Are iPhones sold at the apple store unlocked?

I want to buy a iPhone 5 from the apple retail store (not the online store) but I don't know if they're unlocked or not since I have never bought one in store. I need to know ASAP. I live in Canada & the iPhones being sold on the website are unlocked so that's why I'm questioning this. I have also looked on google and couldn't find a straight anwser for this. And do I also have to set up a plan at the store when I buy it or can I just buy the phone? I'm not the one going to buy the phone (a friend is for me) & I was just going to get it activitated when I get the phone.

Yeah just tested it, change the tmobile to iPhone tarrif and it's unlocked. So Peter was right it is unlocked if you buy from the Apple store. Plus I thought it would be unlocked just needed conformation, like I said the sales guy said it is unlocked to all networks.

As Ethmoid says, it is still a CDMA phone as I told you earlier, and it will not work with t-mobile. Even if Sprint unlocked the phone, it would only unlock the GSM side for international use. They will not unlock the GSM side for domestic use in the US.

If T-Mobile in the US, while your phone will activate/work, you won't have FaceTime, MMS or 3G. T-Mobile, in the US, is not a supported iPhone carrier, thus all features of the iPhone may not be available. T-Mobile's 3G network, in the US, is not compatible with the iPhone.

Based on this issue, I have contacted Rogers. The procedure was very time consuming as I spent over 4 hours on the phone with multiple service reps, supervisors, and managers. This has cost me over $40 in long distance charges just for this phone call. In addition, they made me aware that I was sold an iPhone 4s that was locked to Rogers. Rogers charged me $57 for this unlock, and they said they could not waive this fee because it goes through apple. The typical procedure when apple sells locked phones, is that a replacement phone would be given to me free of charge by apple. I just do not understand why the service rep told me that the phone was unlocked, when actually the supervisor at Rogers confirmed that this device was originally locked to Rogers (traced from imei). I deserve compensation, and would like to hear a prompt response from apple with regards to this matter.

Only the provider can unlock the phone and pass the unlock info to Apple. This info will be added to a database and you'll be able to use another SIM when you connect to iTunes after you have been notified that the phone is now unlocked.

I have taken it back to the Apple store genius bar, but they say they don't see anything wrong. Well unless you use it all day and experience the problems when they happen, you wont see anything wrong. But there are lots wrong with it. But this would be the same store as I purchased the phone. I have tried the new SIM card with other phones and it is okay. Originally I was with Vodafone and have recently moved to GiffGaff as I reached the end of my contract. especially back in iPhone 4 days
If you purchased fron an Apple Retail store ( Apple owned) and paid
full price it should be unlocked as your Apple receipt should show
If not , it is locked but (if in UK ) Vodafone do offer unlocking .
Do a deep search of their site and you will find guidance not easy to find
