Are Extension Cables Bad?

I would like to plug my router in upstairs at it is in a central location and it gives much better wifi recepetion. I hacve purchased a 7M flat RJ-11 ADSL modem cable, it is like the cable that comes with the Home Hub originally but it's just much longer.
So I was wondering. Will having it setup like this reduce the speed or reliability of my broadband?

Infinity, I wish. I am on a tiny exchange serving only 1000 lines so no hope for me with Infinity unfortunately. Thanks for the answer I'll give it a go.

  • MAC PRO USB Problem - Traced to bad Apple Keyboard Extension Cable

I found a fix to a problem synching to my itunes Library on my early 2008 MAC PRO.   The Apple supplied USB extension cable for the keyboard was defective.
The symptoms were hangs in itunes and finder synching to iPods and transferring data to USB hard drives. The iPods and hard drives never lost power and no errors/log entries were made. The transfers simply stalled and would not continue. itunes and finder would hang until the drive or ipod was removed. These devices were installed directly to USB ports on the MAC PRO. No other USB devices were connected except for the aluminum keyboard and mighty mouse; the mouse was connected to the keyboard. The keyboard was connected using the USB extension cable that shipped with the MAC PRO.
Hardware diagnostics were all clear. The keyboard and mouse never had any connection problems. Only itunes syncs and hard drive copies would fail; these would occur at random times. I had an open ticket with Apple to have the logic board replaced as it was diagnosed to be a hardware/USB problem.
Removal or replacement of the extension cable on the keyboard (which was connected to a different USB port and NOT in the USB chain with the ipod and hard drives) permanently fixed the problem. I cancelled the Apple HW replacement.
I have noted several posts with others having problems with USB ports and devices. I wonder if Apple has an unknown problem with bad keyboard extension cables.

I think you may be onto something there. I'm just a few weeks into my second Mac Pro and again it's having the same USB problems which led Apple to give me a replacement machine previously. I went through several weeks of considerable testing with Apple Engineers prior to that - an Apple Care application to collect data from my machine, Apple Developer USB prober and two clean installs. The latest machine initially showed no sign of the problem then it started again - 2 iPods "can not be read or written to" part way through sync, Aperture quitting importing from USB SD card reader, USB drives dismounting etc. So I pulled out the Aluminium keyboard and, lo and behold, the iPods managed to get all the way through synching without errors. I really like the alu keyboard so it's a huge shame that it might be the cause of all my problems so far - and the Mac Pro is otherwise a beautiful computer.
But is this really a hardware problem of the internal USB cards and power management or supply?

  • Power plugs and extension cable queries

    Hi,
I am using a Netgear router with the Open reach modem for Infinity 2. Where they are located at the master socket I have 2 electric points. I have a 5 plug extension cable in one for router, table lamp etc. I read that the modem should not be plugged into a plug extension cable so I have the modem plugged into the second electric point. I wish to use my hh3 as a WiFi range extender upstairs via powerplugs. As you're not meant to plug powerplugs into extension cables I'll need to put the modem into the extension lead. Is that a really bad thing to do?
Will it matter that my Netgear throws out 5 and also 2.4ghz but the hh3 as the WiFi range extender is 2.4 only?
Is there a step by step on how to set the hh3 up as a WiFi range extender? I've Googled it but can't really see anything simple.
    Thank you

Try the powerline adapters and see if they work.
It will not matter if your Netgear uses both bands, just make sure its on a different wifi channel that the HH3 extension.
This guide should help, just setup the slave part, as the master is your Netgear router.
If your Netgear router uses a different subnet than the home hub, you will either have to change it, or alter the HH3 setting to match it, as both have to on the same subnet. It may be easier to change the Netgear, as the home hub can be a bit temperamental when you start changing IP ranges
Link BT two home Hub 3s together and extend your wireless to another location.

  • Mini DVI to VGA Adapter w/ extension cable

I would like to get a Mini DVI to VGA Adapter for my macbook. Does anyone know how it would would if I used it with a VGA extension cable. Any experience will be helpful

Depends on how long the cable is, and if it was of sufficient quality for computer use. The higher resolutions require better quality and shorter cables. You may get some signal loss for long cables. A standard monitor cable that comes with a computer monitor should be fine, but what kind of length extension cable are you talking about?

I recently purchased a shutter release remote for my IPAD camera but the cord is only three feet long and I need an extension cord.  I purchased a 3 banded AV extension but it doesn't work.  I have been told that I need an extension cord that has AV and Mic to enable the remote shutter release to work with the extension cord.  Can anyone tell me what the correct extension cable is and where I can find one?  Thanks.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Need ADC extension cable

I can't believe I am having so much trouble finding an extension cable!!! I have a 20" cinema display (2004) with permanently attached ADC cable and a G5 (2004) with an ADC input. It works great but I must move the CPU further from the monitor and the cord will not reach. I have found 2 cables; one from Dr. Bott and one from Griffin that would do the job but they are all discontinued! I've searched the web, my local reseller, and nobody has it. They must have made thousands of these things but the only place they seem to have them is Australia. I can't even find one on Ebay. Am I doomed to a life where my monitor must always be 4 feet from the CPU? What else can I do? Could I use ADC to DVI cables and adapters to somehow jury rig it? Apple- how can you invent and then abandon a connection system and leave thousands of people flapping in the breeze??? Thanks.

