Are i5 and i7 logic boards in the 27" imacs the same? i

Are i5 and i7 logic boards in the 27" imacs the same? i know that the i5 uses the 661-5429 p/n and the i7 the 661-5428 p/n but are they interchangeable?
Do they have the same sockets?
Thanks.

Perhaps the best news to come out of Intel's new line of i5 and i7 processors is introduction of a single socket for all Sandy Bridge Core i3/i5/i7 processors...
For now, however, the Sandy Bridge processors all use the LGA 1155 socket. In case you're wondering, this socket is not backwards compatible with previous LGA1156 processors - don't try it unless you like junking your hardware.

  • 400 and 500 Logic Boards

Are the 400Mhz and 500Mhz logic boards interchangeable? Can I put a 500Mhz logic board in a powerbook originally fitted with a 400Mhz board?

Yes, they are interchangeable. The only problem I can think of that you might encounter is that the installer DVD or CDs originally shipped with the 400MHz Powerbook may no longer be willing to install anything on it after the faster board is installed. If you have no further use for that disc, the problem won't arise, and even if you do, it may turn out to work just fine.

  • Late 2007 MBP went black screen. I've been told it is the logic board but not due to the Nvidia GPU

My sister's Oct 2007 MBP just died suddenly. Yesterday when she opened Entourage it said it couldn't open because there wasn't enough memory. We rebuilt the Entourage Identity and it then worked fine. It wouldn't shut down though, and when woken from sleep went gray then black. The apple store here in Spain says it is the logic board but not due to the Nvidia GPU, and it's not worthwhile to replace it. Is it possible they are wrong? They also say it will cost about 800 Euros to replace! It's a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo/2GB/256MB, EMIC No: 2136.

You don't in the condition it's in. You will either have to get the phone replaced by Apple or pay a 3rd party to repair it.
there seriously should be more than two ways to solve this other wise apple is useless and we will never buy another apple product.

I am using IDVD to create slide shows.  When viewed on my computer, the pictures are clear and of high quality.  When I burn the slide show to a disk and play it back, the pictures are blury and of poor quality.  Is there a setting that controls the quality of the burn and if there is, where do I find it?  Thank you.

The Mac software - iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD are not the best with the Ken Burns effect (zoom in/out effect), so you might want to minimize that effect; also, if your subjects are wearing stripes for instance, that will have an effect if you zoom. There is better software available for slideshows; however, I do not know of any that is free (and does a good job). I've used Photo to Movie for some time; it does a fine job even in HD, but you have to pay for it. I use iDVD extensively, but only to add a menu, theme, special effects, etc. and then to burn it.

  • Why are PS and SG asking me to choose between purchasing the product or a 30 day trial?

I have the one-year Creative Cloud Subscription and I downloaded several apps like Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and SpeedGrade.
However, when I start up Photoshop and SpeedGrade I had to choose between purchasing the product or register for a 30 day trial.
    Anybody who knows why?

Thanks a lot! I will give it a try!

  • Grey Screen at start-up - Troubleshoot harddrive and/or logic board?

Hi everyone. Sorry for the lengthy post, but hopefully you can help me - I've spent a lot of time on the boards already, but hoped you could clarify some things.
The problem is my Powerbook will not get past the grey screen at start-up. It will not boot off the 10.5 install disk and I can't eject the install disk to run the hardware test disk. Removing 3rd party ram, resetting PRAM, NVRAM, attempting to boot in 'safe' mode haven't helped. The harddrive is softly clicking/searching.
    So some questions:
    1) Is it possible that an interrupted time machine backup will bork the drive to the point where it wont boot? (See back-story below). I wouldn't have thought so, but prove me wrong.
    2) Should I be able to boot from the install disk if the harddrive is stuffed?
    3) If it is hardware, it's either the logic board or the drive. Is there any way to determine what it is (eg: is it possible to do a remote hardware test?)
Edit: Just tried mounting the drive in target disk mode using an iBook, but it wouldn't mount. Powerbook displays a black screen.
Oh, and I should point out that this is well out of warranty and any fixes would have to be cheap : ). Basically I need to determine if it's the drive or the logic board, preferably without having to buy and install a new drive when it may not be the problem.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    - Ben
Here's the back story if it's any help; recently upgraded to 10.5, created a base install disk image of all installed and registered apps (in the event that my drive failed). Copied data etc from the previous system over. It ran fine for a few days. This morning I ran time machine for the first time, left the computer for a while, came back and the screen was black (as if it was just displaying black, as opposed to off). Thinking it was just a display issue (which I've seen before), I put the system to sleep (power button, then 's'), woke it up again; still black. So I forced a shut down (wouldn't allow me to do a normal shut down, because dialogue boxes must have been preventing it) and on boot I got the grey screen.

Hi Ben W. I don't have a good answer for you, but based on your information and what you've done, I think I would try starting the machine after disconnecting the harddrive. That requires taking the top off first, for which instructions are on ifixit.com.
I can conjecture that a blown HD is preventing normal operation, perhaps sucking the power down, disrupting the optical drive, etc. This is purely conjecture, but costs you nothing but your time. If this turns out to be the case, I figure the optical drive should start responding again (hold C key during reboot, etc).

