Are MacBook Pro & white MacBook logic boards interchangeable

I have a MacBook pro 13" 2.4GHz 2010 model that needs a new logic board. I'm wondering if they use the same logic board (motherboard) as the polycarbonate MacBook 2.4GHz from 2010 & could I use it in my MBP?

    The wegenermedia reference relates to some earlier positive results others mentioned some years
    ago, and due to that, I sent an iBook computer to them, in a padded box (over-engineered) that I
    made, for diagnostic repair service, and it returned with stickers over the screws that said their
    warranty would be void if the tape were damaged or removed. I felt sure enough of their work that
    I later sold the computer to an 80+ y/o some miles from where I lived, and chose to give him free
    support for two years. That means since he never had used a computer, and saw an ad I put on
    a bulletin board in that town and chose to reply to it, I even went as far as helping set up printers
    and other things he had never done, at no additional profit to me. The iBook was a complete kit
    and included original box, plus later OS X and extras, at below other location retail.
    I've been in contact with them about two other computers I have, one is an aluminum PowerBookG4
    and the other a MacBook1.1 13-inch 1.83GHz first-model, each has issues. The MB1.1 is better, &
    it only needs some parts to fix two issues, but it runs well. An occasional winking display, that does
    best if left sitting with lid open; and by use of iStat Pro, I see odd information from the CPU temps on
    one of the two cores in the processor. Sometimes, it says the core is sub-zero °F, other times hotter
    than the other one. And also, it may disappear from the reporting to iStat altogether. So that may be
    as simple as a need for new thermal paste if the CPU could be so doctored. They will inspect and
    test an item before a firm cost estimate is arrived at. They've also workstations to repair logic boards.
    So I'd be willing to bundle up my early MacBook1.1 1.83GHz and send it off for a $200 service, since
    once it is opened most issues can be dealt with on the spot, and it would be returned with warranty.
    Since my example is a clean one, it may be worth that service. It has 10.5.8; could run 10.6.8 OK.
    Anyway, the discussion is a bit afield from the OP topic, except there are experts who can repair an
    original logic board; some prefer to see and test the entire machine. Others may swap out the board
    for one they've already serviced if available, for turnaround-time sake. They offer older refurbs, too.
    Between the sales model number and processor version it should be easier to locate a replacement
    for the original post's questionable part issue. Some devices had additional part numbers that may
    work, depending on the length of product run and changes in manufacture over the duration.
    {Seems to me you'd gone from using Macs awhile, to PC, and were in state of ID awhile, btw.

  • Are logic boards interchangeable - such as the 3 early 2005 power mac  comp

    Hello all,
    I have another question similar to the one about whether or not different cases can be interchanged.
    My "new" question is this:
    Are the 3 "early 2005" Power Mac logic boards interchangeable? In other words, could one use a dual 2.0 or 2.3 or 2.7 ghz logic board in any of these models
    or is each logic board specific to the speed of the processor? Or can the quad 4 2.5 ghz logic board be substituted into a dual 2.7 ghz case?
    When you answer, could you please try to answer in simple terms.

    Hi, sorry for the bump. I am looking to get a new logic board for my G5. I've been looking around eBay and some info you said contradicts the descriptions of some items, namely:

    The 820-1760-A only has 4 ram slots, and by what Steve said, can only be compatible with the 2.0 ghz processors. The second listing has a model number of 820-1592-A, which the seller claims is compatible with 2.0+ ghz processors.
    So which one of you is right? I'm looking to replace my June 2004 board which has the same model number as the second listing, but am not sure if that listing is an Early 2005 model or not...

  • Is it worth trying to get my MacBook Logic board fixed?

