Are my keys wearing out?

I've noticed, that on some of my unibody's macbook pro keys are feeling as if they are wearing out. For example, if i press on the "S" key for a long time, push it up and back, I can feel it squeeck or scratch. The keys do work, but this just gets me concerned if it is beginning to get damaged. Is this normal?
Also, can the keyboard get damaged if someone pushes a key too hard?

Keyboards, like anything else, can wear out or possibly be defective from the factory. If you are under warranty, by all means report this to Apple or take it by an Apple Store for evaluation.
My ibookG4 was one of those where the letters prematurely wore off of the keyboard. Apple cheerfully replaced the keyboard under warranty.
Good luck!

  • My wireless keyboard feels like it is wearing out already

In the last couple of weeks my wireless keyboard has started to feel like it is wearing out, by which I mean that none of the keys travel smoothly anymore and feel stiff to type on. While they are not actually sticking the whole typing experience now feels horid.
The keyboard is about two years old, and as far as I know nothing has got spilt on it during its lifetime.
I've tried blasting the keyboard with compressed air in case the problem is caused by accumulated dust but that does not seem to have made any difference. Having searhed for similar problems I can see that people have done drastic things like pour alochol into their keyboards to clean them, or even put them in the dishwasher, but I am a little reluctant to take such drastic action unless there is no other alternative.
Can anyone suggest how I restore my keyboard to its original smoothly functioning state, or can I just not expect the thing to last for more than two years?

Can't help with that since I disdain wireless stuff. Pollutes the atmosphere with EMR/EMI.
… it would be good if Apple offered you the option of having a wired keyboard instead of their wireless one when you buy a new iMac.
    That's still an option.

Select module like MM, PP, SD, and QM.....
    Click on Search
then it displays the Release Version and the Delta Functionality. Which can be downloaded to a word document if required.
And also check the release notes of ECC 6.0 in service.sap.com.
When you are upgrading from 4.6C to ECC6
Nothing major, follow the same process you'd follow if you were updating PI service packs in R/3 or enhancing data sources. Empty queues in RSA7 and lbwq. Also empty setup tables through lbwg as the upgrade doesn't like it if these tables contain data. This is all on the R/3 side (although you empty RSA7 by running each delta TWICE in BW).
To transfer queues from lbwq to rsa7, execute jobs through LO cockpit (lbwe).
Some of your data sources could also be using sm13 instead of lbwq, so do check it out as well.
For installing ECC 6.0 you required a solution manager key. With out solution manager key you cannot install ECC6.0.
For ECC 6.0 is called net weaver component here you have ABAP+JAVA stack.
    ECC6.0 supports UNCODE.
For installing 4.6 you don't require solution manager key. It only having ABAP stack.
    4.6C supports NONUNICODE.
Major difference is ECC6 is netwear product having WASJAVA+ABAP
secondly support unicode apart from this we have other diff. you can get form master guide from service.sap.com/instguides.

  • Does time machine wear out drives?

granted that all mechanical devices wear out, but does use of Time Machine with its hourly/daily/weekly backups cause more wear on a drive?
the hourly backups will move more data depending on the work one is doing. The constant backing up is great for data security, how much increased wear does it cause on the drives involved?
    thank you!
    ray

I have a Mac Pro that I bought in April 2007. I've used the same system drive since I got the machine. Furthermore, I added a second drive to store my music on at the same time. I started using Time Machine in November of 2007 shortly after it came out backing up both drives. Both drives are still chugging along just fine after 5 years. Naturally anything that causes increased reading and/or writing to a hard drive will increase wear and tear. Most modern drives have something like >200,000 hours MTBF (mean time before failure) which is over 20 years of continuous use. That doesn't mean a drive can't fail sooner (I've had drives fail in < 1 year) but as long as you're buying name brand drives and back-up, your data should be well protected.

  • Option key is out of order when I want to select a boot disk

    I've upgraded the OsX10.6.8.
after then, I can't boot by Bootcamp any more, because the Option key is out of order. I've tried it over 10 times. What's wrong?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Taking Out The SIM Card Wears Out The SIM Tray

I wanted to take the SIM tray out of my (black) iPhone 3G just to check the SIM card out. It slightly wears out the area around the hole on the SIM tray to do that, it looks exactly what would happen to cheap plastic. Did anyone else remove the SIM card from their iPhone 3G? Which color is it? Does it look a little weared out after doing that? I'm a little *****d off, I just got my iPhone 3G and if I want to take out the SIM tray, I have to wear it out a little? Is the plastic really that cheap...?
Do you guys think that there's any way that Apple will let me swap out just the SIM tray for a new tray? Everything else about my iPhone 3G is almost flawless, and I wouldn't want to swap out the whole phone for this. I think that the SIM tray is made out of cheaper plastic than the rest of the phone, which is noticable when you take the tray out. Here's my advice: DON'T TAKE THE SIM TRAY OUT! You'll probably regret it afterwards.

My new iPhone, I could not even find where the sim holder was. I had to search the manual for info and I did not know about the sim extraction tool in the box.
When I knew where the cover was I had to use strong light and my strong reading glasses to see it, it was really that flush.
There was no hole for the sim tool or paper clip that I used, not realising that a sim tool was on the box cover. I had to punch through to reveal the hole and actually break out the sim holder.
Not for the faint hearted with a brand new precious object in hand, but it had to be done and now the hole is very obvious and the aperture is very clear, even with my normal glasses.

  • Will syncing my iphone 3GS more than one time daily wear out the battery?

Will syncing my iPhone 3GS more than one time daily with Outlook 2007 wear out the battery? An Apple Care advisor said I should only sync it one time per week, but I need to do it daily as I use the calendars and notes for work.

    No.

Whoever you talked to has no idea what they are talking about. Ignore their advise.

  • Does anyone else have an issue with lightning bolt cables prematurely wearing out?

Between me, my wife and my sister in law I have bought 3 iPhone 5's and two of the cables is starting to wear out and the third one is worn out already. Is there a known issue with these cables that causes them to wear out prematurely? We bought two of the phones at launch and one in January. The one we bought in January is the one that wore out first and the launch ones are starting to go bad. We don't use the cables in a way that would cause them to wear faster than usual, for the most part the chargers sit by our night stand waiting to be used at night. My cable is the one that travels the most and is probably in the best condition. Is anyone else having this issue. Is this covered by the warranty?

The cables have either the host iPhone warranty or if purchased separately have a similar 12 months warranty
Take any faulty ones to Apple as long as damage is not user inflicted

  • Will 16GB RAM wear out the SSD? rMBP

Will 16GB RAM in my 2014 Retina Macbook Pro wear out the SSD? I plan on keeping it for 4 years.
Can the SSD, seeing how as the new Macbooks have everything soldered I think, be replaced at all if it runs out of write cycles?

The SSDs of today have a Mean Time Between Failure rate equal to that of the hard drives.  That means you can use the modern SSD as much as you like as those failure rates are in many, many years.  The first and second generation SSDs had vey short lifetimes.  All of that has changed and you can feel free to use it as much as you like.
Your other comment, the current generation of Mac OS X's, Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks, do grab a great deal of the available installed memory.  So it looks as though all of the memory is in use.  Actually it is not but is simply grabbed by the OS X so it can quickly allocate memory as needed.  More important to look at than the available memory is the Memory Pressure.  Go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and click on Memory top center of the window.  Then look at the Memory Pressure bottom center.  As long as that is displayed as green you are great.  Yellow and you are loading up the memory.  Red and you are using virtual memory, the SSD, for swap space.  With 16 GB ram it is not likely you will ever see that go yellow.

  • Do Airport Express modems wear out over time

I periodically ( a few times a week) lose my connection with the Internet through Comcast.  I have two Airport Express units n our home that is our wireless network.  They are synced together.  I will lose connectivity with one or both and have to disconnect from power for about a minute and then plug back in, then all is well until the next failure.  Do these units wear out over time?  Is there a better Apple product to use in this situation?  I am using a Motorola modem in this process.
    Thanks,
    Mike

The physical law of entropy is stronger than God. Therefor, anything and everythign will break down given a long enough time. However, I think you may be worrying a bit too much here. Your express should generally last long enough.. until you plan to change 802.11n to another better format.
Yes, some go bad time to time, hence why limited warranty is only a year from DoP.
I suspect your issue may be due to interference. I'm curious what band are you using on those expresses.

