Are my graphics cards breaking?

My MacBook Pro occasionally ends up with multicoloured lines across the screen. Is this a sign that my graphics cards are breaking?

Good indication. I would take it in for diagnosis.

  • Early Intel Mac Pro--what are my graphics card upgrade options?

I bought my Mac Pro in June, 2007 and want to improve my ability to use it for games--right now it's a bit of a dog in that respect. I have a 3 GHz dual Quad-Core processor setup that my hardware overview says is a MacPro2,1 model identifier. My stock graphics card is the GeForce 7300GT using the PCIe bus. Any help would be greatly appreciated--I know there are some expensive cards out there for newer models and that there is some discussion on what is compatible with earlier models like mine, but I would hope that my $5,000 system has no viable upgrade path for this.
    Rocketman

The card is dead silent on idle. I haven't tried it on any games yet, but with 720p HD content like .mkv files playing in VLC, the fan only goes up to 20-25%, and even at that I can't even hear it.
Idle fan speed is about 5%
Idle temps are 63 deg celcius (note that its summer, and my ambient room temps are hot)
Note these temps and fan speeds are under Windows 7 on ATI CCC. I can't get the temps and fan speeds under OSX, but I doubt they are different, the card is very quiet. And yes it does work under bootcamp
Aside from maybe dual flashed PC 1GB 4870s in crossfire, this is most likely the best gpu upgrade you can do presently; it is the best upgrade if you want to stay with apple oem parts.
There is always the dark horse: the GTX 285 from nvidia, however I doubt (wish) that it will be supported for 1st gen MPs. It's possible, though highly unlikely.

  • Are my graphics cards knackered?

My MBP 15" mid 2010 is beginning to develop serious freezing and scrambled images when viewing streaming videos or websites with flash content. When trying to take a screen capture it comes out black so here's a photo of one example:
    http://twitpic.com/43fudt/full
This video shows it affecting the screen another way. When I attempt to scroll, part of the screen is frozen while the other scrolls normally:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI-ggvFpsPc
Here also is a video showing more peculiar behaviour. When the video is played the image is completely scrambled. It stops momentarily while video is paused then starts again when play is pressed:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIq07CNZJec
Does anyone have any answers as to why this is happening? Could it be a hardware issue or Software related? The computer isn't even a year old yet (bought in July '10) so it's unlikely the graphics cards are spent.
    Thanks.

No, with thousands of developers out there, there is no way Apple can have a handle on each one. It gives developers tools on http://developer.apple.com/
If developers choose not to use them, or use them in the wrong way without consulting with Apple first, they have only themselves to blame.
We, including myself, are just end users seeing the result of this. You can't expect Apple to police all of them. Especially when you think that 1000 factorial is a greater number than the number of seconds in the age of the universe, and testing each software in combination with each other software out there would take longer than a second a piece.
Apple can set standards that make failure less likely, but they can't enforce it to the tooth and nail and make sure every one of them works together that makes a mistake in development.

  • Are multiple graphics cards without multiple monitors helpful?

I have a Mac Pro with two graphics cards in it, but only one monitor. (I was/am considering getting some more monitors but haven't done so yet. The monitor is hooked up to the more powerful graphics card.) I was just wondering if, in theory or practice, there's any benefit to having a graphics card in the Mac without a monitor hooked up to it? OpenCL should mean that the Mac is able to take advantage of the processing and VRAM capacity of the card even if it's not generating pixels to be output, right? Maybe I just answered my own question.

There can be if you have a GTX 680 for CUDA and use an AMD card for monitors IF the program or plugins are written to do so. normally, no.

  • Why are the graphics cards in macbook pro's so weak?

Considering the price of a macbook pro, why is it they don't offer anything more than intel iris graphics or a 750m? That's the only thing holding me back from getting a macbook pro. I like to game, and those 2 just aren't enough for the kind of gaming I do.

  • Can I upgrade my (Graphics Card) on my laptop?

Hello can my (Graphics Card) on my laptop be upgraded
    this is mine  http://gyazo.com/e10f4147557ec792856f20c0e215e553

    Hi:
There are no graphics 'cards' in your notebook.  The graphics is part of the motherboard and cannot be upgraded or replaced without replacing the entire motherboard with a supported one listed in the service manual for your model--assuming one has better graphics.
Replacing the motherboard would cost you about as much as buying a new notebook with better graphics.

  • Which Graphics Card do I need for H520S

I have a few questions for you lovely people out there and hope you can help.
My son has asked me for a new Graphics card for his PC.(Not a xmas present)
On an old post it was suggested that an Nvidia Geforce GT620 1Gb or an AMD Radeon HD7570 2Gb were the ones to go for. Is this still the case or are there newer/ better cards available.
    I have a reasonable budget of £100 ($160)
If these are the cards to upgrade his PC with, will I need to upgrade the PSU? If so what unit do you suggest.
I would need the graphics card and PSU combined to be near my budget.
Lastly, Is it easy to install the graphics card and PSU (If needed) myself or would I need specialist help.
    Hoping you can help
    Happy Christmas
    Mark

so i now need a new graphics card so i only have to use the new Mac mini port connecting cable, but which card to buy and should i remove the older card.
Replacing the graphics card will do nothing to help you unless your current card doesn't have a dual link DVI port (most all 2 DVI port G5 cards do have at least one dual link DVI port).
There are NO graphics cards that will work in the G5 that have mini display port.
I don't want to use multi cable connections
Using a dual link DVI port from a G5 graphics card, connection to the iMac via the Atlona adapter is the only way to achieve use of the iMac as a monitor with a G5.