  • How can I tell if my motherboard and/or logic board is fried?

Good evening all, I was just wondering if anybody can tell me the way to find out if my old power mac mobo is fried, or weather it's the logic board or the power supply. When I try to boot it up there is no start up chime, there is no white power on light and the red light doesn't even come on. It's one of those bad liquid cooled models but it hasn't leaked. I really don't have the luxury of spending a lot of money just to have someone diagnose the thing for me. I would be willing to replace the power supply for the price that was quoted to me off hand from an apple tech, but the person on the phone wouldn't let me talk to the tech so he wouldn't answer my ? and I despise the genius bar kids who don't seem to know the hard core techie stuff and I tend to talk circles around them. Sorry if there is already a post on this (I searched but came up with nothing) or if this is a dumb or fruitless effort on my part but no clear answers yet found in the magical internet.
Cheers and thanks in advance for your responses!

Can you count the beeps or flashes of the Power Button?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547
Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) computers have six or seven built-in diagnostic LEDs on the main logic board that can help Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) troubleshoot certain issues. These LEDs are located to the left of the top bank of DIMM connectors (where your computer's RAM is installed):

  • Freezing, Panics, and a Logic Board error

Okay, I have a PowerMac G4 Gigabit Ethernet, and it's been crashing, giving me kernal panics, and today, toasted my main hard drive. It's running on:
    1.2GHz Sonnet G4 upgrade
    1.5GB Ram (2x256 and 2x512)
    Radeon 9800 128MB
    2x20GB hard drives RAID striped
    18GB spare
    combo drive
    2x120GB external firewire drives
I can give more details if needed, but basically, if I watch TV resolution video with VLC media player it will crash after 25 minutes or so,if I run the iTunes visualizer for 15 mintues it will crash, if I play World of Warcraft for about 30 minutes it will crash, actually, if I run any graphically intensive game it crashes. Then today I ran the Apple update for the JSE (or whatever) and 10.4.6, then when I rebooted, it gave me a kernal panic, where the first line said something about not having the driver for "Powermac G4 3,3". Then I run Apple hardware test 1.0.1, I ran that 5 times, and the first time, I got the error "scc /3/7" every time after that I got "scc /1/5" all on the logic board, and it wouldn't test pass that. I do have the machine running but since I left my system disc at my parents', I'm booting it from another machine in target disk mode that has 10.3.9 (option-boot saved my butt, kinda). Last but not least, I cannot access my main drive (the 2x20GB RAID), and I'm hoping someone has a way to get to it, but every time I start, it tells me that I've connected a disk that is not recognized my Mac OS. If the drives are gone, I'll have to deal with it, but I can't have my machine freezing on me like this, and any help is much appreciated
Gigabit Ethernet Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Well after 5 tests and every time having the logic board fail I am willing to bet that the logic board IS the probable cause.
What I would do is disconnect all the drives (minus the x2 20gig raid) and get the data off each one. If that other machine you are booting up in targeted disk mode has at least 1 open ATA66 slot free then you can simply change the jumper settings on each drive and get the data off. This will also give you a chance to test and verify each disk.
If the other Mac you are using targeted disk mode on is a laptop then you could go the slower rout of taking turns with making each drive the master drive on the internal ATA66 buss that your machine started with. That way each time you start up with targeted disk mode you can get the data off that drive.
Once all your data is off I would consider the cost for a replacement board (probably $3-500 is my guess) vs the cost of getting a new machine or simply a used newer machine (like a dual 1.2Ghz G4 or something allong those lines). The drives will work in the newer machine so there would be no costs in getting new drives compatible with the system. That is my thoughts.

  • Time machine and bad logic board

I have an iMac G5 with 10.5.8 that I think the logic board is going for the second time. I can boot up in Safe Boot. Can I simply turn off Time Machine and the External HD until I get the iMac G5 diagnosed or replaced. If I get a new iMac, I'll want to use Time Machine to Restore the:

TM makes a full copy of your hard drive. you can restore anything and everything you need from it. you can do a full system restore which will give you the exact copy of your current system or use Migration Assistant which will only copy the things you mentioned.
P.S. TM does work in safe mode.

  • Final Cut Pro and New Logic Board

I just got back my 2.4 ghz IMAC from the Apple Store, where they replaced the logic board. Before this replacement, I was able to capture via firewire into Final Cut. Now the programs stalls when opening the capture window. Can anyone help me try to solve this problem.
    Thanks

well if you decide to do a clean install it goes like this:
Backup all your data, everything will be erased (don't forget bookmarks, pop3 emails, FTP passwords etc) and de-authorize (or whatever they call it) Adobe Creative Suite if you have it.
Boot from the OS dvd (hold down "c" key on startup {or option will work too})
    choose clean install
    Then run software update.
Then install FCS, then run updates for that.
After you get a nice, clean well running system, clone it (search the forum for "clone") with Carbon Copy Cloner, Net Restore, SuperDuper etc. You can then re-image your system in minutes, instead of a few hours.
