Are 'cheap' replacements any good?

Hello all,
I've seen a few cheapish relacement batteries on ebay (around £45) although the Newertech ones mentioned in these discussions retail for about £100 - I'd like to hear from anyone who has tried a cheap battery to know if it is any good, or is it a case of you get what you pay for?

The standard Tibook battery is rated at 4400 mAh, not 4000, and the NewerTech batteries are rated at 4800. So a battery that starts off at 3700 is only at 84% of standard capacity and 77% of NuPower capacity. A standard battery that's been used enough so it only offers half the original 4400 is often barely usable, and may not produce accurate charge readouts or the normal pre-sleep warning that you're running on reserve power. So the useful lifetime of a standard battery extends, in practice, from when it's new until it's down to about half its original capacity. I don't know anything about the cheap batteries being offered on Ebay, and maybe at less than half the price of a NuPower, they're worth buying. But I think normnod is wise to rely on his only as a backup, not as his only battery.

  • Are these specs any good for Premiere CS4?

I have just bought Cs4 and it doesn't run very well on my computer that ran CS3 perfectly!
    Is this normal?
So, I looked into upgrading my computer to these specs- can you give helpful suggestions please!
PS I would like to run CS4 and Magic Bullet Looks
    MSI Neo P45 motherboard RAID
    Intel Core2Duo E8500 3.16 GHz CPU
    4 GB DDR2 800 Mhz RAM
2x 1 TB Samsung 32 Mb cache Sata2 Raid stripe.
    LG GGW-H20L Blu-Ray writer
    Gigabyte GV-N95TOC Geforce 9500GT 1Gb Graphics
Using your existing case, power supply and 32bit Vista. thanks scott!!!

Your specs do look good enough, at least for DV. Working with DV footage should allow you to have smooth video.
But people like me doing HDV work are having a lot of stutter/freeze problems. The Program window is giving this trouble on playback. You may see your Source window as able to play smoothly, but that is raw video and tech support confirms it processes video differently than for the Program window.
CS4 lacks a switch that CS3 had to select whether to use GPU acceleration. According to phone tech support, that is trouble for a lot of people.
Further, CS4 while trying to "automatically" decide if and how to use the GPU (graphics card processor), will not accept OpenGL 3.0. Ironically, the advice to me was to roll back to old drivers, that were 2.0 (or 2.1) compliant, as that would supposedly throw the "invisible switches" correctly inside PPro CS4.
However, rolling back did not help me. I also have RAID 0, but I have a single core 3.8 GHz processor, so my problems are acute, and CS4 is unusable for me.
Even people with Quad cores are having playback stutter problems (I think usually mostly with HDV).
That's incredible!! What was Adobe thinking when they released this software with such a performance slowdown compared to CS3?

  • Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap). Any ideas?

Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap and doesn't provide any kind of professional DVD authoring). Any ideas?

This comes up a lot these days.
Practically speaking, there are really four options for the Mac platform: Toast (<$100),  Adobe Premier Productiom ($1,600 to buy or $50/month to rent),  find a copy of Final Cut Studio from 3rd  party (+/- $1,000 new) or a boxed edition of iLife to get iDVD ($50 - $90 on Amazon new).
The other question everyone has is how many OS versions before iDVD or FCS breaks? No one knows, but Apple has said they're no longer supporting these legacy apps. Of course, no one is mandated to upgrade to a new OS unless they buy a new computer. So if it works on a system, stay with it as long as it makes sense.
    Good luck.

  • Hi,  We are developing quite a few excel worksheet reports. The reports dont show the cells if contain formulas ( when opened in iPad or ipod  ),  is there any good solutions .

    Hi,
We are developing quite a few excel worksheet reports.
The reports dont show the cells if contain formulas ( when opened in iPad or ipod  ),
Is there any good solutions .
    Thanks.

There is no version of Excel for iPads.  iPads come with something that lets you view the contents of Excel files but it implements only the common easy features and there are (literally) hundreds of things you can do in Excel that it doesn't know how to show on the screen, including some functions.
If you intend to work with spreadsheets on an iPad I suggest you buy Numbers for iPad
    http://www.apple.com/apps/iwork/numbers/
which understands more (but still not 100%) of the things that Excel does.  It is so cheap that you can probably afford to buy a copy just to see whether it does what you want.
If you are doing things with spreadsheets and intend to be primarily working on iPads then I suggest you actually use Numbers on a Mac as well, rather than using Excel at all.

  • Are these any good TP-Link TL-WR1043ND

    Hi,
Just looking to replace the HH3 as I find my speed slows right down until rebooted. Once I have done this it works great for a few days and then slows right down again. I am only rebooting the HH3 and the modem stays on so makes me think it is the unit. Just wondering what experiences other people have out there and wheather the above box would be any good to replace the HH3 with.
    Thanks for any help.

Sorry - You must be connected to BT Broadband or the BT network to use this website
My website is running on a private server and is restricted to BT Broadband and those connected to the BT network, as its intended as a help site for forum members.
If you access via BT Wifi, you should be able to view it as well, although sometimes my reverse DNS lookup fails on some of these subnets, but I am keeping a watch to see which ones are failing.
Unfortunately, opening up the website to the whole world, results in an exponential increase in bandwidth due to linking by search engines, attacks by hackers and other issues as well.
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.

