Are iPod 40GB's buggy?

Hi,
Does anyone elses iPod 40GB crash all the time? Mine has gone down three times in less than a year. I have to bring it in, deal with the hassle and exchange it...am I the only one with this problem?

Is it the 3rd gen with the touch wheel? (4 buttons on top) If it is, mine was horrible. I had to replace it 4 times. The first 3 because it would connect to the computer once through firewire, and every single time after that, the computer would not recognize it. It would work through USB, though. The last time I can't really remember what problem was going on. If there's an Apple store near, it's so much easier than shipping the iPod in. For me they jus replaced the iPod within about 20 minutes.
But now I'm happy. It finally works!!

Have you checked to see whether it's in the Music app on the device ? When you have audiobooks on an iOS device you will get an Audiobooks option under the More button at the bottom of the Music app.
Note that audiobooks are currently a one-time only download from the store (so they won't appear in the Purchased tab for re-downloading), so you may want to copy it to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases so that you can take a backup copy of it - it should copy over to the Books part of your iTunes library.

Do iPod 40GBs with dock connector support VBR?

I have an iPod 40GB, 3rd generation with dock connector (all white wheel). I also use iTunes for Windows. I have been using import settings of AAC 192 kbps (constant bitrate encoding implied) for many years. Does anyone know if the iPod 40GB 3G will support VBR encoding?

Keep in mind that I am using it with the newer models of that model. (Mine had an iPod nano compatible sticker on it and came with a remote). I would imagine that it works fine with the older model of that one as well.

IPod touch rather buggy on iOS 8.p

I have an iPod touch and it's rather buggy on iOS 8, particularly the music app and is slightly slower now, I was wondering if iOS 8.1 will fix all these bugs, although they are small, together the decrease the overall experience. This iOS update does not seem to have gone through the rigorous testing others have.

Since iOS 8 does more all the time iths is new multitasking I would expect some slowdown especially with the older 5G iPod (as compared with the iPhone 6).
Ios 8.1 may improve the performance.
Sometimes this helps:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Sync Podcasts in ipod 40gb

Hi everyone...
I have a 40gb ipod and able to transfer my music and photo to my ipod with no problem. BUT sync podcasts do not work.
i have tried different options in ITUNES 7.2 such as:
All, all new ....,
tried manually transfer,
Also right click on the podcasts (under library)in itunes selected "convert selection for ipod".
i can not drag and drop to my ipod too.
There is something missing...???!!
i was wondering any one has an idea??

This may be your problem. You can play podcasts in your library as manual files that you drag and drop.
But they will only automatically update if you select the podcast in the itunes store and subscribe there.
You set the options and download frequency in the Podcasts icon below TV shows.

I was given and Ipod 40gb and am having trouble syncronizing it with my itunes.

So recently I was given an old white 40gb Ipod, after charging it I hooked it to my computer and tried to sync it with my Itunes. So it sync's and ask me if I want some 'Colbert Report...something, something', I don't remember the tittle of it, and I say no. Then it say's "Updating Teresa's Ipod" and freezes. I can use my pc but I cant do anything to my Itunes. I tried restarting it and redoing the whole process but nothing happens. HELP!!!! (TnT)

Have you synced any content to it and/or backed it up? If so, put your iPhone in recovery mode. (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=367) Then you can re sync your content or restore from backup.

HELP - Sad face! used iPod 40GB from ebay

I'm a newbie with no clue! I bought this ipod for a Christmas present on ebay. It did not come with software... I'm freaked because when I turn it on I get the sad face. And I have no idea where to start debugging this.
Are either of these the right software for this ipod?

As Apple says in the following link, it most likely is a hardware issue and needs repair. If you can get it into disk mode or do a restore, than it's fine. Try connecting it to iTunes, then click on your iPod in the left pane, then in the summary tab click restore.

HT1386 where are ipod notes saved on my macbook?

I want to edit a note I made in Notes on my ipod touch but I can't find where they are after syncing to my macbook.

If you are using OSX 10.8, they should be in the notes application. switching accounts might help.

Are ipods cross-platform?

