Are interactive slideshow menus possible in Aperture?

I am looking for a IPhoto/IDVD replacement for  Mavericks OS. It appears that Aprture might be the software of choice, except that I cannot find any info on the creation of clickable manus as one had in IDVD. If Aperture does not allow this type of creation, what software does?

It's all a bit of a mish-mash at the moment.
DVD was a format for phyiscal distribution of media. But DVDs quality had reached its limits and people started wanting the instant acess of the internet and higher quality of HD.
There is no doubt that's where things are heading, but given all the competition and lack of dominant standards, it does seem like the convenience and ease of DVD (thanks in part to iDVD) has been 'end-of-life'd a bit prematurely.
Apple's approach for a while was Front Row, but then that got killed off too, presumably deciding Apple TV was a better platform it.
If you want to stick with DVDs (or Blu Ray) then there are alternatives to iDVD that are still actively supported, perhaps a question the iDVD forum will help.
But most of the focus now seems on media streaming Apps, for both your local network and internet (receive and broadcast). The trouble is it's still in it's infancy and standards are basic (do a search on DLNA or check out this for a brief introduction: http://www.techradar.com/news/digital-home/home-networking/dlna-what-it-is-and-w hat-you-need-to-know-1079015 ).
The problem is, while DVD was universal, streaming frameworks are not and so currently it's a lot easier to share Apple created content with your Apple owning friends and family than it is with people in a different ecosystem. Before you just had to know if your friends family had a DVD player, now you need to understand their media streaming setup!!
Dispite Apple not participating in DLNA (presumably because it's still much too technical for the layperson and Apple has competing technologies for Apple devices) there are Apps and devices that bridge the gap.
The question is do you want to stick with DVD for now, or make the (inevitable) switch to electronic/streaming distribution. If the latter it's not currently a simple switch from one approach to the other, it's about starting a whole new learning curve.

Since I updated to 6.0, the drop down menus on the web pages I use in Safari on my iphone 4 are no longer working.  The drop down appears and then quickly disappears so that you can't select anything.  Is there a fix?  One example is http://www.scvavolleyball.org/  I need to select Juniors>Girls>Weekend Sites but I can't on my phone....but I used to be able to....and I still can on my ipod touch.  Help.

The current release supports the white-space property for a text area and it is possible that the website uses white-space: pre instead of white-space: pre-wrap.
The former will prevent Firefox from wrapping the text.

  • Is it possible to Aperture Library by copying over the Contents?

    Hi,
My new Drobo 5D is having issues, and i'm not able to copy the Aperture File Directly over directly as its 530GB and the hard drive keeps failing in the last 30GB or so.
so I was wondering is it possible to copy over the contents bit by bit by using the show contents folder and then somehow recreating the Aperture file from the folder of Contents copied over?
Otherwise, is there any other solution?
    thanks!
    Derrick