  • Option to install a graphics card in future

    Hi,
I am planning on buying the new HP Pavilion 15-n265sa Laptop and hust wanted to know if there is a an option available to upgrade my internal graphics intel hd graphics 4400 to any other nVidia graphics card???
I saw the service manual of the laptop and could not make out, if its possible.  There is a section as below
    Switchable discrete graphics:

NVIDIA N14P-GV2 GeForce GT R 740M with 2 GB of dedicated video
    memory (258 MB×16 DDR3 900-MHz×4 PCs)
Could anyone let me know what this means

    Hi:
No, it is not possible to upgrade the graphics without replacing the entire motherboard.
There are no graphics "cards" in your notebook like there are in a desktop PC.
The graphics (Intel and nVidia) are chips soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded or replaced.

  • PCIe Graphics Card with Magma T/Bolt Expansion box

Does anyone here have a good or bad experience with the Radeon 5770 or 5870 cards used in a Magma Thunderbolt expansion box in conunction with a MacMini?
I'm looking to purchase a graphics card to go into my Magma box, but not sure which card will be supported in this configuration.
    Thanks,

I have seen a couple people were unable to boot OS X if they had an Nvidia 8800 installed. You'll need something that OS X can see IF you want to see early bootup messages (such as Vista startup options).
Can't say I've seen a message with "Marox" mentioned. So only way to know for certain is old trial and error.
There are newer graphics cards coming out. There is the Radeon X1900 (which is over-due for an update), and the Nvidia 8600 GTS series works in Vista and at least doesn't block OS X from working, but is only a step above X1900.
Apple sells a $1600 Nvidia for 3D. And as you can see, graphics options is a "weak spot."

  • Graphics card (PLEASE REPLY QUICKLY)

    I have a hp pavilion dv6680et. specs:
    core 2 duo t7700
    2 gb ram
    geforce 8400m gs
    250 gb hard drive
so my problem is with my graphics card is really bad and i want to change it i can buy all type of cards. Can i change and if i can change how can i?????

    Hi:
There are no graphics "cards" in your notebook.
The GPU is soldered to the motherboard.
You have the best graphics HP installed in that model series, so there aren't even any motherboards with better graphics you can switch to.

  • AGP graphics card + final cut pro HD 4.5

i have final cut pro hd 4.5 and just got a mac book pro. and when installing everything work but when i went to open FCP an error message came up saying AGP graphics card missing?
does anybody know what that means? or why that message comes up? is there anything i can do to fix it?
thank you for any of your help!

Maxplanar and David already told you what you need to do to rectify the situation.
That said, I'll answer some of your questions if you're still curious...
does anybody know what that means? or why that message comes up? is there anything i can do to fix it?
Yes, it means your computer doesn't have an AGP graphics card. The Macbook Pro has a PCI Express graphics card. There are PCI graphics cards, AGP graphics cards, and PCI Express graphics cards. The power and speed of the cards has progressed with the connection method (which is the distinction between the 3 I listed).
PCI cards plug into PCI slots. AGP cards plug into AGP slots. PCI Express cards plug into PCI Express slots.
When FCPHD 4.5 came out, PCI Express didn't exist. Therefore, it's looking at the graphics card universe as: is this a PCI card? or an AGP card? It needed an AGP card to run, so that test fails and FCP says "You need an AGP card to run me".

  • Qosmio F10-100 - dead graphic card

I bought laptop Toshiba Qosmin F10. It has a dead graphics card. Are the graphics cards in these laptops built onto the motherboard or are they seperate.
    Where can i get one?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, the graphic card replacement is not easy or not possible.
In my knowledge mostly the whole motherboard must be replaced.
However, you should definitely contact the authorized service provider in your country for more details and for the fixing
    So good luck

  • Creative Cloud background service constantly uses high-performance graphics card on MacBook Pro

On my MacBook Pro mid-2010, I recently noticed that the high-performance graphics card for some reason was constantly on. In MacBooks as of 2009, there are two graphics cards that can be used, one integrated, one PCIe. The integrated one is less powerful, but is used to preserve battery. The other one is enabled when there is a high demand for graphics power.
I saw that when the Creative Cloud service (with this I mean the general software package that tracks for updates and syncs fonts and files) was loaded into the system, the MacBook automatically starts using this high-performance graphics card, even without any other software running, just freshly from boot. This, of course, drains battery and I don't think that much power is needed to run a background service. The only way to stop the high-performance graphics card from kicking in, is by terminating the complete Creative Cloud service, which is of course not very useful when you use the sync feature a lot.
Is there a solution for this problem, or can you release an update of the software that addressess this issue?
If I need to provide you with logs or other relevant information, please let me know.
Thanks in advance, it's kind of annoying as it is now.

Same here. Macbook Retina 15", purchased earlier this year.
Nice (and free) utility to monitor GPU-usage is:
    gfxCardStatus from http://gfx.io/
Helped me to notice that it's better to quit Photoshop if not using it because it still uses the nVidia GPU if Photoshop is not even the active application (eg. running in the background).
But still, sometimes after closing Photoshop, gfxCardStatus says that nVidia GPU is in use for process 'Creative Cloud'.
I'm mostly running on battery and nVidia GPU consumes much, much more battery than the integrated, Intel HD Graphics 4000 so this is a big issue for me.
