Are combo updates totally independent on more recent non system updates?

Hi everyone!
Would reapplying the 10.5.7 combo update switch back to safari 3.2.3 (which was included in 10.5.7), when you already have safari 4 installed?
And if so, would safari 4 (and every update that came after the combo) show up in software update again, even though a receipt for it already exists in /Library/Receipts?
So are combo system updates totally independent on more recent non system updates, or would it mix up things (there was also additional RAW image support in the 10.5.7 combo and later came" Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.6")?
Just generally interested, what really happens, if reapplying the combo for possible troubleshoot is ever needed.

reapplying combo update will not affect any other updates. they are independent.

I would like to know what is the most recent version of the operating system that I can update to on my computer.
    Thanks.

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $29.00 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:

  • Issue with opening a site in SharePoint Designer 2010 -The version of SharePoint foundation running on the server is more recent than the version of SPD you are using, you need a more recent version of SPD.

I have a SharePoint site which I am trying to open in SPD 2010, I am getting the following error(some of my team members are able to open)
The version of SharePoint foundation running on the server is more recent than the version  of SPD you are using, you need a more recent version of SPD.
These are the ways I tried
    1) Earlier I have MS office 32 bit and SPD 32 bit, I uninstalled them and installed both 64 bit versions
    2) I uninstalled restarted my machine and installed it again still no use.
    3) I installed SPD 2010 Service Pack 2 of 64 bit
    4) I uninstalled the SPD 2010 and opened the site—site actions—edit page in SPD , then it asked me to install SPD 2010, then I installed and tried to open the same site, again same error.
    How to solve this issue?
I checked permissions also at that site level – I have full control like others. I don’t have access to Central Admin so where else I can check the permission settings?

    Please update us SharePoint version

    Hi,
This error generally arises when your system datetime is not in sync with the Domain Controller datetime. Try following steps:
    1. Check if the Windows Time Service is running on your machine or not. Try restarting this service and then restart host instances. Then run your script.
    2. If this does not works, have a look at this

    Hope this will help.

  • HT202879 I am stumped - trying to open a recent Pages file but error message says that I need a "newer version" of Pages.  My software updates show that there are no updates available.  I recently updated Pages but it is not consistent.

I am stumped - I am trying to open a recent Pages file (created with a newer software that I thought was correctly installed recently) but error message says that I need a "newer version" of Pages.  My software updates show that there are no updates available. Pages 09 version 4.3 shows as my current version.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

Good show...pleased to see the speed and performance of a ram based PKGBUILD.
My system has no HDD, is based on Compact Flash devices in Faunos.  I may give this procedure a tryout on a "Live" system.
    EDIT:
Faunos already uses tmpfs so I guess the PKGBUILDS already perform in ram along with the system via aufs for downloads.

  • Cannot update foxfire. every time i download it my computer says i have a more recent software.

I get a message to update foxfire. mac laptop. i follow instructions and when directed to move icon into applications i am told that this is an older version of what i have. i have mozilla 5.0
    what do i do?

That is usually caused by the OS getting confused by the release or builds dates dates of the various Firefox versions. Firefox 3.6.19 has probably a more recent date than Firefox 5.0.1.
If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • Presently have 10.6.8, how to update to more recent OS?

presently running 10.6.8, how to best update to more recent OS?

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • Mac Pro won't boot to disk array after Mac OS 10.6.8 combo update. Array two partition are there, just won't start off them anymore. Help, please

My 2009 Mac Pro with Highpoint RocketRAID 3522 would no longer boot of the disk array as it had before. Boots off internal HD (still running 10.6.2), sees the array in the Finder, both volumes there pass Disk Utility Repair Disk tests, they show up in System Preferences - Startup Disk. TechTool Pro 5.0.7 sees nothing wrong with the primary boot partition. (didn't try the clone still with 10.6.7) **** frustrating. Tried reinstalling latest firmware for card. Nothing reported by the drives in way of any failure. zapped the PRAM, tried booting with option key, it doesn't show the array but two copies of the internal HD. Running out of ideas. Any out there?