Read all this before doing anything.
You select the library in the Finder and right click it and do Show Package Contents. That will revel the inside of the library You would then copy the files/folders out to the other drive MAKING SURE you copy them so that they are in the same relation to each other as they are in the original.
On the destination drive create a new empty Aperture library. You'll probably have the easiest time of it if you have two finder windows open, one on the original library and on on the destination. Revel Package contents on both libraries and then copy from the source to the destination replacing the items in the destination library with items from the source. Make sure you go from source (old) to destination (new). It sounds silly to emphasis this but once you start copying it will be easy to get disoriented and go in the wrong direction. Do something to make sure the source Finder window stands out from the destination Finder window.
I wouldn't worry about copying the previews or thumbnails those will be recreated when Aperture opens the new library BUT don't do anything with the Dobro or previews until you are sure the new library opens. In a worst case scenario you could retrieve the previews and still salvage something from your library.
Of course the possibility exists that you will hit the file(s) that are causing the error that is keeping you from doing this in a normal fashion. If so mark the file(s) that are having problems (color label will work well) and continue with the rest of the library. It is possible that the file(s) that won't copy are not of major importance to Aperture and the new library will open anyway. If not then there may be some other way to work around it. By labeling the files you'll at least know what didn;t copy.
That should do it if you're unsure of anything post back before starting.
    good luck
Ps. Read  this post  Re: New iMac, Pegasus & Aperture? from a recent thread on backups and RAID. In it I explain why RAID is not a backup replacement. Once you recover from this you will need to put a true backup procedure in place.
    regards
BTW here is OS X's definiiton of an Error -36
Type -36 error (I/O Errors (bummers)
This file is having difficulty while either reading from the drive or writing to the drive. The file
may have been improperly written data to the drive or the hard drive or disk may be damaged.
This is almost always indicative of a media error (hard error on the disk). Sometimes (rarely) it is transient.
Solutions: Try copying the file to another drive. Use a disk recovery software, such as Disk First Aid to examine the disk. You can try rebooting with all extensions off. Once in a while this will allow you to read the data. The file in question should be restored from a backup that was stored on a different disk. Regular backups can reduce the time to recover from this error.

  • Interactive slideshows

    Hi,
I'm looking to make an interactive slideshow for my website. As a photographer, I would like to be able to have each categorical page of photos be easy to scroll through without clicking a large number of thumbnails.
An example of what I would like to do is any gallery of photos at http://www.lynseyaddario.com/
I want to be able to load all of the photos into a slideshow that viewers can click through or watch a timed slideshow of all the images.
I have most Adobe programs, so if there is a way to do this outside Dreamweaver CS4, I'd be open to it.

The jquery framework seems to be the most popular at the moment when it comes to slideshows and image galleries..
Take a look at the following link and I'm sure you'll find a lot of possibilities:

  • Target Area Interactions????

. Any suggestions on how to bring Authorware 7 projects into
    Capativate 3?
    2. Is there a way of doing Authorware Target Area
Interactions in Captivate 3 whereby objects dragged and dropped
stay only in the target area; otherwise go back?
    3. I also realise that not all desktops support Systems
Audio. My office Optiplex GX520 does. What other desktops support

Use the one in the entry pane. Set NextAvailable to false

    interaction has
    been successfully completed.

  • Why do files from my Nikon D200 camera which are shot at 28MB come into Aperture at only 7MB?

Why do files from my Nikon D200 camera which are shot at 28MB come into Aperture at only 7MB?
I had these images in Large Fine JPG format at 28MB but when imorted and started working with them they are only & MB files in Aperture?

    Léonie,
honestly speaking, I have done most of my image adjustments since 2006 (when I bought the D200) in various image processing applications (e.g. Capture One, Bibble 5 - now turned to AfterShot Pro by Corel, Lightroom at a friend's PC). I also tried Nikon's Capture NX but never liked it. Speaking of images that have been worth while keeping and working with as a RAW file I never saw any difference. As far as I can say with respect to Aperture 3 I come to the the same result as I did with the other software.
People may say that with the disk space being so cheap now it is not worth while thinking about that. But there is one other aspect that can be of advantage in certain situations: The compressed RAWs are transferred faster to and from the the card than the uncompressed files. Also, the time for decompression in applications seems to be shorter than that saved while reading the smaller files.
Before I started to use the compression feature (which in fact should be not lossless in the case of D200) I studied some reviews on that, of course.
Citing one of them one could say
"I tried to make duplicate shots to compare. I gave up. The mechanical exposure repeatability of my camera and nature itself aren't stable enough to let me make two captures close enough to see any possible difference between compressed and uncompressed raw.
People do see differences. They are seeing fluctuations in their technique shot-to-shot, not any differences due to the compression."
    by Ken Rockwell
If you are interested, here is the original article by Ken Rockwell.
Another very elaborate investigation can be found here.
Again, a quote from the controversal discussion on that comparison:
"The ‘lossy’ NEF compression is really a clever use of information theory to save space by eliminating redundant raw levels. The noise which is unavoidably present in light effectively dithers tonal transitions so that the compression is *perceptually lossless*."
    by a poster named emil
As far as I have read elsewhere, newer cameras as the D300 even have really "lossless" compression algorithms.

