Are my Airport Cards 802.11g or 802.11n?

I have an intel iMac g5 and a Macbook. Both with Airport Extreme cards. I have two Airport Express base stations. Can I use n? Or am I limited to g?

It will depend on the exact model of your MacBook, but if it has a Core 2 Duo Intel chip, then it most likely is "n"-capable. The G5 would definitely not be "n." You can run the 802.11n AirPorts in their default "802.11n (b/g compatible)" radio mode so both "n" and "g" clients can connect. In this mode, with any "b/g" clients connected to the network, "n" clients would only get approx. 70% of the "n" bandwidth, but still higher that either "b" or "g."

Hardmac.com has post a step-by-step guide on how to upgrading a MacBook Core Duo from 802.11g to 802.11n using an 802.11n card from the Mac Pro desktop. The upgrade was also tested and confirmed to work with the AirPort Extreme 802.11n at 802.11n speed.
There is no reason that a similar upgrade shouldn't also work with the MacBook Pro.

    Gino,
Interesting how the Apple 802.11n Enabler installed on the MacBook with no problems using the CD that comes with the AirPort Express.
    I must try that.

  • IOS6 and Appletv 5.1 wifi working as 802.11g instead 802.11n

Both upgrades are making my devices to operate as 802.11g instead 802.11n, at my home wifi connections.
The devices which I haven't updated are still working as 802.11n.
This could be another issue in the new upgrades. I hope that a possible iOS6.0.1 fix that up!
    Thanks everyone

  • Can you disable 802.11g and 802.11a on an Airport Card?

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable 802.11a and 802.11g functionality on a MacBook Airport card? I have a very old 802.11b access point and the airport card seems to be making it fail. I was hoping that by turning off 802.11g or potentially adjusting some other airport parameters I might be able to keep the AP from crashing. I'm hoping to keep the AP I have because it has an integrated print server which has been great. If there is no way to modify the settings on the airport card, I guess I'll need to upgrade my AP.
    Thanks.

Well, I should have used the advice I give to everyone else. Even though my wireless router is very old, there was a firmware upgrade for it. Even though the release notes for the firmware said nothing about it fixing a problem with a MacBook, I upgraded to the latest firmware. After a week or so of testing, it seems to have resolved the problem with the AP going dead when the MacBook was using it.

  • Airport express 802.11g and 802.11n?

Hi whats the difference between these two? can they both work for my itouch and mini mac?

The 802.11n protocol is newer and faster than 802.11g; click here for more information. The iPod touch and Mac mini will be limited to 802.11g.

  • How can I tell if the connection us 802.11g or 802.11n?

    G'day people
I bought a new Time Capsule today and just installed it. Both my iMac and MacBook are backing-up with Time Machine to the Time Capsule; that's great.
I also have an AppleTV and a TiVo set-top-box connected. I want to confirm that the iMac, MacBook and AppleTV are connected to the Time Capsule via 802.11n and the TiVo is connected as 802.11g.
Is there anything I can look up on both computers to confirm 802.11n connection?
    Thanks
    Al

Just got home from Sydney - Love it there, Mate!
Hold "option" and click the airport icon in
the toolbar. If the rate is over 54, it is n. If 54 or less it could be either, so make sure you are closer to the TC when you do it.

  • 802.11g versus 802.11b/g - Which Should I Use?"

Hi, quick question. What is the difference? Which setting should I use for my home network? Does it matter? I am using a Netgear router with 2 Macs and 2 PC's. Thanks
    d

But why is that? It's most annoying. Apple (and others) promote this wild and wonderful 802.11g and how much faster it is...Great! I'll go shell out another x-hundred dollars and upgrade, only to find out that where the old wireless b could get a solid and stable connection to my PB EVERWHERE in my home (and next door at the neighbours place) I can't even get a stable connection in my bedroom not even 20ft. away from the router. I'm thinking I should have stayed with wireless b in the first place. Or am I just way off base and just have a defective wireless g card in my PB?.
Sorry about the rant, but I had to vent.