    I have a late 2008 MacBook unibody, 2GHZ, A1278, suddenly about 2 weeks ago, it just crashed and died (after over 4 years of beautiful service)
    When I hit the power button, I can hear the HD power up, but then power down again about 5 seconds later
    I brought it to CompuB (Apple authorised workshop in Ireland), and the guy said the logic board was gone!! he wasnt any more specific about what happened, just that it would cost around €1000 to replace.
    the visit to CompuB cost me €69
    I've seen/read that some places can repair Logic Boards! has anyone any experience of this, would it be worth taking a punt? I dont want to fork out another €50-€100 just for some guy to tell me it's totally fried!
    I've since upgraded to a new 21" iMac, so it's not essential the MacBook is fixed, but if I thought I could spend €200-€300 and get it working again, I'd go for it, as I really loved it!!

    The OS is/was actually Snow Leopard (I think 10.5.8 was Tiger, I had updated to 10.6 a few years back)(my mistake for not saying this),
    I had also upgraded the RAM about 6 months ago from 2GB to 8GB, and gained a massive performance improvement - could this have been a factor in the Logic Board's demise?
    The iMac 21" will now be my primary mac, however it's a late 2012 model, so the RAM can't be upgraded (unlike the 27") (at least that's what Apple told me when buying it) (a decision I will probably rue in the future)
    I've also got a 2TB TC for back up, and I have loads of external HD's for storage( 2x 1TB, 1x 2TB, 1x 320gb).
    I've also just yesterday purchased a Mac Mini, to use an an entertainment system in the front room (I have a spare wireless mouse/keyboard now, so it would be a shame to not utilise them).
    So, if the macbook was fixed, it would probably see little use, but would still be used from time to time!
    as you mentioned, a connection is formed with a mac (sounds silly, I know, but it just is), and the thought of never seeing her light up again is an awful thought.
    I'll hang back for a while, and see how I get on, I got a quote from a place that say they regularly repair macbook logic boards of €250 to repair it, so I'll see how I get on, and if I happen to have a spare few €€€'s in my wallet some week, I might drop it in to them.

  • Macbook Pro Mid-2012 Logic Board replacement, Apple Dragging feet?

    First some background:
    I have a macbook pro 13" Mid-2012 non retina covered under applecare until Jan. 2016. Starting in late march, i had noticed some performance issues but never took it in as the issue would subside within a day or two. Going into the final two week of my college semester, the macbook started freezing and tacking almost 5 minutes to boot. Suddenly it would take 5 tries just to get it to boot. due to this, i had been unable to get the time machine backup to work as it would freeze for 12 hours on average.
    So thenI took my macbook pro into the local authorized apple service center (on April 29th) as i suddenly got 'open error 5: input output error' errors and my mbp wouldnt boot at all. When i spoke to the servicer, he and I agreed that at minimum the hard drive was failing. The servicer made a time machine backup of the data on the hdd and got the backup on my external drive. He asked to keep the external drive as it has a partition that is a USB install disk of the latest Mavericks. Soon after he got the data backed up, the hard drive showed signs of failure to happen soon. So we agreedto have him replace the hdd. He hoped to have my macbook to me by May 5th. Well on May 5th, i got a call from him that with the replacement hard drive, the computer still had similar issues and was able to track it down to logic board issues. We agreed that since he had the macbook pro already and since it was applecare covered, we should go ahead and replace the logic board. Anyways, he ordered a new logic board from apple last monday (May 5th, 2014). I called on Thursday for an update and the servicer was frustrated with Apple that something is going on and he hasnt received the part as Apple usually gets him these parts within 1-2 days of request.He said he will call me once Apple gets him the part as he will get on the repair once the part comes in.  He hasnt called me back yet.
    This is rather frustrating for me as my macbook had all my college files on it and this problem happened right before college finals (i technically lost about 2 months worth of web design files and class files) where much of what needed for finals was on that computer. if he could have gotten it back by the 7th as he'd hoped, i would have been fine.  Instead, i was forced to go back to my PC laptop and try recreating some of the files that were made by mac only applications into something similar on windows. i was unable to recover the web design files as they were on the macbook and i couldnt remember right off which folder it was in. So i had to scrape together things to be able to submit for my finals so i wouldnt totally bomb the course. My web design instructor understood how frustrated I got from losing all that work and having to settle for a final design that just met the requirments rather than the one on the mac that was well past it.
    He is not sure whats going on as the last time he ordered a logic board for the same model, he had it by the end of business the next day. He is apoligizing for everything . I am not frustrated with him, rather I am frustrated with Apple as they had recommended me to take it in ASAP, yet they are seemingly dragging thier feet on getting him the parts.
    On top of this, I am helping a neighbor modernize her business website, and am doing a project with the state unemployement office to help them redo thier videos. Both of these are things i would always use my mac for as it is like 5x faster than my pc on this stuff. It's more than just an inconvience now. I need my mac badly as the PC is just not fast enough to do what i need in the itme i am given (which i why i switched to mac as my primary computer).
    Is this common for Apple when it comes to logic board replacements for macbook pros or what?
    Has anyone else had this issue?

