFAIK both of your computers have Firewire already built in.
All you need is a firewire cable. Connect the Firewire socket on the old machine to the Firewire socket on your new iMac.
Then start the old machine in Target Mode (i.e. by holding down the T key on its keyboard, while it's starting up, until you see the three-legged T icon hopping around the screen of the old machine.)
At that point you will also see a new icon on the screen of your new iMac. This is the hard drive of your old machine.  By clicking on it you can navigate through it any way you like, just as you would normally.
Just drag across whatever you want from the old computer to the new one. This will leave everything on the old computer untouched.
    - or use Migration Assistant but in my experience, Migration Assistant isn't very reliable and fails to migrate large amounts of stuff.

  • A dvd will not eject from my brand new IMac. I have done every suggestion in the help area. Any suggestions on how to get this DVD out of the computer?

My brand new IMac will not eject a DVD. I have tried everything that was suggested in "help". It didn't recognize the dvd, and whenever I try to eject it, it is not highlighted. I have tried to restart while holding the track pad, and nothing happened at all. The dvd is from the library...so it needs to be returned! Any other suggestions?

Have you tried all of these?
    1. Pressing the Eject key while opening the iMac.
    2. Pressing the Eject key while closing down the iMac.
    3. Holding down the Option key while restarting the iMac.
    4. Using Disk Utility to try to Mount, Repair and Eject the disk.
    5. Holding down the Mouse while restarting the iMac.
    6. Pressing the O and F keys while closing down the iMac.
    7. Opened Applications > Utilities >Terminal and typed in 'drutil tray eject'.

  • Can I use Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended on my brand new iMac? I had PS on my old Mac using the student licensing.

About four years ago, I purchased Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended while I was in undergrad. I downloaded it to my Mac. Since then, I've purchased a brand new iMac. Can I use this same software? I know it's been four years so the software is very updated, AND my new iMac does NOT have a cd drive. This may all be in vain. I'm just clueless! Thanks!

Emalexander89 you are welcome to install Photoshop CS4 on your new Mac.  You can download a fresh copy of the installation files at Download CS6 products.

  • Slow performance, brand new iMac!

    Hello!
First, excuse my rusty English.. I hope you manage to read it
Main problem.. Adobe, PhaseOne and other intensive applications is veeeery slow on a high specced brand new iMac! Lightroom 5, PS CC and Capture One Pro 7 is what I use mostly.
I just got my brand new iMac 2014.2 (3.5/3.9 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 512GB flash disk and GTX780M), and its quite a lot slower than my other Win7 workstation. Other workstation specs: i7 4.2 GHz, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD, GTX 580. I'm working on the same Raid-5 drive (USB-3) too, so I don't know why it's slower..
    What I experience:
Changing from "current" raw to next raw (while culling) takes several seconds, and my Raid-5 is done chewing long before I see the result on my monitor. I get the spinning beach ball while waiting for preview. I always render 1:1 on import and 1:1+standard size in menu, just to be sure. Adjustment brush is like dodging in PS v1.0 (NOT CS) when computers had less disk-space than we have cpu-cache today, awfully slow, and it "stutters". Moving/panning in 1:1 is very choppy, and sometimes I get the spinning beach ball while panning.. This happens in LR and CO.. Photoshop CC stutters or have to "think" when I try panning. These problems happens in 6 Mpix, 12 Mpix or 25 Mpix RAW files, and actually in some JPEGs too!
    I have done following:
I've tried 2003 and 2010 processing in LR, small change. Fixed permissions in OS X. Removed preferences for LR, CO and PS CC. Reinstalled LR/cloud apps and Capture One Pro 7. Increased camera raw cache from 15 to 50 GB. Followed Adobe's guide to make LR faster. Followed Capture One guides. Reinstalled (clean install) of OS X. I've tried all tips I could find in the forums around.. I have also tried placing RAW files on internal 512 GB disk to see if that helps on performance, but no change. Same story with camera raw cache, doesn't matter where it is.
Additional things.. I’ve also diagnosed the iMac with checkdisk, memcheck, logs, etc.. No problems as far as I can see.
I just changed my workflow from Win to OS X and I depend on this to work.. I currently have 4000 files from my last job waiting to be worked on, and I'm not finished until Christmas in this tempo :-(
If I can't get this working very soon, then I have to return this very expensive iMac and buy a new PC again..

