Are disk images ejected when computer is shut off?

My computer just shut off on me unexpectedly, something is wrong with me and I need to take it to get fixed, but I had a disk image open with personal files in it including social security information and the likes, and I wouldn't want them to be seen by whoever is fixing my laptop, and I was just wondering if it would have been ejected when the computer shut off? Thank you!

Yes, they will be ejected. However, if the image files are on your hard drive, then anyone could gain access if they aren't encrypted images.

  • Help! Computer arbitrary shuts off since installing new iPod Nano!

I got an error message when I installed my new iPod nano (sadly I didn't think to write it down so now I don't know what it said) but ever since then my computer just shuts off. iTunes doesn't have to be open for it to happen... It's even shut off in the middle of shutting down! I've tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling but my computer still seems to have a mind of its own. I don't have the slightest clue how to "uninstall" my ipod and I think ITS the problem. Any suggestions would be VERY appreciated! I'm so frustrated!

ever since then my computer just shuts off.
Are you getting any sort of blue screen prior to the PC rebooting? If so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x\[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
If the blue screen mentions a specific file (for example, “ati3duag.dll”), let us know what that is called too. (Exact spelling, please.)
Here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
If you're not seeing a blue screen (or if you’re just seeing a flash of a blue screen before the PC reboots), we can use the following technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.
With those settings in place, does a blue screen appear before the PC reboots?

  • Computer randomly shuts off..

Whenever I'm on battery power (even if it's at 99%) if I open up a program that uses up a lot of memory (like Photoshop CS2, or even Powerpoint) the computer automatically shuts off. I need this problem to stop because I use those programs on a daily basis and don't want to keep my computer plugged in all the time.

My iBook G4 is doing the same exact thing (of course it takes a much less taxing program, cause its a G4). Anyhow, this is happening to lots of people, at the same time. Thus, it would be strange if we all started experiencing logic board problems, etc at the same time with different model and year laptops. This sounds very similar to 2004ish occasion when the OSX update that brought us widgets caused rapid battery depletion and heat in iBooks (and maybe other computers). Disabling the widgets with 3rd party software solved that problem until Apple quietly fixed in subsequent update. Thus, I STRONGLY suspect this is once again a software issue. I hope someone has found the offending code and devised a fix. BTW, it only happens on battery, I have tried 2 different batteries one is very new, it has happened as high as 90% charge on a battery with 80% capacity left. If anyone has a suggestions or info (aside from it's my logic board, its my battery connection, etc) would be great, I basically can't use my laptop without my power cord, which makes it a portable desktop.
    Thanks.

  • If I stop moving the mouse my computer will shut off?

I turn on everything works fine but if I let it go with out moving the mouse the whole computer just shuts off.

Is this limited to Aurora? If you need a release build to test, you can use the "Portable" version from here: [http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla Firefox%2C Portable Ed./Mozilla Firefox%2C Portable Edition 27.0.1/]
Some monitors have an option to reduce power consumption or adapt to the brightness of content. It seems from past threads that this can affect Firefox even if other browsers are not affected. Example: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/981249 Screen dims].

  • Encrypted Disk Image - Eject on Sleep?

Is it possible to setup my computer so that an "open" password-protected Encrypted Disk Image will automatically eject itself on shutdown, sleep or logout. If so,how?

Disk image files are dismounted when the computer shuts down or restarts. In the "Security" system preference, you can set the computer to require a password to wake from sleep or screensaver.

  • Thunderbolt drive ejects when computer asleep

This is an issue with a 3.5 GHz Core i7 iMac running 10.9.4 and a Lacie 5 disc Thunderbolt external with a RAID 0 (3x 2TB drives) and a RAID 1 (2x mirrored 2TB drives).
At least once a week, and sometimes more, I wake my computer from sleep to discover that it has ejected the Lacie drive and all of its RAIDs. I have yet to discover a commonality between instances when this occurs.
After logging in, if I launch Disk Utility to attempt to remount the drive, it beachballs and hangs and has to be force quitted. This happens every time that the Lacie drives have been unmounted during sleep. Looking in System Information, however, it does see that the drive is there.
Powering down the drive and restarting it also fails to remount it.
Unplugging it (loathe as I am to do so at the risk of data corruption if there is data being transferred), likewise does not remount it.
Only restarting the computer appears to remount the drive and its RAIDs. However, restart also hangs and the computer has to be force shut down in order to restart.
Running Disk Utility while the drives are mounted passes all of the drives, and the Lacie RAID Monitor likewise shows all the drives as healthy.
Additionally, in Energy Saver, I have "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" unchecked as I understood from Lacie tech support that that could be an issue but it hasn't resolved the noted behavior.
Suspect entries in Console, logged in the middle of the night while the computer was asleep on the last instance of the drive unmount is the following kernel log and then a subsequent fsevent attempt to find the drives two hours later:

Needless to say this is driving (no pun intended) around the bend! Anyone with similar issues or ideas for resolution with their Lacie (or non-Lacie) thunderbolt or usb devices?