    Applecare was no help at all. I called and did the complaint. They confirmed that it is registered to me and everything but essetially told me that they cant give me answers as to what is taking so long. They knew a repair was in progress but wanted to set me up with an appointment at an apple store? (the nearest Apple retail store is Billings which is 240 miles away, or about 4 hours). i tell them its at the repair place and they go on to tell me they can send me a box to mail it in and have it reapir by them.. They are trying to shift the blame to the AASP and his rep. But he said he has been trying with very few answers from Apple as well

    Hi I'm planning on giving my MacBook Pro to Apple to replace the logic board but I have run into a issue Apple are saying they won't give me the old logic board back witch is a bit stupid if my Mac's out of warranty then the logic board belongs to me as I'm paying for the new logic board to be replaced so my question is how do I get Apple to give me my old logic board ?     That is their normal way of handling things: they keep the part they replace.
    Now, if it's out of warranty and you're paying for it, I'd try to explain that part. However.... why is it that you want the logic board? If it's fried, it's no longer of any use, so why do you want it? It's not like the hard drive where you have your files stored.
    As a sidenote: make sure they flash the new logic board with your serial number; otherwise your computer will suddenly not have one. That involves a special tool they insert into a USB port and it goes directly to some apple site where that board is then registered with your serial number.

  • Macbook Pro 13" 2011 Logic Board Troubleshooting

    I have two 13" Macbook Pros, both with the same issue. They are both i5 (2.3 or 2.4 GHz models), 4 GB RAM, Mid-2011 models. Both of them have also been dropped. I believe they have problems with the logic board. When I try to turn it on, nothing happens. The battery does charge I believe, as the battery reports fully charged with the battery button and the MagSafe connector is green when plugged in. When attempting to power on battery alone, nothing happens at all (no lights, no movement, no noises). As soon as I plug the MagSafe adapter in (without pressing the power button), I get a very faint 'ticking' noise, which I have deduced to be the fan's motor VERY slightly receiving power (as if you put your hand on the center of the fan's 'blade' assembly, you can feel the motor very very slightly 'push'/pulse, but not enough to even move it; about 1 second between pulses. I have tried:
    -Powering on with no adapter, but battery
    -Powering on with magsafe adapter
    -Powering on with no battery but magsafe adapter
    -Resetting SMC
    -'Bypassing' SMC with 'Hold power then connect Magsafe' method
    -Jump starting it (with the two pads)
    -Reading the voltage from the pads used to jump start, 3.4-something volts DC (seems correct).
    -Powering on with no RAM (had no different effect)
    -Jump-starting with keyboard disconnected from board
    Any other ideas where to go with testing from here? I just find it odd to find two that have the exact same (specific-seeming) symptom, from the same sort of damage, with no idea what's wrong. Could it be a fuse, possibly, blown by a short with the case from the fall (even if momentary)? If you have any suggestions for fuses to test or if this seems correct, please suggest them.
    To be clear, I am entirely comfortable with removing any/every component in the laptop, if needed, and can work a multimeter and various other diagnostic tools (if I have them). I'm just not too familiar with this particular model's layout and could use some assistance from a more experience tech in regards to Apple products.

