Are fonts in Keynote displayed in pixels or points?

An interesting point which I never considered since I create my own designs using CSS.
I have always assumed that its pt. since we're taking print media here. This seems to be the case since the author of this Apple Training series book presumably knows!

Select the entire body level text box and change the font to Gill Sans, Regular, 36 pt. Make the font color the same dark red that you stored earlier.

  • Why do most of my fonts in Keynote track extremely tight?

    I am using Keynote '09 (5.3) on a MacBookAir. Most any font I choose (other than the standard fonts loaded in the templates) seem to track so tightly, any word seems to appear like a blob. The font is recognizable but the kerning is like negative 100! I cannot control this 'tracking' either.
    I found a post that offered to remove duplicates or re-install certain fonts but this should not be the issue--nearly ALL my fonts are affected this way!
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Before trying your solution, I launched Keynote again tonight and got this error (below). After the Safe Mode/Permissions Repair, Keynote displays the fonts correctly.

  • Embed Fonts in Keynote= PDF

    I've created a Keynote presentation in the current version of the application, which uses two non-standard fonts, Chalkboard and Chalkduster. I have exported the presentation to PDF and put it on a web-server so other people can see it. But the fonts defaut to Helvetica or something, on machines which don't have those fonts installed.
    Is there any way to embed or render these fonts so that the presentation appears as it does on the originating machine, when it is exported to PDF and viewed via a PDF reader on a Web Browser?

    That's very civil of you! But unfortunately, the Keynote version as presented had a number of embedded MP4 movies, so it is much too big to email.
    Actually on further investigation, if I create the PDF version and send it from my MacBook to the iMac, the fonts are embedded and do display OK. But, when I uploaded the PDF version (in which the movies were replaced with URLs) to the server via FTP, then the fonts wouldn't render properly in Firefox or Safari, when opened on the iMac. They would default to Arial, although with very odd spacing, which looked terrible.
    On this occassion, I will not continue with trouble-shooting as it was a presentation for a very small audience and possibly nobody will even access it, however if I need to repeat this procedure I will look into it further.
    FYI if anyone is interested, it was called 'A Brief History of Western Zen', given at the Buddhist Library in Sydney, and the url is http://www.dynamicdata.com.au/pdf/Brief%20History%20of%20Western%20Zen.pdf

  • Fonts Do Not Display Correctly in Safari and Firefox

    Certain fonts do not display smoothly in Safari and Firefox. They appear to have little pieces of the letters missing. I'm sure others have experienced this problem before but I could not find how to fix this. On the Apple Discussions the fonts look fine... on Google for example, they look messed up. I do not know specifically which font(s) are displayed weird but it happens frequently. This happens in Safari and Firefox on my MacPro and MacBookPro. Is there a setting to fix this?
    Thanks,

    Hello Flash, welcome to Apple discussions; )
    Look for Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic Fonts, if you have them,
    they can be the usual suspects.
    Check the Text encoding in both Safari & FF, under the "View" menu.
    In System preferences-> Personal (top section) in Appearance tab->
    on the last portion of the panel Font smoothing Style: set that to Automatic
    If those don't help, see this users tip excellent article Kurt Lang's ~ Font Management in Mac OS X

  • Some Language fonts no longer display correctly

    I have a few language fonts, specifically Russian and Church Slavonic, which I have been using for years without any problem. They still partially display correctly, but there are some characters which display a different character now. For instance, in the Church Slavonic font, there are many characters with diacritical markings, where those accents etc. are typed after the character and backed up over the character. They are not displaying correctly anymore. Plain Russian fonts as well have certain characters that aren't even recognized now. I am using PopChar Pro, and though they display correctly in its list, when I click on them, the wrong character is display in the text. Does this have something to do with Unicode? I use these fonts mostly in MS Word and Finale.
    Thanks for any help on this topic.
    Sima

    Yes, it is true that these fonts do not display
    correctly in Finale.
    Last I checked Finale could not do Unicode, so it may be another problem. If it can do Unicode, you should be able to use Lucida Grande and the Russian keyboard layout. If not, you should be able to use a font with CY after the name with the Russian keyboard. You might want to ask in the Finale forums:
    http://forum.makemusic.com/
    Is there any sort of application
    that can fix old fonts to be Unicode compatible?
    It would be very complex I think and require an expensive font editing program like FontLab.
    On another note, are you aware of whether Unicode
    includes Church Slavonic (I suppose it would be in
    the same category as Old Slavonic)?
    Yes, it does. Just look at the Cyrillic block in Character Palette. Or here:
    http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0400.pdf
    However you won't find all glyph variations -- that will depend on the font. For an example of Slavonic Unicode you can see the last item on this page:

  • Where are font preferences kept?

