Are case screws supposed to fall out?

my macbook is just over a year old, i purchased it a few weeks before the graphics chip set refresh in oct 07, it's a black macbook.
in the past few weeks, the two screws near the rear of the case on the bottom, on each side of the designed by apple and FCC text, have just fell out. i find this rather perplexing and annoying considering this equipment cost sixteen hundred dollars and this problem convieniently arose almost immediately upon my one year warantee expiring...
my question is will getting the screws replaced do anything?
should i take it into apple even though my warranty is up?
what is the purpose of these two screws anyway? obviously i am stil using my macbook it is still working, so they cant be that important can they?
please help!

From what I've read about taking the MB apart, the screws are different lengths. So, IF you could get screws from somewhere else, you would have to know the length as well as the size.
Even if your MB is out of warranty, I would think Apple would replace the screws for no cost IF you took it into a Apple store. If that is a problem because of distance, they might send you the correct screws if you call Apple Tech Support. Certainly worth a try.
As to why your missing screws "backed" out on their own, that's the big question. Hard to believe they were not screwed down tight when you picked up the computer.
Good Luck

  • Satellite Portege R705 Screws falling out from inside computer

    I've had two screws fall out of the INTERIOR of my Satellite Protege R705.  The first one hit my right hand as I picked up the laptop off my lap.  The second one fell off today when I picked the laptop up by the top of the screen (while it was open).  I did not see this one fall but heard it hit the floor & it was exactly the same type of screw as the first one.  Again, there are not screws missing from the exterior of my computer, or the opened DVD player.
    Has anyone else had this happen and what do I do?  My computer is physically functioning OK other than it keeps saying one of my USB ports is not working even though both USB ports do work so I've ignored that warning.

    Kathy,
    A couple things.  First, this post is a bit dated, so probably better for you to start your own thread instead of posting to an old one.
    Also, when posting, please provide the entire model number (which the OP did not).  It is provided on the bottom of the computer and looks something like Portege R705-P40.
    Check the bottom of the computer and look in each one of the holes to see if you can find which one is missing a screw.  If you find it, just replace the screw using a jeweler's screwdriver.  If not, it likely is not going to be an issue as the case is held together with many screws.
    Finally, as has been posted already, never pick up your computer from the screen, as you could break one of the hinges, and they are difficult to repair.
    If your computer is working then don't wory about it losing a screw.

  • Has anyone else had the screws fall out of the bottom of 2012 2013 Macbook Pro Retina?

    Apple tried to repair my Macbook Pro Retina when I first got it. They took the back off, replaced the motherboard (which was not the problem), and returned it to me the next day (via FedEx). When I got the machine back, half of the screws on the back shell were falling out... and one was in crooked. Apple told me to take my machine to the authorized computer repair place to have the screws tightened. The screws were tightened and now, they are falling out again! I've read about needed some sort of locktight product to put the screws back in. I don't understand why an authorized repair place would not do this the first time! Can you tell me what the process should be on replacing the screws in the bottom (shell) of the Macbook Pro Retina? I've heard that the shell should be replaced when the new screws are put in. Is this true? (I have AppleCare and will take my machine in next week for repair.... again!) Thanks!

    The first repair (when they thought logic board was bad) was a mail-in to Apple. They are the ones that did not re-apply the screws properly and they were falling out when I took computer out of the cardboard shipping box. Called Apple. They said take it to Computer Guys (only auth Apple repair here). Now, a new Mac store in the mall has opened. I think I will take it there this time since it was not done properly at the Computer Guys last time (however, Apple didn't put them back in properly in the FIRST place! Gee. I have Applecare and will stay with Apple repair only. Thanks! I appreciate everyone's input. It has been really helpful! The only reason I have not taken it to an Apple Store is because it is 3 hours away. I will see what this new Mac store has to offer. Oh... and, Apple Support did absolutely nothing for me! Did not even apologize for not fixing it properly the first time... and costing me time and money (as my computer is part of my job). Thanks again! Did Apple do this on purpose to keep us from repairing our own machines? I've seen so many complaints online and I imagine there will be more to come as the machines age and people try to make repairs themselves. Crazy.