  • Are imacs any good?

i am thinking of getting the 27" i7 imac but wondering what the quality is like as i have read reports that they overheat and cause hardware problems?
i am wanting a computer that is fast, reliable and just works.
i would like an all in one computer to make my desk tidier and less cable mess.
    how long do imacs last?

    how long do imacs last?
As long as you want them to last. I have owned Macs since 1985 and they all became functionally obsolete before any hardware failure occurred. That period of economic viability is approximately seven years. If course there is no defined limit; eventually you will want to do things with a computer that were not even envisioned when they were built, and you will want to upgrade. The oldest Mac still in my possession is a 1989 SE/30 with its maximum 32 MB RAM. It still works, but its nine inch black and white screen is a limitation. There wasn't much of an Internet in 1989.
Hard disk drives fail but are easily replaced, and they are rapidly becoming obsolete, and you can configure the iMac without one. Optical drives fail and they are already obsolete, also cheap to replace though. I have worn out many mice, but Macs don't use them any more either. Batteries (for portables) have a depreciation cost of about 50¢ a week.
In the case of the 27" iMac I have tried and failed to get it to run hot using common "benchmarking" software stress tests. Nevertheless I have never been able to make the cooling fans become audible outside of hardware testing. The i7 is extremely efficient and the iMac's large aluminum case serves as an effective heat sink.
Over time, Macs are the least expensive of all computers to own, and the most reliable. It's always been that way. Nevertheless the public was traditionally drawn to cheap, poorly made Windows boxes because of their low initial price. Hundreds of millions of them populate landfills all over the world. If you buy a desktop Windows PC, in all likelihood it will be out in the trash in about a year. Used Windows PCs command almost zero market value and it's difficult to even give one away.

  • Are there any good black box testing tools for j2me?

Is there any good testing tools available for testing software on physical mobile devices?
I would like to partially replace manual testing with automated testing using a test tool. It should work on physical devices, and with the help of a script it should be possible to execute predefined sequences of button pressings on the device. Preferably there should also be some way of deciding whether the test was a succes without having to do so entirely manually.
The purpose with this would be to make it easier to go through the test protocols, which has to be done before every new software release.
Deviceanywhere.com looks promising at first glance but it is rather costly. Still, does anyone have an opinion of it?
Does anyone has experience of Mobile junit for this kind of testing? Is it possible to define series of physical button pressings with it? At first glance it doesn't seem so.

Are there any good third party or otherwise apps and/or plugins for imovie'11?

    Re: Plugins for iMovie 11
Someone just asked this question yesterday. So I am cutting and pasting the answer From Bengt Warleby
    Hi
    You can not.
Nor to iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - They do not accept any Plug-ins.
How about FinalCut Pro X - I don't know but i regard to Apple way of progress - I doubt
For iMovie up to HD6 and FinalCut Express and FinalCut Pro up to 7.0 - there are plenty.

  • Are there any good tutorials on how to do digital paintings?

I have some drawings of mine that I wanted to turn into digital paintings. I can't find any good tutorials on YouTube. This is an example of something I would like to learn:

    These are my favourite
    http://www.ctrlpaint.com/
Digital Tutors has some good stuff
    http://www.digitaltutors.com/11/index.php?gclid=CNaF38q14MMCFQpwvAodMJwAbg
But you need to register an account for both of them.  Lots of titles out there if you look though.
The Bert Monroy titles on Lynda.com are also very good, but a slightly different style.  More illustration that digital painting.  Take a look at his huge Times Square graphic to see what he does.  Zoom way way in to see the incredibly detail
    Times Square
Loads of of tips and tricks in Steve Caplin's 'How to Cheat in Photoshop', and even better '100% Photoshop'.
Good luck and have fun.  By far the most enjoyable way to use Photoshop in my opinion.

Apple original used Verbatim as its own DVD blank, and Taiyo Yuden is one of the best companies producing writeable media.
I have Taiyo Yuden CD Rs from back in 1994.
And DVD Rs for about six years.
    Give them a try.

  • What can Apple do if my Iphone 5s has dust in its camera? The camera is very bad and can't take any good pictures. Can Apple do anything or give me a replacement phone if I go to the Store?

What can Apple do if my Iphone 5s has dust in its camera? The camera is very bad and can't take any good pictures. Can Apple do anything or give me a replacement phone if I go to the Store?

You can make a Genius Bar appointment to have the device looked at. If the device is still under warranty and they identify a problem, then Apple makes the final decision as to a replacement. If the device is out of warranty and they identify a problem, you would be offered the opportunity to purchase an out of warranty replacement at a discounted price.

  • I have discs but no longer have the laptop. Are they any good to anyone?

Hi, all. While cleaning out my garage (doesn't everyone do this over the Holiday break?) I ran across the box that my laptop came in, and inside were all the original OS X installation discs and reinstall discs. Are these of any use to anyone? I no longer have the laptop, nor do I know where it is. Can anyone advise?

    Welcome to the Apple forum.
The disks are usually specific to the computer, so you can probably trash them. They would not work on any computer.
Also, since you are running Cheetah, you would have done better posting in the 10.3 and earlier forum:
