Are drives with the same name differentiated?

I'm running OSX 10.6.8 and three external drives on which data is stored (a main drive, A-Data, and two backups). A friend may decide to help me with a project and to do so will have to have the same setup. Naming the drives on the second system is of some concern to me, so I did some research.
The fellow at http://www.cnet.com/au/news/drives-in-os-x-appearing-with-1-appended-to-their-na mes/ states:
If by chance you mount two drives of the same name, because the system can't create two mount points with the same name it appends sequential numbers to new mount points as they are created, and therefore you will see the numbered drive names in the Finder.
Unless I misunderstand what he is talking about, I found that I can have two drives with the same name. I can have two drives named A-Data on my desktop. And therein lies my problem (maybe). The project involves Premiere and several of it's sister programs, all of which require external files (video, audio, stills) to be linked, not stored within the working file.
QUES 1
Are disks with the same name distinguishable by OSX or software?
QUES 2
Assume that
I am working on a project which is saved on A-Data (and all the project links are to files on that particular A-Data)
I then connect another disk with the same name (and with the same folder structure), and backup my files to it.
I then eject the first A-Data and open the project on the second A-Data.
Will the software say that it can't find the linked files (because they are on the ejected disk), or will the project open as normal?

Avoid having the same names if at all possible, especially if you use apps that 'link' to the media via the file path.
The file path is set by the order in which the disks mount, which can change across reboots.
To see what is going on by using Disk Utility…
Select the first volume, look at the mount point (a blue link at the bottom of the Window) …
/Volumes/A-Data
Now connect the second volume & select it, look at the mount point…
/Volumes/A-Data 1
Now reboot, power off the first disk, leave the second one on & power disk one back on when the OS has competed booting. They will show the same paths, but each disk is now the 'other' disk - this makes a big mess for Apps like Premiere.
The only way to make this work is to clone every file to be identical on both disks, and never use Premiere (or any app that links to media) when both disks are connected. Otherwise you risk linking to media files on 'A-Data' and 'A-Data 1'.
Premiere must have tools for sharing projects - look at them before using disk names in this way.
You could however clone 'disk 1' to 'disk 2' & then rename it on the second Mac (to make them identical to fix the paths for Premiere), just avoid bringing them to one Mac with the same disk names. It does make more headaches in future though, because your friend will add new media that you need to migrate back to your disk.

  • Trying to backup one of my iPhoto libraries I keep getting a error message that basically says that the file could not be backed up because there is another file on the external drive with the same name, etc. There is no other file.

While trying to copy one of my iPhoto libraries to an external hard drive I get the following error message "You can’t copy “iPhoto Library old” because it has the same name as another item on the destination volume, and that volume doesn’t distinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames." There is no other file on the external drive with this name. I have asked this question before and was told that there are some duplicate photos (files) in my library and I needed to go to "show file contents" and look at certain files to find duplicates and delete the duplicates. I did all of this and the library will still not copy and always stops copying in the exact same place on each attempt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You've been deleting your actual Photos.
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Best way forward now is to recover the surviving Originals from this library and start over from scratch.

  • New Nikon and keeping old - are files with the same names allowed?

I have been using the organizer catalog for all my photos for years.  When my wife got interested in photography I bought her a Nikon and added her photos into the same catalog - most of the tags overlapped since the pictures are mostly of family and around town.  This worked out fine since I used a Canon and the file names were different
Recently I looked for a new camera (its been years and I wanted to move up).  Thinking that it made sense to share accessories and lenses I got myself a new Nikon - a different model than my wife has if that matters.  (No Nikon -Canon discussion please).  Of course now all the pictures that I take are named in the camera and have exactly the same names as my wife's pictures already in the Organizer catalog.
I haven't tried to import my pictures yet, but I seem to remember that the Organizer catalog won't import a "duplicate" picture even if its in a different folder on the hard drive.  So the question is, how does Organizer know whether a picture is a duplicate or not?  If it looks for filenames then it won't import my pictures (or worse, it will import my pictures and will "overwrite" my wife's - not on the hard drive in a different folder, but in the catalog - or just mess up all the tags etc.).
The only thing I can think of is to download my pictures directly to the hard drive and batch rename them in Irfanview (like add my camera model to the front of the filename) and then import these renamed pictures to the catalog.  This adds a few steps to the workflow over just using the Adobe Importer and allows more opportunity for me to mess things up if i'm not concentrating as I do all these steps, so its something I would like to avoid.
What do all you professional photographers with more than one camera do about this.  Should I just start a separate catalog - although the beauty of the PSE catalog is that I can locate all of the pictures I want with just a few clicks of the mouse without looking in more than one place.  Extra info - I'm using PSE 5.0.2 on Vista 32.
Thank you for reading this far.  All suggestions will be much appreciated.
    Blaine

PSE is smart enough to know that a file in a different directory with a different capture date and time is not the same as the photo you already imported. No need to rename beforehand.

  • Are libraries with the same name a problem?

In previous versions of FCPX, having the same event on two drives was a real problem.  I had backup drives that mirrored my media drive, and if I started FCPX before closing the backup drives, FCPX would warn me about the same event being present on more than one drive and potential corruption (the same may have been true of projects, too).
In 10.1, you can easily copy libraries to different drives in Finder.  But then both libraries have the same name.  Is that a problem like it was in earlier versions of FCPX (with events)?  Is there a potential corruption issue?
I've started renaming the libraries from with FCPX after I copy them (so, for example, I have "Day the Beach" and "Day at the Beach Backup."  I don't know if that's advisable or necessary, or even if I need to do the renaming from with FCPX rather than Finder.
    Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

A Library is completely self contained and should not pose any problem.
However placing a Backup ID makes good house keeping sense to me.

  • Need help moving pictures to a flash drive with the same name....

i can't figure this out.  i have several hundred pictures that i want on a flash drive for my digital frame.  apparently some of them have the same name assigned from the camera ex: dsc01403, etc.  sitting down and re-naming them is not an option for that many.  when i used windows and ran into this issue, it would just create a different file name.  so for example, i would have dsc01403 and it would create the second one as dsc01403 (2).  i can't figure out how to get the mac to do that.  the only options i get are "don't replace, stop, replace".  i tried the 'don't replace' option thinking that would do it, but it doesn't.
so first: did that make sense?
second: anyone know how to work around this?
    thanks!!

You won't be able to move your emails from aol.com to your Flash drive (they are on a website, not your computer) if you are using AOL desktop, you might be able to, but you probably won't be able to open them. Anyway, this is a firefox support site, not aol, I'd suggest contacting them.

  • Is it possible to connect to Drives with the same name simultaneously on Windows?

    Hello
I have used Adobe Drive to create two connections to two different servers which both have the same setup:
Server one: Adobe Drive webservice which is connected to a database called "DatabaseA"
Server two: Adobe Drive webservice which is connected to a database called "DatabaseA"
Both databases are called "DatabaseA", the servers are not connected to the same database.
I can add both servers as a Drive in Adobe Drive but I can't seem to manage to connect to them simultaneously on Windows while is does on Mac.
Are there any restrictions for this setup on Windows?
    Sincerely
    Matthias

on Windows, you can't mount two drives using AD, this is a limitation, we may support that in the future releases, thanks for your patience

  • Copying contents between hard drives with the same folder names erases data

I have Final Cut Pro assets stored in two hard drives. I was attempting to consolidate them into a single directory on one of the two hard drives. I did this by dragging and dropping the contents of one folder into the equivalent folder on the destination hard drive, meaning that several folder names were shared between the two directories.
In Windows, the only contents that would be overwritten are files and folders who share the exact same relative name during the copy procedure. However, OS X appears to have erased the entire contents of the destination folder in favor of the contents of the source folder.
Time Machine is not enabled: Not enough hard drive space to store everything twice.
Is this by design? Am I missing something? Is my data recoverable by means that would not cost me several hundreds of dollars? On a scale of 1 to screwed, am I screwed?

Seems like you did not select the content but the folder itself. Let's say you're copying from folder A to B. To only overwrite stuff in folder B with the same name while keeping other files & folders, you need to go inside folder A and select the content. If you do select folder A itself, it will completely replace folder B. This is normal behaviour and I'm sure it's the same with other operating systems like Windows.
This behaviour, of course, applies also to any subfolders within A & B, so you can't just use the Finder for such a +merge operation+. I'm not 100% sure, but since you were overwriting a lot of stuff, I'd say you're screwed and your data is gone, sorry.
To avoid things like that in the future, you might want to use software which has the ability to synchronize file structures. In Terminal you can use ditto for that, but there are several GUI apps out there, too. Just search http://www.versiontracker.com for merge or synchronize and you should find something.

  • Fixed Asset there are 2 activities with the same name.

    Hi,
I have a question about 2 transaction in ORFA transaction.
There are 2 activities with the same name, I don't know If I chose the first or the second activity for customizing Revaluation Areas.

    Hi,
This are two different options for revaluation.
Based on your country requirement this could be either.
Do you have a conutry specific documentation available that could answer this or did you check SAP OSS for further information?

I made a movie in iMovie then deleted the clips in it. I have reimported the clips in an event with the same name as previously and some clips in the movie are still saying source slip missing even though they are there. Some clips are fine in the movie, but most are just black and when I hover over them, it says source clip missing. How to I fix this? Thank You

I did that too, then I did a migration assistant to a new Mac and ALL of my movies have Source Clip Missing now, even though the original clips are still in the iPhoto Videos.  I can stand to re edit one or two projects, but not ALL.

Make a new folder and put them in that different folder. Then the names can be the same as others already on your drive.