    If I buy a lifeproof nuud case for my iphone 5 can I also buy a screen protector such as an amzer and use it aswell I have had a lot of screens break from little falls out of my pocket

    The Lifeproof case will provide reasonable protection from accidents and liquid intrusion. Screen protectors themselves provide essentially no protection, other than from minor scratches.
    You can use the ones Lifeproof included, or less expensive ones. The cheapest ones you can find on the market are adequate. More expensive ones don't do anything better. Some can damage the glass, which won't be covered under AppleCare.
    It's practically impossible to apply any of them without trapping a piece of dust.
    None are really required.

  • Yoga disintegrates when case screws loosen: an analysis and how to get help?

    My Yoga 13 physically fell apart after just 18 months of quiet, academic use. I'm trying to have it repaired with the extended credit card company policy -- but I'm afraid Lenovo will block my attempt based on what appears to be a not uncommon response to these complaints: the warranty does not cover abuse. A warranty claim must imply a measure of culpability on the manufacturer.
    So, I will try to document here why the Lenovo Yoga hinge design is a case of corporate hubris that have allowed some basic engineering principles to be violated. These are strong words but I believe I can back them up.
    I'll hope that this will get the attention of others who have run into this problem so that, hopefully, Lenovo will coorporate in its resolution. Customers tend to become irate when their product literally falls apart after just a year or two of gentle use -- to be told its their own fault.
    As for my factual findings, the hubris is easy to document. For the growing "legend of our IdeaPad Yoga" and its "boundary-busting PC" design see The 360 Degrees (and 25,000 Hinge Tests) of Yoga Design, where the hinge is presented more or less as a miracle.
    Nemesis is of course what happens in real life:
    Link to image
    (The laptop looks beaten up here because I tried to apply epoxy glue after disintegration. Only with this experiment did I realize how inherently faulty the design is.)
    What you see here is a catastrophic failure of the whole sandwich of mechanical support: the brittle magnalium (the grey layer at the bottom) and the black plastic framing are by design receiving the torque of lid manuevers along the line of the fracture. The zinc alloy that's part of the hinge embedded in the frame is strong, but it is bizarrely only about 8mm long (measured along side of laptop). I would have expected it to be about 30-40 mms long, sticking well into the base along the area of the rubber pad. That's the first of a series of problems:
    Problem #1. The zinc alloy plate is underdimensioned.
    Problem #2. The integrity of the design relies on a screw of miniscule size (shown next to pencil). If this screw is the slightest loose, then the sandwich looses all of its stiffness. A catastrophic break will occur because of #1.
    Problem #3. There is no duplication of this critical component (this tiny screw). Your $1000 depends on it being there and very tightly in place.
    Problem #4. But the screw is not safely secured. It is held in place with a locking compound (seen as blue on the picture). Obviously, this locking compound fails with heat and mechanical stresses. There is no lock washer.
    Problem #5. Lenovo has not acknowledged these flaws. Customer laptops will continue to suffer from loosening screws and then hinge or case failure that then will be attributed to "customer abuse".
    I'd also be curious to know whether newer Yoga versions are made as prone to break?
    I like the concept of the Yoga but I feel I blew a $1000 on it. (The wifi and trackpad problems are minor in comparision to the mechanical design, which can best be characterized by the name of yellow fruit, at least for this Yoga 13.)
    For others whose Yoga hasn't broken yet, you might want to buy a bit set with the Torx T-5 that allows to tighten your hinge screws (other case screws loosen, too).
    If your hinge becomes the slightest loose, you must check your screw!!!!!!
    But that by itself is a temporary solution: the screws need to be fixated.
    I don't know how to do that. Perhaps Lenovo should do a recall on the whole series? Otherwise, customers will get quite unhinged as well....
    Moderator note: large image(s) converted to link(s):  About Posting Pictures In The Forums

    Follow-up: as others have experienced, Lenovo does apparently not accept loose or missing screws or consequental dammage as a valid warranty claim.
    Indeed, I received the message from Lenovo: "After further diagnosis, our repair engineers found damages on your computer that is not covered by the Lenovo limited warranty."
    Yet, I had very clearly explained that the mechanical damage was the result of a missing screw.
    Thus my extended warranty claim was easily denied, because this warranty extends the original warranty!! More wasted work.
    So, I have my Yoga back, though, for almost three hundred dollars. The repair was fine. Nightmare is over. But I won't hide my feelings: I'm profoundly unhappy this treatment. Also, I'm abstaining from using the Yoga in tablet mode: it's simply not sturdy enough, the flexing of the case will lead to the same problem again.
    Luckily, as a laptop it works quite well!