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

  • I have a brand new iMac that does not have iDVD. Made a move on iMovie installed a 3rd party burn prog. but DVD won't playback on my regular dvd player. Need to burn one that will. Help!

My new iMac did not come with iDVD as they are not using iDVD any longer.  I made a movie that I needed to put on a DVD that would play on any external DVD player. After calling Apple twice, they recommened a 3rd party program so I downloaded "Burn-osx" and made the DVD; however when i insert it into my player connected to the TV it gives the message "disk error --playback feature may not be available on this disk".  Ok--now what?  I am up against a time line here--need the DVD for a graduation party! Help! What am I not doing correctly?

I have a brand new iMac
If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.
    408-996-1010
    800-692-7753
If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie. Get iDVD.

  • Brand New iMac unable to read data DVD or eject it.

    Hello all,
I'm no good with technology so please bear with me.
I just purchased a brand new iMac a couple of weeks ago, and I'm attempting to run a Data DVD that I got for an online university class.
When put in to the disc drive, one of two things happens:
    1) It fails to recognize that there is a DVD in it.
    2) It eventually recognizes it (about 5 mins), but then shows nothing on the disc.
after that it is nearly impossible to eject the disc without rebooting the computer or pushing eject a million times and waiting 10 minutes.
Assuming the disc is good (the rest of them are, but I'm getting a replacement just in case), what else can I do?
    Thanks.

If it just does it with the one disc the disc is likely bad. Get a replacement disc.
If it does it with multiple discs the drive may be faulty. With a new Mac I'd take it back to the store.

  • Brand new iMac won't boot :-(

    Hi All,
I just got a brand new iMac. I did a clean install of Leopard, imported a couple of CDs into iTunes, and then thought I'd give Bootcamp a go.
I created the disk and the machine duly rebooted into Windows setup. As the installer couldn't see the Bootcamp partition (I was using XP without SP2). I told the installer to quit and reboot.
Now all I get is a hanging white screen when I power up my iMac. If i hold down the Alt key I get a mouse pointer which locks up after a couple of seconds and that's it.
    I've tried:
    - Holding down alt on bootup - this brings up a pointer which locks after about 2 seconds
    - Holding down alt+C - with Leopard in the drive - nothing happens
    - Zapping the PVRAM - AltCMD+PR" - this had no effect
    - Resetting the SMU - hold down power whilst plugging in - now all the fans are running at maximum speed
    - An open firmware update as per this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5984118
    Is the machine completely toast?

The same thing happened to me this last week. After talking to Apple on the phone for hours they decided that it was dead and declared it doa (even though it was working for a few hours before boot camp). I am getting my new one this week. I can promise you that boot camp will not be put used on this one.

  • Brand new imac - streaming audio/video skips

    Hey all,
I just purchased a brand new imac with snow leopard 10.6.1 on it. When I use any sort of streaming media (pandora, hulu, youtube, etc.) it intermittently slows wayyyy down and skips. I have no problems with this on my other computers (2nd gen macbook, lenovo thinkpad.) This problem occurs in both Safari and Firefox. I have tried changing the frequency channel on my router, to no avail. As a whole, the browsers are slower than I would expect them to be.
Any ideas? This is really aggravating, especially since it's so new.

10.6.2 just dropped less than an hour ago, and includes a fix for this....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874
+this update addresses video playback and performance issues for iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) and iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) computers that may occur in some situations while AirPort is turned on+
