Are multiple graphics cards without multiple monitors helpful?

I have a Mac Pro with two graphics cards in it, but only one monitor. (I was/am considering getting some more monitors but haven't done so yet. The monitor is hooked up to the more powerful graphics card.) I was just wondering if, in theory or practice, there's any benefit to having a graphics card in the Mac without a monitor hooked up to it? OpenCL should mean that the Mac is able to take advantage of the processing and VRAM capacity of the card even if it's not generating pixels to be output, right? Maybe I just answered my own question.

There can be if you have a GTX 680 for CUDA and use an AMD card for monitors IF the program or plugins are written to do so. normally, no.

After removing the graphics card to have a look at it, due to a suspected graphics problem, my imac 2008 20" wont now start. There is no chime, no display but the fans run, starting off slowly then when turned off by the power button and then turned back on with power button held in, the speed of the fans ramps right up. Any ideas?

  • Passive graphics card for 2-monitor setup

I am looking for a graphics card for use with 2 monitors in a dual monitor configuration that has:
    Passive cooling
    1 x DVI port
    1 x DisplayPort
I'm aware that CS6 can  make use of some of the more advanced graphics card features, such as Open CL, but I don't understand the technicalities of this, nor what this implies when choosing a card.  I will not be doing any video-editing, video playback or gaming.
    My questions are:
Would a card such as the Sapphire Radeon HD 6670 Ultimate provide full support for CS6, without being overkill? (http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1088&pid=1240&psn=&lid= 1&leg=0)  -  I thought that the "low active power consumption and Dynamic Power Management" features seem a good idea, since the card will never be used very intensively.
Or would the much cheaper Zotac Synergy Edition GeForce GT 210 be just as good for my needs. (http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1088&pid=1240&psn=&lid= 1&leg=0)
Or are there other types of cards that would be more appropriate?
And finally, can you connect a single-link DVI device to a dual-link DVI port?  (If so, I would like the DVI port to be dual-link, for future compatibility.  If not, it will need to  be single-link, for my current hardware.)

For the benefit of anyone searching on this topic in the future, a posting of this question on Silent PC Review (http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=65413) yielded some extremely helpful responses.

  • Graphics card for 2 monitors with TV out function

I would like to use my H500s as the centerpiece of a Media Center. To do this it seems that  I need a new graphics card that will support at least 2 TVs/Monitors (3 would be even better). The first one is easy, my newer 50 inch TV hooks right up, but my older 33 inch TV is the problem.
From shopping around it looks like I need a card with either an S-Link along with a VGA or 2 VGAs and an adapter. Either way, the card needs to have a TV out function. It looks like I will also need to upgrade the power supply but that is a minor issue.
If anyone can suggest a card, or somewhere that I might find more information , I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance for any help with this.

The card you have should work if you get one ADC to DVI adapter

If you need more power you may be able to find one of the original upgrades used:
ATI Radeon 9600 XT with 128MB of DDR SDRAM, DVI and ADC ports
ATI Radeon 9800 XT with 256MB of DDR SDRAM, DVI and ADC ports (occupies AGP slot and adjacent PCI slot)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL with 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM, two dual-link DVI ports (occupies AGP slot and adjacent PCI slot)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL with 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM, two dual-link DVI ports (occupies AGP slot and adjacent PCI slot)
New, the best is probably the Radeon® X800 XT Mac Edition

  • Graphics card issue or monitor issue?

    Hello, i have a MacPro 2.66 w/ an ATI x1900 and a MacBookPro with th nVidia 8600
i recently purchased a 28" Hanns-g Display which i upgraded from my 20" apple cinema display, im curious if this could be a graphic issue or a monitor issue:
When i connect the 28" monitor to my ATI card (port 1) and boot into 10.4.10 (macPro) i noticed diagonal lines that seem to "scroll" (like an overscan line or something) on greyish and lighter backgrounds.
tried it with the second port, same thing, it does it on all resolutions
    (it runs @ 1920x1200).
when i boot into XP and try the same sites i did in 10.4.10 it doesnt do it at all, its as it should.
I tried both VGA>DVI and HDMI>DVI to the ATI on OSX but it only does it with the HDMI>DVI connection under OSX, VGA looks fine.
(btw my ati card is clean as a whistle, no dust or anything)
However if i plug it into my MacBookPRo with hdmi>DVI it doesnt do that at all.
so im wondering probably incompatible monitor or what?
im looking to getting a 30" Apple Display but not if its gonna act up like that on my macpro, none of this appeared on my ACD 20".
    any suggestions or tips?
    thanks!

im not experiencing scan line son my 30" ACD display under OSX or XP with my ATI, could be the monitor you are using, but if its not doing it with your MBP than.....idk
sonds strange, try another gfx card or another macpro if possible.

  • Early Intel Mac Pro--what are my graphics card upgrade options?

I bought my Mac Pro in June, 2007 and want to improve my ability to use it for games--right now it's a bit of a dog in that respect. I have a 3 GHz dual Quad-Core processor setup that my hardware overview says is a MacPro2,1 model identifier. My stock graphics card is the GeForce 7300GT using the PCIe bus. Any help would be greatly appreciated--I know there are some expensive cards out there for newer models and that there is some discussion on what is compatible with earlier models like mine, but I would hope that my $5,000 system has no viable upgrade path for this.
    Rocketman

The card is dead silent on idle. I haven't tried it on any games yet, but with 720p HD content like .mkv files playing in VLC, the fan only goes up to 20-25%, and even at that I can't even hear it.
Idle fan speed is about 5%
Idle temps are 63 deg celcius (note that its summer, and my ambient room temps are hot)
Note these temps and fan speeds are under Windows 7 on ATI CCC. I can't get the temps and fan speeds under OSX, but I doubt they are different, the card is very quiet. And yes it does work under bootcamp
Aside from maybe dual flashed PC 1GB 4870s in crossfire, this is most likely the best gpu upgrade you can do presently; it is the best upgrade if you want to stay with apple oem parts.
There is always the dark horse: the GTX 285 from nvidia, however I doubt (wish) that it will be supported for 1st gen MPs. It's possible, though highly unlikely.