I have been using their vast collection of knowledge, and I do believe I've already gone further with this than the information they have/general knowledge floating around the web will take me. I have checked, and I do have power across G3Hot (the 'Jump Start' pads), 3.47v DC, so I am not willing to accept this as a dead board yet. Next is to check MOSFETs and SMD capacitors I think, see if we've got anything toasted there. I did check every fuse I can find on the board. I also picked up some schematics from 'around' for this board, clearly looks enthusiast-made, but still better than nothing; one should think.

    last weekend my early 2011 MacBook pro 17" logic board got toasted. I went to the apple store today and they said they can replace it for almost 500 bucks with an identical board, this got me thinking. since they discontinued the 17" units I guess there shouldn't be that much newer MacBook Pro logic boards, but I think the last 17" was released in 2012. which I would assume used a newer logic board than my original early 2011 piece. so I was wondering if it was possible to put/fit the 2012 or well basically a newer version of the 17" logic board into my MacBook Pro. Since I already left the store I figured I'd ask here. They won't get started on my MacBook Pro anyways.

    So exactly a month later, as you might recall I got a new logic board into my old MacBook Pro... all was good until today... 8 hours ago, I started getting the same error as before, my screen started flickering, even though I hadn't been working on the macbook for more than 2 hours. Then my screen split somewhat around the middle and everything that was supposed to be left was right, everything that was right was left, I could literally move my mouse to the edge of the right side of my screen and it would continue on the left side. Only 3 applications running were: Finder, little snitch, photoshop cs6... and I was actually working on a fairly big photoshop file, but still my macbook wasn't even hot on the outside yet, and it actually heats up fast.
    so what am I looking at here? Is this apple's way of telling me, I can not own a MacBook Pro for more than 3 years... and that no repair in the world will work for me, but that I actually have to trash my beloved 17" MacBook Pro and get a new smaller MacBook Pro which I can not possibly afford right now, especially after spending 500€ to replace the logic board just a month ago?
    when I restart the MacBook Pro it seems even worse than before, I don't just get the white screen with the apple logo that I can not get past, I actually get the white screen apple logo with error stripes running through from top to bottom throughout the entire screen.
    which is insane, I am a huge apple fan, I've owned every iPhone that ever came out, but this is such a huge disappointment. I mean a logic board lasting 1 month, just sounds insane.

  • MacBook Pro HDD and logic board connection

    Hi! Recently my 1.5 year old MacBook Pro hanged while I was watching a movie. So I had to force shutdown the machine. On restarting, I was routed to "System Utilities" and I observed that there was some issue with the hard drive. I could not repair the hard drive myself with the disk utilities system. And therefore,I took it to the Apple service center wherein on preliminary diagnosis they said that hard drive is gone. A day later they say that the connection between the hard drive and the logic board is gone and so I need to replace the hard drive and the logic board as well (cost of which is equivalent to a new non-apple notebook). I read several discussions on "apple forums" and learnt that there is a cable connection between the hard drive and the logic board. But the service guy says that there is some other "socket connection" which is gone while the cable is all fine. I am not able to understand if there are two types of connection between the hdd and the logic board. I have not come across similar problem with anyone and somehow I feel that this service guy cannot help Me. I also fail to understand that how can one access the disk utility system if the logic board (or the heart of the laptop) is gone!!!!! The notebook was always very carefully handled with no jerk and or spillage issue. It has always worked perfectly fine with the software updated to the latest available. Please help!!

    To test if it is the connection, one can connect a known functional boot drive externally via USB and if it boots the MBP, then there is an internal connection problem.  There are differences in how the SSD is mounted in a retina MBP.  Look at these videos:

    If you have the 13" MBP, it indicates that the mounting and connection assembly may have to be replaced.  If it is a 15" MBP, it indicates that the logic board may have to be replaced.