  • Payroll area change is not possible

    Hi,
When we are doing promotion action, i.e, one paryoll area to another paryoll area, In actions whatever the date we are giving is taking, but when come to org assignment it is not allowing to save with that date  and throwing error " payroll area change is not possible at the end of payroll period"
For example: In Actions start date is 04.01.2010, in org assign is not allowing to save the entry with that date, but if we give 01.01.2010, it is allowing to save the record. As paryroll period is starting of the month to end of the month, that is the reason it allowing the start date of the month in org assign, but user wants the record from his desired date..
Please help me on the issue.

Thanks Larry. That certainly gives me some understanding. Can't imagine I'm the only Aperture user with that concern, so I certainly hope Adobe and others will fill the void. Without that feature, Photos is pretty much a non-started for me.

  • Panasonic DMC-FZ30 Raw files ARE supported by others and not Aperture

I guess the question is "WHEN" will Aperture support FZ30 raw files? Lightroom has certainly beaten Aperture in that regard. I would suggest that Aperture work on supporting more camera raw files...as judged by the number of others that show up on these boards, and of course SPEED.
Other than those two issues...which are huge...I love Aperture.

  • How are edited iPhoto pictures represented in Aperture?

    Hi all,
I'm a relatively new Aperture user, and apologize in advance if the answer to my question is common knowledge.  (I did my homework first, but perhaps didn't search on the right keywords.)  I imported a few thousand pictures from iPhoto to Aperture, and had Aperture copy them into its library instead of referencing them from iPhoto's library.  For most of these imported photos, Aperture now shows me stacks containing the "iPhoto Original" and "iPhoto Edited" pictures -- even in cases where the "edit" is as trivial as automatically rotating a picture that the camera flagged as being in portrait instead of landscape.  No worries so far.
I assumed that the "iPhoto Original" was treated as an Aperture master image, and any "iPhoto Edited" copies were stored as versions in Aperture.  I just had Aperture relocate the masters from this project though, and was quite surprised to see files being written to disk for both the "iPhoto Original" and "iPhoto Edited" pictures.  The sizes of the files were roughly the same, which makes me think that my understanding must have been flawed.  Is it the case that Aperture treats "iPhoto Edited" photos as separate masters?  If so, does that mean that if I make additional edits in Aperture to an "iPhoto Edited" JPEG, Aperture will end up generating a third-generation JPEG to represent the result?  (The "iPhoto Original" being the first-generation JPEG, the "iPhoto Edited" version being a copy of that JPEG, and my Aperture-created version being a copy of a copy of the original JPEG.)
I'd appreciate it if someone could let me know how things actually work under the hood.
    Thanks,
    Brad

It's frustrating to learn that Aperture didn't import the edited iPhoto images as versions!
    Hello Brad,
I know, I wasn't happy with that either, but Aperture has no chance do that with older iPhoto libraries, short of reverse engineering. The older iPhoto versions simply did not store the edits in a non-destructive format like Aperture, just version and original pairs, and that is what Aperture will import. It's only the recent iPhoto versions that make it possible for Aperture to create master-version pairs.
When I imported my iPhoto Libraries I deleted the extra master files - depending on the edits I had done, I either kept the original or the edited version and made a backup of the iPhoto library, just in case I ever would need the second version. If you really want to invest into a newer version of iPhoto and import again, you could try to use the "Lift and Stamp tool" to copy the metadata tags you already applied to the images that you reimport to Aperture.
    Regards
    Léonie

  • Interactive Slideshow to DVD?