  • Thunderbolt extension cable for apple display?

I was so excited when I received my Promise Pagasus raid system. But there is a problem:
I have a macbook pro, an Apple thunderbolt display and now I would like to daisy chain the Pegasus between the display and the computer. The problem is that the cable coming from the display is extremely short after the point where it splits up. Unless I put the Pegasus (a large box) right next to my laptop on the desk (no room for that) I cannot daisy chain. A thunderbolt extension cable would do the trick, but they do not exist?
I am sure somebody else has run into this problem, please share your solution.
    Thank you!

    - Just to verify... your MacBook Pro "HAS" Thunderbolt, correct??
    - You already have a "Thunderbolt Display"????   How did you manage that?  I haven't seen any in any store yet or heard of anyone else getting them yet.
    Danielle Smit wrote:
The display has 3 cables going into the mac:
    1. thunderbolt (this is where the data goes through)
    2. usb (provides the usb connection to the hub on the back of display)
    3. power (provides power to computer)
Are you saying there is a "USB" cable/connector coming from the display??  If so, that is NOT a Thunderbolt display.
From everything documented, the Thunderbolt display looks like this:  (the only cables built-in are the normal A/C power cable, then one main cable that has (2) plugs at the end... 1) the magnetic power adapter that connects to laptops... and 2) a Thunderbolt plug.
Is this what your display looks like?
*** OR ****   Does Your display ACTUALLY look like this one (which is the older 24-inch LED Cinema Display):  This one actually had a USB cable/plug as one of the "Built-In" cables.  If this IS what you actually have, it is NOT a Thunderbolt display, although it WILL still work with laptops and the hard drives that DO have Thunderbolt.

  • Recommended extension cable for Apple LED 27" to MacPro 2010?

Okay, from what I have read the cable on the 27" LED display is a bit short. I need to travel at least 5 feet from the desktop to where the computer sits. What do you recommend as an extension cable to help bridge the gap?
A while back they suggested this:
    http://www.cpustuff.com/mini-displayport-male-to-mini-displayport-female-extensi on-cable.html
    Any other choices?

Yup! I'm using 10.6.5 and see no problem with the cables.
I've always assumed that if audio can come through a mDP of the card then it was a physical property of the cables themselves (e.g., appropriate additional connector pins and the connections to them) that determined whether they could carry that audio signal. In other words I don't see what difference the OS version has to do with it. If audio isn't coming out of the mDP from one update to the next then some configuration data (maybe what's in the sound system preference) has changed and audio shouldn't come out even if no extension cables are used.
Also, I don't think any (pkg) installer, including system installers, are capable of updating the firmware in the video card.
One thing I might suggest is resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964). Sometimes that can "shake free" some of these sound "quirks"

  • Apple Pro Speakers extension cable? Anyone?

Sorry. Meant to post this in the G4 forun instead, and I don't want to cross-post. Perhaps someone here can help...
Looking to extended the distance from the G4 under my desk to the Apple Pro Speakers sitting on top. I've come up empty on my research so far, other than to find Griffin's discontinued extension cable, variously listed as "17-APSE Griffin Apple Pro Speakers Extension Cable" or "(4012-EXT) APS Extension Cable for Apple Pro Speakers" -- they've been impossible to find anywhere.
That said, are there any other alternatives? Even a makeshift solution that will work with the proprietary jack?
    Thanks,

  • Is there such a thing as a docking extension cable?

Is there a female-to-female extension cable where one end would plug into an iPod classic and the other to a docking port? Not dock to USB connector; one where the iPod would be "docked" and held in your hand.

I think you mean Female-to-Male extension. I was looking for one of these so that I could dock an iPod to the iHome without taking it out of the case. And yes there is, I have found two cables, one from CableJive and another found on eBay from Autoware302.
I think the CableJive cable is good quality but very expensive, about $36. The Autoware cable is under 20 bucks. I have not bought that one yet, so I can’t talk about the quality.
The OEM USB docking cable has a connector that is 1 1/32” wide. The opening in the OtterBox Defender case for my IPOD classic is the exact size for this connector. The after market products I have found are too wide to fit through the case. They do however fit through a Belkin Acrylic case that I have. The CableJive cable connector is 1 5/32” wide. I think the Autoware cable is 1 1/8” wide. Neither sounds like a lot, but it is significantly larger than the OEM connector. So I am still looking for the right cable for me. Anybody know of one?