  • Would I be able to boot from USB on my Macbook Pro if my logic board was damaged?

    My macbook pro recently started to slow down, programs freeze, etc. Odd behavior. So I decided to install a clean version of os. My hard drive came up as corrupt, I need to repair. So I did that. And was unable to install to os. It starts up and then says that the installation has failed, but yet I'm able to install it on an external hd and boot from that installation. Is it my hard drive? Or is something wrong my logic board?

    If you can successfully boot and run OSX from the external harddisk but not from the internal harddisk, then it is most likely that your internal harddisk is defect and not the logic board.
    Nonetheless you should run the Apple Hardware Test Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test to check your Mac.
    It might be that the internal SATA-harddisk connection is defect.

    If you have tried a variety of devices on both USB ports, and they all work on one and not on the other then the best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free regardless of warranty status.

  • Macbook logic boards are expensive!!

    yesterday I dropped my macbook off to have the headphone jack fixed, they ended having to replace the logic board to fix it, today I got it back and luckily it was under warranty cause holy crap it would have been $890.63!!
    if I didn't have the warranty I would have just bought a new macbook for $300 more or a 23" display. I'm suprised thats what it took to replace the headphone jack, rather than just soldering on a new one.

    Crazy isn't it? That's just the nature of replacement parts though. I remember seeing something a while ago talking about the same thing relating to the auto industry.
    It would cost like 10X as much to buy a car with replacement parts than the car costs new.
    I'm thinking I saw someone here saying the screen for these things is $1200! That's just insane.

  • MacBook pro early 2011 logic board failure, return.

    I bought a MBP15" 2011 earlier in the summer, I have had mac,s for decades but this exception has been unreliable and a burden costing me time and money when you say professional this assumes a certain standard, build quality and most of all reliability, I find this misleading.
    I installed all the updates kept it clean away from any heat source as it runs so hot you don,t need a radiator and taken it to an authorized dealer until a few months ago it started slipping away then it went from bad to worse from intermittent glitches at startup to the gray screen. Then not even a complete HD format/re-install did not affect the problems.
    Went to Apple Store, Regent Street for the third second time unable to book online being told I had to return it where I bought it I normally go to Covent Garden its quieter they know me their the last few months have been very frustrating, audio fault, video fault and finally the it went crazy writing text, keyboard failure, audio and display completely unusable again.
    After asking to see a manager I was directed upstairs where I was stood in a cue finally being told to sit on a bench two hours later I tried to get attention of an assistant after being ignored although cueing again for another half an hour I was told he was by the stairs I walked over to that direction asking another assistant what was happening I had been their for a few hours now and i was determined this time to return this faulty machine.
    Finally I saw an assistant at the genius bar who asked me questions I told him I wanted to return the machine I had on going issues it was unusable I had important software from the RNIB on the machine which I would have to replace I needed it daily and needed it for work work finally he took the machine said the logic board was faulty and the keyboard, noted it had obviously been looked after mentioned people often drop them i assume he meant children who had not paid nearly two grand and gave me receipt for it then went away returned apologizing they had none in stock and it could be days mabye a week he was polite.
    Although I was happy to leave and the chance of getting a reliable machine that works was a major relief, until I got home the very very small writing on the receipt was read to me it said replace the logic board, keyboard no labor charge I am amazed i will have to pay for Applecare in another few months its like bribery not insurance its not as if its a faulty charger the machine itself that is unreliable and broken I cant work without It i,m blind.

    No one here can do anything to help you — you need to deal with the manager of the store. We are all just other Mac users here. Apple does not respond to posts in these forums, and does not read most of them.
    I suggest that if you write anything to the store manager or post again here in the future, you try to write in sentences, using appropriate punctuation. Your stream-of-consciousness tome here is quite hard to decipher.