  • Good headphones for vigorous workouts, that won't fall out?

    I've found the earbuds the Shuffle came with to be a little small as it is, and while at the gym on an elliptical or whatnot, they tend to need to be frequently pressed back in or they fall out.
    Any recommendation on something that might fit better/be less prone to falling out? Looking at the ratings on headphones in the Apple store, all of them seem to vary widely from "they're great" to "they break five minutes after you put them on."
    I suggested to Consumer Reports that they rate headphones, and got a thank you from them for the suggestion, but supposing they do an article on it, it wouldn't be for some time. Perhaps there are other magazines that have done ratings?
    Thanks,

    The in-ear type fits more snugly and so doesn't fall out as easily. Due to the snug fit, it blocks outside sound better and sounds MUCH better than the terrible headphones the iPod comes with.
    These are the ones I use. Apple sells some too.
    However, they might still fall out with vigorous exercise. They work pretty well on my walks though.

  • Closing items as they fall out of a soft cache

    I have the following simple cache interface and implementation:
    public interface Cache<K, V> {
        V get(K key);
        V remove(K key);
        void put(K key, V value);
    public class SoftCache<K, V> implements Cache<K, V> {
        private Map<K, Reference<V>> storage = new HashMap<K, Reference<V>>(50);
        public V get(K key) {
            return deref(storage.get(key));
        public V remove(K key) {
            return deref(storage.remove(key));
        private V deref(Reference<V> ref) {
            return ref == null ? null : ref.get();
        public void put(K key, V value) {
            storage.put(key, createReference(value));
        protected Reference<V> createReference(V value) {
            return new SoftReference<V>(value);
    }This much appears to work fine, but now I want to automatically call close() on all V values if they fall out of the cache.
    I have tried using a ReferenceQueue and having another thread polling the reference queue, my problem is that when I call get() the referenced value is always null, and I can't figure out how to get a reference to it at this point.
    Is there some way of getting a reference to the item before the GC clears the Reference, and thus give me a chance to call close() on the item before it is GCed?
    I'm not fond of solving this by overriding finalize() on the V values themselves, as people often say not to rely on finalize() as the sole means for cleaning up, and I want to add a close() method to the cache such that after I call close(), I know that all values have been closed. If I simply add finalize() to V then it doesn't give me that, as it could be closed at any point after the reference becomes unreachable.

    I think you're onto something with the container approach, but there is one thing preventing me from being happy with this solution as-is. Basically, callers need to know to hold onto the container. On the surface it would appear to be possible to do this:
    myValue = cache.get(myKey).get();But in reality this would then mean nobody is referencing the container with a hard reference, and the JRE would occasionally collect it, causing it to clean up the contained value.Sorry, I don't get you here. What is the expression cache.get(myKey).get() supposed to do?
    But... what if I had a way to hold onto a reference to a cleanup object from my items which are in the cache? I don't know if I can do this in a generic way, but if I did something like this...I'm not sure, but maybe here you're talking about the very same technique that I was trying to explain: putting a resource-object into the actual objects handed out to the clients of the cache. I was suggesting a fully generic approach where you could specify the type of the client-side object as well as the type of the resource-object. One yould simplify this a bit by creating an interface Cacheable:
    import java.io.Closeable;
    interface Cacheable
         public Closeable getResource();
    interface Cache<K, V extends Cacheable> {
        V get(K key);
        V remove(K key);
        void put(K key, V value);
    class SoftCache<K, V extends Cacheable> implements Cache<K, V> {
        private Map<K, Reference<V>> storage = new HashMap<K, Reference<V>>(50);
        public V get(K key) {
            return deref(storage.get(key));
        public V remove(K key) {
             doCleanup();
            return deref(storage.remove(key));
        private V deref(Reference<V> ref) {
            return ref == null ? null : ref.get();
        public void put(K key, V value) {
             doCleanup();
            storage.put(key, createReference(value));
         private void doCleanup() {
              Reference<? extends V> ref;
             while(null != (ref = queue.poll())) {
                  CacheReference cacheRef = (CacheReference) ref;
                  if(cacheRef.handle != null)
                        try {
                             cacheRef.handle.close();
                        } catch (IOException e) {
                             e.printStackTrace();
        protected Reference<V> createReference(V value) {
            return new CacheReference(value, queue);
        class CacheReference extends SoftReference<V> {
              CacheReference(V referent, ReferenceQueue<? super V> q) {
                   super(referent, q);
                   this.handle = referent.getResource();
              final Closeable handle;
        private final ReferenceQueue<V> queue = new ReferenceQueue<V>();
      }