  • Updating vs. Deleting Folder files with the same name

    Hello all,
Bear with me as I try to explain this.
First off, I'm a long time Windows user who just happily converted to Mac. I'm loving my mac so far, but I've run into a snag that I hope to get clarification on.
Let me set up a scenario on how this works with Windows.
Let's say I have two folders/root directories labeled as today's date "20100729" with image files in them. Each folder has different picture file names. In other words, the files in each of folders are different. The only thing that is the same is the Folder/Directory name, which in this case is "20100729".
So, in a windows environment let's say that each of these folders (with the same name) are located on 2 hard drives (A & B). If I take the folder from drive "A" and drop it in drive "B", windows seamlessly combines the files from both folders into one.
On the flip side, when doing the same thing on my Mac, the entire folder contents from drive B gets replaced from drive A, even though the file names are all different. Which is very annoying.
If you understand what I'm saying and know of a way for this to work the "Windows" way please let me know.
Thanks in advance for your help. Let me know if you need further clarification.
    Cheers,
    - Jeff

Use the ditto command in the Terminal, which is in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder; for instructions on its use, enter 'man ditto' without the quote marks into the Terminal prompt.

  • Mounting Remote Shares with the Same Name

I am accessing shares on remote servers and can mount volumes with no problems initially, using command+k and setting the Server Address to smb://ServerNameOrIP/SharePoint. This mounts a volume with the name of the share point. The problem I've run into is at work I need to mount 2 volumes on 2 different servers with the same share point name. These are shared servers, and for unrelated reasons the folder names on either server can not be changed. This doesn't work well for me. It creates the first volume with the name "Share" and a second one that in finder appears to be called "Share" as well, but if I use "Get Info" or in Terminal run ls /Volumes I can see that it actually gets mounted as "Share-1".
Is it possible to change the name of one (or both) of these mounts? Mostly so I can see which one I'm on when browsing though Finder. I changed some settings in Finder so that the title bar allows me to see whether I'm on "Share" or "Share-1" but that doesn't actually tell me what server I'm on. Any ideas?

I just discovered this after trying frivolously to get 2 shares of the same name from 2 different NAS drives to auto mount ....
limitation with autofs or something ? it should really be painless, as it is in windows. but it seems on the mac side, OS X won't allow shares with the same name to auto mount ....

  • Network volumes with the same name

    Hi everybody.
I recently got a Mac at the office. Yay! But I have an issue with network volumes. There are several machines I need to connect to using smb/cifs. Two of our development servers (Linux servers using smb/cifs) are configured to share each user's home directory. Naturally, my user name on both machines is the same, and therefore so is the name of the smb share. Unfortunately, MacOS X uses the share name as the volume name when it connects. This means I have two volumes with the same name, so I can't make any aliases or have any quick access to them. That's because aliases resolve to the first of them which was mounted, regardless of which of them they were made to originally.
Other people in the office use Windows to access the shares, which poses no problem because in Windows you either give the full path of the share (including host name, which makes the paths distinct), or map a distinct drive to the share. I also mount them from my Linux, but on Linux you explicitly give the mount point, and thus make it distinct.
Any way to make the volumes distinct on the Mac? Otherwise to make aliases resolve correctly in such a setup?

there are several ways you can deal with this. first, you can use command line mount_smbfs command. it does let you specify a mount point. you can easily automate the process of creating a mount point and mounting the share using automator so you don't have to do it by hand every time. and you can also add the automator workflow to mount the shares to your login items. then it will happen automatically on every login. lastly, you can use autofs or add entries to /etc/fstab to automount the smb shares on startup. both methods let you specify mount points too. see this link for details

  • Multiple volumes with the same name

If I look at my /Volumes folder using Finder>Go>Go to Folder.. I see seven different volumes all starting with the same name:
    MyName
    MyName 1
    MyName-1
    MyName-2
    MyName-3
    MyName-4
    MyName-5
(as well as my external drive and iMac HD)
MyName has a folder icon, and contains 1 folder called Backup which then has my 1Password.keychain in 7 different versions.
MyName 1 and MyName-1 are aliases and have icons for shared volumes. The only differences I can see are that in "MyName 1", the folders for Backup, Groups and Library are all displayed as aliases, whereas in "MyName-1" they are displayed as standard folders.
MyName-2 through MyName-5 all have folder icons and are empty.
I can understand that I could have a local and remote copy of my iDisk, hence the "MyName 1" and "MyName-1" volumes, but why all the others?
Should I delete any of MyName-2 through -5?
Is any of this slowing down iDisk syncing or searching?
    Thanks in advance

    I have the same problem
an external firewire drive "232 GB" is gaining an extra, sequentially numbered, mountpoint in /Volumes/ each time it is unplugged and re-plugged.
    This is a bit of a pain as Xtorrent is downloading to a folder on this drive and so, whenever it is unplugged, I have to either;
    restart all the downloads or,
before launching xtorrent, go into /volumes/ and delete the last mountpoint (so the system automatically adds the one Xtorrent is expecting)

  • Multiple lovs with the same name on the same module/form

I've noticed that in this case in a generated fmb LOVs get renamed so that first remains with the same name, next one gets 1 at the end, next one 2 and so on.
What I haven't found yet is the rule by which they are sorted, i.e. which one gets 1, which one 2, which one remains with the same name...
I've tried with the usage sequence of the LOVs but that seems to have no influence.
    Anyone has any clues?