I am having the same problem with my HPT 4321.  After upgrade, wont boot.  Shows up everyone as bootable disk (even when holding option at startup) but Mac will not boot off it.  I installed a fresh 10.6.8 copy onto a usb drive and HPT drivers work so might just be something to do with the main drive being bootable.  To complicate things, the Snow Leopard DVD doesn't have the drivers to see the array so cannot use it for troubleshooting.  It will not start in safe mode. Downloaded combo updater to try and re-update but it doesn't let you install it on another drive.  HPT driver installer doesn't allow you to install on another drive so also can't re-install driver.  Only choice seems to be install OS on new disk and recreate everything from scratch, then SuperDuper back to HPT drives and hope that it was a corruption during the update but not sure that it will boot even after all that work.
Anyone have a working computer with 10.6.8 and booting off a Highpoint RAID card?

  • Any more recent uniprocessor firmware update than 5.1.5f2?

I've got a 1.6GHz Power Mac G5, from the original line. I've got the most up-to-date processor firmware that I know of. Is there one I can't find somewhere on the Apple site that's more recent and could fully correct the occasional kernel panic issues I'm having?

Can't really do anything more, haven't seen the issue in a while, have other issues to deal with regarding this machine. Hopefully soon I'll be able to replace with a new iMac.

  • How I revived my MBA after 10.6.3 update: Combo Updater to the rescue!

Hi, just wanted to let everyone know how I managed to revive my MBA when it would no longer boot after a failed update to 10.6.3 using Software Update.
I want to provide as many details as possible, so this will be looooong.
*The problem:* Late in the evening, I got a message from SU that new updates were available. I downloaded the updates to 10.6.3, iTunes 9.1, and three other apps. The machine logged me out, did the install and then suddenly quit with an error message when the whole process was about 95% complete. It immediately rebooted as well but got stuck at the Apple logo and the spinning gear. I could only power it down by holding the power button >4 secs.
*What I tried:* I used a PC to go online and look for help. So I tried: an SMC reset, a PRAM reset, a safe boot (hold Shift key) and a single user boot (hold Command-S). Nothing worked. Slight panic, as the MBA cannot work in target disk mode (no Firewire!) and I had not yet activated Time Machine.
Luckily, I had installed Boot Camp some days ago and a version of Windows. With the new Boot Camp 3.1, Windows can read the Mac HFS filesystem. As it turned out, Windows booted fine and could indeed read and copy my files (with total disregard for any security... nice). So my most important docs were safe.
Still no Mac OS X boot though. Holding Command-V at boot (which allows you to watch the boot process) showed that the machine consistently got stuck after loading AppleCPUPowerManagement (or similar). After doing the SMC reset, it seemed to get stuck a little later, when listing the allowed WiFi channels in my region. However, nothing could get it to boot.
Now I do own an MBA Superdrive so I could boot from the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD. Running Disk Utility showed that nothing was actually wrong with the SSD. It just refused to boot. So I opted to do a 'backup and install' of 10.6.0 from the DVD. It took quite a while, but ran through okay. However, after restarting, the MBA would still not boot. Argh!
*The solution:* Like many Mac users, I did not know that Macs can boot from USB drives. But Intel Macs can! So I went over to my wife's Mac Mini and used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a 1:1 copy of its system drive on a portable HD. I could at least boot my MBA now and backup my personal files in proper Mac format. Right? Eh, no. The boot went well, but under my wife's username I was of locked out of my own home directory. There are probably utilities to circumvent this, but I tried something different first.
I had read on the web that the huge 'Combo Update' files for Mac OS X sometimes do a better job at updating all necessary files. They also allow you to write the update to a different HD than the current boot drive. So... still working off the copied Mac Mini disk, I downloaded the 10.6.3 Combo Updater (>700MB!) and applied it to the MBA's boot disk. It took ages, seemed to get stuck at several points (I really hate not having a drive activity LED) but finished.
Restarted my MBA and presto! Everything fine. Immediately did a full backup and a software update of course. My MBA had gone from 10.6.2 to 10.6.0 to 10.6.3 - Safari, Java and a number of other things needed updates. But it went well.
Hopefully this'll work for some of you too. I'd try booting from a different disk first and running the Combo Update. It will probably solve your problems.

sebuchen1954, sometimes an audio problem can be completely independent of a video problem; for example, when GoToMeeting 4.1 ran on my computer, the video worked fine, but the audio was straight out of +Alvin and the Chipmunks+ when it went through a USB headset. (That problem was fixed in GoToMeeting 4.5.)
Is your partner running the latest Windows version of Skype (4.2.32.155 at this time)?
Since your partner has Windows, perhaps [AIM|http://products.aim.com/windows] (version 7.2.6.1 is currently the most recent version) would be a functional iChat analogue for Windows?

  • Do Combo Updates include new hardware drivers / info?

So I'm having a debate with fellow OS X techies and we're split and would like to know a more definitive answer.
Do OS X Combo Updates actually take into account new hardware released after the .0 release of an OS? So for instance, 10.6 was released. Since then several Mac models have been introduced. Can I use the 10.6 retail DVD on the newer Mac models if I cannot locate those discs, and then run Combo Update to 10.6.4 on say a recent MBP? Or must I use the 10.6.3 MBP discs and move to 10.6.4 for true compatibility?
When 10.6.5 is released to the public, can that be used for the new Mac Minis that have a special build of 10.6.4?

Here is one case right now the Mid-2010 Mac Pro all run OS X builds that are later than 10.6.4 (and there are likely changes even here every two weeks as they ship). Drivers needed for new graphic cards (ATI 5870 and 5770) are newer than ATI drivers for say iMac 2010 that has an ATI graphics unit.
And changes to support new processors, memory configurations, native booting into 64-bit kernel mode, to name a few changes.
Eventually all of those changes should make their way into general available standalone updates (delta and combo) at some point.
As for your need to build images, I'll leave that to others to sift through. My gut feeling, that OS X Server is the only time/place that would fit in. Windows Home Server NAS products like HP Smart MediaServer NAS support TimeMachine, SuperDuper, and ability to manage a mix of Macs and PCs. Something an Xserve in a client-server environment, with even more tools to deploy and handle remove images and push updates (and store updates locally rather than each seat have to redownload all over again).
Nehalem family of processors shipped in early 2009, before that was Penryn and found in say Mid-2008 iMac, Early Mac Pro 2008 (I'm sure you know or can find that on Apple or even Wikipedia on Macs and Intel processors).

  • Stuck iMac during 10.6.2 to 10.6.8 OS combo update

    Dear community,
I recently had to wipe out an iMac HDD and reinstall the OS. The install DVD contained OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and I wished to upgrade to Mavericks (10.9) by doing an intermediate update to 10.6.8, as required by the new OS installer.
After a successful disk erase & OS installation from DVD, I tried to update the OS by using the 10.6.8 Combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399, which was located on an external hard drive. Just before finishing the update, the screen went black and there was no way to recover the system. Fan and internal HDD were both spinning, so the system was stuck for an unknown reason.
After waiting for 15 minutes, I decided to switch off the computer manually with the power button, and since then the iMac won't boot any more. Here's a list of what I tried:
    - Boot from cd ("C" during startup): impossible, another disc is currently in the drive, and can't eject it
    - Safe mode: won't load in 30 minutes, I guess it won't load at all
    - Reset NVRAM: no effect
    - Single user mode:
          - "fsck -fy": no effect, volume is OK;
          - reinstalling the updates from within su mode "softwareupdate -i -a" (hoping to reinstall it and get rid of the possible crap): impossible, there is no network connection.
Any help would be very welcome

Thanks for the hint, I managed to eject the disc holding the mouse click and inserted the OS DVD.
This doesn't solve the problem though, I can't boot from it (holding "C" has no effect, nor has the "Alt" key).
Reading the verbose boot output, things seem pretty bad:
    jnl: unknown-dev replay_journal: from some_decimal: to some_other_decimal (joffset some_hexadecimal)
    jnl: unknown-dev replay_journal done.
Maybe broken filesystem, but I can't explain why external boot mode doesn't work…