  • Optimum extension cabling for 20-inch Cinema

I need to add up to 2 meters distance between my MacPro and my 20 inch cinema display.
Is there an extension cable on the market that combines the video/firewire/USB cables and thereby accomodate the original cable, or
Do I have to extend these cables separately?
I ran across a 3 meter extension for the video cable? Can I just connect this up and expect it to work or will some kind of booster or other active component be required?
Can firewire & USB be extended 2-3 meters without ill effects?
My ideal is a 2 meter extender cable that mates perfectly with the 3 functions in the original cable, and you just connect it up and go ... is this possible?

Thanks. Your reference puts me on the right trail.
The cited reference seems to imply there's a non-active version of the apple combo cable that would work for the 20 inch cinema ... but I'll be damned if I can find it. Hopefully I can get some direct feedback from Geffen about it.
Careful measurements show that I really only need to extend my original combo cable 3 feet. Are you proposing that I just use one of their 'copper' DVI extension cables, a gender adapter and separately buy extensions for the USB and Firewire.

  • Wired keyboard with/without extension cable?

One realizes that these days the sleek new Apple corded USB keyboards - those with nummeric block - in the unit sale (not as a component of iMac shipment)
are fitted with additional USB cable. It seams to be some sort of extension cable for convenient connection of other USB device.
However the keyboard of the same type delivered with sleek new iMac Late 2013 - the purchase was in February 2014 - was
not delivered with such additional cable. Nor the user manual for keyboard was attached. Instead of this
the Magic Trackpad ordered with that iMac got two hard copies of user manual.
Regarding the additional usb cable attached to corded usb keyboard is this a change conducted by Apple
between February 2014 and these days, or rather an error in shipment those days?

However the keyboard of the same type delivered with sleek new iMac Late 2013 - the purchase was in February 2014 - was not delivered with such additional cable.
Check that keyboard to see if it has a USB port on either side. Mine (ordered with a 2011 iMac) has one on each end.  If it doesn't then there's no need for an additional USB cable. I don't remember if it included a USB cable.
According to this Apple product page, Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad - English (USA), separately ordered wired keyboards with keypads come with two USB ports and an USB extension cable. However, when ordered with a iMac   Call an Apple store or Apple at phone number at the bottom of this page and ask if it should have.

  • Lengthening of an DC Power Extension Cable for my WVC54GC

    Hello,
i need to set up some new ip cams and my busbars are 6 meters away from the installation. i'm asking myself what would be the maximum lengthening of an DC Power Extension Cable i could safely use?
The "longest" cable i could find is this 3M DC Power Extension Cable. Since im not familliar with power supplys and electrical stuff i wonder if its save to put two or three of these extension cables in a row? What do you think?

    Mediengestalter wrote:
Thanks for your reply. We're talking about power cables and not lan cables - right? Because in case of power cables i never heard of "maximum data rates" and "actual data throughput". So hwat do you mean exactly?
Im sorry for that.. I misunderstood the question. What I thought is the LAN cable. Regarding the extention cable though, I still think it's safe to to put two or three extension cables.

  • BT Infinity - Home Hub extension cabling

    Hi,
I've been pursuaded by BT to upgrade from my current Option 3 to BT Infinity. However, my current Hub is in an upstairs bedroom while the master socket is in the hall. I want to keep these locations as I have 4 items connected to the Hub by ethernet.  I understand that the BT engineer will fit a new master socket and then run an extension cable (seems to be standard Cat5e) to the bedroom.
However, my wife is adamant that she doesn't want cable clipped to her newly painted skirting. Is it possible to route the cable externally using Cat6? Failing that, can I connect the Infinity Modem/Hub to the existing (voice) extension socket using a snatdard microfilter? This BT page http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13727/c/346 suggest that this is possible, although presumably we'd lose some speed.
I'm inclined to cancel the Infinity order, but when I rang BT they assured me that the engineer would be able to sort something out. Is this likely or am I wasting a day waiting at home?
    Cheers,
    Andy

OK, sounds like it's worth going ahead with the upgrade to Infinity. With luck I can pursuade the engineer to put the new master socket at the end of a voice extension. If not, I'll get him to wire up the new extension from the master socket in the hall to the hub in the bedroom but without nailing the cable to the skirting. I can then replace this with a pair of homeplug adapters.
Also, yes I'd spotted that the new hub has only three Ethernet ports so I'll also have to add a switch - unless I go the homeplug route and get one with extra ports. I'd prefer to keep my four devices connected by ethernet - these are a PC, a NAS acting as a media server, a NAS providing backup storage and a media player running. I don't want to shift any of these to wireless as there are already at least 20 devices registered on the existing hub...
    Thanks,
    Andy

  • 24" LED Cinema Display Extension Cable Question

Hi, I have a 24" LED Cinema Display. Unfortunately the display's cable is too short which means I have to have the cable in front of the desk in order to reach my Mac Pro. I don't like having it in front of the desk as it's an eyesore.
I've had it like this since I purchased the display in March 2009. I was thinking of purchasing an extension cable for my Display so I can finally put the displays cable behind the desk.
I have some questions, Are there any issues with having an extension cable attached to the 24" LED Cinema Display? Is there a loss in picture quality with an extension cable? What extension cables do you guys recommend?
    Any help is greatly appreciate