Is there any way to take my Quicktime interactive slideshow made by Keynote 2 and burn it to DVD so I can control the Keynote with the DVD player remote?
I would just like to give a Keynote through the dvd player, but so I am controlling it and it is not just a movie playing.
    Thank You in Advance!

nope, iDVD doesn't support chapter stops. The only way it would work is if you build long pauses in your slides between each build and hit the pause button on your remote every time you want to STOP the action. That would get old pretty darn fast.
Or you could wait for Keynote 3 and pray Apple sees fit to give us instant DVD publishing from Keynote. No idea if that'll ever happen though.

  • Are the books any better in Aperture vs iPhoto?

Are the books any better in Aperture vs iPhoto?  Is it worth getting Aperture or is it a glorified version of iPhoto?

Do you know if the images are printed right on the cover of the book or if it is just a sleeve?
    Look at this page:

It is printed on the cover and the sleeve.

  • Externally edited Photoshop files are huge when saved back into Aperture 3

I start with an 8MB JPEG photo. I externally edit it in Photoshop Elements 6, and hit "Save". The edited image is saved back into Aperture, but it's now 34MB PSD. Ouch! My hard disk is big but this is over the top. The intent of me moving to Aperture from iPhoto had been to reduce file sizes (masters and versions), not to hugely increase them.
If I use "Save As" and convert it to a JPEG, the saved edited photo vanishes--it isn't in Aperture. I can't find it. If it is saved in some unknown location it is taking up hard disk space uselessly.
Can you help me do this better? I would be most grateful.

Yup. That is how big such files are when not compressed and image data has not been discarded.
It's an Aperture vs. iPhoto thing: When I did Photoshop External Editing in iPhoto (before I switched to Aperture) the original JPEG stays a JPEG when exported to Photoshop. The file size problem does not occur in iPhoto.
That is correct, and is why few if any pros use iPhoto. iPhoto is by definition +low end,+ dumping image files into lossy JPEG by default. A RAW file imported into iPhoto is saved in JPEG unless the user takes special action to export it as TIFF or PSD.
Aperture won't allow it--it seems to insist on converting to PSD for external editing.
Also correct. Aperture is a professional app, and intentionally and repeatedly discarding image data would not be professional workflow.
My JPEG's are top-notch low-compression ones, using the least compression settings in my Olympus micro-4/3 camera (super fine, large image, with 1/2.7 compression). JPEG artefacts have not been an issue even after extensive Photoshop editing.
Agreed, top quality JPEGs can be very useful even though image information has been discarded. Back when RAW DSLR capture was unusably slow I shot many full-page magazine ads using JPEG Fine. But once the (fast) Nikon D2x came out I have always captured RAW and would no way ever again consider far inferior JPEG-only capture.
Perhaps Aperture is not for me, if we can't overcome this issue.
Perhaps. However IMO a far better approach is to shoot RAW and embrace a professional lossless workflow using Aperture. Mass storage is cheap and the benefits of RAW capture are very significant.
Already my Aperture Library is 70GB and I have barely started with it.
The issue of huge Library is due to using a Managed-Masters Library. Switch to RAW capture and a Referenced-Masters Library with the Library on an internal drive and the Masters referenced on external drives and the Library will no longer grow ridiculously large. IMO discarding image data via JPEG compression just to save hard drive space is inappropriate in 2011.

  • Export Issue - QT Interactive Slideshow - Same Problem for Years

Come Apple... give us some real tech support for your software... like Keynote (Live support is equipment centric).
I had this same issue over a year ago, reported it... and latest upgrade doesn't fix.

    - When played in browser... it loops at start, no matter if [first slide] is set to Manual ("On Click") or "Automatically After Transition". No matter if "local", or from my web host.
    - Happens SPORADICALLY... Yes... some files work, most don't. Also, different behavior in different browsers (Safari, Firefox). Who knows what's going on with 92% of the rest of the world (i.e., Explorer).
Anyone here have any suggestions... Steve Jobs email address?

Follow the below mentioned settings and check.