  • Having both 802.11g and 802.11n devices on a new dual-band AEBS

Although I don't own a dual-band AEBS yet, I'm thinking I might be in the market for one. I just moved into a new apartment complex where the 2.4GHz frequency is saturated with over 30 wireless networks in range of my unit. I'm thinking that the 5GHz frequency would be much less crowded, and am thus considering getting a dual-band AEBS.
I have the following equipment on my home network:
1 Power Mac G5 (uses wired ethernet)
    2 MacBooks (use 802.11n)
    1 iPhone (uses 802.11g)
    1 PlayStation 3 (uses 802.11g)
My question is (and I keep finding conflicting information on this topic) will the iPhone and the PS3 slow down the MacBooks from 802.11n speed to 802.11g speed when they are connected to the dual-band AEBS? If so, can this be avoided by running 2 routers with two separate SSIDs (one in 802.11n only mode, and the other in 802.11g only mode)?
Sorry if this is a repeat question, but the fine print on Apple's product page says that the dual-band AEBS will be slowed down when a 802.11g device joins, but I have heard people say otherwise elsewhere.
    Thanks.

So with the new dual-band AEBS, it is possible to create two different SSIDs (one 5GHz 802.11n and one 2.4GHz 802.11g) and have those two networks seamlessly joined for file/printer sharing as well as both run at their maximum speeds.
To the best of my knowledge, being that I just got one a few days ago and haven't "experimented" fully yet, I believe the answer is yes to all counts. I'm sure if others have had the opportunity to check out all of the features that this new model has to offer, they will certainly chime in.

  • Upgrading From 802.11g To 802.11n.

I have an Intel 24" iMac which I understand is compatible with wi-fi standard 802.11n. I have paid £1.25 and downloaded the 802.11n update from Apple.
However, my router is a Netgear DG834G which, I understand, is only compatible with 802.11g.
Would I notice any benefit if I upgraded my router to a Netgear DG834N or is there a better alternative?

I think (and stand to be corrected) that upgrading your router and Mac to be 802.11n compatible would make very little difference to your experience with the internet or downloading from the web.
Where it would (theoretically) make a difference is if your wireless network between your equipment at home were all 802.11n compatible then transfer speeds between those (again theoretically) would be quicker (for e.g. Mac-to-Mac or, Mac-to-AppleTV over a wireless network)

  • New macbook pros should I get 802.11g or 802.11n

I'm about to get one of the new Macbook Pro's with the Intel Core Duo 2's. I'm getting a new wireless router as well. I was planning on getting the Linksys WRT54GL, which is 802.11.
Would I gain anything by getting an 802.11n router instead? If so, anyone have any recommendations?
macbook pro 2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo

I have the Belkin Pre-N Router and it has been great with my MBP Core Duo. My new Core 2 Duo MBP has a different card and it is working very well also. No one is sure what the nature of the wireless adapter in these new books is, but it appears to be some sort of N-like technology, however, Apple has it behaving as if it is the same as the others. The reason being that there is no established N yet and they are waiting. My guess is that we will receive a firmware update to get them running at N speeds once the specs for N are official. Until then, I would not spend too much money on a Pre-N or Draft N router because it could very well be useless for N speeds when N is released. I got the Belkin for $100 and the speed is very nice and the range is exceptional. Anyhow, that is my two cents...if it's worth that much.

  • Airport Extreme (802.11n) with Airport Express/Extreme (802.11g/b) ?

If the 802.11n airport extreme is the main router, and used in conjunction with older airport extreme/express (single antenna); what will happen?
Will the network drop to the 802.11g speeds?
Will the benefits of MIMO be lost?

According to this Macworld.com article:Once you add 802.11g or 802.11b devices to the network, the performance of the entire network will be affected; it won’t be reduced all the way down to the slower performance of the respective older standards, but performance won’t be as fast as a single-standard network. (And 802.11b devices will affect performance to a greater extent than 802.11g devices will.)