  • Is it poss for a hard drive to wear out?

    Just wondering...
I've jumped from distro to distro many times & compiled quite a few programs/kernels. Of course, if mine did wear out, I could get a new one with a 8 mb cache... ^__^

Can the disk become demagnetized (through over use)? Or will the head motor wear out?
Dusty: I didn't know that happened! I thought that a violent impact caused that.
    Paul ^__^
Violent impact can cause the arm to loosen up by that few micrometers... but so can repeated movement.  Friction wears stuff out. :-D
I've never heard of a disk becoming demagnetized from use, but I've never heard that it can't happen either... electric motors wear out eventually too, I suppose, but I suspect that in both cases this would only happen after a long time.
I'd use a 3.5 GB hard drive if I had room for one in my case. I gave a 4GB away a month ago...
Its not the capacity so much though; a 6 year old 3.5 GB drive is going to have a lot longer seek time and latency. Good enough for backups, maybe, but now things are coming full circle... I wouldn't use the drive for backups because there is the chance of the drive wearing out.

  • IBook G4 keys wearing off

I had a iBook G3 previously and never had any keys wearing off. When I purchased my iBook G4, within a few weeks I purchased an iSkin for the keyboard. Even with using an iSkin, my keys are still wearing off. A - E - N are half gone. Took about 9 mos for them to wear away. I purchased my G4 iBook in 2005 and it is no longer under warranty.
Is there anyplace that you can go to just purchase individual keys, instead of replacing the entire keyboard? Can you purchase the lettering decals anywhere to replace whenever they wear off?
I am disappointed in Apple for not fixing the manufacturing problems with these keyboards-just sending replacement keyboards if people complain enough while under warranty.
Thanks so much for your help.
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   AirPort Extreme

    Hi roswell,
As you are probably aware this is a fairly well documented problem…
As I have AppleCare I had no problem in getting my keyboard replaced, in fact before the first year's warrantee had expired. My replacement doesn't, yet, exhibit the same problem. If you can be bothered to read the whole thread through ('tis a l _ o _ n _ g thread…) you will see that some people have had success in getting their keyboards replaced irrespective of warrantee. All I can say is to contact Customer Services. You're in the lap of the gods
The alternative is to buy a replacement keyboard - they are very easy to fit - from Apple or eBay or www.welovemacs.com who also sell (expensive) replacement key-caps.
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • What to do when the ssd "wears out"?

I recently bought a Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 256gb ssd, 8gb memory. However, after reading into the difference between hdd and ssd, I noticed that ssd's have a shorter lifespan because of each cell having a read/write limit. my question is what to do when the ssd "wears out" or dies? Is it impossible to fix or can I just buy another ssd? Thanks in advance.

Depending on the brand and technologies used by the maker, you can get a fair build
and a better guaranty or warranty with a product such as OWC offers. However one
has to always maintain suitable backups and duplicates, not just timemachine effects
but also complete bootable full system clones in external drives that don't use the
computer's port power to sustain or run them.
And also backup power supplies that filter grid power to limit damages from high and
low voltage, along with other effects of nature and man that can destroy electronics.
The backup scheme of over-redundancy is the answer to the problem of when product
failure can cost you not only a livelihood, but perhaps a few years of your life, too. And
not everyone can use the Cloud backup, some ISPs are incapable of troublefree file
handling and a local backup is a better use of your time if something happens.
SSDs wear out. Expect them to and be ready for that to happen. Mark your calendars!

  • How fast do your rechargeable batteries wear out?

i have a realtively new imac and i have an apple battery charger to recharge the batteries. i find when i change the batterries in the mouse they only last for about a week when the battery level gets down into the 20s % and i have to change the batteries. i use the computer 8 hours a day at least. is this normal for the batteries to wear out so fast? are they defective? i did an experiment and used regualr batteries and they lasted longer.

That could be about right. I don't use my iMac nearly that much, and when I do it is mostly the mouse. I have to change the mouse batteries 3-4 times as often. Maybe once a month using it a few hours at a time, with some days not at all (have a MBP too). As to the difference between regular alkalines (which came with the KB and mouse) and the Apple recharge ones I bought later, I agree the Apple ones go faster.