    Hi Richard,
    A somewhat similar issue for me, on a 2013 Mac Pro (3.5GHz 6-Core Xeon E5) with my 3-day old G-RAID with Thunderbolt 4TB (RAID 0, 2x2TB).
The main difference in my case is that the computer is not going asleep...one slice of the raid would go offline while I was using the computer, but not particularly that drive. This has happened 3 times in 2 days. The drive icon disappears from the desktop and I get the popup warning me that the drive was not ejected properly.
Power cycling the drive for a *short* period of time does not correct it; the drive does not come back online. Disk Utility can see the RAID set and says one stripe is "missing" and hence the set is "offline".
Most recently, disk utility then beach balled, restart could not kill it, and I forced the power off. However, the other times, if I recall, simply leaving the drive powered off for a longer time seemed to right it. It would remount, and disk utility said there was nothing wrong with it.
I too have been leaving "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" unchecked as well. (About that, every time I enter the Energy Saver panel, the console spits these out:
    2014-08-22 9:14:26.706 PM System Preferences[896]: **** ERROR: *** -[ESGraphicsOptionsController _coreGetGraphicsStateForSelector:]: AGCGetMuxState() failed
    2014-08-22 9:14:26.706 PM System Preferences[896]: **** ERROR: *** -[ESGraphicsOptionsController _coreGetGraphicsStateForSelector:]: AGCGetMuxState() failed
    2014-08-22 9:14:26.707 PM System Preferences[896]: **** ERROR: *** -[ESGraphicsOptionsController _coreGetGraphicsStateForSelector:]: AGCGetMuxState() failed
Makes me wonder if the settings are really taking hold )
Console entries around one of the offline-drive incidents are as follows (I don't think the first 3 or the last one are related):

Since in my case it only seemed to affect one stripe of the RAID set, I am inclined to think it is a hardware problem, but I'm no expert. I've been hoping for it to fail again this evening, so I can collect some more evidence and then just exchange it for another. But so far, it's been working like a trooper.

  • Is it safe to back up a disk image file when it's mounted?

    Hi -
I use some small, encrypted ".sparsebundle" disk image files to keep my diary, banking info, etc., on. When I'm at the computer, I keep them mounted all the time.
Is it safe to let Time Machine automatically back up the .sparsebundle disk image files, even while they are mounted? Or would there be a possibility the backups would be corrupted, if the operating system hadn't written out cached data or something to the disk image file?
In other words, if I save any open documents on the mounted disk image, does the disk image file on disk always contain the fully-saved document and a consistent file system? Or could there still be some data cached in RAM, that would not be saved at the time the .sparsebundle file was copied? Is it always necessary to unmount a disk image before duplicating its .sparsebundle file?
Do I need to turn off Time Machine's automatic backup, and just do manual "backup now" after unmounting the disk images? That's a major pain in the behind... I really want to just let Time Machine do it's hourly backups as usual, but of course there's no point if the backups are corrupt.
Of course my own guess is "to be safe", I should unmount them before backing up. But again it's a big pain if it's not actually necessary. Does anyone know for sure?
    Thanks...

