Are my iPhone pictures on my Mac now?

When I open iPhoto I look the top left and I see gray bar with headings Library, Recent, Shared, and Albums going down the left hand side and sub headings like Events, Photos, Faces, Places, etc.
I do not see recent pictures in the Library > Photos area.
Under the heading Shared I see iCloud, Flickr, and Facebook.
1) In the Shared > iCloud area I see "My Photo Stream" with all my most recent pictures, but are they permanently on my Mac?
2) How come these photos don't go to the Library > Photos area like the others?
3) Are these really in a stream? Will they be replaced and lost forever as I go over the 1,000 mark?
4) Do I need to copy these,or highlight them and drag them to Photos area?
5) Months ago I used to see a sync symbol spinning away when my iPhone was in WiFi range and iPhoto open, but since Mavericks I don't see that why not?
6) Should I go back to plugging the iPhone into Mac since this Photostream stuff seems like hocus pocus.

2 - if you want the permanently in the iPHoto library then in the iPhoto preferenced click the box to automatically import new photos form PhotoStream - this will create a monthly event for th eSP photos from that month
3 - PS photos are available until they pass 30 days or 1000 photos - which ever comes first
4 - either that are use the auto import referenced above
6 - totally your choice - that is one choice - PS is another - use one or the other - if you use both you will gert duplicates
7 - entries under library are viewing your library of photos in one way - events - photos - faces - places
entries under recent are viewing in a different way - lists of photos like the list of the photos in the last inport - the list of photos from the last "n" (you can change this in the iPhoto preferences) months - Last import does not include PS photos - it does include photos imported form cameras and other wired imports
8 - last imports is a list of ThePhotos in the last import - it is not from any time - it is exactly as described - the photos in the last import
9 - not at all - in fact I find iPhoto very intutative and extremely easy - if you do not then maybe it is the correct photo anager for you - use a different one

The iTunes app only transfers photos to your iPhone, it does not import photos that you have taken with the iPhone camera. There are two Apple apps that are best to use to transfer the photos from the iPhone to the Mac. One is free and already on your Mac, Image Capture. The other is a paid app in the Mac App Store, but has been coming free on new Macs for many years, iPhoto. You can configure your Mac to auto open either iPhoto or Image Capture when the iPhone is connected to your Mac in the Preferences of iPhoto. Or you can configure which app to open in the bottom, left corner of the Image Capture app.

Hi,
Photos synced from your computer can't be deleted directly on your iPhone. You'll need to connect your device to iTunes and remove the pictures by going in the Photos tab on your device's settings.

You can get your information back if you have previously done a backup in iTunes or iCloud.

Hi, I made a backup of the iPhone 3G for a friend who wants to go back to a Qtec machine... I could save and restore his pictures and contacts. Now, what about the SMS, do you know where they are stored on my Mac, so that I can restore his messages (the formating might be another problem on a PC or PC-like Handheld). Thanks to all for your contribution (I guess it must be in the Users/Library folder, but where?). Patrick

On a mac it should be in:
~/Users/home folder/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
Windows:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

My iphone 4G has 1165 photos and NONE of them can be seen in the DCIM. None of my videos either. The folder is empty. Where the heck are all my pictures?

With my old 3GS I could connect the phone and navigate to a folder that contained all my pictures and copy them off or view them. Now with my iphone 4G, I connect the phone, navigate to the DCIM folder and it's empty! WTH? Where are all my pictures? I hate having to use itunes because it's performamce is beyond terrible. The DCIM folder is for your Camera Roll. The pics synced from iTunes will not show up there, only pics taken with the iPhone.

If you bought them on your iPad then you will need to connect your iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over to the Tones part of your computer's iTunes library and you can then sync them to your iPhone - ringtones are a one-time only download, so you won't be able to redownload them directly on your phone.

We are suffering very similar issues when communicating from my iphone to a friend who has both iphone and iPad enabled.
As long as I reply to an existing text chain, then it is visible on the target iphone. If I SMS the phone number, it gets routed to the IPAD!! And NO, I should not have to disable imessage when I want to send an SMS!!

It's true that it will erase your iPhone music if you sync them with Mac. You can use third party software to transfer music from iPhone to Mac, there are many programs you can choose. In this way, you can selectively move music.

From what you describe it sounds like the phone is in recovery mode. Try connecting the phone to the wall charger that it came with, and perform a reset then connect it to iTunes again and try:
Reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Be careful, when you connect the iPhone to your mac, unless you have saved the photos. Synced photos may easily be accidentally deleted by syncing again. And do not enable iCloud Photo Library (Beta), that will erase synced photos as well. Synced Photos are not included in the device backups.
Set your iTunes Preferences to "Devices > Prevent iPos, iPhones, iPads from syncing automatically". Otherwise iTunes may launch and sync your iPhone with an empty iPhoto library the moment you connect it.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to sync the synced photos back. Apple recommends to mail them back, but that would be a lot of clicking (iTunes: Syncing photos - Apple Support). You could also share them to a Shared Album, but a third party app like TD recommended, will be better.

If the images are in the location you want them be sure to select "Add" at the top of the import dialog box.

Easy way to throw iPhone pictures onto Mac

I think it'd be great if I could just throw pictures onto my mac instead of having to email them to myself. How can I do this? I see this iCloud share but..when I shared it with myself I don't see anything on icloud.com or my email or anywhere.

You have to connect and select iPhone in iTunes sidebar to see the Photos tab.
Photos are saved in Mac's iPhoto.