    I have this weird situation with the font window, the one you bring up in TextEdit when you select "Show fonts". The window that comes up as many invisible entries in my Favorites window. That is, about 5 lines show fonts I have saved as to size and color, etc. However below that are about 10 lines of nothing visible, yet if I have text selected and and click on those empty lines then it formats the text. Obviously there is something wrong since the font name and formatting does not show.
    I have tried to find out to reset this by looking for the preferences files that holds my settings but cannot find it.
    Does anybody know where it is?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Hi, Richard.
    The preference file that contains your font Favorites, as displayed in the Font palette (the "font window" you cited), is the file
    com.apple.Favorites.collection
    in your Home > Library > FontCollections folder. This folder also contains any font collections or libraries you've defined using Font Book.
    Good luck!

  • Din font won't display in pdf file since December update to version 11.0.10

    I upgraded my Acrobat to version 11.0.10 just before the Christmas break. Din font is my corporate typeface and I used it yesterday to create an invoice in Mac Pages only to discover that I cannot view the pdf as the font won't display in Acrobat. And to add to the problem my clients who are using the same version of Acrobat are unable to view the font either on the pdf. It all worked fine before the upgrade.
    What can be done to rectify the problem? I need to fix this asap.
    This error message appears when I try and open the file "Cannot extract the embedded font 'DQPJNL+DIN-Medium'. S"
    The DQPJNL bit changes depending on the file being opened but essential Din font won't display.

    Hi,
    Please check if DIN font is embedded in your PDF by going to File > Properties > Fonts
    If no, then you might need to go to 'Tools > Print Production > Preflight'
    Then, open the PDF fixups section, click on Embed fonts fixup and choose 'Analyze and fix button'.
    Please check and let me know if you are able to view the font now.
    Regards,

  • Font error in display

    Hi,
    I have some troubles with using a font in my keynote presentation. I'd like to add some greek letters, and in Font book I saw that Symbol is the right font to use, but when I change the font in keynote to Symbol, I get normal letters. How can I solve this?
    Thanks in advance
    Baloekiki

    Cracked it! Thanks dook. With a bit of fiddling around (I'm not wholly sure how, now) I went back into the Character palette which was showing Webdings. Clicked (I think) View All Characters > by Category >Punctuation> Symbols & found Musical Symbols, highlighted the flat symbol & clicked the Insert button. Voila!
    For the two earlier posters, there are European scripts, Arrows (I've been wanting some of them), geometrical shapes & all sorts in the special characters if you lurk around. I thought I had done that last night but dook's suggestion made me delve deeper. I'm always worried to click anything I don't know about incase I lose something vital or cannot get back to where I started!
    To save all that hassle in future I will probably keep what I want on a page & copy & paste them as I need.
    What would I do without these discussions pages?
    Again, many thanks for your help dook. As I didn't post the original question I don't think I can mark it as answered but as far as I am concerned you've answered it for me.
    Carol.

  • Fonts in Keynote

    Whenever I open any of the themes in Keynote, I get all kinds of error messages about missing fonts. i think that a ton of fonts got deleted from my computer somehow... does anyone know where I can get these back?

    Yes, there ARE fonts that are assumed to be there because they came with the OS. You don't have to re-install your entire OS, though. Instead, you should be able to pick what parts of the OS you want to install and uncheck everything but the fonts. Some use a tool called "Pacifist" to do this.