    I too have the same problem.  The audio drop out of sync in about 5 sec in not uncommon for the audio to be 30+ sec behind video.  Apple needs to fix this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   its a joke,  my iphone is all messed up after the last update as well.  at one time not to long ago apple products and software were top rated, not so much any more, more and more problems are showing up and apple is unwilling or unalbe to fix the many issues.  Apple needs to fix the audio sync problem, it not the computer hardware or other software it ITUNES!!!!,  there is no workaround other then hitting pause and hitting pause and hitting pause to temp fix the problem.

  • Final cut pro - editing music video audio falls out of sync

    filmed with canon 7D- i play the music in the background for th artist to perform. upon loading up the footage into final cut, i sync the start of the video audio with the record, as they both play it falls out of sync. i did not have this problem when i edited with premiere. any ideas

    Sync issues are *usually* going to be mismatched sample rates, for instance, you imported 44.1kHz audio into a 48kHz project.
    This happened to me awhile back, and unfortunately, I don't remember exactly what I did to fix it. But what I *think* I did was click on the imported audio and went to the Retime menu and selected Conform Speed. If that doesn't work, right click on the audio in the event browser and select Transcode (if there's an option to do so in the dialog).
    It is also possible to manually resync audio by Retiming it. Turn on snapping (N), select the clip, type Command-R and drag the audio clip's retiming handle until the end of the audio snaps with the end of the video clip (this is actually amazingly accurate.) [If your recorded audio is not the same length of the audio on the video, then set markers on the video and audio tracks and retime until the markers snap.] You should do this before any other edits.

  • Internet Explorer Falls out whenever I hit a Java Page

    Hi,
    I just installed my Windows 2000 Advanced Server OS and I'm running IE Version 6.0 Update Version SP1. I've also got .NET framework installed
    So then I installed Java from Sun website since Microsoft says it doesn't support Java within IE anymore.
    Now If I'm browsing web and hit a page with Java my browser falls out immediately. Also if I goto Tools > Sun Java Console the browser also falls out immediately.
    Any ideas how I can fix this?

    Thanks - but Firefox is not supported by my employer and we are restricted to use of Internet Explorer.  I appreciate you taking the time to try and help though   Anyone else have any thoughts?  This is so frustrating not to be able to open pdfs online.

  • Has anyone come up with a way to stop Earpods falling out?

    Apparently (according to the Ad) these Earpods are actually designed for all ears. Though they sound pretty good, actually comparable to my old Bose IE2 headphones, sadly, they just fall out. One ear is worse than the other but essentially unusable. There must be a way to put them in a silicon cover thing like the Bose. Just hope Apple do as I have read quite a few posts already, to be fair, trade descriptions are being contravened. I’d understand if I had mutated ‘lugholes’ but they really aren’t

    I have worked out way of modifying the earpods so they don't fall out. I cut 4-5mm off the big ends of some ear plugs, punched holes in them with a ring-binder paper punch then glued them to the tips of the earpods with loctite 406 (a superglue type of adhesive that works with some plastics). Only use a small amount of the glue though or the ear plugs will soak it up and get too hard to be comfortable. When the glue has set, compress the earplug material as much as possible, then push the earpod ito your ear and hold it in place for 30 seconds or so to let the foam expand, then the earpod won't keep falling out.

  • Converting to m4v falls out of sync?

    I am trying to convert a bunch of .avi files to .m4v so that I can watch them on apple tv. For all of the clips i have that are under 30 minutes, everything is fine. But, for the movies I have that last for longer than a half hour, the audio falls out of sync. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I am using quicktime pro's export to apple TV option.

    I just came across this link which describes the exact same issues I've been having.
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/streaming-server-users/2006/Jan/msg00184.html
    In the post, he mentions:
    +"Stripping the hint tracks that Compressor makes in QT Player Pro, and re-exporting Movie to Hinted Movie (using QuickTime packetizer instead of Native) fixes it. "+
    My system is busy with another task at the moment, but I will have to give this a try. I wonder if compressing a video as a download version and then exporting for hinted will work just as well as deleting the hinted tracks....