My understanding is that Unix, generally, doesn't write everything out to disk immediately. There is caching in RAM to speed up disk access, including modified superblocks, modified inodes, and delayed reads and writes. Now, if you ask to read an individual file, the kernel makes sure all the cached data is written before it returns the read data. But if you try to do, for example, a block copy of the whole filesystem, the kernel doesn't know that, and there's no guarantee or expectation that the filesystem will be in a coherent state.
That's the purpose, for example, of the "sync" command - to write all this cached data to disk before unmounting, shutting down, etc., and, that's why the OS gets so upset if you just unplug a firewire drive. Because even if you've saved and closed any open documents, they haven't necessarily been fully written out to disk yet.
So what I don't understand, is how people are ever able to back up mounted disk image files without them getting corrupted. I mean, you'd think they would get corrupted all the time. It would be the equivalent of just unplugging your firewire drive before you made a backup of it, or of doing a block copy of a read/write mounted filesystem. There ought to be a very good chance of the filesystem being scrambled. So, why does it not happen?
Is there something different about the Apple filesystem, or Apple disk images? Or, maybe we're only talking about delay times in the cache of fractions of a second, so as long as you haven't written anything within a few seconds of the copy, and don't write anything during it, you're ok?
Even if Apple reps won't answer my question, the kernel and most likely all the low-level disk i/o and filesystem stuff is open source. Surely there's someone out there who would be knowledgeable enough to give a definitive answer? I was hoping to find someone like that here... I do appreciate your taking the time to answer my post, but maybe I need to go elsewhere, on some developers' mailing lists or something? Does anyone know of such a place I could start looking?
    Thanks...

  • Disk Utility: new disk image takes forever- computer unresponsive-HELP!

    Hello,
I'm using Disk Utility to create a "new disk image from folder." The folder is on one Lacie exernal usb drive, and the target location is another Lacie usb drive (150 GB free).
The folder is 55GB. After 3+ hours, the activity window still shows "creating image" though the progress bar has changed from blue to pulsating blue/white stripes and I have the spinning beach ball of death.
Computer is unresponsive and the only way to terminate is to press the pwr button until everything shuts off.
Why is disk utility hanging like this? (or does it take more than 3 hours to create an image 55GB in size?
I've had no issues with previously creating images, though these were all 15GB or smaller.

USB takes forever....the reason I got a Firewire Ext. Drive.
It's soooo much easier to make a clone doing the following.....
I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on PPC Macs but are on some Intel Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on PPC Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

  • How do I keep my computer from shutting off when I plug in my iphone

What do I need to do to keep my computer from shutting down each time I plug in my iphone?

        Hello goldeeneyes!
I'd love to tell you how to adjust your screen settings. Keep in mind that a longer screen timeout may drain your battery significantly, so you may wish to change it back when you are not using your knitting application.
Please go to Settings>Display and change the Sleep to a longer period of time. Happy creating!
    Thank you,

  • Disk Images and another computer?

    Hey everyone,
I recently created a disk image on an external hard drive with my MBP (so I could password-protect sensitive work data). I was wondering if anyone can confirm that if my MBP broke down, I could plug my external drive into ANOTHER Mac and could open the disk image with the same password I've used to protect it? I just want to make sure the disk image is not specific to my one MBP computer. Thanks.

    Yes you can.

  • Computer inadvertently shuts off

    Hi there,
I have an HP Pavillion a6600f that's been upgraded to windows seven ultimate (32 bit). In the last  couple of weeks, it has been shutting off randomly(?) while I'm using it. In the last couple days it has happened 3+ times each day. I have run malwarebytes full scan twice, as well as a bitdefender full system scan once. There are no problems. I have checked for hard drive problems (tune-up utilities). I have upgraded all drivers that I could from the hp site. I have opened up the tower and cleaned it out extensively. Probably made no difference, it isn't even close to overheating and it wasn't that dirty. It doesn't make any funny sounds. Yet, the problem persists.
There is no one particular activity that I'm doing on the computer when it shuts off. I could be watching videos, surfing the web, playing games, listening to music,  etc., or some combination of things. Possibly after just a few minutes to a few hours, suddenly, the screen, without any warning whatsoever, will fade (fade takes about 1sec), and then the screen is black. Sound will continue for about 5-10 seconds, then stops, and then the whole pc will shut down (screen is black throughout). If I wait a few minutes (it restarts eventually, which i find rather odd), or start it up again (without switching the power bar completely off), then when I turn it on and log in, it will resume to exactly where I left off.
Now the question is: is my power supply failing? Should I back up my pc to my 2TB seagate external drive right now to be safe, or is there nothing to worry about? I figure that if the problem worsens, I'm just going to save whatever I can from my hp and buy a new computer. It's a few years old now, but how can I be sure that the power supply is failing? Could there be any other causes?
Any support is much appreciated. Thanks in advance,
    Troy

    Troy, welcome to the forum.
The symptoms that you describe certainly do sound like a PSU problem.  It is surprising how many different types of problems can be caused by a failing PSU.  Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot the problem.  The PSU is the most replaced component in a computer.
I definitely suggest doing a backup of your personal data.  I do this at least weekly; especially data and photos that I can't replace.