  • Foreign fonts don't display or print

    There are fonts that install with Mac OS that use non-Roman characters, e.g., Japanese, Hindu, and Korean. There is also a Greek font called Symbol. In the case of Symbol and some others, selecting the font means you get that font onscreen and at the printer. In others, for some reason, that doesn't happen. You select the font, e.g., Geeza Pro, Naskh, and Arial Hebrew, and what you get onscreen is Roman type. I'm trying to use a Greek font other than Symbol; I loaded it so that it shows up in Illustrator's list, but when I type with it, I get plain old vanilla Roman. What am I doing wrong or not doing at all? What does it take to make the font work? I believe it's a Truetype font, if that matters.

    What am I doing wrong or not doing at all? What does it take to make the font work?
    To type in another script on all modern computers you need to change the keyboard layout, not the font. You go to system prefs/language & text/input sources and check the boxes for the ones you want, plus the box for "Show Input Menu in Menu Bar." Then you go to the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen and choose your language and type. The font takes care of itself.
    An exception is if you have a old non-Unicode Symbol font on your machine. This maps some greek stuff used in math to the normal latin character positions, so changing the font will change the characters. But it is best not to use this kind of Symbol, because there is no guarantee that any modern computer will display greek instead of the latin dictated by current standards. Instead for greek you should use the greek keyboard layout provided.

  • Changing the default font in Keynote '09

    Can anyone please tell me how to change the default font in Keynote '09 masterslides to the one of my choice? I can't seem to do it by following the suggestions in Help.

    In a given theme, the default fonts are defined in a file whose complete pathname resemble to this one:
    Macintosh HD:Applications:iWork '09:Keynote.app:Contents:Resources:
    Themes:Black_8x6.kth:Contents:Resources:French.lproj:fontsAndText.strings
    Here is the path for the theme named "Black_8x6.kth" in its French version.
    The file contents is:
    "STYLESeries2" = "Series_2";
    "STYLE_None" = "Aucun";
    "STYLESeries5" = "Series_5";
    "STYLESeries3" = "Series_3";
    "FONT_LucidaGrande" = "LucidaGrande";
    "FONT_Helvetica" = "Helvetica";
    "STYLE_Free Form" = "Format libre";
    "STYLESeries1" = "Series_1";
    "FONT_GillSans" = "GillSans";
    "STYLE_Normal" = "Normal";
    "STYLESeries0" = "Series_0";
    "FONT_MarkerFelt-Thin" = "MarkerFelt-Thin";
    "STYLESeries4" = "Series_4";
    If you edit the underlined font names you will change the default fonts accordingly.

  • MacBook pro frozen and display is pixelated / fragmented

    I was watching an avi file through VLC when the computer froze. The sound continued but I could not force quit or use the mouse or keyboard, so I shutdown manually with the power button. I tried to reboot, but the Display was pixelated / fragmented (on the grey startup screen), and the computer was frozen. Again, I manually shut down, then tried to power on again in safe mode.. It began to load in safe mode, but as the bar was progressing it again froze (the display was still pixelated during this process. I let the computer rest for 20 mins while turned off, and then once more tried to reboot in safe mode.. Problem remained. I tried doing it with the power plugged in and out. It is about 5 years old this mac book pro, and is running on snow leopard, all software was updated  about a month ago (so I don't believe there are any software updates that it is lacking to run effectively).  Luckily I did a huge backup 2 days ago, but I have done some work in the meantime, and need my computer for work. I have booked an appointment at the genius bar, but was hoping some lovely person out there may have a quicker fix, or at least give me an idea of what I'm up against. Cheers.

  • Why are animated gifs not displaying animations in the preview?

    Why are animated gifs not displaying animations in the preview?
    My coworkers and I are not seeing a animation in the preview pane in Adobe Bridge CS6 even when clicking the play button in the preview window. However, we do see a graphic of the first frame and one person sees 1 frame when clicking play and one other frame and then the animation stops, however, that is not the complete animation.
    I'm using Windows 7 32 bit
    My coworkers are using a mac.
    One coworker has apple OS Mountain Lion with a Intel Quad-Core Xeon – 64 bit system.
    Is this fixable or in the works as a patch? Otherwise we have to open these docs in a browser in order to view them properly.

    I've just come to the realization that some animated gifs do play fine and others do not. A coworker of mine suggests that if it's an animation made via Adobe Photoshop, it'll work in bridge but will not if it's made using something else.