  • Disable 802.11n - Force MacBook to use 802.11g

    Hello Everyone,
I'm searching for a possibilty to disable 802.11n on my MacBook. I want it to use the G standard instead.
We are using a NETGEAR wn802Tv2 Accesspoint in our office. I can connect to the Router, if the Router is in bg-mode. But connection fails when I try to connect, when the router is in ng-mode. Snow Leopard sys the password is wrong. But it is correct.
I'm not allowed to change the Accesspoint permantly to bg-mode. So I need a possibility to force my MacBook to operate in 802.11g mode.
Im using Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on the new Uniboy MacBook.
    Thanks in Advance
    Zoidberg

There is no way I am aware of in Mac OS X to force an 802.11n-capable AirPort card to only use 802.11b/g mode.

    Hello,
I'm looking for a Wlan router and come across this MSI RG300N.
It's the cheapest N router around here in the Netherlands, but i can't find much info about the device.  ???
    what i found:
    supports 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n
    1x RJ-45 (10/100Mbps) WAN poort
    4x RJ-45 (10/100Mbps) LAN poorten
    3x Antenne
    4Mb Flash mem.
    16Mb Dram
    SPI Firewall
    VPN Passthrough
    WEP 128-bit, WPA, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK
Does anybody have some more info or user experience?
for example how much power does it use? (the eminent em4550 for example only use 5 watts)

The specs says the firmware is upgradable, but where can i find new firmware versions ?
(the number of firmware updates says something about the support for the product, more is better  )
    Where is the firmware download?
Has anyone looked at the hardware?  Is this router an Atheros ar9132 with ar9103 radio?  If so, exciting news!  MSI may have produced a high quality version of the Atheros AP81 platform routers.
If this router is ar9132 + ar9103, it is possible to run OpenWRT Linux on this router.  it would be able to use the Linux ath9k open wireless driver and have a bright future.  You can see more information at: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Aforum.openwrt.org+ap81&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

  • Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter Only Connects to 802.11G on WRT310N

I recently purchased the Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter. I plugged it into my Xbox (which is current on updates, including the adapter drivers), and am able to successfully connect to my WRT310Nv1 using the "Mixed" mode, but only at 802.11G, not 802.11N. If I force my router into "Wireless-N Only" mode, the Xbox is able to see the signal, but will not connect. The WRT310Nv1 has the most recent firmware (v1.0.09) installed, and I am using WPA2 Personal, AES encryption.
I've scoured the internet and haven't been able to find a solution yet. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I have an Xbox 360 Slim with the built-in Wireless N and I have the EXACT same problem.  I also tried forcing my router into Wireless-N only mode and the Xbox will not connect.  It will only connect in "mixed" mode but at 802.11G.  This is very frustrating.
If any one can help us out it would be much appreciated!!

  • PCI cards, Airport cards...help me understand what is what and why?

Help me understand this wireless network "card" hardware stuff.
I have a dual 867 MHz G4 that I want to set up for networking with a PC so that both machines can access the internet (via DSL).
As far as I know, my Mac does not have an airport card of any kind. I'm planning to buy a Lynksys WRT 54G2 wireless router. Do I need to also install an airport card, or PCI card in my G4 to make this all happen? And, if so, what is recommended that will work with my G4?
The guys at the Apple store are telling me that all I need is a wireless router, and don't have to install anything extra, but what I'm reading on these various networking threads, is that just the G4 and a wireless router will not do the trick. After reading lots of threads here, it's sounding like I have to jump through hoops to set up a usable, working network. The Apple guy says that this is easy and basic. I'm thinking that THEY are thinking in terms of a newer machine, maybe? They're all young guys who probably think that nothing goes back farther than the iMac.
One thing the Apple guys were pushing is Airport Extreme, but at $180, I somehow thing I can get there for much less than that.
To make a long story short (hah...too late for that), what exactly do I need as far as a card, router, etc., and where do I get the right stuff (links would be helpful) to set up a Mac/PC network using my old decrepit G4?

    Hi-
    Networking Macs and PCs
    Setup a Home Network
    Create a small Ethernet network
    MacWireless
Check the above links, and you will be better educated in the basics and requirements of various networks.
The easiest, and least hardware intensive is the Ethernet network. Also, Ethernet is fast.
A note about Airport; you machine only accepts standard 802.11b Airport cards. In a word, very slow.
Airport Extreme, or 802.11g, is much faster, and 802.11n is the fastest available. To get 802.11g or 802.11n in your machine will require a PCI adapter.