  • Are my graphics cards knackered?

My MBP 15" mid 2010 is beginning to develop serious freezing and scrambled images when viewing streaming videos or websites with flash content. When trying to take a screen capture it comes out black so here's a photo of one example:
    http://twitpic.com/43fudt/full
This video shows it affecting the screen another way. When I attempt to scroll, part of the screen is frozen while the other scrolls normally:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI-ggvFpsPc
Here also is a video showing more peculiar behaviour. When the video is played the image is completely scrambled. It stops momentarily while video is paused then starts again when play is pressed:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIq07CNZJec
Does anyone have any answers as to why this is happening? Could it be a hardware issue or Software related? The computer isn't even a year old yet (bought in July '10) so it's unlikely the graphics cards are spent.
    Thanks.

No, with thousands of developers out there, there is no way Apple can have a handle on each one. It gives developers tools on http://developer.apple.com/
If developers choose not to use them, or use them in the wrong way without consulting with Apple first, they have only themselves to blame.
We, including myself, are just end users seeing the result of this. You can't expect Apple to police all of them. Especially when you think that 1000 factorial is a greater number than the number of seconds in the age of the universe, and testing each software in combination with each other software out there would take longer than a second a piece.
Apple can set standards that make failure less likely, but they can't enforce it to the tooth and nail and make sure every one of them works together that makes a mistake in development.

  • HP 2326s New graphics card but blank monitor

Hi, I am trying to get my EVGA Nvidia GT630 2GB DDR3 graphics card to work in my Pavilion p6 2326s desktop pc. I bought a new power supply because my friend told me that the standard 300w wasn't enough to power the card and I also currently have 2 vengence corsair 4GB ram sticks in. My problem is that when I put the GT630 into the pci-e slot and plug the monitor cord into the dvi slot on the card (grant it i shut everything off first and disable the integrated graphics and unplug everything from the back before opening case) i get a blank screen on my monitor when i turn the computer back on. It still does this even with my new power supply corsair 600w 80plus bronze certified. My one friend says that it has something to do with my bios setting to where i have to set the video to peg or something of that nature but this is my second gt630 because the first one I had called and asked help from EVGA technical support and all they could think of after I've done all they asked of me was that the card i had gotten was faulty or the pci-e slot is dead. So i returned the card and now i have the second one currently but does samething it did with the first one.
The steps i did for the EVGA techs were:
    F10 to BIOS
    Computer setup or bios setup
    Advanced mode
    Security
    Secure Boot config
Disable both secure boot and fast boot
Enable Legacy boot support and hit F10 to save and exit
After doing all this it still came up with a blank screen on my monitor but I know my monitor is on because when i turn my computer completely off a blue light flashes on my monitor saying that its still on and thats all i get when i have the computer on with blank screen and blue light flashing. I have a vga to dvi connector on the back of the pc. I thought the gt630 would be great because it doesn't require any power supply cords to go to it or anything it should just be a plug in and work type of thing but I don't know what else would be causing this problem to keep a blank black screen on my monitor when its plugged into the back of the gt630 graphics card

    Hi,
Remove the video card and then try clearing the CMOS.  Be sure to plug into the DVI-I port on the back of your PC.
If you still have issues then check the monitor, cable and adapter on another PC to eliminate those components as being faulty.
If your PC boots up sucessfully then double check the BIOS information again using MSINFO32.  If your PC is only at 8.07 then install this BIOS update. The BIOS update will not get fully installed until you see 100% and then after rebooting the PC the final installation process will commence.  After this proces is complete then try the graphics card.

  • Graphics card is dead! Help with replacement please!

    Hi,
I've just been given a Dual core G5 powermac (2.0ghz) model. It works fine with the exception of the graphics card. Previous owner took it to an apple store for testing and they said he would need a new card.
I've got an apple display with the ADC plug.
Can someone please advise me on a suitable replacement please? I guess my options are a card with an ADC plug or and adaptor and a standard DVI card?
I find it all a bit confusing! Most of my work is music related so I don't need a high end card. I really just want a cheap solution to get this machine back up and running!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Bradley

My graphic card failed and developed strange barcode type lines that flickered intermittently - getting worse the longer the computer was on. The flickering changed when the cable to the graphics card was "jiggled" / moved around. It turned out to be a problem with the ATI Radeon 9800 graphic card that came installed with the G5. There was nothing obviously wrong with the card the fan was fully operational.
This is how I fixed it:
    1. Ran a Apple Hardware Diagnostic check from the Startup disk - hold down the Options key, Select Hardware Diagnostic and then select Extended. This confirmed that it was the Graphics board (Video (RAM)) and not the Logic board (contrary to the view of Apple and TechServe - both of whom wanted me to bring the G5 in for their diagnostic ... $150 +)
    2. Purchased the new board (I got it from B&H Photo):
    http://ati.amd.com/products/Radeon9600/Radeon9600propcmac/index.html
    3. Installed the new board - 5 minutes total: remove one screw - carefully remove cooked 9800 board - install new board - replace screw.
    4. Install new 9600 software (which the manufacturers suggest you do first) - it automatically overwrites the necessary 9800 files.
    5. Purchase and connect the Apple ADC-to-DVI converter - used to connect the new board to my Apple Cinema Display 23".
    6. Reboot
I hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.
    Best
    Dom