I am thinking of buying my first classic ipod, I have a IMac as pictured. Most of my tracks and CD imports and favourite video/films are on it. However I can only get dial up at home, my laptop is windows, and a local hotspot would enable me to download the odd audio book with all the audio features which CD imports lack. Is it possible to plug in an ipod to both windows and Mac iTunes and add content via both itunes platforms on the two computers? It looks as if windows people have trouble.....?

Windows computers will only recognize iPods formatted for Windows. Macs, however, will recognize iPods formatted for either Windows or Macs. So, theoretically, you could format the iPod for Windows (using iTunes, restore it on a Windows computer), set it to manually manage your music and then you could use it on both computers. You would only be able to do software updates from the Windows computer, however. It's doable.
Keep in mind, you'd have to authorize a public computer to use your iTunes account. This could be problematic. Even if you consider using a public computer, you might just want to invest in a USB "thumb" drive. Relatively large ones (2gigs) can be had for less then $30 USD. You could transfer things to the drive and then put them on you computer, thus eliminating the need to ever plug your iPod into the Windows machine.

IPod 40GB corrupt and unreadable error

I just got my iPod 40 GB serviced from HP, but when I got it back and I connected it to my iTunes, the iPod seemed to be loading fine, but I recieved an error on the iTunes screeen like this:
The file or directory iPodControl/Music/F06/07______mp3 is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chdsk utility.
What does that mean and what can I do to fix it?

Disk dump (dd) my ipod (40GB) with FW takes days...

Somehow the filesystem on my ipod got broken. Because i use it also as an external HDD there is some data on it - which i need to recover (where's my backup;-)
DriveGenius&TechTools: no Chance to repair.
Started "Data Rescue" an it says ... ~24 days for a full scan
Now i try to dump the whole pod with diskdump out of the terminal:
Started it at 15:17 and after 5 ! hours just received 150 MB.
The start was quite fast, but afterwards it got slower and slower.
Working on iBook G4 - 10.4.2
40GB ipod - MAC formated
tried both Firewire and USB -> no change
killed allready any mdimport
Any ideas?

I have the same problem and can't seem to figure out what the problem is. I rebuilt my iTunes library and still my 6G nano crahes whenever I load an AAC tune onto it. MP3s and podcasts all work fine, it's just the AACs...
Just *loading* an AAC song will cause the Nano 6G to reboot as soon as it disconnects from Itunes. It will then reboot a few times and then go into recovery mode. :-(

Why are Ipod Apps better than Iphone Apps?

There are some really nice apps available to the ipod touch that aren't available to the Iphone. Go search Ipod apps in the Itunes store and you will see what I am talking about. How come the same apps aren't available for both devices?

oops, they are not on the touch they are for the nano, and reg ipod. Still I am sure there is a way to develope them for the iphone.

IPod 40GB SEIZED UP!!!

hi there-
i'm driving in my car listening to the iPod, one song finishes and the next song on the album doesn't begin. I look at the iPod and the next song is queued up but not playing. i move the Hold button to the right to "unlock" it, but the padlock icon remains in the display telling me it is still locked.
here's what i've tried to fix it:
1. i plugged it into the AC adapter and tried to hold the Menu and Select buttons for 10 seconds to get the Apple logo to appear and perform the reboot. No Dice!
2. i try to run the Updater but neither the Update or Restore buttons are viable. they are greyed out. No dice!
3. i try to plug the iPod into the dock to get it to launch iTunes. No dice!
4. i launch iTunes then plug in iPod to get iTunes to recognize it... No dice!
5. I try following otto's directions for using the Drive Manager but the computer doesn't recognize iPod as a drive. you guessed it... no DICE!!!
anyone?? Buehler??? anybody know what i need to do next? as of right now it's a rather expensive paper weight....

That's strange, I developed the exact same problem yesterday while listening to a song, my iPod continues to be stuck half way though it. I tried pluging it into the AC Adapter, the computer, the standard reset thing where you hold down menu and play/pause... nothing worked. I guess maybe it's gonna have to go into be repaired, I'm trying to see if i can get the battery to drain down, but since it's not doing anything that's gonna take a while.
